Send us a textFrom begging Jock Penny's autograph at Coffee Dan's, to blundering into a surf music contest at Wallich's, to brushing past a wisp of her former self outside a flower shop, Wanda is waylaid by memories of better times—the onion rings at Frankie's (“the world's only delicious vegetable”); the awards ceremony where, slid between two beaus at an effortless 103 lbs, she'd been honored for her heartfelt report on the loss of a local movie house (could she ever do works again that honor the daydreams of women in Bell Gardens and Reseda?). All this, as she searches and yearns for the perfect, maybe last, gesture of love to bring her dying Grandma Neva. And whose all-knowing voice is this anyway, interviewing her to reflect on her finest achievements? Catherine Hein's former life took her from 20 years in the entertainment industry to two years in a homeless women's shelter. MILLIONS OF DOLLARS GENERATED THROUGH CRIMINAL ACTIVITY WHERE DOES ALL THE MONEY GO? California AG, authorities announce sentence for defendants in major retail crime case in San Mateo County | KRON4 Five people charged with conspiracy, organized retail theft, possession of stolen property, and charging enhancements for aggravated white-collar crime. Mass theft of over $8 million dollars in over-the-counter drugs and merchandise stolen in the U.S. and sold overseas. One of the major cases happened in Walnut Creek Ca when 80 people raided a Nordstrom and a San Jose jewelry store. It was the target of smash and grab burglars. California Attorney General Rob Bonta said that when Sheriff's Deputies and State Department of Justice Agents searched a Concord warehouse and storage units, they found massive amounts of merchandise stolen from retail thefts of stores like CVS, Target and Walgreens as well as commercial burglaries, resident burglaries and auto burglaries. The stolen goods are sent offshore and converted into legitimate revenue. Human Trafficking Gang Washed Millions Through Hard Rock Tampa: Feds A violent human trafficking gang smuggled more than 100 Mexican and Central American laborers into the U.S. to work in “brutal conditions” on farms in Georgia, Florida, and Texas, federal prosecutors said this week. Victims were kept in horrendous conditions, some were raped, kidnapped, and beaten, and their lives and the lives of their families were threatened. This transnational Criminal Organization generated more than $200 million through exploitation. Much of it was laundered by buying and selling commercial properties and millions of dollars were laundered through the Hard Rock Casino in Tampa. The Bicycle Casino Fined $500K for Federal Anti-Money Laundering Violations The Bicycle Casino in Bell Gardens, California, was fined $500,000 by federal authorities on Friday for failing to file proper anti money laundering reports. The Bycycle Casino failed to report a Chinese national high roller who visited the casino about 100 times during a nearly 8 month stretch in 2016. The high roller employed an assistant who handled more than $100 million in cash transactions at the casino. Members of hacking group sentenced for stealing millions in cryptocurrency An international hacking group stole millions of dollars in cryptocurrency. Six members were sentenced in connection with a multi-million-dollar SIM hijacking conspiracy. Criminals do not have to be on U.S. soil to exploit victims and they laundered nearly $20 million dollars out of the country. SIM hijacking or SIM swapping is an identity theft technique that exploits mobile phone numbers resulting in text messages controlled by “The Community”. Once “The Community” had control of a victim's phone number it was leveraged as a gateway to control online accounts such as email, cloud storage and cryptocurrency exchange accounts. “The Community's” scheme resulted in the theft of tens of millions of dollars' worth of cryptocurrency. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/million-kids/support

Prior to COVID-19, Southeast LA has long faced environmental challenges, given its location adjacent to a major freeway; has had less access to green space than the rest of the county; and have less access to grocery stores and fresh produce. As South Gate Councilmember Denise Diaz has noted, “We are the doughnut hole of LA County. A Sassy Little Podcast for Getting Over It with Sandra Ann Miller

