Breaking Free - A Body, Mind, Spirit Approach to Mental Health

In this episode I invite Dr. Sarah Campbell to discuss her soul work prompted by her graduation from her Doctoral Program in naturopathic  medicine and a master's in Chinese medicine. Sarah finally gave herself space to feel the cycles of anger, grief, and finally joy at the retrieval of lost parts of Self she had dissociated in order to "fit in" to her programs that did not value her perspectives on healing.  Sarah, who is a powerful teacher on the integration of body, mind, and spirit in our healing journey, shares how she uses free form movement such as dance, walking, intuitive touch, and other somatic therapies to "unwind" the emotions that get stuck in her body. She both celebrates the mind work of conceptualizing our trauma that has been done with traditional talk therapies and calls for a new season of growth that incorporates the mind-body connection through somatic therapies. She also celebrates slowing down and being present with her body-felt experience and re-parenting herself by celebrating herself for "being Sarah" and not for her achievements while giving her nervous system a needed rest after such a long season of producing.  Sarah and I explore the universality of the body-stored trauma that people have when cutting off parts of themselves in order to fit into systems rather than living from authenticity.  We further explain the joy that can be felt as we create intentional space to pause in our lives and connect to our body-felt wisdom that knows what is needed to retrieve these lost part of Self.

EDINBURG, Texas - A UT-Rio Grande Valley engineering student has explained what it is like to be tutored by Dr. Karen Lozano, professor of mechanical engineering and the Julia Beecherl Endowed Professor at UTRGV.Alexa Villarreal is one of 18 students that will be in the inaugural class for the university's new Doctor of Philosophy degree program in Materials Science and Engineering.Asked about studying with Dr. Lozano, Villarreal said: “Oh my god, it's amazing. And, honestly, it's kind of an engineer's dream come true. I mean, she's an inventor of one of the latest technologies in nanotechnology, and just to be able to learn from her and learn from the whole staff, it's incredible, honestly. It's an honor.”Lozano is a member of both the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Inventors.Asked if Lozano is an inspiration to her, Villarreal said: “She really is. And we're actually from the same hometown in Mexico, which is Monterrey, Mexico. So, you can only understand how much of an inspiration she can be.”Villarreal gave her comments to the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service at an Inaugural Ph.D. Launch Celebration hosted by UTRGV's College of Engineering & Computer Science. During the program, Villarreal was given a shoutout from the stage for always coming up with “crazy ideas.” Asked by the Guardian if she would continue with them, Villarreal said: “Oh, most definitely. You know, my ideas are just starting so the world can definitely be prepared for them.”The new Doctor of Philosophy degree program in Materials Science and Engineering is the ninth doctoral program to be approved for the university since its inception in 2015, and the seventh to be implemented in the past two years. It is the first Ph.D. program secured by CECS.Another student participating in the the new UTRGV doctoral program in engineering is Allan Cedillo. The Guardian asked Cedillo what he thought of comments made at the CECS event that university system leaders in Austin used to think South Texas could not produce engineers.“Oh man, there's a lot more potential that our students have. We went from a teaching site to research and development and having a center for research and development here in nanotechnology, that's just a big eye opener because that just speaks so much about the community here in South Texas. We're ambitious, we want to grow educationally. It speaks wonders of who we are as a Latina community here in the Valley.”To read the new stories and watch the news videos of the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service go to www.riograndeguardian.com.

The NeoLiberal Round
Introducing: Neoliberal Globalization Reconsidered, Neo-Capitalism and the Death of Nations

The NeoLiberal Round

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 2, 2023 7:16

This upcoming book in the Neoliberalism series written by Renaldo McKenzie, delves into the concept of wealth and its distribution, challenging the notion that hard work and savings lead to prosperity. Renaldo argues in Neoliberal Globalization Reconsidered, Neo-Capitalism and the Death of Nations that certain groups and regions, particularly Black and Brown people in the Global South and Global North, have been denied access to wealth due to historical exploitation and systems that devalue their labor. The book highlights the impact of neoliberalism, a privileged economic philosophy, which perpetuates the transfer of decision-making power away from working-class individuals and communities. Co-authored and prefaced by Professor Emeritus, Dr. Martin Oppenheimer, it takes an academic and interdisciplinary approach.... It builds upon the previous work on neoliberalism but expands its scope to explore the importance of cinema, globalization, and the position of Black and Brown people in the world. The author revisits Marxism and Capitalism, analyzing how systems are changing and whose interests they serve. Resistance and the fight for change are also examined, alongside the potential of digital technology to challenge violence and discrimination. The book aims to provide deeper insights into the struggle for independence and true freedom. In “Neoliberal Globalization Reconsidered,” the prevailing motif of the Caribbean as a paradise is questioned, emphasizing its dependence and vulnerability as states detached from their people. This is a continuation of the considerations in Neoliberalism book 1 entitled, Neoliberalism, Globalization, Income Inequality, Poverty and Resistance. The realities of the Global South and the black position in the world are explored, considering the historical strategies of the dominant class to attain supernormal profit through neo-capitalistic systems. The book critically examines the socio-economic history and current dynamics of the global north and south, questioning the efficacy of resistance and Pan-African integration. The changing power dynamics of the neoliberal globalized world are analyzed, and opportunities for future transformation are discussed. The book also addresses the issue of power and privilege, highlighting how former colonial masters shape the independence of former colonies to maintain their dominance. The driving forces behind neoliberal globalization, neo-capitalism, and pseudo-communism are explored, revealing the hegemony of the master through international organizations such as the WTO and the World Bank. The book references specific examples to illustrate the suppression of new nations and the realization of their own visions.... From Artificial Intelligence that opines the end of life transforming the dialectic of whether we live to work or work to live, and the value of a society based on work and any corresponding value from that which allows the dynamics of life based in privilege. To question who really rules the world? US, UN or China and Russia and their strategic alliance and interference in a world driven by greed and nepotism which China has spared no time capitalizing on as they use this knowledge strategically to their advantage to direct American policy through US corporations driven by their bottom line.... Overall, Neoliberal Globalization Reconsidered, seeks to challenge prevailing narratives and explore the complex realities of wealth, power, and independence in a global context. It aims to provide a critical analysis of the socio-economic dynamics that shape the lives of people in the global north, the global south, and the black and brown communities. The book will be published by The NeoLiberal Corporation by late August 2023 and is copyrighted by Renaldo McKenzie. You may pre-order beginning August 1, 2023. Renaldo McKenzie is an Adjunct Professor at Jamaica Theological Seminary, and in the Doctoral Program at Georgetown University. renaldocmckenzie --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theneoliberal/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theneoliberal/support

