WHY BOTHER... Have you ever been tricked into believing this when it comes to the desires and secret petitions of your heart? Depending on what you've experienced-the loss, the pain and the intense brokenness of things that you were not the cause of, you can feel like belief and faith are BIG risks.  You don't think that your heart can handle anymore so you'd rather not expect anything and just keep it moving at status quo. There's more for you.  Yes, believing from that space is uncomfortable, but the greater risk is refusing to activate your faith.   Ready for some practical steps to start dreaming again?   Have a topic you'd like to hear some Spirit-Filled Real Talk on?  Submit it here: info.julianapage@gmail.com Continue the Conversation on Instagram: @msjulianapage

How often do we sit down to face the blank page or canvas, only to get crippled by the paralyzing critic: "You can't do this, you're not good enough....WHY BOTHER?" What if, instead, you told yourself, "keep going, you've got this, your voice matters." This is the self-compassionate approach to creativity, and it's essential to your success. But some days, you need more. That's where Kristen Neff's work on fierce self-compassion comes in. Kristin Neff is the pioneer researcher of self-compassion and she has spent the last years studying how women can combine fierceness with self-compassion, which many of us have been in-cultured to reject. Listen in as we talk about: - What fierce self-compassion is and what it isn't - How it can help your creative process and your social justice work in the world - Why accepting all of ourselves is important for the creative process - The difference between "self-compassion" and "being nice" - The physiological upside to fierce self-compassion - What to do when you aren't creating regularly --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jennifer-louden/support

Lizzie Killian (FIFTYcc, chiptune rock band The Glowing Stars, formerly of Zynga, Humble Bundle, GamesRadar & more) joins this Weez-tastic episode of CrossFade! Something about “Pinkerton” caught Lizzie’s ear in high school. Maybe it was the rough production, disarmingly vulnerable lyrics, or just the solid solos – whatever it was, it quickly became one of her favorite albums ever. She even named her own band, The Glowing Stars, after a lyric from the track “Falling For You.” Matt’s pick, “A Laughing Death in Meatspace” by Australian psych rock band Tropical Fuck Storm, engages with the modern world in a way that doesn’t feel cheesy. It touches on politics, imperialism, class divide, human obsolescence, and more on top of unique, beautifully crunchy synth-and-overdrive textures. Ken Krantz has been funny his whole life. He had to be to get any attention growing up the youngest of eight kids in a real-life Brady Bunch situation. He started doing stand up in 2009 and quickly became a fixture on the Tri-State comedy scene, where he gained a reputation as a no holds barred joke writer. His laid back style combines self-deprecating humor, his views on fatherhood, and his take on pop culture and current events. He can be seen every month on his own show, Underground Comedy, at Gotham comedy club and has been featured on Rawdog Comedy on Sirius XM Radio. We begin to believe that desiring something other than what we have is somehow a negative feeling. We Creative Warriors talk a lot about finding our ‘why.' But what about getting to the why of your ‘why?' Part of what I write about in my upcoming book delves into what it is like to become self-employed in mid-life. I love coaching clients who are making big life and/or work changes later in life because it is a very different experience than doing it in youth. And the experience, in my opinion, is richer. It's interesting, then, to pose the question, “why bother?” Why now? What is it about this particular life that isn't working? Once you begin to own your experience- both the good and the bad - you can step into whatever the next phase might be.  To dive deeper into “getting our bother on” I've brought on personal growth pioneer, Jennifer Louden.  Jennifer helped launch the concept of self-care with her first bestseller, The Woman's Comfort Book. Since then, she's written six additional books on well-being and whole living, including The Woman's Retreat Book and The Life Organizer, with close to a million copies of her books in print in nine languages. Her newest is Why Bother? Discover the Desire for What's Next. Jennifer has spoken around the world, and has written a national magazine column for a Martha Stewart magazine, been quoted in two of Brené Brown's books, and has appeared on hundreds of TV programs, radio shows, and podcasts—even on Oprah. Find out why it is essential to answer the question of “why bother” by downloading this episode now.  