Bonnie Marcus started her corporate career at an entry-level position and worked her way up to the top of a national company by using her savvy promotion and relational skills. Her passion is now to help other women learn to be sensitive to the culture of their organization, embrace the politics, and actively and intentionally move their careers forward with a sound strategic plan. Bonnie is the author of two books, The Politics of Promotion, and her latest book, Not Done Yet!, which she dives into on this week's episode! Key takeaways: A little bit about Bonnie and how she got started in leadership coaching. Bonnie took on a job that she was underqualified for, but you know what, say yes and then learn as you go. So many women will not apply for a job they don't think they're qualified for. Just apply! What's the worst that can happen? You not being an expert in something is actually okay! Someone's got to start somewhere. What's the difference between being “too much” vs. having executive presence? What made Bonnie want to leave corporate America? It's absolutely doable to build your business on the side while working a career. How does Bonnie help women with their careers? Do your research about the company before you accept the job offer. Do they promote women? What are your expectations in terms of support from your employer? What's the risk of asking for money? There isn't. Just do it. Practice your negotiation skills with a friend or a coach! Do you have to quit your job in order to get the respect you need, especially if you were a “lower tier” worker in the very beginning? When Kathy had her career, she didn't know how to advocate for herself. What's Bonnie's new book all about? Bonnie was SHOCKED to discover how so many women wake up worried their employer will find out their age. Ageism in the workplace is happening and women are being punished for their looks. Are you too old to get promoted? Be your badass self. Do women in the workplace have other women they can depend on? Kathy was so afraid to join a male-dominated mastermind group (they were all in their 30s), but she is so glad she did. She was embraced by different people from all walks of life that really encouraged her to succeed. It was herself putting judgments about her age onto herself, not them. Your limiting beliefs may be holding you back from playing all out. So many women think they're “too old” to start over. You're not!!! Resources: Bonniemarcusleadership.com Bonnie on LinkedIn Not Done Yet!: How Women Over 50 Regain Their Confidence and Claim Workplace Power, by Bonnie Marcus Quotes: “When doors open for you, don't say no. It is possible to learn by doing.” “Be your badass self. Connect with who you are, authentically, owning your story, what battles have you fought and won. You're here now, look at all the wisdom you've had.” “We're really making strides and women supporting each other is what's going to help us all get there.”
Today's guest on this Best Of Edition of the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast is Kathy Martin of prealgebrateachers.com! Over the years Shane Sams has helped thousands of family-focused entrepreneurs start, build, and grow online businesses of their own. Several years ago Kathy joined the Flipped Lifestyle Community and started her online journey. She struggled her first year and after getting her first members - they quit. Kathy was relentless, prolific, and consistent. Now, she leads an amazing online community of over 500 members! In today's episode we talk about: How desire was critical at the beginning of Kathy's online business journey Overcoming mindset issues that entrepreneurs face every step in their journey How Kathy says “NOPE” when fear creeps into her mind to try to stop her growth Show Notes What triggered you to start your membership? (8:00) Kathy Martin had taught elementary school for a few years. But, one day she got an email saying she would have to teach high school students if she wanted a job - an age group she wasn't passionate about teaching. It was through that situation that she realized she didn't matter to that school system. When you come to those realization moments (much ink Kathy's), you know that you have to make another choice. To start a business and become an online entrepreneur - many times it is this moment that triggers us to change our families' future and change our trajectory. Having hundreds or thousands of people in your membership, not only do you matter - you are leading and matter to a LOT of people! Having grit - not giving up. (22:00) There was a time when what Kathy was trying to do in the online space just wasn't working. There were times she could have given up but that God she didn't! We all go through those moments (especially as entrepreneurs) when we feel like giving up on our dreams. In those moments Kathy reflected on the issues she was having and the fact that she could solve those same problems for so many others. She knew she had to refuse to quit for them and herself too! Kathy's N.O.P.E system. (26:00) When Kathy is struggling with her mindset and imposter system she breaks her thoughts down like this: N - Notices what she is thinking. O - Opposes those “who am I” thoughts with remembering who she is. P - Programs a new thought. E - Exits the old thought. You control your thoughts - whatever you want to feel, you can feel it. If you keep thinking, “who is going to listen to me,” then those thoughts become your reality! What your threshold? (35:00) We all have a threshold that we want to achieve to feel comfortable enough to go full force into our online business. It's smart to have a safety net and security when you're starting - but there comes a time when you reach the threshold in your business that you don't need the first income anymore (and it holds you back). These days, for better or worse, TV news crews are often among the first to arrive on the scene of a breaking story. But it hasn’t always been that way. In fact, before one particular event in 1949 that took place right here in Southern California, there was no long form, on-site live coverage of breaking news events the way that we see it now. In his new book, Southern California historian Bill Deverell goes back more than 70 years to a spring evening in April of 1949. 