Elizabeth Jinzo is a mom who decided things needed to be better. When her daughter was born prematurely and diagnosed with Autism, she was forced into the role of advocate and had to become an expert in navigating systems, including public education, where she fought for her daughter's integration into “regular” classrooms. She was so good at this, she started a non-profit to help other parents whose children have intellectual or developmental disabilities. In 2008, she founded D.E.S.I., which stands for Designated Exceptional Services for Independence, and is named after her daughter, Deserai. She's been repeatedly recognized and awarded for her work, and well she should be, because D.E.S.I. not only provides advocation, life skills classes and job training to its clients, it's also a community food bank, runs a thrift store and provides work programs for mothers on assistance. Then we discuss her background before turning to a conversation about covid. She relates stories from her district, how residents are seeing disproportionate infections and death due to working in low wage and the longtime environmental issues in southeastern LA county and residents are having to choose between unemployment and food insecurity, and why assistance will be a priority during the next session. Jerry and Jesus soldier on through a sickness so bad it killed Jerry's morning wood. But the Oscars aren't gonna talk about themselves, damn it. The guys disagree on a man's ability to masturbate while sick, leading Christian into an internet deep dive and way too much boner talk. None of the Wannabes are satisfied with this year's Oscar winners. They reminisce on badass movies of years past, like Babel, Y Tu Mamá Tambien, and some hotel movie Jerry loved but can't remember the name of. Then: Jussie Smollet. Jesus feels his pain, and produces not one but TWO of his own stories about being caught in terrible lies! Finally, how much do the guys love The Office? Muchísimo, guey. --- TREAT YOURSELF TO AN AMERICAN WANNABES STANDUP SHOW! The Wannabes welcome Sebastian Cetina, the hardest working man in comedy, to talk about when audiences revolt and the insanity of Abducted In Plain Sight! Sebastian helped Jerry and Jesus rise up in comedy. They remember the early days at old Mexican hotspot 58 Bar and Grill and Iguana's. Sebastian and Jesus trade stories of going to war with audiences over little people, some vicious crowd work, and fingerblasting. Christian remembers fleeing the stage in a drug-induced panic the first time Sebastian ever booked him on a show. Then, the guys have a new Netflix obsession: ABDUCTED IN PLAIN SIGHT. It's about a devilish white man who mind-rapes and then literally rapes an entire family. Christian cannot deal with any of it, while Jesus ponders the limits of mutual masturbation among straight men. TONS OF SPOILERS. You were warned. Finally, the Khloe-Kylie Feud over Tristan Thompson, America's most DGAF basketball player and Jerry's new role model. --- TREAT YOURSELF TO AN AMERICAN WANNABES STANDUP SHOW! Episode 3 is an interview with author  Désirée Zamorano. We talk about her masterful PI novel, Human Cargo; her short story, "Quickie;" Akashic Books' Mondays Are Murder flash fiction series (hers will go live on August 1st!); and we briefly touch on her literary novel, The Amado Women. Désirée isn't just a writer, she is a fellow mystery lover, and she gives a shout-out to a number of fabulous writers and books. I've linked to the websites of these contemporary writers: Edgar winner Naomi Hirahara, Ausma Zehanat Khan, Sara Gran, best-selling author Kate Atkinson, James Sallis (who has won the lifetime achievement award from Bouchercon, among many other mystery awards), Rachel Howzell Hall, Sue Ann Jaffarian, and the wonderful Steph Cha, whom I interviewed in Episode 2. Classic mystery writers include Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, John D. MacDonald (the Travis McGee novels) and Patricia Highsmith. One last influential writer mentioned, although not in the field of mystery, is Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz. We talk about books and writing, but we also discussed the need for women to be financially savvy and have an "escape fund" -- not necessarily to escape a dangerous relationship (although obviously that can help), but also so you're not stuck in a bad work situation. Money is freedom.  The most important links, however, are the ones Désirée sent me on human trafficking: Fighting Human Trafficking, and 20 Ways You Can Help If you'd rather read than listen, here is the transcript. Enjoy! Transcript of interview with Désirée Zamorano Welcome to Destination Mystery: A Podcast for Readers who Love a Good Mystery. I’m Laura Brennan. A Pushcart Prize nominee and award-winning short story author, Desiree Zamorano has wrestled with culture, identity, and the invisibility of Latinas from early on and addressed that in her commentaries which have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, NPR’s Latino USA, and Publisher’s Weekly. She is also proud of having co-authored with her sister two plays commissioned by Southern California's Bilingual Foundation for the Arts. "Reina" and "Bell Gardens 90201" received Equity productions and toured for a total of eight years. She delights in the exploration of contemporary issues of injustice and inequality, via her mystery series featuring private investigator, Inez Leon, published by Lucky Bat Books. Human Cargo was Latinidad's Mystery Pick of the Year. Her novel, Modern Cons is a story of psychological suspense where she explores the reverberations of being raised by a con artist. Laura Brennan: Thank you for being here. I'm so excited. Désirée Zamorano: Whoo-hoo! LB: How are you, Désirée? DZ: Me, too. I'm excited, too. LB: Tell me a little bit about yourself. How did you get started writing? DZ: We writers are all a crazy bunch and we probably as kids said, Oh, I want to create something so wonderful, because as kids we have fallen into this world. And as kids we have this naïve perception that writers just magically put those words on the page. Well, I wanted to magically put those words on the page! But as I got older I realized it took a lot of work to make the work look seamless. So you asked how I got into it. I always wanted to be a writer and I started sending off my short stories -- those were a big deal as I was my twenties, short stories were the thing -- and after about 100 rejections, two acceptances and $50, I thought wow, that's a lot of heartache! I mean, if I'm going to deal with rejection, I might as well go big time. So I sat down to write a novel. I'm going okay, I'm going to write the Great American novel. And I sat down to write a novel and I thought, I have no idea what I'm doing. And I thought about all the books I loved to read and I love classics, I love contemporary modern fiction, but have a real soft spot for mysteries. And what I love about mysteries, and what I loved as I sat down to write mysteries,

Men's Family Law -  This episode talks about Domestic Abuse and how men don't recognize that they are victims or targets as often as they should.   The article "HOW THE WELL MEANING SUPERBOWL COMMERCIALS FUMBLED DOMESTIC VIOLENCE" was written by David Pisarra and published on GoodMenProject.com. David reads this article for you today, it's a 750 word essay that discusses what men need to know about domestic violence.   Daniel Crespo was the mayor of Bell Gardens  when on September 30, 2014 the eve of the National Domestic Violence awareness month, his wife, Lyvette Crespo put three bullets in close proximity to each other in his chest. She claims he was an abusive cheater and it was self-defense. Which is odd considering he was fighting with their 19 year old son. Attorney James Deavitt, of www.domesticviolenceatty.com is representing Daniel Crespo's mother and brother in a wrongful death lawsuit against Lyvette Crespo.