THE WARRIOR OF COMPASSION “It is an essential act to be at peace with ourselves.” - Jennifer Louden Highlights - Asking ‘why bother?' is not about resignation. Sometimes your signature theme is not what you expect or want it to be.  Getting to know your ‘why bother' is not a selfish act. What cost are you willing to pay for a life that you're willing to bother about?  Asking ‘why bother' is not about beating yourself up. It's an opportunity for discernment.  ‘Shadow comforts' are the things we do that make us think we're taking care of ourselves but are actually taking us away from ourselves.  Wonder opens the door for desire.  Desire is evolutionary.  The ultimate source of desire is the soul's impulse to express itself in the world. The situation was desperate, a hot Instagram tip meant I only had 2 hours to rework a post and I needed a specific Planoly vs Later comparison. Before I go into why I found myself in that situation let me give you a bit of background. A few years ago I did some training on Instagram because I wanted to change my attitude towards the platform. You might find this quite surprising since so many small business owners and brands love Instagram. At the time you can easily classify my attitude towards Instagram as one that is a love-hate relationship. Yes, there are many people generating an income for themselves using Instagram. However, there are some that are doing this using methods that are fake and pretentious. It does not mean that they all are that way. For this reason, I wanted to give it a fair attempt. Sadly for me, the person running the course a few years back was using dubious methods which was a big turnoff for me. The truth is that Instagram can be a great place to get visibility for your business using authentic methods. In this post, you will learn about Later and Planoly, why I use them and which one you need to remain authentic and deliver value on Instagram. Why Bother with Scheduling Tools for Instagram This past week I was speaking with a potential client who was posting to Instagram everyday natively without using a scheduler. Just in case that wasn't clear enough, she was creating Instagram posts from scratch and leaving them in draft mode. She was doing this manually every day on the platform without getting sufficient visibility on her feed. You might be thinking that this is not so bad but let me ask you a question. If you want to get visibility across multiple platforms and/or scale your business exponentially do you think that is sustainable? Well, it is possible to do it 24/7 but the results will be overwhelming and there will be no time for anything else in your life. It is time to think about the reason you got into business in the first place. Gaining time freedom in your life does require some automation and outsourcing of monotonous tasks. Automation can be easily accomplished using scheduling tools like Planoly and Later. What About the Instagram Algorithm? I have heard a ton of people complain about the Instagram algorithm changing frequently. The thing is that the only thing consistent across social media, business and marketing is change. So, if you expect change then there should be no reason to complain at all. The key is to embrace the change and adapt your business processes to meet the new way of publishing. At this point, I would like to give a shout out to all those people who spend countless hours figuring out the change for the rest of us. One of the reasons I tend not to complain is because I would not like to be the one tasked with figuring out the algorithmic changes. My zone of genius is problem solving in terms of figuring out how to get marketing campaigns done easier, faster and on a low budget. This is one of the reasons I am launching a group program to help solopreneurs to get more visibility for their business. Compared to other courses out there this program is unique in that it offers a key element of a 6-hour, one-one workshop for each participant. It means that I will sit with you and together we will develop a 90-day plan for your business as well as the tools and systems to get it implemented. No more worrying about the changes in the algorithm because you will be advised to use 2-3 platforms to avoid a single point of failure. What to Look for in an Instagram Scheduler Based on my experience of using Instagram scheduling tools there are few things that I believe are super important. The obvious first feature should be a visual grid especially if your business is in the creative niche. Yes, there are some big name businesses like Marie Forleo and Mar...