3-year-old Kathy Fiscus is playing with her 9-year-old sister and a cousin in a vacant lot in the city of San Marino. When Kathy missteps and falls down a dry well, the eyes of the world turned to SoCal for the next 48 hours, waiting with bated breath to hear the fate of little Kathy as rescuers worked feverishly to try and save her in an effort that would, ultimately and tragically, prove futile. But the incident marked a seachange in the way breaking news was covered on television and radio. Because the site of the accident was so close to Mt. Wilson, where several radio towers were set up, local news was able to set up and broadcast the rescue attempt as it was happening in real time, something that had never been done before. Angelenos who were lucky or wealthy enough to own a television set at the time sat in their living rooms glued to their sets while the rest of the city crowded around the windows of hardware stores where TV sets for sale were tuned to the coverage. But wherever they were watching, one thing was clear: the city, the nation and the world were transfixed on the rescue attempt happening live in real time, and both reality TV and long form breaking news coverage today are the results of what happened during those fateful few days. Today on AirTalk, USC historian Bill Deverell joins Larry Mantle to talk about his new book on the Kathy Fiscus tragedy and how it changed the way breaking news is covered on TV and radio here in Los Angeles and across the nation. Tomorrow, Wednesday, March 10th at 6:00 p.m., Bill Deverell joins Patt Morrison for a virtual conversation to celebrate the book’s launch. To sign up, click here. On Tuesday, March 16th at 6:00 p.m. Vroman’s Bookstore is putting on a virtual discussion on the book with Bill and Los Angeles Times columnist Robin Abcarian. To reserve your tickets, click here. Guest: Bill Deverell, author of “Kathy Fiscus: A Tragedy That Transfixed the Nation” (Angel City Press, March 2021); he is professor of history at the University of Southern California and director of the Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West

Brandon shares a bit about who he is and how he found the path he is on now. Education was at the top of the list in his household, but Brandon has horrible listening skills. He tries to memorize everything instead. After trying to figure out “the next thing” in Brandon’s life, he stumbled upon the idea of creating a fishing magazine. Brandon taught himself a lot of the things to bring this magazine to life. He had a limited budget but unlimited time. Brandon needed money, so he took a job and literally worked in a closet to bootstrap his business. After seeing a news article on how Yahoo raised money for their company, Brandon thought he’d go ahead and try it too. The only thing was… he needed a business plan. Jeff Bezos sent Brandon a T-shirt for the work that he was doing. Brandon shares how he ended up selling his online magazine. How do you raise money? You work your ass off. Brandon had a home office back when it wasn’t cool. He shares a funny story about a big-time investor coming to his house… and expecting an office. Brandon has to keep creating, if he doesn’t, he gets depressed. Entrepreneurship just makes sense to Brandon. When Kathy left her nine to five, she felt like she had to quit. It was either she quit or she die. Want to find the next big thing? Take a break. You can find a million reasons to be mad. The real challenge in life is finding the good things. Brandon shares some of his favorite comedians. What’s Brandon up to now that he’s in lockdown? Brandon shares a little bit about his podcast and his business. Year ago when I met Dr. Sarno, he explained to me why he no longer prescribed Physical Therapy. He said that when people focused so much on a "physical solution" for an issue that has an emotional genesis, they would be blocked from healing. I agree with him, when we look at it like this. And, over years of practice, I have realized that there is a place for things like PT, Therapeutic Massage, Accupuncture, and other "physical" interventions when they are approached through the lens of love, not fear. When Kathy reached out to me, I knew I wanted to share her story. A PT who suffered with back and leg pain for years, healed herself completely through JournalSpeak, and now wants to created teamwork with allied medical professionals about PT's place in this work. Paul from Bothell is really concerned about the behavior of his girlfriend Kathy. He says she has gotten it into her head that now is a great time for a Road Trip. He says she is normally not this stubborn but she is really digging in on this one, insisting on getting in the car and going through several states to see her family in Colorado. He admits it’s probably cabin fever, but he can’t get through to her how dangerous it is for her and her family given all the truck stops and gas stations and fast food places she will have to hit on the way. When Kathy comes on, she is really irritated that Paul is not understanding how the quarantine is affecting her mental health and that what she is planning is well thought out and will be carefully done. She says the real problem is that Paul is a total control freak and maybe she just needs to get away from him.

