Oregon high school teams share first place honors at national civics competition

Students from Sprague High School in Salem and Lincoln High School in Portland are co-champions of a national civics competition that tests students’ knowledge and understanding of the U.S. Constitution. But it’s how they won that has made this year’s “We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution National Finals” one for the history books.  Sprague High School’s team consisted of just two members, seniors Matthew Meyers and Colin Williams. They won a spot at the national finals in Washington, D.C. after winning second place in the state competition in January, behind Lincoln High School.  At the finals, Meyers and Williams faced off against teams with 20 or more players in the 3-day competition, fielding questions about constitutional law and Supreme Court cases from a panel of judges and legal experts. When the scores of all 32 teams were tallied, the duo from Salem were initially declared winners on April 11, with the Lincoln team finishing in third place. But according to reporting by The Oregonian and New York Times, Patrick Magee-Jenks, who teaches social studies at Lincoln High and coaches its constitution team, found what appeared to be a mistake in his team’s score. That prompted officials at The Center for Civic Competition, which organizes the annual competition, to investigate and correct the scoring results, with both Sprague and Lincoln High School prevailing as this year’s national champions.   Meyers and Williams join us to talk about this remarkable outcome, along with Magee-Jenks and Audrey Farrimond, a junior at Lincoln High School and member of its constitution team.

In an episode which features a turn of the tables, Jose Cruz interviews his co-host, the one and only Nancy Sasaki, the CEO of the United Way of San Diego County. Nancy, who has spent her entire career in the non-profit world, has been leading United Way San Diego for just over five years. During these five years, Nancy has managed to find new ways to serve San Diego, particularly communities which have not seen the level of investment needed to generate life changing outcomes. One major, multi-partner initiative recently created and led by United Way is the "STEAM-to-Careers" program to expose high school students from Escondido and Lincoln High to the various career pathways in the world of STEAM. Often misunderstood and pigeonholed as careers only for those strong in math and engineering, STEAM-to-Careers is opening the aperture and showing students that there are many paths to enjoyable STEAM careers. And how does the program work? In collaboration with several partners, including Fleet Science Center, Paving Great Futures, San Diego Workforce Partnership, Junior Achievement, Escondido Compact, and SAY San Diego, STEAM-to-Careers is a 10-week rotational program with engineering, financial literacy, healthcare, and multi-media intensives. Students also participate in field trips to see STEAM in action by way of visiting companies such as Solar Turbines, Rady Children's Hospital, SDG&E, and Illumina. A very cool program built upon knowledge acquistion and knowledge application. You'll really enjoy this incredible episode which amplifies the excellent work of United Way of San Diego County. Here are some other takeaways from the interview:The impetus for creating STEAM-to-Careers was the recognition that 60% of jobs in San Diego County require post-secondary educationThe lack of awareness and access to STEAM in underserved communities is large and without programs like STEAM-to-Careers, many young adults will be challenged in finding many of the best high-paying jobs in the futureNancy's thoughts on the importance of reading at grade level by 3rd gradeIdeas for helping students pay for college once they get excited about a STEAM careerUpcoming opportunities with United Way, including the holiday drive for STEAM kitsAn excellent interview from a passionate gap minder. Thank you, Nancy, for your contributions in San Diego, your leadership of the United Way of San Diego County, and for joining us on The Gap Minders, the very show for which you are the Founding Co-Host! Enjoy this episode and be sure to subscribe to the show.If you have any questions or want to contact Nancy or Jose, please send an email to podcast@uwsd.org. How I Got Here with Dave Fiore

In this episode, host Dave Fiore speaks with Sherman Rosier, owner of Fit and Functional, a personal fitness and wellness studio in Tallahassee. Sherman's interest in fitness was born as a runner at Cobb Middle School, where he had the chance to train with the Lincoln High cross country team. He would go on to study physical therapy at Florida A&M University and become a personal trainer – developing a hybrid approach to wellness that focuses on general fitness and also helps those with limitations. His interest in business was piqued after working summers with his grandfather on a hog farm and in his stucco business. While he appreciated the experience, Sherman decided he would rather be the person writing the checks. His path took a twist, literally, in high school, when he felt his decision to wear dreadlocks negatively impacted the way he was perceived – both at his jobs at a grocery store and fine dining restaurant and later as a student in the FAMU College of Business and Industry. Sherman has weathered the storms of the Great Recession and COVID shutdowns and continues to follow his dream to make Tallahassee a little more fit – and functional.

California Appeals San Diego Judge's Ruling Overturning Assault Weapon Ban Description: State leaders announced Thursday that an appeal has been filed in response to a San Diego federal judge's ruling that overturned California's three-decade-old ban on assault weapons. Plus, the San Diego Unified School District announced on Tuesday a new principal for Lincoln High. Melissa Agudelo will serve as co-principal with the current principal, Stephanie Brown. And while parents await further guidance on vaccinating children under 12, many are wondering what social precautions must be taken as California prepares to reopen on June 15. Then, the loss of taste and smell is now widely known as a telltale sign of COVID-19. But fewer people are aware of another potential lingering side effect: when scents and flavors become distorted. Also, more than 12,000 American Legion posts closed for at least part of the pandemic. Those closures left some posts in financial trouble. Finally, in a new episode of the KPBS Explore podcast, "The Parker Edison Project," we talk with a photographer who's worked on everything from album covers to popular movies like "Friday" and "Exit Through the Gift Shop."

