Darren and Steve talk about how things are quiet with David Lee Roth...the various Van Halen reunion stories and what, if anything, is believable... Alex Van Halen runs the show? How deep does that rabbithole go? This episode, Darren has a great interview with singer Durga McBroom! Durga also appears in Dave's first 3 videos: "California Girls," "Yankee Rose" and "Just A Gigolo." She spoke about how she ended up doing that; why despite being an amazing vocalist she never sang on a DLR record, the perfect woman for Dave, a big mystery solved about the "Yankee Rose" video, Pete Angelus, "...not if you were the last immigrant grocer on earth, honey," some really strange stuff with little people, and much more. Durga McBroom has performed with Pink Floyd, David Gilmour, Billy Idol, acted in multiple movies, was a founder of the band Blue Pearl, and regularly performs as half of the McBroom Sisters, with her sister Lorelei McBroom.
The team look at some of the other songs in the charts the week of August 18, 1986: Dave Lee Roth's Yankee Rose, Bruce Hornsby & The Range smash The Way It Is and the neo-prog-pop of It Bites' Calling All The Heroes.
We're talking about the Yankee Rose himself, it's Diamond David Lee Roth! As we are celebrating our Diamond Jubilee Episode it only seemed right to talk about the myth, the man, the legend El Roth. Being born in Indiana, USA, Dave was miles away from his dreams and his future on the West Coast. As a child, Dave would entertain his family by singing along with the radio and dancing like the stars he'd seen at his uncle's club, the Cafe Wha in Greenwich Village, where Dave spent his summers. In his teens he and his family moved to Pasadena, California, home of the Van Halen brothers. It wasn't too long before their paths crossed and eventually one of the world's greatest rock bands would come together. After an amazing run with the Van Halen brothers, Dave decided to give a solo career a go! After several failed attempts to rejoin Van Halen, Dave actually got his wish and rejoin the super group as lead singer. We talk about some stories from his years on the road, the reason no brown M&Ms were allowed backstage and the best place in NYC to buy Jamaican Bunk reefer. He's been a puppet, pirate, a poet, a pauper, a pawn and a king, it's the King of Crotch & Roll, David Lee "El Roth" Roth!Leave an Anonymous SpeakPipe Voice Msg: www.crimeinmusic.comTweet Us: www.twitter.com/crimeinmusicIG: www.instagram.com/crimeinusicFaceBook: www.facebook.com/crimeinmusicProud member of the Pantheon Podcasts Network

One down 3 to go, Episode 17 of Season 3 aired at 7 pm on 10 Dec 2020. It was another technically flawless affair with zero Wi-Fi hassles or presenter bungles. We kicked off with Dave Lee Roth's uplifting ‘Yankee Rose', the perfect song to get the energy levels up, and followed with a band called Dirty Honey out of L.A. For the rest, it's pretty standard TSORR fare. A bit of Punk with The Stranglers and The Sex Pistols, Scorpions & Devil's Train out of Germany, ACDC and Jimmy Barnes out of Australia, Rainbow, Deep Purple, Sabbath, Priest, and Maiden out of the UK and everyone else out of the USA. South Africa got a bit short-changed for some reason Dan Patlansky was the only representative, I'll fix that next week. I thoroughly enjoyed Gov't Mule's cover of Pink Floyd's ‘Time', his version of Dave Gilmore's solo is perfection. Asking Alexandria's ‘Not the American Average' was brutal, in a good way, and there was a nice little link with Metallica, Volbeat, and Avenged Sevenfold one after the other. The point was made that those 3 bands toured a lot together in 2019 and would have continued if the Covid thing hadn't happened. Artists featured: Dave Lee Roth, Dirty Honey, Guns ‘n' Roses, Devil's Train, The Temperance Movement, Skid Row, Buckcherry, Accept, ACDC, The Raven Age, the Stranglers, The Sex Pistols, Deep Purple, Rainbow, Jimmy Barnes, Joe Bonamassa, Dan Patlansky, Gov't Mule, Asking Alexandria, Metallica, Volbeat, Avenged Sevenfold, Scorpions, Twisted Sister, Oasis, Wilko Johnson & Roger Daltrey, Zakk Wylde, Alice in Chains, Linkin Park, Pearl Album, Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, System of a Down & Little Steven
