This summer, the good folks over at Indie Cup once again asked three podcasters known for opining at length on the subject of indie games to be jurors at their festival, and once again Liam, Rachel, and Rebecca were all too happy to take part. This time was a little different, however, as instead of the UK having a branch of the festival all to itself like last year, for 2024 Indie Cup held one big festival encompassing all of Europe! Even though we were only jurors in one category (Critics' Choice, thanks so much again to the organisers for putting far more faith in the professionalism of our opinions than we sometimes do ourselves!), we still looked at literally hundreds of games over the course of the summer — and, now that the results are in, we've gathered together to discuss some of our personal highlights from the festival. We begin our debriefing, as is only right and fair, with the winner of the Indie Cup Europe '24 Critics' Choice Award and the only double-winner in this year's festival: the very deserving Phonopolis, a charming and visually striking dystopian resistance puzzle game by Amanita Design. We're all genuinely delighted it won, especially since it was the only game we were all equally taken with when playing through this year's shortlist. We then move on to some worthy runners-up from our category's shortlist: retro-stylised gardening horror Grunn, surreal-yet-wholesome exploration puzzler Henry Halfhead, toy-themed musical sandbox Oddada, historical courtroom mystery based on true events The Darkest Files, and interactive historical fiction drama Two Falls (Nishu Takuatshina). Finally, we dedicate a little time to just a few of the many games from the Critics' Choice Award longlist that didn't make the final cut, but which at least one of us would have loved to see make it into the final round, including Aquapark Tycoon, Fruitbus, KreatureKind, Nurikabe World, and Sulfur. Onto hyperfixations and Rachel has been playing The Iron Rig, the latest DLC addition to this podcast's collective 2023 GOTY Dredge, and yup it sure is more Dredge — what more could you ask for? Liam has, if you can believe it, read yet another sad book: Erasure by Percival Everett, best known now as the basis for the Oscar-winning movie American Fiction. (Word of warning: American Fiction is a comedy; Erasure is… decidedly not.) Rebecca, who really shouldn't be allowed to drive this thing because it clearly sends her on a power trip, quickly shouts out American Vandal on Netflix and the forthcoming Ace Attorney Investigations Collection before getting down to her real latest hyperfixation: The Tomb Raider Compendium, a doorstopper collected edition of early-2000s comic books she spent over a decade trying to get hold of, before finally becoming the proud owner of a copy this week. Esta semana Fandango1 te cuenta que terminó el Blue Dragon, arrancó Final Fantasy VII Intergrade y su Gwent, y volvió a caer en el Football Manager con Calaveras de Pehuajó, mientras que Fandango2 se llevó una grata sorpresa con Yoku's Island Express. Some of what we discuss is hearsay (because we're bad at the game) and some of it is grammatical. (No, we do not finally solve the apostrophe thing.) Next, we swing to the far opposite side of the mood spectrum with Astro Bot Rescue Mission from Fangamer. Kenneth CM Young brings forward his experience with completely joyful games like LittleBigPlanet to make even the darkest moments of Astro Bot colorful and adorned with blinky digital eyes. We discuss Sony's relative success of using pack-in games to demonstrate new tech functions in a way that rivals or even surpasses Nintendo. We stop short of singing the praises of Astro's Playroom, which is not yet on vinyl... but we will bide our time. Äntligen tar vi oss an ett spel från tjeckiska Amanita Design, studion bakom bland annat det mästerliga Machinarium. Pilgrims är ett litet men ack så Amanita design-igt spel. Leo, Oliver och Alex klarade spelet på lite olika sätt och lyckas prata om ett 1-2 timmar långt spel i 1-2 timmar. Prata spel! So we ran into some audio issues after half an hour. I had to delete some minutes of the original recording but it's not like there was a lot of crucial stuff going on in those minutes anyways. In one case I had to include some sentences during editing, you'll hear it. My clothes are nothing to write home about but the dude from my game (Samorost 3, Tomáš Dvořák aka Floex, Amanita Design, 2016) is going full hipster wearing a white onesie with a bobble cap. Tripple K delivers, as usual, wearing a shirt with a fake GameBoy printed on the breast pocket, the connection of which to his selection (the 1978 Zombie classic Dawn of the Dead by George A. Romero with a soundtrack by the band Goblin and some creative choices done by Dario Argento for the release in Europe) didn't yet become clear to me. No bonus outtakes this time since I drank a little less and thus messed less with the buttons. Enjoy!
Poprvé jsem jeho jméno zaznamenal ve výčtu hostů na albu Futuretro od Tata Bojs a pak jsem se s ním setkával čím dál častěji. Svou hudbou tvoří unikátní světy. Každý jeden se svou vlastní poetikou a pravidly a ze všech dohromady by se dal vybudovat úplně celý paralelní vesmír. A upřímně říkám, že bych se v takovém vesmíru pohyboval velice rád. Floex mi to naštěstí svou tvorbou umožňuje. Floex je skladatel a multiinstrumentalista, známý především skládáním hudby k počítačovým hrám z produkce Amanita Design, ale stejně důležitá je i jeho autorská tvorba. Je jedním z nejprodávanějších českých umělců v zahraničí a letos mu na značce Minority Records vyšel soundrack ke hře Papetura polského vývojáře Tomasze Ostafina. Ještě letos na podzim také vyjde soundtrack k filmu Je Suis Karl, krerý měl premieru na letošním Berlinale. Pusťte si náš nový podcast.

Při této příležitosti vydává studio speciální remixové album skladeb z produkce Tomáše Dvořáka alias Floexe. Na Machinarium Remixed se podílelo třeba legendární elektronické duo Orbital, ale také jména známá z jiných herních soundtracků.

S Questem jsme tentokrát zamířili na třeboňský festival Anifilm a vyzpovídali tam zakladatele Amanity Jakuba Dvorského. Popovídali jsme si o tom, čemu se věnoval před založením studia, co ho nejvíc baví na nezávislém vývoji i co plánuje do budoucna.
