On this episode of BMU, the guys offer their critiques of capitalism's effect on the Juneteenth holiday before diving into a nuanced conversation about the Caitlin Clark discourse. The conversation begins with harsh critique of some of the foremost male voices in sports media and their lack of understanding and study regarding the complex dynamics associated with Clark's meteoric rise. The guys discuss those dynamics, offering pathways for us to legitimately regard Clark's talent and stardom without succumbing to the racist, misogynoir, anti-LGBTQIA, and capitalist ways of thinking that would require us to tear down other players within the majority-Black and distinctly queer-identifying WNBA in the process. The guys also announce the inaugural BMU Summer Book Club in which we're reading All About Love: New Visions by bell hooks (1999) and The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin (1963). The first and second halves of All About Love will be discussed on our July 4th and 18th episodes, respectively. The Fire Next Time will be discussed in the same two-part fashion on episodes released on August 1st and 15th.   Today's episode references Forty Million Dollar Slaves by William C. Rhoden (2007).

A Pile Of Hot Steaming Horse Manure Today's topics include: That's what John is starting off with tonight...and this 'manure' he is referring to has to do with sports. A really good writer and columnist - who has been writing about sports for over 40 years - wrote a piece for 'The Undefeated' that John totally disagrees with. His name is William C. Rhoden, and he basically claims in his article that black quarterbacks are filling the void in what used to be a white dominated football position. Rhoden then plays the race angle, saying many white people all over are upset with this and want to keep quarterbacks white...John completely disagrees. Next, Erielle Davidson (staff writer at The Federalist) joins the show to talk to John about 'dude walls' and how universities are taking down framed pictures, documents, trophies, etc. along the halls of esteemed and distinguished male scientists, athletes, professors...all in the name of 'equality'. This week at In The Past Lane, the history podcast, we look at the complicated history of black athletes in US history. I’ll speak with historian Louis Moore, author of two new books on African American athletes, I Fight for a Living: Boxing and the Battle for Black Manhood, 1880-1915 (University of Illinois Press), and We Will Win The Day: The Civil Rights Movement, The Black Athlete, And The Quest For Equality (Praeger). In the first half of our conversation, we discuss the emergence of black boxers in the late nineteenth century. These men overcame poverty and racism to compete in the ring with fellow African Americans, but also white Americans. For black boxers, success in the ring earned them financial success and the opportunity to engage in a vibrant “sporting” culture. Their success also symbolized the African American quest for respect and equal rights. The most famous of these men was Jack Johnson who became heavy weight champion in 1908. His success, and his flashy lifestyle, in an a when Jim Crow was being imposed across the nation infuriated many white Americans. When no white boxer could defeat Johnson in the ring, federal authorities used the legal system to end his career. In the second half of our chat, Louis Moore walks us through the long history of African American athletes and the Civil Rights movement. He talks about the well-known incidents like John Carlos and Tommy Smith raising their fists in the Black Power salute at the 1968 Olympics, as well as many protests by people lost to history. Suffice it to say that Colin Kaepernick’s decision to kneel during the National Anthem is part of a long tradition of black athletes and protest. Among the many things discussed in this episode:  The emergence of African American boxers in the 19th century. How middle-class African Americans initially opposed black boxers but gradually came to embrace them as symbols of achievement. Why interracial boxing matches in the early 20th century, in large measure due to the dominance of black boxers over white opponents, were outlawed. How African American athletes were purged from many sports in the Jim Crow era. The rise and fall of the great African American boxer, Jack Johnson. Why riots broke out across the US when African American boxer Jack Johnson defeated Jim Jeffries in 1910. The long tradition of African American athletes using sports and protest to further Civil Rights. How protests and boycotts by the black community in cities like Washington, DC and New Orleans forced NFL franchises to bring on black players. How the NFL required cities like Atlanta, Houston, and New Orleans to desegregate before awarding them a football franchise. Where Colin Kaepernick fits into the history of protest by African American athletes. In episode thirteen we gather together three old friends from the San Francisco comedy scene, Sammy Obeid, Casey Ley, and Kevin Camia, and they recommend three very different but equally fascinating books. We start with a book Kevin Camia enjoyed so much he almost finished it, the controversial nonfiction best seller 40 Million Dollar Slaves by William C. Rhoden. This 2007 book combines a potent history of black athletes in professional athletics, with provocative theories about the modern professional sports industry. Next, Casey Ley brings us the brand new history book from Scott Anderson, Lawrence In Arabia, which sheds new light on the incredible real life of T.E. Lawrence, set amidst the historic backdrop of WWI. This book is a perfect compliment to last episode’s The Peace To End All Peace, treading the same historic ground but seen from a completely different perspective, and packed with tantalizing new information about what we thought was an old story. Finally, Sammy Obeid tells us about his experience reading John Steinbeck’s last novel The Winter of Our Discontent in high school, as well as some things he enjoyed more, such as Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park, and some things he enjoys less, such as math in movies. It all adds up to a really fun show! (See what I did there?)