How can you train an “untrainable” dog? Do such dogs even exist? When Kathy met Maya, a six-month old border collie with a sweet temperament, she had already been re-homed three times and Kathy was her fourth. Each owner said the same thing as the last. Maya was out of control. She was “untrainable.” Poor Maya had a rough time of it but thankfully, Kathy wasn’t about to give up on her. She took what her previous owners said with a grain of salt. After all, how bad could it be? What followed was months of foundation building, bonding, and training. What do you get when you combine an impressive education, experience in tech marketing, and a love of stand-up comedy and storytelling? You get Kathy Klotz-Guest, founder of Keeping It Human! Kathy is a textbook example of creative problem solving and out-of-the-box thinking. People create products and services. People use products and services. Yet the traditional approaches Kathy found in her mid-90's tech marketing jobs seemed to completely ignore the people and humanity. As intelligent humans are prone to do, Kathy saw a problem, then set out to solve it. Armed with the skills she was honing doing stand-up company and improv after hours, Kathy started to introduce idea that telling stories and bringing humanity into the picture could change everything in marketing. Long before YouTube and social media changed the face of marketing, Kathy was laying the groundwork. Improv and comedy were fun and invigorating. Corporate tech marketing was not. Armed with the idea that people relate to real people, humor and even vulnerability, Kathy left the corporate world behind and set out to turn marketing and selling on its ear. She was brave enough to call the marketing establishment on its tone-deafness. Using the first feedback coming back across the early Internet, Kathy started to convince the establishment that she was on to something. Marketing was really storytelling. It required experimentation and risk taking and a willingness for brands to abandon the safety of the corporate monolithic image. Brands had to become human, and Kathy was ready to teach that lesson. What followed was 20 years of innovation and creativity in storytelling on both business and comedy staged in the San Fransisco Bay area. There have been seminars, workshops, speaking engagements, and books. When Kathy says things, smart marketers listen. Her commitment to creatively changing the face of that business is paying off, and its a GREAT story. Imagine that? An expert storyteller with a great story to tell. Thanks Kathy! When Kathy heard about Maya, she felt compelled to see what this little Border Collie was all about. Maya needed a home to call her own with someone who could communicate on her level. She found that home, and that person with Kathy. She also found a bunch of other dog friends, and some interesting reactions to them! Maya’s story is one filled with excitement, a willingness to learn and an eagerness to work. But it wasn’t without challenges. Tune in to this episode of Enlightened By Dogs to hear all about her rescue rehab story! How hard can it be to train a border collie? The longest leashing in history and emergency dental surgery. Building a foundation with a wild and compulsive herding dog. How past punishment impacted Maya’s personality. How Kathy nurtured a brilliant partnership with Maya. “Shaking my head at the failure of her 3 previous owners to train her, I pondered: How hard can it be to train a 6 month old Border Collie?” “Maya's rehab focused on my number one rule: Don’t ask your dog to do a thing unless you’re 95% or more certain that your dog can do the thing.” “I heard her needs and I worked on our partnership foundation at her pace.” Want More of Kathy? This episode has been in the making for quite some time. Last season I interviewed a woman named, Kristen, who had a terrifying experience as a child while taking swimming lessons at an old hotel. The story is called “Tanya” and is ep. 8 of season 1 in case you missed. It’s a good one and there are a lot of evidence from other guests of this hotel who claim that a little ghost girl still roams the halls to this day. Not long after the episode aired, Kristen’s mother, Kathy, sent me an email saying that she had her own paranormal encounter from when she was a teenager that she’d like to share. I interviewed her and knew that it was a story I had to tell. When Kathy was 14 years old she convinced her family to let her stay home alone while they went on a camping trip. But after two long dog days of summer, Kathy was yearning for some company...especially from Boy…her friend who lived in her Ouija Board. What happened that night was just as unexpected as it was terrifying and would be the end of their unique friendship. So, sit back, try to relax as you remember that this story, The Boy in the Board, is based on true events.
