A podcast about belief, un-belief and everything in between. Hosts Scott Trout (a Christian from America) and Joey Vervaart (an Agnostic from the Netherlands) come from two different worlds, yet they believe in the power of conversations. Here they seek to give space for people to share their stories of faith (or lack thereof) and how those beliefs are lived out. They are hoping that through the back and forth of differing ideas, better ideas can emerge, promoting greater dialogue between those who believe in God and those who don't. 50. The Self-Conscious Seed: Scott Trout Sermon on Acting and the Need to Surrender

Scott Trout's story of acting, fame, and trying to be the life of the party all the while still trying to be a Christian and "measure up" spiritually. This led to a constant battle of trying to please those around him and getting lost in who he actually wanted to be. What Scott needed was to realize he is just a seed not an autonomous human being, and he needed to submit to the process of "being gardened." "The seed needs to die to two things: living for its own fruit and trying to grow on its own strength"--Scott Trout Key Texts: "Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit." John 12:24 "I am the vine, you are the branches.... apart from me you can do nothing" John 15:5 Scott was the speaker at the Navigator Emerging Leaders Conference in the UK in February 2024. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/betweentwoworldspodcast/message

Dutch People Don't Talk about Their Spiritual Beliefs, But It's Starting to Change. Is the Universe Governed by an Impartial Force Called Love or the God of Christianity? Luuk Elkhuizen is Dutch, the youngest boy in a family of four boys from the Friesland area of the Netherlands, and an atheist from a family that has been atheistic for three generations. He joins Scott to talk about how religion was never on his mind growing up... until now. Dutch society in many ways is so far post Christian that many young people are starting to get curious about what Christianity is all about. But they find it hard to find someone who actually believes. Luuk, to his knowledge, can only remember one guy growing up who genuinely believed and tried to defend his beliefs to his largely atheistic friend group. Now Luuk has started to read the Bible with Scott and is coming up with his own opinion about who Jesus was and what the Bible is all about. For people of faith, how would you articulate what it means to live by love? For agnostics and atheists, do you think there is a new feedback loop happening in society with so many not being religious? Also discussed is the difference between how the Bible describes justice and how Western society describes justice. Welcome to another Trout Family Christmas Special! This time written by Scott Trout. "Santa is in a deep depression. The pandemic has thrown a huge wrench in his supply chain, his elves are on strike, and he isn't sure he wants to do Christmas anymore. Then came Peter, a small boy who still believed in Santa and what Christmas was all about..." This is an audio production of "Bringing Back Santa: A Christmas Comeback Story" written and produced by Scott Trout. My family and I used to make these Christmas recordings when we were little. My mom would pick a Christmas story for us to read and then assign us different parts in the story, whether it was playing the piano, repeating lines after she said them, or just wishing people Merry Christmas at the end. For us as a family, this tradition helped us remember that Christmas is not just about us getting presents, but it's about Jesus's birth and giving to others like he gave to us. My parents would send these recordings on cassette tapes to friends and family all over the US every year. As we got older, we stopped doing the recordings, so I thought it was about time we brought it back. For this year's edition: See if you can find Naomi's contribution... My little brother, Ben, never got to be in one of these growing up so he is a star role this time around. And a huge congrats to my little cousin, Peter, for his breakout role in the performing arts. Being the lead in one of these Christmas productions set me up to be an actor for life. I hope the same happens to you Peter. I hope this story reminds you of the meaning behind Christmas and how this can be a time to serve others not just receive presents. We want to explore why someone believes what they belief and what that says about who they are. One of the biggest issues contributing to the polarization of society is the lack of knowledge of what the other side has to say. Without this knowledge you can easily believe a straw man stereotype about the other and thus disregard them. We are trying to change that. He has a Spanish mom and a Dutch dad with six siblings. He grew up in a Calvinist primary school in the Bible Belt of the Netherlands, then Catholic high school in the southern tip of Spain, in a town where