Co-hosts Toben Racicot (English Language and Literature) and Sid Heeg (Environment) interview Dr. Luke Potwarka (Recreation and Leisure) and Greg Mittler (Athletics and Recreation). Together they are the founders of UWIN aka the University of Waterloo Interdisciplinary Network for Esports. Sid and Toben chat with Greg and Luke about Esports sustainability, the possible inclusion of Esports in the Olympics, and their recent trip to the University of Warwick for future collaborative research efforts on Esports development and research. Bios Dr. Luke R. Potwarka Associate Professor in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies in the Faculty of Health Sciences and Director of the Spectator Experience and Technology Laboratory aka the SEAT Lab. His research involved thinking critically about sports spectatorship and consumer behaviour and wellbeing. Greg Mittler is the Esports and Gaming Coordinator in the Department of Athletics and Recreation and an alumnus of Waterloo's Recreation and Business program. Greg has been involved in many parts of Camps and Athletics at UW for almost 20 years. Shownotes SEAT LAB: “Our international team of researchers investigate the role of sport spectator experiences in the promotion of individual health and well-being. To achieve this goal, we employ various technologies as both a methodology (e.g., social neuroscience, eye-tracking, second screens, etc), and a means of experiencing sport events (e.g., virtual reality, augmented reality, mobile devices). Our lab's current work focuses on developing a better understanding of the sport consumer experience using social neuroscience methodology. We are interested in addressing the extent to which brain system activation can predict engagement (i.e., flow) and involvement in the sport viewership experience.” UWIN's Mission: “The mission of our proposed network is to strengthen esports-related scholarship, teaching/learning, and student experiences at the University of Waterloo. We will advance this mission through socially just and equity-oriented approaches, which seek to make esports more accessible and inclusive spaces for all. Our mission will consider esports from a holistic wellbeing perspective, with considerations for potential physical, mental, social, and emotional benefits and harms of esports to participants and communities.”

Episode 66. “Sometime the things that we thought are good for us may not be good in the long term. Those are the moments when those things are happening (and) you will feel catastrophic loss and all those kind of things. Then later on if you look back, you say, “Oh, that wasn't good for me and it's a blessing that I came out of it, better and wiser.”Dr. Rehnuma Karim grew up in Bangladesh and majored in Economics but decided to change her track when she came to pursue her Ph.D in the field of Environment and Leisure Studies at Penn State. She was a full time faculty at SUNY Brockport but after 2015, she became an adjunct faculty and started her own non-profit, Heroes for All, both in NY and in Bangladesh. She is also co-host of the Limitless Leadership Lounge Podcast and is working on a book with Coach Jim Johnson.Dr. Karim shares her heroes journey with Linda:- “I'm watching this movie, Batman, when Batman was saying “What do I do? I cannot rise. Why do we fall?" And then Alfred says, “We fall because the universe wants to see how you rise again.” It just resonated.- “I think faith really helped me so I knew that no matter what, everything happens for a reason and I will be coming out of it. So usually faith, family, and friends. And when you have a meaning to what you are doing, that is what can lift you up.” - “There were neighbors who would come to my mom and complain. It looks odd, a girl hanging around and playing in the streets. But my mom and dad, they were very progressive, especially my dad. He said that it's her life. I don't see her as a girl or a boy. She's a human and she can do whatever she loves to do.” - “My dissertation was on acid attack victims, victims who were thrown acid at their face and how they even coped after such a tragedy. When I was doing the interview, I found out those girls are filled with life and some of them were saying that they knew more about life after the tragedy happened. And if it didn't happen, they wouldn't know that they had the power to make a difference.”To find her podcast, Limitless Leadership Lounge. CW - LanguageWhile I was getting my Masters in Tourism and Hospitality Management at Temple University, I had a graduate externship with Student Activities. These roles were offered as 20 hour a week paid positions for full time graduate students throughout the university. My role was to oversee all of the Student Organizations on campus. You'll hear more about this later on this season when I interview a former student leader. My second year of grad school I would share my office with the new Greek Life graduate extern, this week's guest, Dr. Ben Torsney. This 24 year old kid showed up from Pittsburgh to get his Masters in Education. We joke, but in all seriousness, we probably wouldn't have been friends had we not been paired together, but our friendship was meant to be. Even though I'm older than Ben, we both had a LOT of growing up to do that year, and I know we really helped each other achieve that goal. Ben and I have remained friends over the years, and as you learned in his partner Lauryn's episode, he, Lauryn and I spent almost every Saturday “virtually” together on the same quizzo team from March 2020 until the Spring of 2021.You'll hear in this episode how Ben had reached out to me last summer about my graduate thesis. He thought I asked an interesting question about people's motivation to attend beer festivals. He himself also studies motivation, so with a little work, Ben and his colleague co-authored my now published paper “Ticket to Intoxication: Exploring Attendees' Motivations for Attending Craft Beer Events” in the Journal of Leisure Studies.Additional Topics Include:

She has been leading programs for older adults for 18years. Jessica enjoys bringing purpose, passion and a sense of playfulness to programming for people of all ages. Key Takeaways Play has lifelong value. Incorporating aspects of play into physical fitness programs for seniors has been shown to improve energy levels. Senior living communities can build connection through humor and shared laughter. Laughter has multiple benefits including improving immunity, elevating mood, and relieving pain. Play can seem dignified or not age appropriate to older people. Avoid childish toys and supplies, choosing adult materials for art projects and exercise programs. Bring in elements of play through fun music or wearing bright colors. It could be as simple as wearing a pair of crazy socks. A lot of planning goes into creating meaningful experiences. The position of Activities Director has been elevated to Program Directors and Life Enrichment Directors.

