Directed Joe Johnston, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids is the science fiction comedy film starring Rick Moranis and the first installment of the Shrunk film franchise. Rob and Jason shrink themselves as a means to rewind to 1989 to review this Disney family classic. When kids sneak into inventor Wayne Szalinski's (Rick Moranis) upstairs lab to retrieve an errant baseball, his experimental shrink ray miniaturizes them. When Szalinski returns home, he destroys the device - and dumps it in the trash, throwing out the kids along with it. The four children, now 1/4-inch tall, must survive the journey back to the house through a yard where sprinklers bring treacherous storms and garden-variety ants stampede like elephants.

It's almost Father's Day! The TechnoRetro Dads look at some of the (scientifically minded) father figures that influenced them in movies and TV. Dr. Frankenstein may not have been a good father figure, but there were plenty of good influences in movies and TV. This week we remember some of the father figures we Enjoy classic movie dads.    News Big Hero 6 will soon come to Disney+ The prankster kid from Jaws is now a police chief on the island where the movie was filmed Did you get the limited edition mashup of Peanut Butter Ritz and Oreos?  Season 2 of the Godzilla animated series is being released for the first time since it was on TV Check out this sweet ET Atari T-shirt given to the crew that excavated the Alamogordo landfill What we're Enjoying So much great stuff to enjoy this week! Shua can't say enough great stuff about the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi. Such a phenomenal story. Jay likes that too, and is also watching Stranger Things and Love, Death, and Robots. So much great stuff to catch up on and Enjoy!   Sci-Fi Saturdays/MCU Location Scout Be sure to check out Jay's articles on Retrozap.com. In the last few weeks he has covered the Kurt Russell film that started a TV franchise, Stargate; the first Trek movie with Picard as the captain, Star Trek Generations; and Godzilla vs Space Godzilla. And make sure to check out MCULocationScout.com for some Ms Marvel locations.    Enjoy Fathers! Did you have a positive father figure in your life? We hope so. Even though both Jay and Shua had supportive and teacherly dads, they still were influenced by other dads in movies and TV. Back in the 60s, Fred MacMurray brought his Absent Minded Professor to life when he helped the students at Medfield College achieve greatness through flubber.   For the next generation, Robin Williams did the same thing in the remake, Flubber. While neither of these scientists had children, they were good role models to young people and made sure the bad guy got what was coming to him too.   Rick Moranis played a father named Wayne Szalinski, who accidentally shrunk his kids in Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. He may not be responsible when it comes to safely securing his equipment, he would do anything to protect his kids.    Another Disney Dad that taught valuable lessons was Cornelius Robinson in Meet the Robinsons. Though there was a complex path for Lewis to get Cornelius's advice, it was still a great message.   Doc Brown didn't have kids of his own, but I bet he felt like he was raising young Marty McFly through all of their time traveling adventures.  In the end he had a great message that Marty could pass down to all his children that Doc probably visited too.    And we have some honorable mention ‘dads' too. These TV scientist help us learn the value of lighting things on fire in our kitchen along with many other lessons.   Who can you honor this week during Father's Day? What valuable lesson, science or otherwise, did that person teach you? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Science rules!” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. In the woods across from the old campgrounds where Gunnar Hansen battled giant mosquitoes, Clint Howard is using some of Farmer Spivey's secret ingredient to help his latest batch of super weed grow faster. A barrel of toxic waste spills carelessly through the floor onto some arachnid eggs, causing them to multiply in size and hatch into giant, blood-sucking parasites. But don't panic—we've got Alfonso Ribeiro and Seth Green here to squash them! With an angry reincarnated Hesse from Demonic Toys out for revenge against Charnetski the Brown, some mutated eight-legged freaks seem like the least of their problems! Then there's those strange science experiments Wayne Szalinski was talking into a tape recorder about—something about a Necronomicon he found in the basement of the cabin or whatever? Uwe Boll also makes his sad return to the show as we take some listener questions. Disney’s Honey, I Shrunk the Kids starred a nice, wide variety of popular actors from the time, including Ghostbuster’s Rick Moranis and Max Headroom himself, Matt Frewer. It tells the story of four kids that get miniaturized by their quirky, scientist dad Wayne Szalinski. They have to cut their way through the backyard to find a way to get big again. This is Deep in the Plus. Here’s where we go into the Disney+ catalog and pull out some of the movies and TV shows that you haven’t gotten around to yet, and we break them down to see if they’re worth your time. This week, we’re traveling back to 1989 and the Disney classic – Honey, I Shrunk The Kids! This is the story of inventor Wayne Szalinski, played by Canadian heartthrob Rick Moranis. Wayne is a brilliant, yet absent-minded scientist, building a shrink ray that will change the world. Only, it doesn’t work... it just blows stuff up. When the kid next door hits a baseball through the window and it lands in the path of the machine's laser, it begins working. Wayne's two kids, plus the ones next door end up getting shrunk. Now the four children have been taken out with the trash and have to find their way back across the world's most dangerous backyard, so Wayne can make them big again. A tale as old as time. Honey I Shrunk the Kids Movie Review Honey I Shrunk the Kids is definitely an icon property for the Walt Disney Company. With a trilogy of movies, a short-lived TV series, and lost park attractions such as "Honey, I Shrunk the Audience!" and the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids: Movie Set Adventure, Disney has a lot invested in the series. And don't forget, a new movie has been announced with Josh Gad joining the Szalinski family. (Can we bring back the playground?) But with all that, does this movie stand up for a 2020 audience? Watch this episode and decide for yourself. Is this movie for you? Do you agree with our thoughts? And don't forget, in every episode of Deep in the Plus, you'll get bonus recommendations as we present our "Pick of the Week." This is where we offer suggestions on even more gems from the Disney+ vault. Don't miss it! Our review of Honey I Shrunk The Kids is the 12th episode of Deep in the Plus! The story of how Wayne Szalinski took over Epcot, and subsequently two other continents, HAS to begin with the story of how Rick Moranis first took over the silver screen...which by most accounts was sort of an accident. Rick Moranis stars as lovable dad and ambitious college professor Wayne Szalinski, who has recently become something of a laughing stock to his peers when he dares to introduce a potential way to drastically reduce the size of everyday objects.  His own experiments have proved futile, but a fluke accident causes the reduction machine to finally work -- too bad the Szalinski children are the ones in the ray's path, along with the rambunctious neighbor kids, the Thompsons.  Wayne accidentally tosses the kids out with the trash, causing the miniscule kids to have to venture through the entire yard and hope they can grab the attention of their parents, and, hopefully, the professor can figure out a way to grow them back to normal size again.  Making it there proves more difficult than it would seem, with treacherous bugs and other pollutants blocking the way at nearly every turn.

