“On Banjo” In sunny a San Diego high school somewhere in the 70s, while kids were listening to Aerosmith and Van Halen and Boston, Alison Brown was listening to bluegrass. She had started on guitar but gravitated to the banjo and by her teens, she was already pretty proficient on the instrument. She won first place at the Canadian National Banjo Championship, played a gig at the Grand Ole Opry and toured one summer with fiddler Stuart Duncan. After high school She headed to Harvard, knocked out an MBA at UCLA and then went to work as an Investment Banker. You know—the typical bluegrass story you hear all the time. Thinking music was a weekend thing, Brown had a nice balance going but then music decided to tip the scales. Alison Krauss flashed the bat signal for a banjo player and Brown answered the call, and gave up her Wall Street environs for a life in music. And what a life it has been. An internationally recognized virtuoso on banjo, Brown has played with Alison Krauss, Michelle Shocked, fronted her own Alison Brown Quartet, toured all over the world, from Japan to South America, along the way playing The Kennedy Center, the Newport Folk Festival, The Cambridge Folk Festival in England and the Galway Arts Festival in Ireland. With a Grammy in her trophy case along with multiple Grammy nominations, features on CBS Sunday Morning, NPRs All Things Considered and close to 15 critically lauded albums under her belt, including her fabulous new one No Banjo, Alison Brown is an artistic force. And what of On Banjo? Well, putting it simply, it's a stunner. A deftly played album filled with technical prowess, musical finesse and compositional dexterity, On Banjo is a song cycle that's celebratory, joyful and cathartic. Brown is the co-founder of Compass Records Group, she serves on the Board of the Nashville Chapter of the Recording Academy and she's the co-chair of the Steve Martin Banjo Prize. She's kind of a big deal and guess what? She's as nice as can be. www.alisonbrown.com www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.embersarts.com www.alexgreenonline.com Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

When we're born, one of the first things we're ever taught is that we are either male or female-- and they come with their own set of gender rules and roles; very outdated ones. My guest today, Dr. Kim S. Clay, is founder of a non-profit organization that is determined to break through stigmas and even the playing field for young women growing up enjoying sports and STEM. In this podcast, we talk about her transition to building and growing Play Like a Girl full time, and the outdated terms we use that could very much be holding girls and young women back, by insinuating that femininity is negative -- I know I called myself a tomboy back then, but only now did I really understand it's potentially bad effects. Be sure to stick around and listen in on her advice for our young women! Episode Highlights: Dr. Kim's childhood and role of spirituality Her NGO, Play Like a Girl, how it came about and her inspiration The mentoring program and having representation Dr. Kim's transition to working on Play Like a Girl fulltime Why the term tomboy can be detrimental to young girls How Dr. Kim reacted to being told she'd be limited due to race and gender Her advice for young women and girls who want to pursue male-dominated careers About the Guest: Dr. Kimberly S. Clay is the founder and CEO of Play Like a Girl, her Nashville based non-profit organization dedicated to leveling the playing field for young girls in male-dominated careers like science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. With a reach of 25,000 young women across the world, Play Like a Girl is definitely making their progress felt. As a graduate of Xavier University in Louisiana, the University of Alabama, and also the Tulane University School of Public Health and Social Work, she started her career at the CDC as a public health analyst. It was her experience early in her career that she noticed the gaping gender gap. From her work in public health, she has received numerous recognitions such as being one of Xavier University's 40 Under 40, Nashville Business Journal's 50 People on the Move. As she moved forward in her career, she returned to the classroom where she taught and researched about long-term cancer survivorship in women. Dee will give us a little history lesson, we'll hear about the hotel, what they have been doing during this pandemic, of course, the women's suffrage celebration and we'll find out what it was like moving from England to Mississippi as a young girl, and how an independent Indian woman from the UK, figured out how to land a seat at the table. She does it all, while at the helm of such a majestic property, and as far as I'm concerned – she is the queen. A lady of distinction, let's roll out the red carpet for Dee Patel….

