To know the illustrious Tony Tee, real name Antonio Ley, is to love him. The Chula Vista-born-and-bred, man-about-town has appeared in popular shows, like Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations and Vice News, and he even had a brief career as a politico after he got his law degree in Tijuana. These days, the former party promoter is running a food truck parked in North Park at Fall Brewing. Called Corazon de Torta, it specializes in guisados, and is a local favorite. It's half of the reason we brought him on Happy Half Hour this week. The second reason? Ley recently started a tennis league in South Bay aimed at increasing Latino representation in the sport and we had the opportunity to feature his work in our February 2024 issue. Hardly an athletic guy until recently, Ley has come to love playing tennis and diving into a more athletic life. “I went into diabetic ketoacidosis one day, landed myself in the hospital, and realized I had to change my life,” he says. At the time, he was a new father who knew things needed to change, so he lost a ton of weight, quit boozing so much, and kick-started an athletic routine. He began playing tennis when he had an idea. “There was a void in the Latino tennis community,” Ley says. “[Latinos] are half of California, but, as far as I know, we have one guy, Emilio Nava, who is on the tour representing us. Pro tennis has serious Mexican and Mexican-American representation problems. It's an accessibility problem.” To help close the gap, Ley founded the hard-court club, called Club Raquetas, in 2022, intending to introduce more Latinos to the sport. He's the perfect spokesperson, mainly because it took him some time to get into tennis himself. Also, because he's got a big mouth and he's not afraid to use it. Longtime San Diegans might remember seeing a more heavyset, still boisterous Tee leading Bourdain around Tijuana in a pink limousine. They also might remember the professional Mexican basketball team he founded, called the Tijuana Zonkeys, which made Tee a convicted felon (long story). They also might have crossed paths with him during his 15 years as a club promoter south of the border. However you know him, whether it's tennis, tacos, or Tijuana, Tony Tee is a San Diego legend. In addition to catching up with Tony, we also talked the news: beleaguered brewery Eppig Brewing will open its newest location in downtown, next to Petco Park in the former Stone location; Roman Wolves opened in Little Italy from the Rusticucina folks; Common Theory will open in South Bay this month; Coop's BBQ is looking for some financial love; and Nat Diego just announced its summer dates (June 28 & 29). And if you're around this weekend, come join us for our Taste of South Bay event on Sunday, February 25. There will be birria, short rib ramen, guisados, Chamangos, drinks, entertainment and Troy likely dressed in a very loud t-shirt.

We count ourselves lucky getting to chat with Dan and learning more about Fall's approach to beer and their signature culture. Dan even brought gifts! Making it's 3rd (or is it the 4th?) appearance on the show is Brad's personal favorite of Fall's lineup: Let's Go IPA. And to round things out we also had another Fall staple: Plenty For All Pilsner, which has been on the show as well, because guys... Fall makes incredibly great beer and we enjoy it. So grab a coldie, and let's learn some things about beer and these North Park legends!