Vicky, Nolan and Jill have made their annual pilgrimage to Bob's Lake, which means its time to check in on the Szalinksi family one last time in We Want The D's first foray into direct-to-video Disney. HONEY, WE SHRUNK OURSELVES lacks the budget and much of the cast of the first two films; but what it lacks in those areas is more than makes up for in product placement and some unfortunate implications as to what happened to the older Szalinksi children and the original Diane. We're just saying, its weird that Adam's older siblings are barely mentioned. And who is this "Gordon Szalinki" who seems to have appeared out of nowhere? If we didn't know any better, we'd say that maybe Wayne Szalinski cracked a bit in the intervening eight years between films, but that can't be true...can it?

The 1989 megahit Disney flick, "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" is allegedly a fun comedic science fiction movie for children. In fact, it's actually a disturbing horror film. During their harrowing journey, the shrunken kids narrowly escape getting crushed to death by falling debris, drowning in a flood, getting attacked by giant insects, being chopped to bits by a lawnmower and being eaten alive. Despite the kids' ability to defy death, they still have to witness their beloved pet ant get murdered right before their eyes! Rick Moranis plays Wayne Szalinski, an absentminded scientist who invents a dangersome shrink ray capable of instantly destroying organic material, and he leaves it running in an unlocked room in the home he shares with his two children. In addition to being a negligent parent, his relationship with wife is tenuous. We have to hope that they don't get divorced, even though his family would be much safer getting as far from this man as humanly possible.  Join us as we discuss every detail of this creepy classic, clarify Einstein’s contributions to science, and discover why Keating's childhood dog died. Don't you just hate it when one of your experiments at the high-tech laboratory near Las Vegas goes horribly wrong and your 2-year old son grows to a hundred feet tall? Right? It's the worst! OK, so maybe not all of us can share Wayne Szalinski's pain, but it's there to see in the 1992 sequel Honey, I Blew Up The Kid starring Rick Moranis, Lloyd Bridges, and Keri Russell. Yes, really, the pre-Felicity Russell plays the romantic interest of Wayne's son, which is why he ends up tying her up at one point in this movie, bound and gagged. (Maybe that's not exactly why. But still.) Gabe and Josh are taking on this big baby for the new episode of Mousterpiece Cinema, and as you might expect, there's a bit of disagreement about what kind of sequel this is: not bad or all bad. Plus, another round of Gabe's Celebrity Crushes, which is distressingly becoming a thing on the show. Check it out now!
