Welcome to the Fraudulationship to Freedom Podcast. I'm your host, Meg South, and this is episode 54, Rebuilding Your Life From the Ground Up After Narcissistic and Sociopathic Abuse. Your life is in shambles thanks to the fact that you were targeted by a narcissist or sociopath. It feels pretty bleak. Everything you've worked for, the life you planned for feels like it's imploded. Maybe you're displaced and have to find a new place to live. Maybe you are stuck in a low-paying job. Maybe you need childcare or pet care, a car, or some other essential. This is not what you had planned, and you are angry. Rightly so. Believe me, I get it. I'm not going to try to convince you things aren't as bad as they are. It's very likely that they are as bad as all that. Statistically, it's women who suffer the most financially after a divorce, not the men. I don't have any hard research to point to, but I'm guessing that women coming out of a narcissistic or sociopathically abusive situation suffer all around to a greater degree than if abuse wasn't part of the picture. There's a lot to contend with. A lot. It may be hard to even know where to begin. That's what I'd like to talk about in this episode. Victor Frankl was a psychiatrist who developed logotherapy after four years in the concentration camps during WWII. He believed that humans are motivated to find meaning in life and that meaning can be found in even the most dire of circumstances. He thought that a lot of us have “existential angst” and live in a kind of “exetential vacuum.” New Podcast: How to Spot a Military Phony Online and Avoid Being Targeted. Welcome to the Fraudulationship to Freedom podcast. I'm your host, Meg South. This is episode #48. Today's episode is about reality acceptance skills. Reality acceptance skills are another set of DBT distress tolerance skills. When we've been conned by a sociopath, it's extremely difficult to believe that someone could be so evil. And I use the word evil deliberately and in a literal sense. If sociopaths are not evil, I don't know who would qualify to be called evil. These predators deliberately sought us out as prey to accomplish their own ends without a thought or even a care as to how their lies and manipulations would impact us. This is because, as I have said in past episodes, sociopaths have no conscience. Accepting the reality that we've been duped so thoroughly is rough. But the sooner we accept reality, the sooner we can move toward healing. Today I'm going to specifically talk about · What reality acceptance skills are · Goals of reality acceptance · The difference between reality acceptance and giving up · The difference between acceptance and reality acceptance · What has to be accepted · Factors that get in the way of radical acceptance · Radical acceptance step-by-step Let's jump in. Radical acceptance is the complete and total openness to the facts of reality as they are, without throwing a tantrum or responding with willful ineffectiveness. I'll expand on this definition throughout this episode, but I want to just mention briefly what reality acceptance is not. Radical acceptance is not approval. It is not compassion or love. It is not being passive, giving up, or giving in, and it is not against change. New Podcast: How to Spot a Military Phony Online and Avoid Being Targeted. Today I want to talk about the emotion regulation skill of Opposite Action. This skill comes in handy when our emotions do not fit the facts of a situation, or do not lead to effective behavior. For example, if we are constantly thinking about making contact with the narcissist or sociopathic abuser because we're attached to them, even though we know in our heads that going back wouldn't be in our best interest, we can use the skill of opposite action to change our emotional impulse to return to them. Continuing on with the topic of emotion regulation, today I want to talk about a particular way to think about emotions, a framework if you will and how you can reduce your vulnerability to emotions, change how you feel and ultimately feel better. Let's begin with some facts about emotions. 1. Emotions are complex. In other words, they generally consist of several parts or different reactions happening at the same time. 2. Emotions are automatic. Emotions are involuntary, automatic responses to internal and external events. 3. Emotions cannot be changed directly. We can't tell ourselves to feel a different emotion and then actually feel it. We cannot use willpower to stop an emotional experience even when we desperately want to. 4. Emotions are sudden and they rise and fall. Most emotions only last for a few minutes unless we do something to make them stick around. 5. Emotions are self-perpetuating. Once an emotion starts, it keeps restarting itself. 6. Some emotions are universal. There are 10-12 universal emotions that we are born with. These include anger, disgust, fear, guilt, joy, jealousy, envy, sadness, shame, surprise, interest, love. 7. Emotions have components. These components are inter-related, and each component influences the others. Changing just one component can often change the entire emotional response. Healing after trauma isn't a straight line. One moment you'll feel ok, the next minute find yourself angry or in tears. It can be an emotional rollercoaster and just being on the emotional rollercoaster can be exhausting. Stay on the rollercoaster long enough and there's a good chance you'll get sick in one way or the other. Some of us settle into low-grade, chronic resentment. In this state, you're just going through the motions without any real joy or interest in life like you used to have. Some people get stuck in a perpetual state of anxiety, always on guard, irritable, have trouble with relationships. Some of us get stuck in avoidance of pretty much everything we used to love, including the people in our lives. We isolate. Hang out at home. Oversleep. Distract with YouTube videos. All of these things are normal behaviors after we experience a trauma. And as normal as they are, they are meant to be a temporary state. I've been thinking about the topic of “feeling better” lately. In other words, what does ‘healing' look like and feel like? A lot of women report that even years after the fraudulationship ended, they realize that they are still stuck. Sometimes this realization hits like the proverbial “ton of bricks.” Women report that they thought they were doing ok, but when they look in the mirror, they don't recognize themselves. They think back to a time before the fraudulationship and wonder what happened to the vibrant, intelligent, strong, spunky, curious, witty woman they used to be. They wonder if they will ever feel like that again. Maybe you can relate. Your feelings after betrayal and abuse are normal. In this episode I talk about the purpose of anger after betrayal and how we can get stuck in chronic resentment...and how to move out of resentment to create version 2.0 of yourself. The Takeaways: 1. You can't go back to who you were prior to the betrayal trauma. You can create version 2.0. 2. You are not broken or irreparably damaged. Your feelings are normal. 3. The highs and lows of the anger/crash cycle can turn into chronic resentment. 4. You don't need a memorial of resentment to honor or validate your pain. 5. After betrayal your brain temporarily goes into a “better safe than sorry” mode. 6. Moving from victim identity mindset to healing identity mindset is the key to moving forward in your own life and creating version 2.0. 7. You can decrease your emotional reactivity by acting on your values rather than your feelings of the moment. 8. Doing the work will build new neural connections in your brain. Welcome to the Fraudulationship to Freedom Podcast. I found myself in a fraudulationship, a relationship I thought was based on love and trust but was really based on lies and manipulation. I didn't intend to marry a sociopath, but I did. When I found out my husband was a con man masquerading as a veteran and Navy SEAL, I was stunned and heartbroken! How could someone who professed his love for me every day lie to my face for years and years? Hi! I'm Meg South and this podcast is for women survivors of narcissistic or sociopathic abuse who may feel gutted, overwhelmed, angry, confused, alone, frozen, or all of the above depending on the day. Our wings were clipped by the narcissist or sociopath, but it's not a permanent state of being! We'll talk about practical ways to break the trauma bond, clear up cognitive dissonance and create the life we all deserve. In addition, we'll work on sharpening our spidey senses so we can recognize these predatory personality types from a mile away and avoid being their next target. I hope you listen each week to discussions with fierce women survivors, activists and thought leaders, sharing real world holistic strategies for healing and building our emotional self-defense muscles.
