Welcome back to the Hangin' with the AD PodcastThis is a special episode for us, because we're joined once again by a familiar voice and a great friend of the show—Steve “Throney” Throne. Each year, we're fortunate to sit down with the current President of the NIAAA, and this annual conversation has become one of our favorite traditions. In 2025, that role belongs to Steve Throne, and today we're excited to reflect on his year of service, leadership, and vision for athletic administrators across the country. For those who may be new to the podcast, Steve serves as the activities director and an assistant principal at Millard South High School in Omaha, Nebraska. He first joined us back on Episode 87 in 2023. Later that year, the NIAAA Board of Directors selected him as President-Elect, and throughout 2025 he has served as President of the NIAAA. In this episode, we'll catch up with “Throney,” as he's known nationwide, to talk about his presidential theme, Link It Up, the relationships that define our profession, innovative programs happening at Millard South, and what athletic administrators can take away from this year's National Athletic Directors Conference. Whether you're a veteran AD, a first-time conference attendee, or someone simply looking to grow as a leader, this conversation is packed with insight, energy, and practical takeaways. So settle in—this is our annual conversation with the NIAAA President, Steve Throne.

When leadership becomes tied too tightly to a title, burnout, insecurity, and pressure follow. This episode calls leaders back to what truly matters: character, values, and heart-led leadership. Grounded in Scripture and leadership research, this short but powerful message will help you lead anchored, steady, and confident—no matter the season. Scripture Referenced:1 Samuel 16:7 — God looks at the heart, not the outward appearanceColossians 3:23 — Leading and working with purpose and integrityLeadership Insight: Research on authentic leadership shows that leaders who anchor their identity in values rather than position experience higher trust, stronger relationships, and lower emotional exhaustion. What if the real secret to long term leadership is not endurance at all, but learning how not to lose yourself along the way? In this standout episode of Aspire to Lead, Principal Evan Robb returns with a candid and deeply human look at what it truly means to lead for the long game. From becoming a principal at thirty two and opening a school of more than one thousand three hundred students to spending over two decades in the role, Evan shares the honest lessons that titles never teach such as overconfidence, exhaustion, rediscovering balance, and the joy that only comes when you learn to lead yourself first. Joshua and Evan explore what sustainable leadership requires in real, everyday practice. They discuss choosing presence over busyness, building a school where leadership is shared rather than stacked on a single person, and protecting your life outside the building so you can show up grounded and focused inside it. Evan speaks openly about the boundaries that preserved his wellness, the relationships that restored his joy, and the personal belief system that guides every decision he makes. The conversation also highlights how passion projects including writing, speaking, and podcasting can strengthen a leader's growth when they are rooted in service and designed to create real Monday morning impact. Whether you are stepping into leadership for the first time or seeking renewed purpose after many years in the seat, this episode offers clarity, encouragement, and actionable guidance to help you build a leadership life that lasts. About Evan Robb: Evan Robb is presently Principal of Johnson-Williams Middle School in Berryville, Virginia. He has over twenty years of experience serving as a building level principal. Prior to being a school principal, he was an English teacher, department chair, and Assistant Principal. Evan is a recipient of the Horace Mann Educator of the Year Award. In addition, the NCTE Commission on Reading selected him to serve on its national board. A TEDx Speaker, Evan offers inspirational keynotes, workshops, and on-going professional learning opportunities across the country on leadership, mindset, culture, impactful change and how to improve literacy in schools. Evan has shared his ideas with thousands of educators at dozens of workshops across the country. His first book titled, The Principal's Leadership Sourcebook: Practices, Tools, and Strategies for Building a Thriving School Community was published by Scholastic in the fall of 2007. His next book, The Ten- Minute Principal was published by Corwin in May 2019. Evan and Laura Robb collaborated with Dave Burgess Publishing to write Team Makers, which was published in August of 2019. In addition, Evan is partnering with Laura Robb to write, A School Full of Readers, with Benchmark Education, Fall 2019. Thankfully Thinking with Frederick Teaser:I'm planning on this episode being a little light. Honestly, I'm not sure how many people will tune in given we are dropping in a week where many of us are thinking more about dinner than data. We are not going to do any music this show, just acknowledging sponsors and diving into two themes. In part 1, we'll look at the motivation equation. I first covered this in episode 247 earlier this year, on April Fool's day of all things. I received a call the same day from an assistant superintendent who said “I want you to do this as a keynote at my principal's retreat.” I was already working with a speaking coach, so I pivoted from reclaiming purpose to The Motivation Equation. Since April, I've given the talk in several different formats, multiple times. All that to say, my thinking on motivation has matured since that episode way back in April. Today, I want to give you a concrete example of thee factors that significantly impact motivation: appeal, ability, and capacity.  