Welcome back to the She's Wild Podcast. Today's guest is Jessica Abramson, Senior Development Manager at Stiles Corporation. Jessica is an owner representative on retail real estate development projects. She focuses on project planning and coordination, due diligence, obtaining government approvals, budgeting, and scheduling. She's worked with numerous clients including Publix, The Fresh Market, Trader Joe's, Ross, Five Below, Planet Fitness, Rooms to Go, Chase Bank, SunTrust Bank, Chipotle, and Starbucks. Jessica is active in the Urban Land Institute's Southeast Florida Region serving on the Florida Retail Project Council, is a graduate of Leadership Broward Class XXXIV, and is active on the Advisory Board for the NSU MSRED program and Alumni Association. In this episode, Jessica and I discuss her career and why she loves working in development. She offers insight on 5 skills she thinks are critical for success as a commercial real estate developer. She also offers a ton of advice if you are new to the business. Memorable Moments: 19:11  Skills to be successful in development include technical skills such as analyzing financials. But it's also negotiating and influencing others. If you're working with a team and you need to influence them to work on your project to get things done. You might work with an architect who has 10 projects, you need to know how to make that person feel like yours is the most important. And then the other skill is to strategically think about problem solving. You're either trying to prevent a problem or you're trying to solve a problem. 19:52. Thinking outside of the box and understanding what to do to make everybody satisfied or to get this done or to get past this hurdle and then getting your team on board to come up with a solution or to agree with what you think the solution might be. Our job is just to, to keep the project moving. And we might have, a large team and that might also include government officials who don't always have the same priorities that you have. 30:56  If you are a young person getting into the business, milk the student card, as much as you can, even if just say, hey, I'm new to the business call people you want to talk to almost anybody will talk to you for a little while, or have a phone conversation or talk to you at a networking event. Because once you get you know, many years into the business, it's a lot harder to to use that card. 31:18  Young professionals should attend every networking event possible. Introduce yourself, make connections. And then as you're doing that, learn about different career paths. Talk to as many people as you can as possible early on in your career.Connect with Nancy:Instagram: https://instagram.com/nancysurakLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nancysurak/Website: www.nancysurak.comConnect with Jessica:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jessica-abramson-68003a19/Twitter: @Jejoly619Jessica's Book Recommendation:Risk Game by Francis J. He traveled the world with his family, growing up in the UAE, Egypt, Oman, and Europe before moving back to the United States at age 16. Ahmed still maintains his love of travel to this day. He graduated from Georgia State University with a BS in Computer Informations Systems. He has 20 years' experience in the industry working for such companies as Coca Cola, Turner Broadcasting, Netroadshow, NCR, and RDA. He is currently a Senior Development Manager at Safe-Guard International in Atlanta, GA. In his free time, he enjoys riding motorcycles, traveling the world, photography, digital art, and enjoying technical blogs.   Chat Highlights What is the secret sauce that makes a great software development team and what is your responsibility as a leader to foster these conditions? How do you create a flexible work culture (a change from the “typical” 9-5 schedule) while getting things done and ensuring that your team is accountable for what they need to deliver on their projects? How do you approach delivering feedback to your team members, course correcting, and aligning (or re-aligning) them into better positions that leverage their strengths? How do you drive a team culture where healthy conflict, open debate, and sharing opinions openly is not only safe but encouraged? When you reflect on the following recommendation from a former direct report, what sense of pride around this accomplishment should you feel as a leader? Ahmed is, hands down, the best manager that I have ever had the honor to work within my career. He is incredibly driven and passionate about his work and has never hesitated to give 120% of himself when the need arises. His technical skills are incredibly sound, covering a wide range of technologies and architectures, and he has a knack for pushing the products he's responsible for to the next level of innovation. More important than his work, however, is the way he treats his team. Day or night, seven days a week, Ahmed has been there to help us out, give us feedback, and help drive us to be better in everything we do. I have seen him give up countless evenings and weekends to help his team through tough times, and he never hesitates to drop everything he's doing to lend a listening ear. He is always in the trenches with us...which is a quality that is increasingly rare in today's job market. Ahmed is an incredible mentor to me...someone who has helped me spread my wings, and who has made me a better person by knowing him. For a technical leader...and for someone who truly cares about the people he works with...you will find no one better. What makes keeping up with bleeding-edge technology and being an effective techncial team manager so complicated?   Get In Touch Ahmed Gadir Connect with Ahmed at linkedin.com/in/ahmedgadir See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Talk about being ambitious!  22:10 Too early IoT mover   Morten Nielsen, adm. dir., Hounö  Velkommen til en ”too early mover”! 33:00 All about hackathons!

Frasers Perspective is a podcast series about property development, featuring the people who do it every day here at Frasers Property Australia. In our first episode host Daniel Goodfellow introduces Mark Cleveland, Senior Development Manager in Frasers Property’s retail division. “These days, we’re arriving at these centres by car and not by foot, but people are still wanting the experience of walking down a high street or a laneway… and that’s been key to everything that Frasers Property is looking at: experiential retail, but still at neighbourhood scale.” We call it the ‘super-neighbourhood’ approach: experiential centres at 10,000-30,000 sqm GFA, with a hyper-local retail mix and a bias toward entertainment and service tenants. Mark explains what’s driving this approach, and offers his perspective on the past, the present and the future of retail development in Australia with a deep dive into the planning for Eastern Creek Quarter in Sydney's west._Frasers Property Australia is a diversified property group, active in residential, retail, commercial and industrial property, right across the country. We began developing property in Australia in 1924, and today we’re part of the global Frasers Property Group, with S$33 billion in assets in more than 80 cities around the world. In Australia and across the globe, we believe ‘experience matters’, and that puts our customers at the heart of our business. _Explore our company at www.frasersproperty.com.auExplore a rich collection of insights on retail and residential development in Australia at www.frasersproperty.com.au/perspectiveConnect with Mark Cleveland at linkedin.com/in/mark-cleveland-b6251a3

JDRF for years stood for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, but in recent years we’ve learned that it is not a juvenile disease. The topic is personal for both Emma and Delilah, as they have been living with Type 1 Diabetes for 15 years, and they will participate in the Beat The Bridge run coming up on Sunday May 20th at Husky Stadium. (Emma was diagnosed at age 1 and Delilah as a young girl) JDRF uses the funds raised from Beat The Bridge to fund research. Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) still has no cure and it is not know what exactly causes the pancreas to quit producing insulin. If you’d like to learn more about T1D or the JDRF go online to their website www.jdrf.org and to participate in the Beat the Bridge run visit www.beatthebridge.org Once there you can support Delilah Sanabria’s Team T1E DYE, or Emma Murphy’s Emma Jane’s Gang, find someone else to support, or start your own team.

Many young people are interested in a career working on some of the toughest challenges facing our world. Thousands volunteer in development organisations across the country, and development studies and international relations are among the most popular undergraduate university courses in Australia. Working in a field that aims to make a difference is no doubt appealing, but it can be tough for students to know where to start. This public seminar, hosted by the Development Policy Centre and the ANU Aid and Development Learning Community, gave students the opportunity to hear from those working in the development sector and to ask questions. Panelists have had diverse careers in government, NGOs, the private sector, and as volunteers. This is the second year we have co-hosted this event and the podcast from the 2014 event is available here: https://soundcloud.com/devpolicy/careers-in-development