Robert Blagojevich, a small business owner and Real Estate Investor in Tennessee, is the author of 'Fundraiser A: My Fight for Freedom and Justice' (NIU Press, April 2015). This gripping memoir tells Robert's side of the events that transpired in 2009, when he was indicted along with his brother, then governor Rod Blagojevich, on federal corruption charges, after serving as head of Rod's fundraising operation. They were accused of attempting to sell Barack Obama's former senate seat to the highest bidder in 2008. In an era of heightened awareness of government surveillance and the danger of the unchecked power of federal prosecutors, Robert's book bears a vital message. Though the charges against him were ultimately dropped, Robert faced financial ruin and the destruction of his reputation in the trial, an excruciating experience that taught him about the need for Americans to defend their civil liberties and hold their public officials accountable. He hopes to spread the importance of that knowledge through 'Fundraiser A'. Robert has been actively involved in community service for his entire working career. He was board chair of the Nashville Chapter of the American Red Cross and later board chair of the YMCA Community Action Project (YCAP) an out reach program for at risk youth in East Nashville. He was on the board of trustees for the University of Tampa from 1998-2004. In May, 2008, Robert was the commencement speaker at graduation. http://www.robertblagojevich.com/ Connect with Robert on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/robert-blagojevich-348a1292/ Follow Jovica: IG: @asap_jovi FB: facebook.com/jovica LI: linkedin.com/in/jdjurdjevic/ As always feel free to contact us with constructive criticism, compliments, or ideas.
091 Kathy Jackson—Greyhound Pets of America Rescuing Greyhounds From Misconceptions—Greyhound Pets of America As a U.S. mail carrier, Kathy Jackson also carried treats for the dogs on her routes. One of her very special "friends" was a former racing greyhound. When Kathy retired, she knew exactly what type of dog she wanted. She adopted Manny, a newly retired racer who won her heart. Kathy doesn't use the word "rescue" very often in her conversations about greyhound racing. Too many people have the misconception that the dogs are mistreated during their competitive phase, which is far from the reality. Nor are they euthanized when those racing days are over. Greyhound Pets of America (GPA) steps in to find responsible, loving homes for the retirees. People like Kathy and her husband. GPA sponsors weekly Meet 'n' Greets at local pet stores, inviting greyhound owners to come with their dogs to talk with interested people about the desirability of retired greyhounds as pets. Many people have another misconception that such a big dog might not fit well into a family situation or even be OK in an apartment. But standing there, petting such a gentle giant and listening to enthusiastic owners, people gain a new perspective. Across the U.S. through the efforts of the organization's volunteers, more than 200,000 greyhounds have found their forever homes. In 2017 alone the Nashville Chapter placed 92. In addition to the Meet 'n' Greets, volunteers help adoptive parents know and understand what "responsible" greyhound ownership is. For example, zoomies! The hounds are bred for speed, and unlike some other hound breeds their strength is sight—not scent. If the dog were off leash in an open area and something caught its attention, it would instinctively set off. Greyhounds are the second fastest land animal (behind cheetahs); they can reach 40 miles per hour in three strides! So intent, they don't respond to an owner's voice and they are unaware of such things as cars. When they do slow down, they may have no idea of how to find their way back since sight, not scent, is their guide. Instead, allowing the hound to zoom around a fenced yard for a few minutes or taking two 20-minute walks a day are responsible—and adequate. Those always lead to a good long nap or two or three. Greyhounds are easy keepers. In addition to adoptive parents, GPA chapters need volunteers as foster parents, exposing the animals to experiences different from the ones they had as racers, for example, seeing a cat or a child for the first time, going up and down stairs, or walking on slippery wood floors rather than on a dirt track and concrete. Also, the chapters seek board members. As one, Kathy keeps the website current. If you want to learn more about volunteering or about the greyhounds, visit the site, greyhoundpets.org. Or check in your area for a Meet 'n' Greet at a local pet store. In Nashville you can find Kathy many Saturdays at PetSmart in 100 Oaks Mall. Manny will be there too. Check out www.greyhoundpets.org.
