Never Ending Backlog: Wacky Wheels

We are ending the week off with one of the first games we think we have ever played on PC. Wacky Wheels, by Beavis Soft (now FastTrack Animations) and Apogee Software (now 3D Realms) on Steam. Granted, ours wasn't on Steam, no, it was on floppy disk, found in the shareware section of our local thrift shop. Nonetheless, you won't want to miss this classic.Steam Description:Nothing beats the excitement of playing against friends. In Wacky Wheels, you can do just that. Play with a friend in split-screen mode, play head-to-head using a modem connection or play via serial (null-modem) cable. Race against challenging computer opponents with adjustable difficulty settings.Yes, you read that right. When we were recording this podcast we had said modern, because it's been quite some time since we saw the word, modem. Obviously, this runs on DOSBox, and does so fairly well. Split screen would work, and you can likely use DOSBox's networking options to create a networked solution; however, we reviewed this for one hour, and needless to say, we just RACED!Important Links:Developer Website: https://forums.3drealms.com/vb/showthread.php?t=1825Publisher Website: https://3drealms.com/Steam Store: https://store.steampowered.com/app/358380/Wacky_Wheels/

We're ending our Autumn Sale Steam Week with a toy/game that we have had our eye on for a little while. It's technically not really a "game" since there is no objectives nor goals (then again Vanilla Minecraft was less of a game as well, but we digress); however, it has a terrific interface, amazing graphics, and is a TINY download (62mb). Today we are reviewing Oskar Stålberg's, Townscaper, on Steam.Steam Description:Build quaint island towns with curvy streets. Build small hamlets, soaring cathedrals, canal networks, or sky cities on stilts. Block by block. No goal. No real gameplay. Just plenty of building and plenty of beauty. That's it. Townscaper is an experimental passion project. More of a toy than a game. Pick colors from the palette, plop down colored blocks of house on the irregular grid, and watch Townscaper's underlying algorithm automatically turn those blocks into cute little houses, arches, stairways, bridges and lush backyards, depending on their configuration. We had to use the longer description as the initial description is, "Instant town building toy".Important Links:Developer Website: https://oskarstalberg.com/Steam Store: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1291340/Townscaper/

Only two days left of Horror Week on the Never Ending Backlog podcast. Previously, today's game was briefly installed, played once, and then immediately uninstalled. Fortunately that situation has been rectified and we are now able to play it in 5760 x 1080 resolution, on Ultra settings, and it works excellently!Today's review is Dead by Daylight. What is Dead by Daylight, according to Steam:Dead by Daylight is a multiplayer (4vs1) horror game where one player takes on the role of the savage Killer, and the other four players play as Survivors, trying to escape the Killer and avoid being caught and killed. That pretty much sums it up, if you are a fan of the slasher films, then you'll likely enjoy this game. It's gory, it's terrifying, and it's a blast to play (especially when you play as the Killer).BONUS TIP: If you are scared of things that jump at you in games, then we recommend playing as the Killer. Garth sent you away from the Great Kingdom to be raised as a peasant, and to never fulfill your destiny as the future king.Garth... haha, we still can't get over that name for an evil warlord. We're not worthy of today's review, as this game is truly a gem; and the soundtrack could be raking up millions of downloads on Spotify today, it's ear-jubilant goodness. So, crank up the volume and join Zach on this episode of the Never Ending Backlog podcast.Important Links:Publisher Website: https://3drealms.com/Steam Store: https://store.steampowered.com/app/358440/Dark_Ages/

Never Ending Backlog: Call of Duty: Ghosts

A review we have been dreading is upon us. This game is the reason we critique nearly every developer for allowing a triple-monitor resolution; while not actively optimizing the quality to at least somewhat support it. If a game can't be played at 5760 x 1080, we understand, it's an unusual resolution, and there are far more normalized resolutions to support. That being said though, if you offer it as an option, we do expect it to work.Griping aside, today's review is of the 2014 blockbuster FPS, Call of Duty: Ghosts by Infinity Ward / Activision. Steam Description: Outnumbered and outgunned, but not outmatched. Call of Duty®: Ghosts is an extraordinary step forward for one of the largest entertainment franchises of all-time. This new chapter in the Call of Duty® franchise features a new dynamic where players are on the side of a crippled nation fighting not for freedom, or liberty, but simply to survive. Now obviously we have played this game more in the past (entirely on console as it was one of those games that came out for the PS3 and Xbox 360, and offered an upgrade to the PS4/Xbox One systems); however, the PC version is what provided us the experience and knowledge of what a VAC Ban was on Steam, and how there is nothing you can do to fight it / reverse it. This is the second Call of Duty review we have done, and unlike the first, we are not able to do a review on the multiplayer PC community, as it no longer operates for us.Anyways, saltiness aside, welcome back to the Never Ending Backlog, thanks for joining us.Important Links:Developer Website: https://www.infinityward.com/homePublisher Website: https://www.activision.com/homeSteam Store: https://store.steampowered.com/app/209160/Call_of_Duty_Ghosts/