spaghetti westerns were filmed, then back to the Netherlands for his university days. He operates often in between the two Catholic and Protestant worlds. This gives Paul a unique ability to articulate Catholic doctrine in ways that Protestants can relate to. Welcome to a Trout Family Christmas Special! This is an audio production of "If You Are Missing Baby Jesus" by Jean Gietzen. My family and I used to make these Christmas recordings when we were little. My mom would pick a Christmas story for us to read and then assign us different parts in the story, whether it was playing the piano, repeating lines after she said them, or just wishing people Merry Christmas at the end. For us as a family, this tradition helped us remember that Christmas is not just about us getting presents, but it's about Jesus's birth. My parents would send these recordings on cassette tapes to friends and family all over the US every year. As we got older, we stopped doing the recordings, so I thought it was about time we brought it back. You are in for a treat. The whole Trout family got together to sing a song at the end, My mom shares how this whole tradition started and what it meant to us as a family, Briana and I teamed up with my cousin, Patricia, and her family here in the Netherlands for the speaking roles. I hope this story reminds you of the meaning behind Christmas and how this can be a time to serve others not just receive presents. He also wants to know fully what it is he believes not just the morals he is told to obey. This lead him to look into his faith and ultimately start to question it. Not all at once but gradually overtime the gaps in the narrative and the desire to look into all religions, not just Christianity, lead him to decide he did not prescribe to any religion. Yet he finds himself still drawn to religious ideologies. He is always curious why people believe what they believe and how they came to that conclusion. Specifically he confronts Scott with the idea of "proportionality bias," which is the process by which someone experiences and extraordinary circumstances and thus concludes there must be an extraordinary explanation. The book is confronting as you see a conservative Christian overtaking of America and the regressive government they put in place often using Biblical ideas to back up their policies. Why did Casey join the Orthodox faith? Does he condone polyamory? All this and more on Casey's feedback episode from the earlier episode entitled "Out of the Ashes of Protestantism." Casey seeks to make people think and defend their conclusions. He is simply sharing the things that made him uncomfortable in his spiritual journey and how that pushed him to find new answers. If his thoughts tend to provoke, he encourages the pushback. Listener's Pushback: Orthodox Christians don't think for themselves. They look to the interpretation of the church. What place does personal faith have in Orthodoxy? Often young believers in an orthodox faith know the church traditions, know the history, but can't articulate what the gospel is. What is Casey's definition of sin? Things in Orthodoxy that Casey doesn't like? Praying to saints? Deification of Mary? Casey's reasons for joining orthodoxy: Credibility- How do I figure out which interpretations of the Bible are true? Orthodoxy has legitimacy that Protestant churches can't claim because they can trace their pastoral lineage back to people who knew Jesus himself. Finding Answers to Hard Questions- Casey described the frustration of going to people he is supposed to trust for his spiritual questions and finding multiple different interpretations. He says the Protestant world doesn't have a way to determine beliefs as heresy, whereas Orthodoxy does. The Church- Need to have a personal relationship with Christ AND a personal relationship with the Church his body. To provide you with all the things you need for your experience of life with Christ. Namely the sacraments. The Sacraments- Protestant church, didn't provide confession in a way that Casey thought was meaningful. As well as the structure around Communion, Fasting as a Church on the Church calendar, and structure for worship. Pray- The Protestant mind links prayer to worship. But Casey believes prayer is just talking to God. So you can "talk" to the saints as well and ask them for wisdom or guidance in the areas where that saint was saintly. Orthodoxy doesn't see a separation between the living and the dead. We are all in this together and helping each other run the race of life. Other Topics: God's Law vs Natural Law- Things that make you flourish in the natural world. Certain sexual desires might be fine in the natural law category, but God's law decrees against to know that we are obeying him. Such as circumcision. (Christians often want a neat natural reason for God's laws). Polyamory- Does Casey condone polyamory? God's Design For Sexual Desires- the functional and symbolic role of marriage. How every man has polyamorous