Oh, You Ate One Too?What is The New Dad Rock? What is Dad Rock? No matter how you define it, dads (and practically everyone else) love Van Halen. Their songs get the party started and it's almost impossible not to smile when listening to their music. Especially the David Lee Roth era. This week, Keith and Steve are joined by a special guest to discuss Van Halen's place in The New Dad Rock pantheon and whether Sammy Hagar measures up to Diamond Dave. You're not going to want to miss this one.If you're taking whiskey to the party tonight and looking for somebody to squeeze, don't get uptight just listen to these:"I'm the One" and "Little Dreamer" from Van Halen"Dance the Night Away" and "Beautiful Girls" from Van Halen II "Fools," "Romeo Delight" and "Could This Be Magic" from Women and Children First"Mean Street," "Push Comes to Shove" and "Sunday Afternoon in the Park" from Fair Warning "Your Love is Driving Me Crazy" from Three Lock Box (Sammy Hagar)"Hang 'em High" and "Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now)" from Diver Down"1984" and "Girl Gone Bad" from 1984"I Can't Drive 55" from V.O.A. When you think of college alternative rock of the 80's, the group you are most likely to have in your head is The Smiths. Their third studio album, “The Queen Is Dead,” continues their brand of Manchester Brit-pop, decidedly pessimistic, but with accessible muscial hooks. The Smiths’ sound is largely due to the collaboration between front man Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr - sophisticated, critical, and downright depressing. Still this influential group has had a staying power beyond their contemporaries. Tim Andrews brings us this complex and bleak album as he guest-hosts this week's episode. The Queen Is Dead This anti-royalty track criticizes the royal family and the continual media frenzy around them. Morrissey considered royalty to be "a hideous joke." Frankly, Mr. Shankly This track describes a letter written by an unhappy worker to his tyrannical boss. I Know It's Over This emotional ballad depicts a man at the end of a bleak life. "I know it's over - still I cling, I don't know where else I can go." There Is a Light That Never Goes Out This is a better known track from the album. The music sounds upbeat until you catch the lyrics: "And if a double-decker bus crashes into us, to die by your side is such a heavenly way to die." STAFF PICKS: Billy Joel - Big Man on Mulberry Street Bruce's staff pick highlights a jazzy deep cut from Joel's album "The Bridge." This song made an appearance as the music behind a dream sequence from the TV show "Moonlighting." Van Halen - Dreams This synthesizer-heavy hit from the Sammy Hagar era of Van Halen is off "5150," the first Van Halen album with Hagar as frontman. Rob loves the irony that “ 5150” is the California Welfare and Institutions code for an insane person. GTR - When the Heart Rules the Mind Brian brings this supergroup featuring Yes guitarist Steve Howe and Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett. GTR only had this single album, and this track was their biggest hit. David Lee Roth - Yankee Rose Wayne reminds us that both Van Halen and David Lee Roth had hits at this time. Steve Vai was Roth's guitarist on this song. Although you might think this was another song about girls, this song is actually about the Statue of Liberty on which refurbishment was completed at the time. The Fixx - Secret Separation Tim's staff pick features the UK band famous for their earlier album "Reach the Beach." This later hit has great harmonies INSTRUMENTAL TRACK: REM - The White Tornado This instrumental off the collection album "Dead Letter Office" closes out our podcast for the week.
“That’s why we’ll always love you, Yankee Rose.”
Today on The River Turntable: David Lee Roth's "Yankee Rose" off of Eat 'Em and Smile.