091 Kathy Jackson—Greyhound Pets of America Rescuing Greyhounds From Misconceptions—Greyhound Pets of America As a U.S. mail carrier, Kathy Jackson also carried treats for the dogs on her routes. One of her very special "friends" was a former racing greyhound. When Kathy retired, she knew exactly what type of dog she wanted. She adopted Manny, a newly retired racer who won her heart. Kathy doesn't use the word "rescue" very often in her conversations about greyhound racing. Too many people have the misconception that the dogs are mistreated during their competitive phase, which is far from the reality. Nor are they euthanized when those racing days are over. Greyhound Pets of America (GPA) steps in to find responsible, loving homes for the retirees. People like Kathy and her husband. GPA sponsors weekly Meet 'n' Greets at local pet stores, inviting greyhound owners to come with their dogs to talk with interested people about the desirability of retired greyhounds as pets. Many people have another misconception that such a big dog might not fit well into a family situation or even be OK in an apartment. But standing there, petting such a gentle giant and listening to enthusiastic owners, people gain a new perspective. Across the U.S. through the efforts of the organization's volunteers, more than 200,000 greyhounds have found their forever homes. In 2017 alone the Nashville Chapter placed 92. In addition to the Meet 'n' Greets, volunteers help adoptive parents know and understand what "responsible" greyhound ownership is. For example, zoomies! The hounds are bred for speed, and unlike some other hound breeds their strength is sight—not scent. If the dog were off leash in an open area and something caught its attention, it would instinctively set off. Greyhounds are the second fastest land animal (behind cheetahs); they can reach 40 miles per hour in three strides! So intent, they don't respond to an owner's voice and they are unaware of such things as cars. When they do slow down, they may have no idea of how to find their way back since sight, not scent, is their guide. Instead, allowing the hound to zoom around a fenced yard for a few minutes or taking two 20-minute walks a day are responsible—and adequate. Those always lead to a good long nap or two or three. Greyhounds are easy keepers. In addition to adoptive parents, GPA chapters need volunteers as foster parents, exposing the animals to experiences different from the ones they had as racers, for example, seeing a cat or a child for the first time, going up and down stairs, or walking on slippery wood floors rather than on a dirt track and concrete. Also, the chapters seek board members. As one, Kathy keeps the website current. If you want to learn more about volunteering or about the greyhounds, visit the site, greyhoundpets.org. Or check in your area for a Meet 'n' Greet at a local pet store. In Nashville you can find Kathy many Saturdays at PetSmart in 100 Oaks Mall. Manny will be there too. Check out www.greyhoundpets.org.

We decided to do most of the work ourselves to really connect with the property, the landscape and the people. We have endured all that the elements and mountains could throw at us in exchange for an amazing, fulfilling experience and a lovely new home and believe that we have created a comfortable, sympathetically renovated home. Milling About visits The Carriage House Inn Bed and Breakfast in Lynchburg, Virginia. Located in historic Daniels Hill, the house dates back to 1878 when it was owned by hardware store magnate Richard Watts who had 11 children. The mansion was restored to it's original grandeur by owners Kathy and Mike Bedsworth. Celebrating their 10 anniversary in the house; it was originally meant for Mike's pet project. He tells host Robin Milling he stripped 1800s paint off the mantels to their original woodwork, keeping features like a winding staircase with coffin corners, and claw foot bathtubs. Hoping to find attic treasures, Kathy says they found 18 inches of pigeon poop! Each of the four rooms is named for a Watts. Mike says a child is haunting the house, "We've had a little girl speak to some of the guests." Paranormal experts recorded her saying, 'Come here...I'm dead.' Staying in Richard Watts' room, Robin swears she felt someone tickling her toes in the middle of the night! It seems the ghosts are friendly and amiable. When Kathy would smell smoke with no signs of fire, they reasoned it was Richard Watts smoking his cigar. They reminded him it was a non-smoking house and the smell went away! Breakfast is seasonal like pumpkin waffles for fall, and gingerbread and chocolate waffles for winter.
Kathy studied Seimei in the USA and Japan for several years. She recently returned from her 10th trip to Saga, Japan to study at the main headquarters. Kathy is the Foundation Director for the Seimei Foundation located in Hawthorne, NJ. She has "worked on" thousands of people over the years with amazing results. When Kathy found Seimei, she was suffering from an undiagnosed illness that left her bedridden. She was very weak, tired, and unable to use her arms because they were very heavy and weak. Kathy was also unable to keep her head up. She had been to orthopedists, neurologists, general practitioners, etc. and no one knew what was wrong. Kathy quit her job and went to bed! 6 months later feeling no better, a friend suggested that she try try Seimei. Kathy was reluctant because she was sure she had tried it all. Since Kathy studied and practiced Reiki, Massage, Classical homeopathy and had many friends who were "healers", she was sure nothing was going to help her. But then a friend onvinced her to give Seimei a try. Two weeks later Kathy began weekly Seimei sessions and her health began to improve in all areas. Kathy volunteers her time taking away stress & pain from participants at the Avon Cancer walk, AIDS walks, Eva's Village in Paterson on the staff and residents, nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Also on students at William Paterson University, Montclair University and Bergen Community College. She did Seimei at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in NYC for the staff. Kathy always demonstrates Seimei for free to anyone interested.