Though this episode was slated to be Back To The Future Episode Two; we have decided that it would be best to play Episode One all the way through; that way we have a better experience since we do have Episodes Three, Four, and Five as well, on the horizon. We are thinking we can do a Back To The Future week on the Never Ending Backlog, and that would be entertaining for us as well.In the meantime though, we needed another unplayed and unreviewed game title that started with the letter B. Next on the list, the medieval themed, unicycling, balancing, jousting game, Balancelot; created by the Finland-based, indie game developer studio, Jestercraft.Steam Description: Use your controller or keyboard to balance the clumsy but fully functional unicycle. Thrust the threatening mythical monsters with your sharpened lance as they sit on your way to glory. Climbing over the dead enemies with your unicycle may be the last climb you take. This game was actually pretty fun to play, and although it was extremely frustrating nearly the entire time; it wasn't because it performed poorly. In fact, it performed exactly as you expected it to, which was even more frustrating since it is a challenging time-suck type of game (sometimes you need those mindless games). Overall, there are a lot of neat things covered in this game, and it contains items that we have researched in the past in higher-academia settings. Without spoiling the podcast in the description, join us as we travel back in time to play Balancelot.Important Links:Developer Website: https://www.jestercraft.com/Steam Store: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1035850/Balancelot/

On today's episode of the Never Ending Backlog, we are reviewing ACE Team's, mature adventure, side-scrolling platformer, Abyss Odyssey.Abyss Odyssey is one of those games we have seen many times when scrolling through our game collection; however, we had assumed it was an entirely different type of game. We assumed it was an indie title (which it is); however, we expected a small budget development, that might have been neglected over the years. Fortunately, we were absolutely wrong. Abyss Odyssey offers a Castlevania'like experience, that performs quite well (with a controller).Steam Description:From indie Chilean developer ACE Team comes a new side-scrolling action adventure game featuring a complex fighting engine in procedurally generated levels that destines its three warriors to battle a different abyss each time! There are quite a few mechanics involved with this game, and button combos that unfortunately struggle on a keyboard/mouse. One quick glance at the reviews, and you will notice that it wasn't the smoothest experience for players; however, as we have been using our Steam Controller, our experience has been significantly different. Less than an hour of game time, and we have officially beat the game. Granted, that seems less impressive when you realize there is only a single level, and this is primarily a marketing stunt; however, it was still fun, and worthy of a review.Steam Description:The death of the of the Tojo Clan's third Chairman has plunged the organization into chaos. The violence spreads to the streets, and only Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima can put an end to the bloodshed!Technically we got that description from Fandom’s website; as the original Steam Store listing has already been removed (this beating the game achievement is looking less impressive with every sentence), since this game is no longer available for a free download. Welcome back to the Never Ending Backlog podcast! Today Zach is reviewing the 2007, racing simulator, Race 07, made by SimBin (now Sector3). Purchased many years ago and is one of the earlier entries in Zach's backlog, Race 07 was actually shelved as a result of purchasing Dirt Showdown and other more "simpler" racing games; but, this week Race 07 was dusted off and given the proper review it deserves! Brief Description from Steam:RACE 07 - The Official WTCC Game features the full FIA WTCC season of 2007 including all cars and tracks, as well as several new support classes and tracks from all over the world. The game also features the full WTCC season of 2006 which was included in the games predecessor RACE - The WTCC Game, released in 2006 on PC.As a group who does not follow professional racing, we really couldn't tell you what all of that means. What we can tell you is that for a game that is 13 years old (at time of recording), it worked pretty well on modern technology and featured a few nice UI/UX moments that other game developers should attempt to replicate. But that's enough yapping, let's jump in the seat, strap on the harness, and get ready to do some laps on this episode of the Never Ending Backlog podcast!Important Links:Sector3 Website: https://www.sector3studios.com/Steam Store: https://store.steampowered.com/app/8600/RACE_07/

No, that title is not my wavering doubts of some of the rough games that are in my future, no, those are hidden away from public.Today's game is titled, I Have No Idea What I'm Doing Prototype, or IHNIWIDP for short? This game is actually pretty awesome and it's a fun VR party game which is pretty rare in the marketplace (especially since it doesn't require more than one VR headset), and it has an even cooler story about how it was developed. If you're a fan of software/game development, and hack'o'thons, then we think you will enjoy this episode; for reference, the game is included in the Amnesia Fortnight bundle, and you will learn why.Happy Friday everyone, and welcome again to the Never Ending Backlog podcast.Steam Description:Amnesia Fortnight is a two week game jam during which anyone at Double Fine can pitch an idea and, if it’s selected, lead a team to turn it from concept to working prototype. This documentary series is the ultimate record of that event, as project leads succeed or fail to bring their games to life.Important Links:Developer Website:http://presents.doublefine.com/Steam Store: https://store.steampowered.com/app/631780/