First: Several local Republican politicians seized on a local agency's call for teachers to volunteer to conduct some lessons for the migrant girls being temporarily housed at the Convention Center to try and stoke resentment and anger toward the girls. In doing so, they also publicized some outright falsehoods. Meanwhile, as vaccinations continue and life starts inching back toward normal, scooters are making a comeback. We recalled how, pre-pandemic, this was an issue that many San Diego civic leaders actually took seriously. And finally, VOSD's Will Huntsberry reported this week that Lincoln High's leadership team is being shaken up once again. The district responded to the story by doubling down on the narrative that everything is great at Lincoln and that suggesting otherwise demonstrates something sinister, a kind of gaslighting that benefits no one. Some of us come from places of brokenness and hurt, some from places of overflowing gratitude, and others of us come from places somewhere in-between extremes.Whatever place we’ve inhabited this week, we recognize the power of Your story at work in our lives. We gather here to partake in this one enduring story and to take up Your good news for ourselves and our neighbors.God, give us Your good news - fresh - this morning. In the hustle and bustle of our daily routines, in our too-often- stagnant mindsets, we have the tendency to overlook the power of Your story in our lives. We seek life where life cannot be found. We stumble. We blunder. We fail. By all definitions, we are imperfect. In our brokenness, we turn to You. God, You make beauty of our messes. At the core of our lives, Your story is at play. In our comings and goings, You are present. We thank You for inviting us to live our humanity purposefully. It is not always easy, yet in Your goodness alone, we find true life.God, You are good. You have been writing Your story forever. To the people of Israel, You announced peace through Jesus. In Judea, You spread the news of Jesus’ baptism and Your miraculous workings in His life. You fulfilled Your story in Christ’s death and resurrection. Even in this present age, Your good news spreads. Your story is the best story ever told. Your gospel is the best news the world has known. God, may we know the power and beauty of Your story at work in our lives. Amen.

Today, we are going to do something a little different.  Last week, an old high school friend of mine, Andy Avila, who DJ’s for a local radio station, KZUM in Lincoln Nebraska, asked if I would attend an interview with our old wrestling coach, Mr. Thomas Christie.  Coach is retiring from Lincoln Public Schools after 43 golden years and Andy wanted to do something special to recognize a man who has influenced hundreds of young men and women to be responsible, motivated adults.  His contributions to Lincoln Public Schools is second to none.  His contributions to Lincoln High Wrestling is unmatched.  I believe I can speak on behalf of any wrestler he has ever coached….thanks TC.  Your leadership and influence made all of us better men on and off the mat. And for that, we salute you   The following interview was taped live on KZUM 89.3 on June 16th, 2018 and should be credited to Andy Avila aka DJ Aztec.  Also in this interview is Adrian Martinez aka The Champ….who was a 2 time state champion and who contributed to Lincoln High’s Team State Title in 1992.   I’ll end this intro with one of my favorite quotes from Coach Christie, “It’s not how you start the race, it’s how you finish”.   Ladies and Gentlemen, allow me to introduce, Mr. Thomas Christie

Lincoln High is a struggling school. A string of administrative problems and increasing violence between students at Lincoln continues to prompt many families to send their kids to schools outside their neighborhood. But Karly Van Holten saw something she liked about Lincoln. Despite having other high school options, she told her mom she wanted to stay in her neighborhood and go to Lincoln. "Everything about Lincoln screams community," she said. "I learned how to be in a community and how to be one with others rather than just being a high school student." The Lincoln High senior has excelled at the school. She's been accepted to more than 30 colleges. Van Holten joins Scott Lewis and Laura Kohn to talk about her experience at Lincoln High and how it shaped her for success. Also on the podcast, Gina Gianzero, executive of Diamond Educational Excellence Partnership, joins Lewis and Kohn to talk about how the nonprofit is helping kids in southeastern San Diego stay in the educational pipeline. "We emerged with a common understanding of the problem," she said. "Which we say are leaks in this pipeline that runs from cradle to college to career. And we focus on stopping those early leaks." She said one of the common hurdles families face is the months of learning students lose during summer break. More commonly known as the "summer slide," research shows kids from low-income communities usually suffer the most during this time. That's why every summer, DEEP gives students from southeastern San Diego the opportunity to continue their education outside of school by offering literacy support, field trips, arts activities and more. “The research shows that all these kinds of enrichment activities are pretty critical to making this an experience for these children that will ultimately empower them,” Gianzero said. Voice of San Diego education reporter Mario Koran is leaving his post. His reporting on San Diego schools over the past five years has pulled back the curtain on several policies and practices that affect local families. He’s tackled everything from school discipline, graduation rates, administrative scandals, bilingual education and more. Koran sits down with hosts Scott Lewis and Laura Kohn to look back at some of his most impactful work and the hurdles he had to overcome to report those stories. Koran said one of the biggest challenges education reporters face is access to students and faculty. Having a good idea of what happens inside classrooms isn’t just essential to knowing how a community can improve their schools, but it keeps those in power accountable. When local school districts start denying reporters access, transparency fades. After Koran unveiled a series of scandals involving former board trustee Marne Foster, the San Diego Unified School District began shutting out Koran, making it difficult for him to get the information he needed. “That was the moment where I had to sort of chart my own course,” he said. “I think that took me some time to try to navigate that, but eventually I think I found a way to keep reporting, to keep doing my job." Koran went on to break important stories, including the district's practice of sending parents to collections when they don't pay school bus fees, he covered an alleged rape of a student at Lincoln High and the torment it caused a teacher there, and he dug into how San Diego Unified counseled some struggling students to transfer to charter schools.
