Celia Berk on How and Why Women Need to Take Smart Risks

Celia Berk didn’t set out to be a corporate executive. In fact, she moved to New York City thinking “Broadway” more than “Boardroom.” But, she quickly learned that breaking into showbiz was really hard and she actually loved working in an office. Thus began her career as an “accidental HR executive.” Through her early jobs, Celia learned what she liked about work and what she was good at. Upon landing at Reuters in 1987, she climbed the ladder of HR-adjacent roles till she became the SVP of organizational development. Her rise didn’t follow a traditional career ladder but in retrospect, as every step involved HR and talent work. That’s why she pivoted to HR at Burson-Marsteller (BM) and then Young & Rubicam (Y&R). It was at this point that Celia also decided it was time to turn her “singing hobby” into a full-fledged part of her professional life. Although hesitant at first, Celia has learned how to balance these two very different parts of her life/career. Listen in to Your Career, Your Terms®: Pivot Points® as Celia shares her best advice how and why women need to take smart risks. Celia explains that it’s important to not hold yourself to an unrealistic standard of perfection when taking risks. Born in India, Sarita Nayyar found that not having a brother was the best thing that could have happened to her. The youngest of three girls, she was raised more like a son. That helped her forge a path that led her to study in the US and then land a coveted spot in brand management at Kraft Foods. After more than 20 years at Kraft, where she ended up running billion dollar+ businesses, she decided that rather than relocate her family, she would re-create her career and joined the World Economic Forum (perhaps more commonly known as the folks that put on the annual meeting of world leaders in Davos, Switzerland).  True to form, her hard work and keen intellect landed her the top spot at WEF US a few years later. Listen in to hear how she successfully transitioned from India to America, school to work, and corporate to non-profit, all while being a multi-cultural woman most often surrounded by Caucasian men.