tendencies. Just cause you have desires doesn't mean you get to indulge them. It is important to find your deeper yes to combat the natural desires in you. Scott's Brother Casey Trout is back after listeners sent in all sorts of feedback. In this episode Scott and Casey revisit his argument that equality under the law for race, sex, and class is a Christian miracle. Casey comes with a host of research and some quotes of the major movers in the cause for equality, and Scott uses the feedback he had received to pushback. If you haven't had a chance to listen to the original episode, here it is: Equality Under the Law is a Christian Miracle: Casey Part 1 Other Topics Discussed: The beauty of being able to pushback and not be afraid of losing the relationship. The importance of furthering the discussion by following up and not just sitting on our assumptions of the other's perspective. Pushback on Casey's argument that Equality Under the Law is a Christian Miracle (*see previous episode). Casey's argument is an oversimplification. What is a "Christian nation?" Significant progress toward equality came as nations became more secular and as the shell of Christianity fell away. Christianity had a dampening effect on the march toward progress. The scale of Christianity is weighted toward Christians who used their religion for political power and oppression. Equality under the law is a multi-faceted progress, of which Christianity is only one factor. It is one only thread in the tapestry that contributed. You might be able to show correlation between Christianity and progress, but not causation. Casey's Responses: Produce a culture that has produced equality in race, sex, and class that is not Christian or has Christian roots. Look at the cultural centers of the other religions. Where would you rather be a woman: India, Saudi Arabia, or in The Netherlands. Where do we see the greatest levels equality in the world? Overwhelmingly in nations that were seeped in Christianity. The prime movers in the causes of equality were always Christians. You have to tear down the evidence that these thinkers were inspired by Christianity, and what actually did move the stone toward equality. All the human institutions in history have blocked the progress of equality. Christian institutions are no different. That just proves that humans are hypocritical. It is only Christians who have done something different than human nature. It was the Christian God who inspired them. How would you explain why human nature changed all of a sudden from an alien anthropologists perspective. At the same time, he wrestles with the tension of how the Bible describes a gendered world and outlines roles for men and women. This was not an easy conversation; mainly, because of the discomfort with a post modern narrative that a "straight, white, male" like Scott should not have any say in what women can or cannot do. So what is God's design for men and women? Can God be trusted if he has different roles for them in the church and in relationships? Or is this all one big rouse from the patriarchy? Topics Discussed: The barriers, outright and subconscious, that have existed toward women in leadership in Christianity, and how the Bible doesn't make this super easy for our 21st century ears. Egalitarianism and Complementarianism (the two major schools of thought concerning gender roles in Christianity). The observation that God made a "gendered" world in Genesis. Living in that tension and trying to figure out why God did what He did. How "straight white males" always ruin a good story. And how it's easy to bristle at the word submission. Yet Hadeel shares how it is easier to submit to a man who is submitted to Christ. How Christianity is all about submission. The wife is responsible to how she reacts to her husband, and the husband is responsible for how he gives his life for his family. When that mutual submission is there, the marriage flourishes. How do we atone for the sins of the past and still live in confidence in the present. Be conscious of peoples' triggers, while still holding to truth. And Hadeel's Last Words: For Christians: Get comfortable being uncomfortable. Lets talk about these things. Stay curious when you have a "don't want to talk about that" reaction. Lovingly call each other out. And trust that the Holy Spirit will guide you. For Non Christians: Engage with your Christian friends. Is your job to make us uncomfortable and get us out of our bubble. *We should note that the term sex vs gender are used interchangeably in the episode although they don't necessary have the same weight or meaning for some. We are by no means experts on these topics. Just two Christians trying to figure things out.* Questions for the Community: What is your reaction to the idea of submission? Why do you think God made a gendered world? How could the church better empower minority voices within its ranks? Race, Narratives, and Pushing Through the Discomfort: Hadeel Part Two

