Here is Sew & So episode #1… This podcast explores Bisa Butler's fascinating journey, which began with her getting a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting at Howard University. Realizing painting was not her passion, she went on to Montclair University to pursue a Master in Teaching. It was there, while making a quilt in her first-ever fibers class, that she had an artistic epiphany; she realized she could do what she loved, express her creativity in a way that moved her deeply, and tell the countless untold stories of African Americans.  Each pivotal step in her journey is described in fascinating detail. She talks about learning to sew from her grandmother; a black woman, and wife of an Emissary, who found herself transported to Morocco. She and her husband had to attend many formal events, and since they couldn't afford to buy the refined clothing, one was required to wear, her grandmother would pore through fashion magazines and create replicas of designer outfits. The scraps of fibers and fabrics from those outfits can be seen in Bisa's portraits of her grandmother and grandfather. She explains how using little bits of their lives helped inform her work. Butler describes her work as “excavating the soul, where her own spirit has a conversation with someone who has long passed. The process begins with a portrait. By gazing into the eyes of her subject and really looking at the lines, creases, scars and the expression in their eyes, she can ‘hear' their unspoken story. She spoke of the improvisational nature of private quilts and their ability to tell the personal experiences of her people (21:20 – 24:21). As she details her journey through galleries and museums, Butler recounts the bias that was shown towards artists who use cloth in their art. But through all the rejections and dismissals, she kept at it, slow and steady, until her work exhibited at a New York gallery. After that, her work began getting accepted at more galleries and museums. Her fiber and fabric creation, The Storm, the Whirlwind, and the Earthquake features a life‐sized representation of abolitionist and social reformer Fredrick Douglass whose magnetic gaze pulled her in. This piece is a powerful example of how Butler's painterly textiles convey a sense of shared humanity were on exhibit at the Toledo Museum of Art. Her textile creations were exhibited in the European Painting Gallery Space at the Art Institute of Chicago in 2021. This is the first time a living artist has been showcased in this space. Her work iwasalso featured in Dress Up, Speak Up: Regalia and Resistance at the 21C Museum Hotel in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was a joy to learn about the strides fiber, fabric and quilting artists have made, and we owe much of it to Bisa Butler. Her personal story of using textiles and the medium of quilting to celebrate her heritage and her community and her powerful art is a great inspiration to us all. In November 2017, he was appointed by Governor-elect Phil Murphy to serve on the gubernatorial transition team relative to legal issues and social justice. Additionally, was also appointed as an adjunct professor at both Monmouth University and Montclair University. He has also continued to present and lecture extensively on multiple legal subjects for the New Jersey State Bar Association, the New Jersey Association of Professional Mediators, the Association of Professional Family Mediators, and other legal and  professional organizations.  He has served  on the New Jersey State Bar Association's Legal Education Committee and    has also served as the Vice-Chair of the NJSBA Dispute Resolution Section (DRS). He has also been appointed to the Board of Directors of the New Jersey Association of Professional Mediators.  Joni Jones is a registered nurse, board certified in psychiatric and mental health nursing, who retired from the New Jersey State Board of Nursing, serving the public   under two separate Governors (Jon Corzine/Chris Christie). Our podcast guest this week is Grace Marcus (Visible Signs, Touchpoint Press, May 2022). Grace, a debut author at 75 years old, shares lessons she learned along the line, including not signing with the first agent who makes an offer to trusting your gut when it comes to major rewrites. We discuss her marketing initiatives which include talks at senior centers and short writing workshops in exchange for a book purchase at libraries as well as her writing process, which she describes as “creep, creep, creep, lurch.”  Grace Marcus holds a Master in Theatre Arts from Montclair University. This episode explores Bisa Butler's fascinating journey, which began with her getting a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting at Howard University. Realizing painting was not her passion, she went on to Montclair University to pursue a Master's in Teaching. It was there, while making a quilt in her first-ever fibers class, that she had an artistic epiphany;  she realized she could do what she loved, express her creativity in a way that moved her deeply, and tell the countless untold stories of African Americans.Each pivotal step in her journey is described in fascinating detail. She talks about learning to sew from her grandmother; a black woman, and wife of an Emissary, who found herself transported to Morocco. She and her husband had to attend many formal events, and since they couldn't afford to buy the refined clothing one was required to wear, her grandmother would pore through fashion magazines and create replicas of designer outfits. The scraps of fibers and fabrics from those outfits can be seen in Bisa's portraits of her grandmother and grandfather. She explains how using little bits of their lives helped inform her work.  