Does the name Vitruvi sound familiar? Founded by Sara Panton, CEO, along with her brother, the brand is one of the largest aromatherapy companies offering luxury essential oil blends and diffusers. Its products are in more than 300 stores in Canada, the United States and Australia, and it's the first essential oil brand to be stocked by retail giants Nordstrom and Sephora. Sara's background in health, her travels around the world, and her fascination for how traditional botanicals can be used in modern ways were the foundation for what has become the number-one aromatherapy brand in the country. Vitruvi was launched in Vancouver while Sara was still attending med school with nothing more than a website about essential oils, which grew into a thriving business amidst the expanding wellness segment. Sara's passion is helping women transform the simple moments of their days into experiences that elevate their well-being. Her hope is always the same: to help women take care of themselves so they can take on the world, something she knows a thing or two about! This season of our podcast is brought to you by TD Canada Women in Enterprise. Sara Harowitz is one smart and witty woman. She's also a wordsmith at heart, a long-time editor of publications such as the Huffington Post, SAD Mag, and MONTECRISTO Magazine. By day, she's the director of content at vitruvi, where she led the creation of their in-house print & digital publication Our Natural Habitat. By night, she's a literary agent at Westwood Creative Artists—it's a recent side gig she landed, specializing in narrative nonfiction authors and helping bring their ideas to life. She grew up in the suburbs of Richmond, a quiet and bookish young girl with two older brothers. Her father is an intellectual and a businessman, her mother a primary school teacher. During her teens, in addition to her love for books, dance was her main extra curricular: ballet, contemporary, jazz, and hip hop. Sara applied to Toronto Metropolitan University for their journalism program, where she found her groove in magazines and editing. After Toronto, she returned to home as a freelancer until landing her first job at the Huffington Post, officially launching her career as an editor. In 2022, Sara spent some of the summer in London, taking her certificate in Publishing through Columbia at Oxford University. In this conversation, we talk about the natural way she found herself in journalism; what viral content was like when she first started as an editor and how she's seen it evolve over the years; the HuffPo being at the frontline for how news was produced for a younger audience; what makes a good journalist; the process of creating Our Natural Habitat and vitruvi's refreshed branding; the state of publishing right now and #booktok; what a literary agent does; traditional publishing vs. self-publishing; and much more. Please enjoy this exploration of life, journalism and many other things with the incredible Sara Harowitz.Much love,MayTIMESTAMPS5:45 - Growing up13:45 - Her as a teen and her passions then15:40 - Knowing she wanted to be a writer 20:33 - Viral content when she started and how she's seen it change over the years24:20 - What makes a good journalist and her core values28:46 - Her heroes in journalism 31:35 - Creative process for making a magazine 36:34 - Vitruvi rebrand 38:28 - Surprising facts about the publishing industry she hadn't known before40:53 - What a literary agent is and does41:59 - Self publishing vs. traditional publishing45:14 - How advances work and what it means for the author & publishers47:22 - A book that she often gifts to others48:47 - Is there a literary character that she most identifies with?48:47 - How she feels about the written word and what it has brought to her life54:35 - Final questionToday's SponsorsBefore Company: https://beforecompany.com/discount/CRAFT10 - get 10% off your entire order; one-time use per customer; no expiry dateotō healing: https://www.instagram.com/otohealing/ - email otohealing at gmail.com to get 10% off your initial sound therapy session

In April of 2022, the design-forward home scenting company, vitruvi, made a bold move that shocked their followers; they archived their entire Instagram feed, leaving up only a 3-grid with the phrase, “change is in the air.” Their followers guessed new packaging or the introduction of a brand color, but vitruvi took it a few steps further with an entire rebrand, launched in one day. The rebrand was impossible to ignore on social media, with posts from their 250+ affiliates sporting their new signature “Homebody” sweatshirt going live on the feed. A move that had been two years in the making, vitruvi saw a 50% increase in social media engagement following the launch. For episode 53, we're sitting down with vitruvi's Senior Brand Marketing Manager, Scout Shmygol, to dive deeper into the rebrand. Scout takes us through the process from inspiration to design and launch. We talk about vitruvi's goals with sonic marketing, disruption in the air care space and future-proofing their business. She also lets us in on the major change they made the week of the relaunch. On today's episode, I'm chatting with co-founder of Vitruvi, Sara Panton. Vitruvi is a natural home-scents brand and is popularly known for their diffuser line of sleek products and clean, carefully-sourced essential oil blends. The brand's journey from being a home business to now being sold on the shelves of top retailers such as Anthropologie and Nordstrom is incredibly inspiring so I'm excited to share Sara's words of wisdom for how Vitruvi has grown to what it is Today. We talk on bootstrapping and funding during the early days of Vitruvi, tips for making new hires, building partnerships, marketing success, and so much more. Starting out doing makeup for friend's student films, the early days of Justine Sweetman's makeup artist journey consisted of hustling in NYC and finding jobs through, of all places, Craigslist. Eventually, Justine got connected with the right people, which snowballed into being able to work freelance full time. The clients she has worked with include the likes of Nylon, i-D, ORIBE, Zadig & Voltaire, Cosmopolitan, Refinery29, New York Times, Women's Health, and American Eagle, just to name a few. A couple of years into her makeup career, Justine found a new love for producing and soon after she co-founded REALnew Collective, a production company and community of artists that creates, develops, and produces film and digital media. They've worked with brands such as Club Monaco, Montiel, Jonesy, and Vitruvi to produce films that are rooted in care, respect and collaboration. On top of all that Justine has going on in her life, she is also the founder of the Fashion Workers Initiative, a