Hadeel is back with Scott to discuss race and the narratives we live with without even knowing it. Her faith in the Christian God pushes her to engage in the hard conversations and confront the biases she might have. She also calls out the Christian Church to acknowledge its past and be a part of the process of racial reconciliation. Topics Discussed: "Professional hair" and how it has racial undertones Preferences in attraction and when is it ok. Stereotypes in advertisement. And the narratives we have about other races. Zwarte Pete in Dutch society. Pilgrims and Native Americans in American society. What is innocent and what is condoning in the traditions we do with our kids. How we to take care of old wounds. And we need to realize how we have benefitted from the actions of the past. Respecting the full color palate of God's Kingdom and valuing the worth of each individual. Hearing out other perspectives while avoiding tokenization. Questions for the Community: How do we acknowledge the wrongs of the past without levying a too heavy burden on those who benefit from the past but did not create it? How will we know if progress is being made toward racial reconciliation? Do you have an implicit racial bias in who you listen to or surround yourself with? Arab American Christian: Hadeel on Being a Third Culture Kid

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 2, 2021 55:59

Change Management Specialist for an international company, Third Culture Kid, and American in Amsterdam, Hadeel McCall shares about how she can relate to being between two worlds on multiple fronts. Her dad was an American missionary serving in Jordan, and her mom is one of the .1% of Jordanians who are Palestinian Evangelical Christians, so she grew up half Arab in a post 9/11 America. This sensibility has helped her relate to others who lived in that tension too. Who find themselves not fully belonging wherever they live. But she has an answer to that homeless feeling. Other Topics Discussed: Scott and Hadeel talk about how they first met each other, including an intense mayor face off in the game Werewolf and standing and pointing at each other at their church in Amsterdam What it was like to grow up Arab American including the different parenting styles of her parents' cultures. She talks about how they had an arranged marriage and that Christmas was often like my big fat Greek wedding meets sarcastic small town Pacific Northwest family. The different ways we can feel like an outsider in our own culture. The "flying the coup moment" for Hadeel with an Arab mother. The fear her mom had of Hadeel moving to Amsterdam and not having a "male covering" to protect her. And how Hadeel argued that if we believe that Jesus is good, he can also be that covering for us. The white water outdoor summer camp that broke Hadeel and made her take more ownership of her faith in God and ultimately addressed her longing to belong. The frustration of being a woman in Christianity and wondering why the Bible only addresses men. Wondering if she is valued in Christian culture if she is not married. And the danger of putting her faith in her career and trying to never be dependent on others. The positive side of Covid in that it forced us to slow down, not make so many plans, and actualy deepen your connections with the people and place where you live Response vs Reacting: being intentional about taking our first raw thoughts to God and a trusted few. Being a non-anxious presence in an anxious world. Questions for the Community: Will we carry the resting rhythms and deep connections post Covid? How do you experience the difference between responding and reacting in life? How do you address that feeling of not fully belonging? Can You Trust Your Magnets? Saudamini Tambay on Avoiding Marriage, Finding Meaning, and Girl Problems

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 19, 2021 38:02

Saudamini Tambay is back to talk about how religion can often impact our closest relationships. She opens up about her mom's history with Muslims growing up in Northern India and the bad blood that can create life-long notions of the "other." She is not alone in this, and Saudamini and Scott unpack how best to bring humanity back to those stereotypes. They also unpack what it is like to date someone of another religious background and the pressure to marry from traditional societies. Lastly, Scott lays out an image that describes the post-modern search for truth involving magnets: we often find meaning by the people we surround ourselves with, but how do we know that our magnets are trustworthy. Other Topics Discussed: Curveballs and improv games that Scott throws at people. Why the Trouts chose the name Naomi for their daughter. And the other names, Scott wanted to use. Saudamini's thought on the pressure Christians put on God, as opposed to taking responsibility for your own moral choices, and how Saudamini looks to her therapist, friends, and yoga for sense of grounded-ness not a god. Scott's thought on the danger of building your sense of self and truth from multiple sources (or magnets in this case) and how Christianity isn't just a narrative worth following. It's a relationship. Akin to Scott's relationship with his wife. Saudamini gives Scott advice on how to raise a girl, including an un-scary definition of feminism: simply treating men and women equally. Which is not what she experienced growing up in India outside her own family. And lastly, Scott tries to convince Saudamini why the wedding is actually important, by describing the inauguration of Joe Biden and the rides at Disney Land that you can't get off of without significant harm. His point is you need that public proclamation to herald a new relationship and those rides are actually more fulfilling because they are not easy to exit. Questions for the Community: -Who is in your circle of magnets? How do you know that they trustworthy? -If religion is the willingness to surrender to something greater than you, what do you surrender to? -How have you experienced different gender roles? And what advice would you give Scott for parenting his daughter?
