Educators, difference makers, in the city of Chula Vista, and San Diego at large. Comes with a side order of sports, politics, and sarcasm.
Jauhn Hinkle| Eastlake High School | Welcome Back!An extremely raw, yet lightly cut episode featuring photography teacher, Jauhn Hinkle. A veteran of over 20 plus years in SUHSD, Jauhn is a legend, known for speaking his truth unapologetically, and probably way too often. We discuss Hinkle's storied history in Sweetwater and how he attended school board meetings in a whole ass skunk suit. I cannot tell you how much we laughed during this episode, I don't think we've ever had a guest with as many colorful descriptors as Jauhn. You only know if you listen. What a fantastic way to open up season seven of the podcast and welcome in the '21-'22 school year.Socials:@sr.tejondemiel | @resist_edu | @czareff | @mr_ayyyy

Abel Macias@creatureteacher @culturayskate cultura-y-skate.comAbel Macias is a long-time friend from our days in undergrad at San Diego State University. We grew up in the same neighborhood of East San Diego (nice people call it "City Heights") but we wouldn't cross paths until the mid 90s at SDSU. We start by discussing his experience in education at Horace Mann Junior and Crawford High, and then how his path to being a professor was anything but linear. He currently teaches Chicano and Chicana Studies at San Diego City Community College and San Diego State University. We also also discuss his passion for skating and how that lead to him launching a skate brand, Cultura y Skate. Tune for a robust discussion on skateboards, gangs, higher education and indigenous struggle.Shoutout @resist_edu for the assist on sound, video and cohost duties.Shoutout @profile784 for the head-nodding intro and outro music. Episode 56 is timely and critical for our students, as we dive into the history and work that has shaped Ethnic Studies in California. Dr. Theresa Montaño and Dr. Guillermo Gomez have been putting in the work for an Ethnic Studies curriculum since 2007. We cover the basics of what Ethnic Studies is, what it should look like in our schools, and why our students have needed this curriculum for decades. The State Board of Education recently accepted a very "watered down" version of ES curriculum due to push back from some very powerful forces, and our guests do not shy away from discussing how this happened. Because the SBE has diluted and co-opted this hard work, Montaño and Gomez discuss ways that teachers and districts can move forward with a liberated Ethnic Studies curriculum. This is a critical listen for any educator or community member that would like to bring this curriculum to a local school district. Dr. Partida is a dear family friend and one of the most personable doctors in the game. When the world went on quarantine, we knew we had to get Carmen on the show. She asked that we wait a few months until we really had a grasp on just how menacing this virus could be. 9 months later, we got her to record. We get into her origin story, talk about what she has seen in the emergency rooms during the pandemic, and her work in other locales. Do we ask her about the safety of reopening schools and the vaccine? Of course we do. This was such an enlightening episode. The pride of Castle Park High, Dr. Carmen Partida.

Cristina is the Assemblywoman for Assembly District 58, which serves several cities in southeast Los Angeles. The Educated Guess reached out to Asm. Garcia because she is not only a fierce advocate for her constituents, but she’s also a former high school math teacher. Her calling to politics was simple. Elected officials from her hometown of Bell Gardens were corrupt. If there is one way to characterize Cristina Garcia, it’s that she does not take her office for granted. We decided to reach out to students from the Class of 2020 to get their experiences of learning and living during the COVID quarantine. This wasn’t our normal trash talking sort of episode, as we really just wanted the raw, real words from students about distance learning, lack of social events, and any successes or struggles they’ve had during this time. They gave advice to the upcoming Class of 2021, and some words of wisdom for teachers in regards to distance learning. Fam. We cannot say enough about Dr. Rob Ruvalcaba from San Diego City Community College. This man pedagogy is the epitome of Hip Hop Ed in practice. Dr. Rob brings math concepts to life through hip hop music and connects with students in a real way. He also brings students into the community space by inviting them to work on assignments while he spins records at venues, as Dj Professor Shadow. Here on the Educated Guess Podcast, we do ur best to interview educators far and near that refuse to accept the status quo of our craft. We present to you, Carlos Gonzalez of Los Angeles. Teacher, Assistant Principal, and now principal in South Los Angeles. His dedication to high expectations for students and staff has, no doubt, lead to his rise as an instructional leader in his district. I first met Carlos at the BOOST conference, where his strong, unapologetic stance on a quality education made an immediate impression on me. Also joining the podcast, is Diego Arancibia. Brother to Rodrigo, and the first of us to meet and work with Carlos. Diego would be the director of the Afterschool All Stars, an after school program, at a school where Carlos was the assistant principal. Both men are game changers in the realm of education, and I want you to hear their stories and perspectives for yourselves.Get at us on them twitters: @czareff @mr_ayyy @d_suli
Introduction by Adrian Arancibia. Shout out to Diego for the backround information that made this podcast POP! Mr. Gerardo Huidor discusses his struggles with school as a youth in the South Bay. He would go on to SDSU and nearly drop out, if not for a turning point. He would go onto get his Masters in Social Work at UCLA and work in that field for a couple of years. But education was his calling. He went from a middle school to teaching AP World History at a brand new high school in our district, which he has been doing now for almost 15 years. He is a master. And his pass rates prove it.
