This episode of Over the Edge features an interview between Matt Trifiro and Mat Yarger, co-founder of DigitalMRV. At Digital MRV, Mat develops strategy and solutions around the use of data for environmental and energy systems, including smart cities and critical infrastructure. In this episode, Mat describes how data can help us overcome climate change, what systems need updating, and the future we can work towards together.---------Key Quotes“With data, there are just so many different things you can do. It applies to every sector as we're transitioning into digitization and automation. We see the huge uptick of AI right now and everything around that. But data security and trust in data is really paramount to building the right systems moving forward.”“One area that was the most open to [new tech] because there is a high, high need for transparency right now, is climate. What I'm doing is still very tied to everything I've done in the past: like cybersecurity, protecting the data, compartmentalizing it, enabling trust in the data, those kinds of things. But the space that is the most ready to scale that out is climate and environmental impact.”“The big problems are how we can take that analog process, and look at the standards that are out there. Let's digitize all those different standards, or pick the ones that have the most impact and progressively digitize them. How do we implement them into the facilities that are getting built or ready to transition and earn these carbon credits or new incentive models?”“I'm sure you're familiar with the cyberpunk future of how things can go and Blade Runner and all that kind of stuff. But I think if we do this right, we've got this really cool solar punk future where it's super high tech, super futuristic, we've got trees growing on all of our buildings and we're sharing data, and I'm giving you energy from the energy that I'm creating from my solar panels, and it's just a really fluid utopian society like I know that's super optimistic and positive, but I think if we do it right and we get the right people involved and we don't step on the common person and their data, then it's achievable.”---------Show Timestamps:02:18 Mat's journey into tech05:27 How Mat got into his field07:46 How tech ties into climate09:45 The problems Mat's trying to solve12:57 What is the carbon market?13:54 Circular emission tracking14:52 Why data is useful18:38 About Project Iota24:48 About Project Alvarium29:06 How Mat's business was formed35:17 What Mat sees for the future37:30 The climate we're striving for--------Sponsor:Over the Edge is brought to you by Dell Technologies to unlock the potential of your infrastructure with edge solutions. People have million-dollar ideas every day. If you don't have the experience, or networking, or the know-how to get it started and up off the ground or maybe even motivation. There are so many times that people have these million-dollar ideas that, I think, it's really valuable to write those down. Then maybe nine months later when your friend texts you and says: hey there are desks for sale or whatever it might be, you can get those off the ground and get running. I think there is a lot of value in not forgetting what some of your ideas are when you are motivated and inspired. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-inventive-journey/message

Popularized in sci-fi movies like the Terminator, the Matrix and others is the concept of a “machine-age”, or what Matthew Yarger and others refer to as “the machine economy.” We’ve seen this debate in regard to ethical AI, or "fairness in algorithms,” but a new frontier is appearing in regard to centralization, walled gardens and networks with “a single point of failure.” In a centralized system, there are fears automation could allow “Skynet” scenario - machines making decisions so complex, that meaningful human control is no longer necessary or perhaps even possible. In a DLT, or decentralized ledger system, information is no longer owned by a single platform. A malicious AI or non-state actor has no central location to hack - at least in theory, the attack surface is reduced from billions, right down to 1. Automation & DLT technologies are changing philosophy and ideation in the cyber-security sector. But are decentralized systems really the future? Will these systems be permissioned or permissionless? And can Decentralized Ledger Technology allow automated systems to scale into our economies and personal lives, without compromising our safety, privacy and security? Today we’re talking with Mathew Yarger, Head of Mobility and Automotive at the IOTA Foundation, on the machine economy, and cybersecurity

For 16 years, Lenore Yarger and Steve Woolford have answered the phone at the G.I. Rights hotline, a number military service members can call for free and confidential counseling on benefits, regulations, discharges, grievances, and what it means to be a conscientious objector. The hotline is sponsored in part by Fayetteville's Quaker House, which has been advocating for peace since 1969. Yarger said she and her husband came to the hotline as peace activists, initially knowing little about military life. "We knew of soldiers on the other side of the fence, during protests or different demonstrations we had been a part of," said Yarger. "So this work just gave us an incredible opportunity to actually get to know soldiers and what they go through, to hear their stories and to have a personal relationship with them. On that level this work has been extremely rewarding." Along with other hotline workers, the couple fields calls from all over the world. Some come from service members who have had a change of heart and find themselves morally opposed to war. Yarger and Woolford coach them through the lengthy process of gaining an honorable discharge from the military. "We don't always win," said Woolford. "And that's hard in cases where I think we're completely right, so sometimes it does feel just heartbreaking." The most fulfilling part of their work, he said, is helping soldiers find their voice. "A lot of people think they're stuck in a situation and just don't realize the options they have."
Masterpiece Cakeshop v Colorado Civil Rights Commission is one of the most high-profile cases before the Supreme Court this term. We interviewed Colorado Solicitor General Fred Yarger, who represented Colorado during oral argument. The first part of the interview focuses on Masterpiece itself. In 2012, a gay couple asked a Colorado baker named Jack Phillips to make them a customized wedding cake. Phillips refused on the grounds that baking the cake would violate his religious objections to gay marriage, and the couple filed a complaint with the Colorado Civil Rights Commission. The Commission determined that Phillips had violated a provision of the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act, which prohibits places of public accommodation from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation. The main question presented in Masterpiece is whether compelling Phillips to bake a cake under Colorado’s Anti-Discrimination Act violates the Free Speech or Free Exercise Clauses of the First Amendment. Oral arguments were held before the Supreme Court on December 5, 2017 and Court observers expect a decision in June. The second part of the interview focuses on Mr. Yarger’s work in the Solicitor General’s office and his career after law school. This episode of Briefly, a production of the University of Chicago Law Review, was produced by Kathryn Running, Eric Petry, Tom Molloy and John Tienken. Music from www.bensound.com. Special thanks to the entire online team, including Grace Bridwell, Tom Garvey, and Noel Ottman, and our Editor in Chief Pat Ward and Executive Editor Kyle Jorstad. Thanks for listening!

And, is the temporary ban a fascist act by our President, or is it necessary to protect innocent Americans? Is the riot we’ve seen in Berkeley just an innocent protests that just accidentally turned into violent uprising…or is there a shadow movement behind the hostility that has finally come out of the darkness? And is the temporary ban that the President put in place…bigoted OR is tit the most common sense order by a President in years, to keep us safe? In the words of Benjamin Franklin, "If we do not hang together, we shall surely hang separately." Come hang with us...