In this episode we have one of the absolute living legends of psychology on the show - we discuss the GREATEST unanswered question in psychology, the biggest thing people mis-understand about flow, what advice young people can take away from our guest's incredible career, and what he thinks the absolute biggest takeaways from his own research are - and much more with Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. Your fate, your destiny, your future is not set out for you - you can shape it to be what you want it to be. You have the freedom to make life better for yourself and more worthwhile and meaningful for yourselves. Even the greatest traumas and struggles can be overcome. You don’t have to achieve fame and fortune to live a meaningful and wonderful life and to be truly alive. Mihaly is Claremont Graduate University’s Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Management. He is a bestselling author and founder and co-director of the Quality of Life Research Center. He is a member of the American Academy of Education, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the National Academy of Leisure Studies and his work has been featured on NPR,TED, WIRED, and more!! The key ideas supported by the data around how people respond to Trauma. People who are focused beyond themselves and their own wellbeing are more resilient to the things that happen to them. When you focus on the wellbeing of others, society, your family, etc - you’re much more resilient to Trauma How do you think of yourself? Do you think of yourself as the body in which you live? Do you see yourself as being part of a family, group, religion etc? This will shape your response to trauma. The self is a very poor site for meaning - don’t put all your eggs in the fragile basket of the self We are all connected - recognizing that helps contextualize our existence Flow and happiness are not the same thing - but they are very related Flow is a momentary state of experience and happiness is a general perspective towards life If your life is full of flow - it will be a happy life! How do we consistently create flow states in our lives? If you have those 2 traits you are more likely to be in flow more often Pay attention to the world around you and connect with it one way or another Life is quite malleable - we often feel like we’ve been dealt a tough hand, but its often how we react to it that is the most important How does Mihaly think about creating flow states in his own life? What is the greatest unanswered question in psychology today? What is the biggest mistake or pitfall that younger people (in their mid 20s) can make? You have to keep an open mind, be open to learning Don’t be too instinctive, don’t become an ideologue too soon What’s the biggest thing that people misunderstand about Flow and Mihay’s research? We have the opportunity to shape ourselves into whoever we want to be- but we have to take into account where we came from and what our experiences have been. What’s the biggest takeaway from all the research on Flow? Your fate, your destiny, your future is not set out for you - you can shape it to be what you want it to be. You have the freedom to make life better for yourself and more worthwhile and meaningful for yourselves. Even the greatest traumas and struggles can be overcome. You don’t have to achieve fame and fortune to live a meaningful and wonderful life and to be truly alive. It may not be an easy road to get there, but it’s possible for anyone to get there. This is open to everyone, but it’s hard to do the work and get there. Life can be much more fun than you think! We have to look past the limited perspective of our own egos and experiences to understand the beauty of life.
Today’s episode of Open Space Radio is a special one because it is officially our 50th episode! It was hard to imagine having 50 episodes when we launched two years ago, but we’re here and we’re thriving. Open Space Radio has consistently been in the Apple charts for non-profit podcasts, and often in the top ten! The timing of our 50th episode is pretty appropriate. We just got back from the 2019 NRPA Annual Conference in Baltimore, and it was amazing to meet so many of our listeners and chat with those of you who have never even heard of the show. We were thrilled to get some of you on the mic, and we’re looking forward to sharing the great answers to six questions we asked people who stopped by the Open Space Radio booth. So, thank you to everyone who visited us and thank you for listening — whether this is your 50th episode or your first — we really appreciate you tuning in. And since it’s our 50th episode and we’ve been reflecting on when we first started, we thought it would be appropriate to use this episode to explore one of the questions we asked while we were in Baltimore: What piece of advice would you give to your younger self? Tune in to the show below to hear the sage advice from the following people who were brave enough to get on the mic with us: Stacie Anaya, Director, City of Lewisville Parks and Recreation Department Anthony Iracki, MS, CPRP, Recreation Supervisor, Whitefish Bay Recreation Brissa Ibarra, California State University, East Bay Beeg Johnson, Recreation Director, City of Eagle Parks, Pathways & Recreation Tony Phillips, Director, City of South Fulton Parks and Recreation Donna Lindenmeier, Associate Professor of Recreation and Leisure Studies, Oklahoma State University Gabriel Passos, Aquatics Recreation Programmer II, Stafford County Parks and Recreation Jenny Cox, Conservation Program Manager, NRPA Tom Ellis, CPRP, Parks Superintendent, Oro Valley Parks and Recreation And of course, we couldn’t have a 50th episode celebration without sharing some of our own advice that we would tell our younger selves, like making sure to make yourself proud first and the importance of stepping outside of your comfort zone. To finish out our celebration, we have officially launched an Instagram just for the podcast. So be sure to follow us @openspaceradio and say hi, tell us your ideas for future episodes and tag us in photos of you listening to the podcast! You can also send feedback or episode ideas to openspace@nrpa.org, and we’ll send you an Open Space Radio sticker! Again, a huge thank you to everyone who sat down with us at the 2019 NRPA Annual Conference and thank you to everyone who has listened and helped us get to 50 episodes. We could not have done it without all our amazing past guests, listeners and colleagues at NRPA who support Open Space Radio!

One might think that an undergrad degree in Leisure Studies wouldn’t lead to much more than a couch. That is certainly not the case for Justin Harmon. Sure the years right after graduation were a bit on the lackadaisical side of life, he was working, but he was more focused on the living. It wasn’t until the end of his masters that he found his calling and a way to turn a love of music into a study of culture.
Tara and Steve probe leisure studies, exploring the transformations to work and education. Particularly, we explore the changes to leisure studies and its ambivalent relationship with physical cultural studies.
Tara and Steve talk about two key phrases - "digital leisure cultures" and "digital leisure studies." What are digital leisure cultures and can they offer a new disciplinary pathway through work, production and consumption?