I had really wanted to chat with Jen in-person. And we had hoped to do so when she was scheduled to be in Seattle on a book tour in June. But that all went sideways when travel (and pretty much everything else) was grounded. So we decided to chat remotely instead. And I’m so glad we did. You might know Jen as a pioneer in the self-care world. She’s a best-selling author and teacher of workshops, helping people lead a meaningful life through wellness, creativity and mindfulness practices. She has a new book out called Why Bother: Discover the Desire for What’s Next. There’s a couple of things I want to point out about this book and our conversation. At first glance, you might read the title, Why Bother, and think that it could be a bit depressing. Because we often associate sadness or depression with that phrase. But Jen turns that phrase around and helps you get to the root of why you SHOULD bother. And I love that about this book. The other thing that I’ll point out, and I do gush about it in the episode but it’s worth mentioning here…I don’t think there could have been a better time for this book to get published. Because we are ALL looking for meaning, for purpose, for the reasons why we should bother. Jen’s book gives us the road map to figure out why we should bother. She touches upon the main points of her book in this episode but, of course, I’d suggest picking up a copy of the book for lots of details and inspiration. Please enjoy this conversation with Jennifer Louden. ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? Today’s guest is Jennifer Louden, author of the new book Why Bother: Discover the Desire for What’s Next. She joins Charlie today to talk about how we can find the spark to engage with and create what’s next for us. If desire is a word you’re uncomfortable with, today’s episode is for you! Key Takeaways:[2:15] - Jen talks about her publishing journey, and what aspects of the book make “Why Bother?” her best work yet. This book came from a very different place than her previous work.[6:05] - One of the major conversations in this book is around desire. It can be a hard word for us, but we all ask the question we think we know the answer to - what are we bothering about? We don’t always have the desire to make a change in regards to a job, relationship, or health.[9:40] - Sometimes we aren’t saturated with the life or desire to make a decision in the first place. It’s not always a lack of desire for a specific thing, but a general lack of internal desire that prevents change from happening.[12:45] - Charlie and Jen talk about our complacency during difficult times, like a worldwide pandemic, and how it’s almost more important to give ourselves permission to “get our bother on” even during these times. They talk about some of the struggles creatives may be facing, and ways they can pivot to keep creating.[17:20] - We have to move our energy and let desire flow through our bodies. If you are having trouble focusing, try quick and short projects rather than some of your more involved projects.[18:50] - In the book, Jen talks about the two ways we grapple with the question “why bother?” The first is asking like we already know the answer. The other side of the question is genuinely getting curious so you can move forward.[23:25] - Jen has done some grappling of her own around the release of her book during this pandemic, and reflects on how it can feel when you put something out that’s a huge part of you, and the conditions of the environment aren’t right. She shares some ideas that have brought her comfort. [29:40] - In the book, Jen shares her model of six different steps to help people take the first step to finding their desire. The first is to leave behind - what are you still holding on to? The second is to ease in - claim your agency again.[33:30] - The third step is to settle down. We recognize that there can be desire, ambivalence, and difficulties side by side. It’s important to keep things in perspective here, and focus on the small things that accumulate from desire, to wonder, to thriving. The fourth step is desire. [37:07] - The fifth step is become by doing. The sixth step, being seen, is the one that is most difficult for Jen. She talks about struggling with letting herself be seen, through her books, with her close circle of friends. [40:15] - We also need to be aware of behaviors that might be enabling our “not bothered” state. Once behaviors are identified, we can also create pivot points to get ourselves out. Having accountability partners in our communities can also be helpful to call us out.[45:15] - Jen talks about the idea of always beginning again. When we fall off the horse, we can always get back on.[47:55] - The invitation for listeners is to discover how you can be companioned - so you know you’re not broken, and can dig deeper into what it is that you really desire. Find ways to open yourself and companion yourself so that life can flow again.Mentioned in This Episode:Productive FlourishingStart Finishing, by Charlie GilkeyJennifer LoudenWhy Bother?, by Jennifer LoudenThe Productive Flourishing Podcast Episode 67: How to Avoid Creative Burnout with Jennifer Louden
