Our WOMEN IN HORROR MONTH Celebration continues with a look at IRIS K. SHIM's film UMMA.In UMMA, a Korean-American woman living on an isolated farm with her teenage daughter has her world turned upside down when the ashes of her abusive mother are delivered for her to bury. The longer she resists giving her Umma her final respects, the angrier Umma's spirit becomes. At first glance, UMMA is a straightforward ghost/possession story that plays with the universal fear of becoming one's parents. But lurking underneath is a complex spiderweb of generational trauma, the cycle of abuse and the uniquely Korean cultural syndrome known as Hwa-Byung.To help me navigate these dark and dangerous waters, I am delighted to have two very special guests: author and actor RORY KELSCH ("I Am Strength: Tales of Everyday Superwomen") and actor, singer and activist ERIN QUILL ("Avenue Q", "The Mikado Project).UMMA is currently available on Netflix.UMMA was written & directed by IRIS K. SHIM and stars SANDRA OH, FIVEL STEWART, DERMOT MULRONEY, MEE WAA ALANA LEE, ODEYA RUSH and TOM YI.For more information about Hwa-Byung Syndrome, check out this article from
Much to our surprise, Cooper Raiff's "Cha Cha Real Smooth" came out at the beginning of this summer, not sometime last year, and has just been shimmying under the radar as the funny, feel-good coming of age story of an up and coming motivational dancer for the local Bar Mitzvah circuit. There is surprisingly zero cringe and plenty of actressing from Leslie Mann as his nameless mother, Odeya Rush as his hometown hookup and, of course, the Mother of Tears herself Dakota Johnson, who can do no wrong, ask anyone, ask your producer. Plus, some necessary swooning over the multi-talented Raiff and love for Brad Garrett as Stepdad Greg and "Looking" alum Raul Castillo as the surprisingly gentle Joseph. We wrap things up with a Best Supporting Broadway star and the discovery of some very obscure starlets. Paul Leyden and Face2Face host David Peck talk about his laugh out loud, fun new film Chick Fight, empowerment, fighting back, losing his soul, why tuna, toast and baked beans are so important to him.TrailerAvailable On Demand and DigitalSynopsis:Chick Fight follows Anna (Malin Akerman) as she navigates a particularly challenging juncture in her life: she still hasn’t reconciled with the recent death of her adored mother, she’s just discovered that her loving and supportive father is gay (which she totally supports, but the deception cuts deep), and she accidentally burns down her uninsured coffee shop when she discovers a casually thrown joint and a spilled bottle of moonshine don’t exactly mix.Knowing Anna needs to be abruptly shaken and stirred from her deep funk, her best friend Charleen (Dulcé Sloan) takes Anna to an all women underground fight club. It's here that Anna encounters an eclectic cast of characters, including the intimidatingly perfect and most brutally efficient fighter of the club, Olivia (Bella Thorne), who quickly becomes a rival in and out of the ring. With the help of an eccentric and reclusive trainer Jack Murphy (Alec Baldwin), Anna slowly rediscovers herself, her inner strength and true purpose in the most primal of ways.About Paul:After graduating from Australia’s most prestigious drama school, NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Arts), Paul worked as an actor in many lead roles in both mini-series and television. As a screenwriter, he co-wrote and co-produced the Joel Silver/Dark Castle produced ‘The Factory’, a dark psychological thriller starring John Cusack and Jennifer Carpenter. For the final regular...er...full length episode of the year, Brenna and Joe embrace the festivities of the season with a trip to Starbucks and a dip into 2008's Let It Snow, the trio of novellas by Maureen Johnson, John Green, and Lauren Myracle. We're also checking out the 2019 adaptation by Luke Snellin, which coincidentally stars every teen actor under contract on a Netflix series.Up for discussion: which of the three novellas does Brenna *strongly* dislike and what makes it far less successful than the other two (A: Addie & Starbucks)? A debate whether this is the most slight book we've ever covered and why the film fails in its ambition to be a YA Love, Actually. Also: the laughable snow, the logistics of animal adoption and a serious discussion on ableism. STARBUCKS. In homework: Brenna asks for some holiday cheer in the form of reviews, while Joe circles back around to explain why Greta Gerwig's 2019 adaptation of Little Women may be the best interpretation yet.Wanna connect with the show? The Bachelors stars JK Simmons as Bill, a calculus teacher who is still reeling from the death of his beloved wife, and mother to their son Wes (Josh Wiggins). The film opens with Bill at his son’s bedside, explaining they need to make a change. So they pick up their life and move to Los Angeles where they begin anew at a private school run by Bill’s old friend, Paul (Kevin Dunn). Bill and Wes both welcome new women into their lives in the form of Julie Delpy’s French teacher, Carine, and a damaged recluse in Odeya Rush's Lacy. Bill struggles to move on with his life, while Wes desperately wants to live again, and both women play a part in waking them each up to letting go of the past and embracing the moment. The Bachelors is a very sweet film that takes a look at what happens when two people lose the most important person in their lives. It’s about grief, love, loss, and life. For this exclusive interview, writer and director Kurt Voelker stops by to discuss his latest film, why the topic spoke to him, keeping grief grounded, and how he came into the stellar cast that makes up his film. The Bachelors is now available On Demand and in select theaters. Heimkinostart: 05.02.2015 (Studiocanal) Drama, Science Fiction Land: USA 2014 Laufzeit: ca. 98 min. FSK: ab 12 Regie: Phillip Noyce Drehbuch: Michael Mitnick, Robert B.