community and advocacy group for freelancers working in the fashion industry. As an organization of volunteers, their mission is to end the exploitation of independent contractors in the New York fashion industry. In this episode of the podcast, Justine breaks down the reality of working freelance in fashion, the red flags and precautions to look out for before taking on freelance work, and the power in saying no. “Regret smells like tequila and cigarettes.” “Home smells like linen and lavender.” “The smell of my boyfriend's t-shirt feels like Heaven.” Scent plays a such major part in our mood, in our well-being, in our memories and more. In this week's episode of “It Sure is a Beautiful Day” Catt is joined by the co-founder of award-winning air care company, Vitruvi. CEO Sara Panton and her brother set out to enhance the quality of our lives and change the face of the industry by creating 100% all natural non-toxic essential oils and diffusers. Not only is it healthy ‘air care', but Vitruvi looks gorgeous in your home. Sleek, chic, and stylish. Beyond discussing this company's respectable clean mission and services, we also hear Sara's story. She grew up on an organic farm in Canada, then pursued a traditional path in medicine, but ultimately woke up to her spirit's yearning to start her own company. And then answered that call while using school loans and credit cards to get the business off the ground! Whether you're looking for some unique holiday gifts for your loved ones this year or are an entrepreneur looking for some advice on how to build a successful business like Vitruvi, this conversation is full of takeaways. The Modern Male Designer. Shane Ward grew up in Detroit, one half of a set of identical twins, and one of seven siblings. By his own account, those streets where he learned to play football were dangerous, but it was there that he gained confidence stemming from a talent for the sport. While caddying for a local golf course in high school, Shane was exposed to all sorts of people and acquired an entirely new set of skills…people skills. After attending and graduating from the University Of Michigan, Shane found himself in Portland, Oregon designing some pretty impressive sneakers for Adidas, where more self-discovery was uncovered. He learned for the first time in his life to appreciate the great outdoors, and still does to this day. Shane went on to design shoes both in-house and freelance for big brands like Puma, Converse, Fila, Rockport, and so many more. He also co- founded, helmed, and designed for DETNY by Shane & Shawn, the men's and women’s shoe collection he created with his twin brother. The line was sold in large stores like Macy's and they opened a stand-alone boutique in the heart of New York’s Nolita. Discovery continues for the true-blue creative. He’s begun painting again, and his large-scale pieces combine his appreciation for both the sneakers that inspire him and elements of nature. Today, Shane is creative director for G111 Apparel Group, in charge of footwear for DNKY men’s, the heritage brand, Bass, and others. Story + Rain founder Tamara has known Shane for a very long time and this podcast reflects that. Shane tells his life story, gets into his career’s trajectory, discusses the things that inspire him, how he sets the scene for creative flow, and brings us into his world of the modern male shoe designer with an extraordinarily unique perspective. Sara Panton is the co-founder and CEO of Vitruvi, a premium essential oils company that she started with her brother I am entirely obsessed with. Sara’s interest in scent deepened when she learned about its effect on the limbic system, which is our brain’s emotional centre, in a neurology course while she was studying to get a degree in Global Health with plans to become a doctor. This discovery, layered with her love of culture and natural medicine, sparked a deeper passion for the science of scent, and its potential to help in her busy days. She saw this as an opportunity to make a larger impact than seeing patients 1 on 1 and chose to spread her knowledge of the benefits of scent association by way of Vitruvi where she is delivering essential oils to the masses. On today's episode we talk about the power of scent association and how the brain loves familiarity and patterns, how essential oils can help get your mind in the right space for whatever task is at hand, the importance of checking in with your ego and really asking yourself why you are doing certain things, making sure that whatever story you're telling yourself is still serving you and the power of daily rituals.

Today we are talking all things essential oils with the CEO of Vitruvi, Sara Panton! Vitruvi started as a passion project by Sara and her brother after Sara decided to leave medical school. They committed to many late nights while working multiple jobs. By combining Sara’s background in medical anthropology, her love for the science of scent, and her brother’s entrepreneurial skills, they’ve developed a line to complement your daily rituals. Sara shares the advice she’d give to someone pursuing their passion while still in their career. In our conversation, Sara explains the science behind scent and our limbic system, and why smells can trigger memories. She dives deep into the history of essential oils, how they are created, and why they have such a positive effect on our emotions and immune system. And of course, we had to ask… which oils are best for blemish spot treatments, high stress, and what’s the sexiest scent! We also talk about: Face tools for skin beauty Products to use for cystic acne Carrier oils vs. essential oils How Sara cares for herself as an entrepreneur Why Vitruvi doesn’t promote ingestion of E.O. We discuss energy, leadership + the role social media plays in hiring.
Vitruvi is a wellness brand based out of Vancouver, Canada. In this episode Michelle sits down with Sara Panton, co-founder and CEO, they discuss wellness rituals and routines, Sara recently being nominated in this years Forbes 30 under 30 , some of her favourite essential oil blends of the season and new products in the companies pipeline.
On this episode, I’m joined by vitruvi co-founder, Sara Panton. From collaborating with Goop to making it onto this year’s Forbes 30 under 30 list, Sara shares her defining moments of success and what balance means to her (hint - it’s not what you think). We waste no time and get down to business. Sara opens up as to why she chose to design for women, where she garners inspiration (hello Vogue and National Geographic) and bootlegging essential oils (I kid, but we do talk about it). 2019 is going to be a big year for Sara (she wrote a book in a month!), and I get a glimpse into what the future holds.
