Making History Move: Five Principles of the Historical Film (Rutgers UP, 2024) builds upon decades of scholarship investigating history in visual culture by proposing a methodology of five principles to analyze history in moving images in the digital age. It charts a path to understanding the form of history with the most significant impact on public perceptions of the past. The book develops insights across these fields, including philosophical considerations of film and history, to clarify the form and function of history in moving images. It addresses the implications of the historical film on public historical consciousness, presenting criteria to engage and assess the truth status of depictions of the past. Each chapter offers a detailed aspect of this methodology for analyzing history in moving images. Unfolding amid an atmosphere of profound anxiety and disillusionment, the new American war film demonstrates a breakdown of the prevailing cultural narratives that had come to characterize conflict in the previous century. In the wake of 9/11, both the nature of military conflict and the symbolic frameworks that surround it have been dramatically reshaped. The New American War Film charts society's shifting attitudes toward violent conflict and what is broadly considered to be its acceptable repercussions. Drawing attention to changes in gender dynamics and the focus on war's lasting psychological effects within films such as The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty, Eye in the Sky, American Sniper, and others, author Robert Burgoyne analyzes how cinema both reflects and reveals the makeup of the national imaginary.Robert Burgoyne taught film studies for several decades at Wayne State University and at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. As we are living through a pandemic, we are also experiencing an "info-demic" of misinformation regarding epidemiology. Public health strategies can build a safety net that brings care to every sector of our communities. Our guests, Kim Nelson and Dr. Eric Brenner, conclude their conversation about how trends in public health are measurably improving our lives.

In most developed countries, public health gets taken for granted. We don't often consider the social, financial or medical influences to our health ... until something goes wrong. Yet this year, we have all experienced effects of a pandemic, and communities are relying heavily on the power of public health experts. What are some of the key factors that support vital health congruence in our public arenas? How can the public health narratives of the past direct our current practices? Our guests, Dr. Eric Brenner of the University of South Carolina and Kim Nelson, a public health advocate, share insight into the stories of epidemiology.

If the phrase “home-based fitness” makes you think of DVDs and ellipticals collecting dust in the corner, you haven’t met a Peloton owner. The internet-connected spin bike has reached almost cultish status in very quick time, but is it worth the hype (and price tag)? Oh wow, I say that The Skewer had one of its best shows ever every month, and that's because it's always true, but this month it was EXTRA true. I was honored to host this truly stellar night of comedy & satire, with a searing essay about the political power of art by Skewer co-producer erica dreisbach, a personal account of the unifying power of the eclipse by Kim Nelson, a meditation on the effect of the DACA repeal on a 1.5th generation media journalist from Danette Chavez, a haunting love letter to the maybe-to-be-hit-by-Hurricane-Irma state of South Carolina by Mary Tilden, and one of the most outrageous Skewer debates EVER between Ashley Ray and Ray Goldberg to determine if America's next atomic lover should be Russia or North Korea. Kevin K. Johnson also killed it hosting the Skewer's Fake News game, proving once again that real news is just as horrifying and disheartening as shit he made up. Ah geez but this was a fun night. Susan Daffron talks to Kim Nelson, the foster mom of a cat named Camden who is available from the Partnership for Animal Welfare in Maryland. Camden was one of a group of cats that were rescued from a semi-feral colony. He has completely adjusted to being an indoor cat and hanging out with people. In fact, he pretty much thinks people, his foster mom's small dog, and other cats are great and enjoys being in the middle of the household "action" wherever that might be. Camden is extremely social and loves to roll around and purr while getting scratched and petted. He is a gorgeous soft gray color with striking tabby markings and beautiful eyes. Camden is one one of those cats that is curious about everything, so he'd do best in a home that is "cat friendly" so he doesn't get into anything he shouldn't. He is neutered, up to date with all his shots, and ready for a new loving forever home.