There are three dozen tribal colleges and universities around the country. None of them have a doctoral program. But that's all set to change this fall when Navajo Technical University starts up an accredited advanced degree track in Diné culture and language sustainability. Administrators say it will bolster language preservation, but also lead to research aimed at tackling specific issues on the Navajo Nation. The new program also represents a major leap forward for Native higher education and could be a model for other tribal colleges that are looking to both increase their educational attainment and provide culturally-specific academic insights to help tribal citizens. Today on Native America Calling, we speak with Dr. Wafa Hozien, dean and head of Diné and graduate studies, and Dr. Colleen Bowman (Navajo), provost for Navajo Technical University.

Dr. Cheryl Harding, PhD, is Professor Emerita of Psychology at Hunter College, City University of New York and of the Doctoral Program in Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience, The Graduate Center, City University of New York. She originally trained as a behavioral neuroendocrinologist, studying how hormones acted on the brain to alter behavior and how an animal's behavior affected its hormone levels. In 2006, she became fascinated by early reports that mold exposure caused brain fog, interfering with normal cognitive function. A study from Mt. Sinai Hospital in NYC that found that the symptoms of mold-exposed patients could not be distinguished from those of patients with mild to moderate traumatic brain injury made it clear that experimental research was critically needed. There was no known physiological mechanism to explain how mold could cause all the symptoms which mold patients reported. So she retrained in psychoneuroimmunology examining how the immune system affects brain function and behavior, obtained grant funds, and carried out a series of experiments in mice. These experiments demonstrated for the first time that mold exposure did cause brain inflammation with resultant behavioral dysfunction, that nontoxic mold stimuli were also a danger, and that innate immune activation appeared to trigger this cognitive and emotional dysfunction.Transcript: PENDING Find us on Linktree, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter,  TikTok and YoutubeNeed help navigating your mold injury without breaking the bank? Adapting to a new life across the country while pursuing a PhD, in the midst of a pandemic is not simple. In this episode of Making Public Health Personal, doctoral student at CUNY SPH, Ivonne Quiroz, MPH shares the story of her journey as a nontraditional student pursuing a public health education. Ivonne speaks with podcast host Laura Meoli-Ferrigon about her passion for food justice, race, culture, and health. She also opens up about how she personally navigates challenges with ADHD, a story that gives hope for other neurodivergent students, and/or students with disabilities to succeed. Ivonne Quiroz is from California and graduated with a Master's degree in Public Health from the University of California, Irvine. She also has a Bachelor's degree in Biology from San Francisco State University. Despite its physical distance from her former career as an Organizational Director for social organizations on the West Coast, New York City was the perfect place for her to pursue a doctoral degree in Community Health and Health Policy. Not only is NYC diverse, but the programs available at CUNY SPH were a perfect fit for Ivonne. While the pandemic's shift to fully online learning allowed her to balance her educational and career opportunities, the flexible classes regularly available at CUNY SPH allow Ivonne to thrive. While pursuing her PhD, she has gained experience as an adjunct teaching a course on Health Equity, Communication and Advocacy - a great resume builder for someone who wants to be a researcher in higher education. Ivonne also has found career opportunities through her connections with CUNY SPH professors, as a research assistant at the CUNY Urban Food Policy Institute. Her personal mission as a latina and public health advocate is being realized now, and surely will continue post-graduation. For students interested in a similar path but not sure where to begin, we discuss the application process for a public health degree, the flexibility of CUNY SPH's programs, and the career-building opportunities available to current students. Ivonne's story gives hope for anyone who doesn't fit the mold of a traditional college student, but hopes to make a difference in the world.