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 13, 2020 48:55

Welcome back to the Happy Half Hour! Today we’re sipping beer virtually with Esthela Davila and learning about the educational nonprofit she cofounded, Mujeres Brew Club. Mujeres means “women” in Spanish, and Esthela created the monthly club along with Carmen Favela of Border X Brewing to provide a safe space for women, especially Latinas, to network, learn about craft beer, and break barriers in the industry. Mujeres Brew Club is inclusive and open to anyone who wants to learn about beer, and Esthela launched it in Barrio Logan—where she grew up—a neighborhood that is around 80 percent Latinx. Since its founding last summer, the club has acquired its own brewery space; they took over the former Alta Brewing in Bread & Salt, and Esthela shares their upcoming opening plans. Esthela also talks about how intimidating it is to go to a bar and not know what to order, how many people of Latinx descent are not exposed to craft beer, and why the industry needs to be more welcoming. Craft beer has a well-known diversity problem, and a report released last year by the Brewers Association showed nearly 90 percent of craft brewery owners are white, and barely eight percent of brewers are women. And yes, we talk about beer, and Esthela shares her current favorites--tune in to find out what they are. In Hot Plates, we have a lot of good news to share this week. Arlo, a restaurant led by a chef who cooked at Joël Robuchon in Las Vegas, opened its doors in Mission Valley (yes, Mission Valley!) yesterday. ¡Salud! in Barrio Logan reopened for service, and so did Mister A’s—their patio is open for dining starting next Tuesday, and they’re also offering takeout. Pandemic Pizza, a business started by two prominent local chefs who were furloughed, has found a home inside RoVino The Foodery. Chef Angelo Sosa, formerly of Death by Tequila in Encinitas (our readers’ choice winner for Best Restaurant in 2019) will be on a new cooking show on HBO Max featuring singer Selena Gomez, Selena + Chef. The first episode airs tonight. For Two People for Takeout, Esthela recommends Deft Brewing and Cucina Caprese, both in Bay Park. Troy’s pick is Chuy’s Taco Shop, and David selected Fall Brewing. My pick this week is Red Sea Ethiopian, which the Union-Tribune recently wrote a great article about. Thank you for listening! As always, we want to hear from our listeners. Do you have a question for Troy? Need a recommendation for takeout? Is there a guest you want us to book on the show? Let us know! We’re taping this week’s episode from our sponsor's location, Bayside Kitchen + Bar at the Hilton Garden Inn in Little Italy, which offers SoCal-inspired comfort foods, craft cocktails, and a vibrant mid-century setting. This week, we have a very special guest, celebrity chef Michael Mina. Michael was recently in town to open the first San Diego location of International Smoke, his barbecue concept with cookbook author and TV host Ayesha Curry, which Troy got the First Look at. Michael grew up in Eastern Washington state, and after high school he moved to Seattle to attend college and started working at the restaurant located inside the Space Needle. This kicked off his love of food, and he switched gears and moved to New York City to attend the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park. Michael went to own to open his namesake restaurants in San Francisco and Las Vegas, which each have a Michelin star. Today, through his company the Mina Group, he owns over 40 restaurants around the world. We chatted with Michael about the International Smoke concept and how it was inspired by cooking traditions found around the world, and the art of smoking meats and live-fire cooking. We also learned that Carl Schroeder, the executive chef at Market in Del Mar, used to work for Michael back in the day, and talked about how much the industry has changed over the years. Michael’s San Diego pick for Two People, $50, was Chiko, and the staff liked Claire’s on Cedros and Puesto. In Hot Plates, we learned about Green Oceanside Kitchen, the city of Oceanside’s new food recovery and preservation facility; La Doña, the new Mexican restaurant in Ocean Beach that’s going to replace the former Nati’s; and The Holding Company, a three-story drinking and live music venue in Ocean Beach from the owners of OB Noodle House. We also talked about Artisan Noodle Tatsuki, a new ramen shop downtown helmed by an alum of LA’s famed Tsujita (which has a one-hour wait). We want to note that there has been a delay in the restaurant’s opening date: It’s now estimated to be August 31. David’s 60 Second Beer Review this week is our special beer collaboration with Fall Brewing, the Best of San Diego Watermelon Sour. This week’s Hot Topic is whether the golden age for restaurants is over. Troy has written about this, and the Washington Post recently noted that fast-casual places have taken over and the future looks bleak for traditional sit-down establishments. The Best of San Diego Party is this Friday! Taste samples from more than 80 restaurants at the most delicious evening of the year. It’s on August 16 at Liberty Station, and it’s your last chance to get tickets! Insiders get a special discount on tickets and front of the line entry.

In this prologue, Dave is adrift on the Trolley, lost in a wasteland and desperately trying to avoid Star Wars spoilers. But luckily, he’s still able to receive phone calls on that Power Glove because Andy’s heard some news.   Andy has a Sir Patrick Stewart. Dave has a Sir Patrick Stewart. Something about that seems off…   But who cares, because they have beer! Andy is drinking the Pilsner from Highland Brewing Company in Asheville, NC and Dave Green Hat IPA from Fall Brewing in San Diego, CA.   This may be a short call, but the Dudes still have some quickdraws to take up Andy’s battery juice. They include the secret message blinking on top of the Capitol Records building in Hollywood, an explorer discovering that human flesh is bad for you, American Airlines having a Merry Glitchmas and a German rapper who really really really likes Spongbob.   With Star Wars: The Last Jedi fast approaching, the dudes must go dark and avoid the spoilers strewn through Disney’s marketing. But they were caught unprepared…   SHIELDS UP!