Butler describes her work as “excavating the soul, where her own spirit has a conversation with someone who has long passed. The process begins with a portrait.  By gazing into the eyes of her subject and really looking at the lines, creases, scars, and the expression in their eyes, she can ‘hear' their unspoken story.  She spoke of the improvisational nature of private quilts and their ability to tell the personal experiences of her people (21:20 – 24:21).  As she details her journey through galleries and museums, Butler recounts the bias that was shown towards artists who use cloth in their art. But through all the rejections and dismissals, she kept at it, slow and steady, until her work was exhibited at the Seraleli Gallery in New York.  From that moment, her work began getting accepted at more galleries and museums.  Her latest fiber and fabric creation, The Storm, the Whirlwind, and the Earthquake features a life-sized representation of abolitionist and social reformer Fredrick Douglass whose magnetic gaze pulled her in. This piece is a powerful example of how Butler's painterly textiles convey a sense of shared humanity. It is currently on exhibit at the Toledo Museum of Art.    Her textile creations are also being exhibited in the European Painting Gallery Space at the Art Institute of Chicago through September 6, 2021.  This is the first time a living artist has been showcased in this space. Her work is also featured in Dress Up, Speak Up: Regalia and Resistance at the 21C Museum Hotel in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Another point he makes is: WIIFM. What's In It For Me? Don't just write emails that say do this, or use this new product. Write it in a way that makes the reader feel they will benefit from whatever it is that you are asking them to do in the email. Sponsored by New Jersey Amistad Commission, Director Stephanie Wilson hosted by Montclair University.  "AS AMERICANS WE are taught that slavery was abolished after the Civil War. A close reading of the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution reveals, however, that this was not exactly the case. Although this amendment did outlaw slavery for the majority of American citizens, anyone convicted of a crime could still, quite legally, be kept in a state of bondage without claims on civil liberties and without remuneration for their forced labor.Following the passage of the 13th Amendment former slave-owners in the Deep South, designed laws to entrap and convict newly freed blacks and return them to servitude.  Pollard and Blackmon reveal a dirty secret. Much of the South was built on forced Black labor after slavery was declared unconstitutional in 1863. Blacks who were wrongly convicted of crimes, no matter how insignificant- vagrancy or the theft of a pig worth more than $1 were often given long sentences . There are thousands of those letters in the National Archives in Washington D.C. that tell of horrors endured by men and women found guilty of insignificant offenses."

Kathy studied Seimei in the USA and Japan for several years. She recently returned from her 10th trip to Saga, Japan to study at the main headquarters. Kathy is the Foundation Director for the Seimei Foundation located in Hawthorne, NJ. She has "worked on" thousands of people over the years with amazing results. When Kathy found Seimei, she was suffering from an undiagnosed illness that left her bedridden. She was very weak, tired, and unable to use her arms because they were very heavy and weak. Kathy was also unable to keep her head up. She had been to orthopedists, neurologists, general practitioners, etc. and no one knew what was wrong. Kathy quit her job and went to bed! 6 months later feeling no better, a friend suggested that she try try Seimei. Kathy was reluctant because she was sure she had tried it all. Since Kathy studied and practiced Reiki, Massage, Classical homeopathy and had many friends who were "healers", she was sure nothing was going to help her. But then a friend onvinced her to give Seimei a try. Two weeks later Kathy began weekly Seimei sessions and her health began to improve in all areas. Kathy volunteers her time taking away stress & pain from participants at the Avon Cancer walk, AIDS walks, Eva's Village in Paterson on the staff and residents, nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Also on students at William Paterson University, Montclair University and Bergen Community College. She did Seimei at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in NYC for the staff.