In part 2, we will pivot to a different motivation topic and I'll share the results of my experiment with applying Tony Robbins' 7 morning affirmations.  Sponsor Spot 1:I'd like to thank Kaleidoscope Adventures for sponsoring today's show. Of course, I'm thankful for my wife Pam, the light of my life. This summer was rough as she fought kidney stones but she's back to going strong. Pam retired from WCU at the end of June, and I'm enjoying watching her find herself again and looking forward to how she navigates and grows into this next phase of life.  Finally, I'm thankful for you. I know it sounds cliché but I mean it sincerely. You are doing the hard work, the vital work, every day. Those of you who reach out and let me know I'm supporting that work – you keep me going, you inspire me every day to grow and be better.  Key Points Part 11.     M=V/E2.     Why important: Feedback=>Curiosity=>Collaboration3.     Lots of things influence Motivation4.     FH trail5.     Think of the reason6.     Appeal, ability, capacity7.     With others, for task, skill, or behavior, assess appeal, ability, and cpacity  Sponsor Spot 2:I want to thank IXL for sponsoring this podcast… Everyone talks about the power of data-driven instruction. Some guests are more high energy than others and I want to comment on that before we get into today's interview. I am hesitant to say “all leaders should bring the juice” as people need to be able to be authentic and different leadership styles work in different space and with different people. That said, we also need to recognize:People consistently look to their leaders for hopeThey look to leaders for cues on how to react to diversityThey look to leaders to inform if they should be focused on the good things or the bad thingsIn today's interview, I want you to listen not only to what our guest says, but also how she says it. Justice — delayed, but finally delivered. In this episode of Hidden Killers with Tony Brueski, we cover the stunning verdict in the case of Abby Zwerner, the Virginia first-grade teacher who was shot by her six-year-old student inside Richneck Elementary School. After nearly two years, a jury has ruled that former assistant principal Ebony Parker is liable for ignoring repeated warnings that the child had a gun — awarding $10 million in damages to Zwerner. This isn't just a lawsuit — it's an indictment of an entire system that looked the other way. Teachers came forward that morning. They told Parker the student had a weapon in his backpack. They begged her to act. But she didn't. Hours later, Abby stood at the front of her classroom — teaching, protecting, doing her job — when that six-year-old pulled the trigger. The bullet nearly killed her. Multiple surgeries later, she's still living with nerve damage, pain, and trauma that will never fully fade. But tonight's verdict is more than compensation — it's a warning shot to every school district in America: when staff ignore danger, when leadership protects its image instead of its people, the courtroom will hold you accountable. Tony Brueski breaks down the key testimony, courtroom reactions, and what this landmark decision means for educators, parents, and every student walking into class tomorrow. The Abby Zwerner verdict isn't just about one assistant principal — it's about a national failure to take threats seriously until it's too late. Watch as Tony walks through: – How multiple teachers sounded the alarm — and were ignored – Why the jury sided with Zwerner and what evidence swayed them – The emotional impact of her testimony and survival – What comes next for Parker's pending criminal charges This is the story of one teacher's fight for justice — and the system's long-overdue reckoning. #AbbyZwerner #HiddenKillers #TonyBrueski #TeacherShooting #EbonyParker #SchoolSafety #TrueCrimePodcast #JusticeForAbby #VirginiaTrial #HiddenKillersLive #TrueCrime Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Send us a text In this Power Surge, Dr. Mel breaks down one of the biggest traps leaders fall into — thinking communication has happened just because words were spoken. Inspired by George Bernard Shaw's famous quote, this episode challenges school leaders to go beyond talking at people and start ensuring their message is truly understood. Because clear communication isn't about what you said — it's about what they heard. Key Points: The biggest communication mistake leaders make is assuming clarity.Sending a message (email, announcement, or meeting) isn't the same as transferring meaning.Leadership communication happens in layers — words, tone, timing, trust, and follow-up.Confusion and misalignment often come from unclear messaging, not lack of buy-in.Great leaders check for understanding just like great teachers do.Power Surge Takeaway: Don't mistake words for understanding. True communication happens when people not only hear you but can repeat your message with the same intent you spoke it. Action Step: Before the end of the week, revisit one message you've recently shared with your team. Ask them directly: “What did you hear me say?” Use what you learn to tighten your clarity, tone, and follow-through. Scripture Tie-In (optional for your brand): “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” — Colossians 4:6 Download Upside and use my code MELINDA35278 to get 15¢ per gallon extra cash back on your first gas fill-up and 10% extra cash on your first food purchase!
