Colman Reaboi , like Dmitri Matheny, is one of the people I have known since my Interlochen High School days. I am fifty-three now and since so much time has gone by it only makes sense that somebody of Colman's enormous talent and, above all, work ethic, would have done as many things with his abilities as he has as the decades have progressed. When last I checked in with him I was mostly familiar with his singing. But when you think about the fact that he has had careers in both opera and popular musical theatre and has entered the world of synagogues and being a cantor, even though there is the common thread of the voice it seems like a remarkable range by any estimation. As he pointed out on our episode it is most hard for a vocalist to switch from opera to popular or "Broadway" styles as the techniques are so very different. Even some fine vocalists in opera or classical never make the transition. Colman is one who has. And the fact that Colman's spiritual life has only grown as he has grown places Colman among the ranks of our multi-talented guests to be sure. As always on every one of our episodes, I learned things about Colman about which I had no knowledge whatsoever beforehand. It is one thing to encounter even someone you know, whether in passing or a scheduled meeting; a podcast episode is an other meeting entirely. It makes possible far more than could be achieved in other settings. This episode is no exception. I certainly hope you enjoy hearing what a world class vocalist, and much more, has to say as much as I enjoyed hearing him say it. My episode with Colman was a beautiful occasion.” Colman's Bio Cantor Reaboi's career has led him to serve three synagogues in Tampa Bay, Fla. In New England he served Temple Torat Yisrael in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, and Temple Tifereth Shalom in Peabody. Most recently, Cantor Reaboi served as cantor and educator for Emanuel Synagogue in Oklahoma City. Cantor Reaboi is a professionally trained spiritual leader and singer who also has extensive experience performing concerts of classical, Broadway, and Jewish repertoire. “As a Spiritual Leader, I strive to help connect Jews to Judaism…through study, prayer, a shared history, or a newfound identity. Whether it is connecting spiritually or culturally, Judaism offers something for everyone,” said Cantor Reboi about his new home at Ahavas Achim. “ As a human being, I desire to create connections between myself and my new community…to help strengthen the bonds that connect G-d, the Jewish people, and others from outside of Judaism who wish to be included. The Torah commands us to love the stranger in our midst.” Cantor Reaboi attended the Boston Conservatory of Music, where he majored in Vocal Performance and Opera. He is a graduate of Hebrew College in Newton, and of the Cantorial Internship program (CICA) of the Cantors Assembly. He is an alumnus and past soloist of the Zamir Chorale of Boston. He was also a guest cantor for the Prague Jewish Community, where he conducted services, performed concerts, and lectured at the Prague Jewish Museum. More highlights about Cantor Reaboi: Spiritual Leader at Congregation Ahavas Achim, Westfield, MA and works at Jewish Chaplain at Westfield State University and Enrichment Instructor, 4th Grade Teacher, Holocaust studies teacher at Temple Shir Tikva A link to a wonderful story featuring Colman's beautiful work with the community during Hanukkah 2020/Covid-19 : https://www.wwlp.com/news/local-news/hampden-county/hanukkah-celebration-continues-in-westfield/ More links to Colman's Beautiful Work Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/creaboi Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/colmanreaboi/ --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mitch-hampton/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mitch-hampton/support

The night of May 25, 2020 changed America. George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, was killed during an arrest in Minneapolis when a white cop suffocated him. The video of that night’s events went viral, sparking the largest protests in the nation’s history and the sort of social unrest we have not seen since the sixties. While Floyd’s death was certainly the catalyst, many believe it was the fuse that lit a powder keg that has been filling since America’s promising but perilous beginning. Now, public intellectual Michael Eric Dyson joined us in conversation with academic and author Robin DiAngelo with a necessary discussion that grapples with the cultural and social forces that have shaped our nation in the brutal crucible of race. Drawing on his book Long Time Coming: Reckoning with Race in America, Dyson examined the cultural imperatives of Black death, the plague of police brutality, the white theft of Black bodies and opportunities, and the craving for white comfort that has too often cost Black people their lives. He traced the genealogy of anti-Blackness from the slave ship to the street corner where Floyd lost his life—and where America gained its will to confront the ugly truth of systemic racism. With an urgent guide to help America finally reckon with race, Dyson presents a poignant plea for hope, and points the way to social redemption. Michael Eric Dyson is one of America’s premier public intellectuals and the author of seven New York Times bestsellers. He is a Distinguished University Professor of African American and Diaspora Studies and of Ethics and Society at Vanderbilt University, where he is also Centennial Professor. A contributing opinion writer for The New York Times, Dr. Dyson is a recipient of two NAACP Image Awards, and the 2020 Langston Hughes Festival Medallion. Robin DiAngelo is an academic, lecturer, and author, and has been a consultant and trainer on issues of racial and social justice for more than twenty years. She formerly served as a tenured professor of multicultural education at Westfield State University. Instead, we move faster on our paths' of spiritual development by maintaining an open mind, raising our individual and collective vibrations, and, possibly most importantly, living out of our hearts. The concept of Connected goes beyond the idea that we are individually connected to source. This podcast also will focus on how we are all connected as a collective, human consciousness; and under the collective consciousness umbrella, we are also connected within our own soul groups. There are other types of groups as well that we will explore in future episodes, so be sure to SUBSCRIBE today! I will also provide suggestions of people (experts in their particular fields) and different types of content that my community of subscribers can "connect" with, follow, read, watch, subscribe to, etc... In the video, I also provide a few of my teachers, who I respect as experts in their field, and there will be much more to come. A few of my teachers shown in the YouTube video are Linda Goodman, Ed & Lorraine Warren, Ralph Sarchie, Kryon (channeled by Lee Carroll), Theresa Caputo, and, last but not least, Rev. Barbara Szafranski (Angelica of the Angels - Salem, MA). Much love & thanks to all of them! As the creator of Connected, I will also provide guided meditations, positive affirmations, and holistic approaches to hypnosis. Lovegood Holistic, our sister YouTube channel, will provide this content on Connected. Please Like & Subscribe to both stations as each has its own focus. Lou talks with Mr. Junior Delgado, the Director of the Career Services Center at Westfield State University in Massachusetts. Mr. Delgado explains what is entailed in the role of leading a Career Services team at a small-mid sized college/university, and how that might differ at smaller/larger institutions. He also shares his experiences as both a leader of an organization assisting graduating students as they choose career paths as well as recruiting incoming students (via athletic scholarships) as they begin their college experience. Mr. Delgado shares the rewarding aspects of the job, but also acknowledges the frustrating dynamics of competing priorities and fiscal realities that are inherent in the academic world, just as they are in the larger business world. Finally, Junior comments on the ‘calling’ and values that are essential if one is considering a role in ‘Career Services’ because it requires more of a commitment (to students’ success) than a typical 9 – 5 job. A great inside look into an aspect of a college education that is often lost in school rankings articles or the popular press.

I have been at McKenzie Capital since August 1st, 2018, where I have had the pleasure of managing the final underwriting team (5 people in total). Our job is to prevent fraud, analyze risk factors and provide great customer service. During our day-to-day functions, we complete a series of background and credit checks, analyze bank accounts, review a series of documents and contracts as well as complete remote and physical site inspections. We are the final stop before a deal is approved or denied so our role is crucial within the company. Prior to joining McKenzie Capital, I worked at the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston, where I managed a portfolio of properties within the affordable housing program. This involved ensuring that my projects were compliant with federal government regulations and requirements. I attended Westfield State University for undergraduate studies, I double majored in Geography / Regional Planning and Ethnics / Gender studies. I then went on to the University of Massachusetts, Boston where I obtained my Masters in Public Administration. My experience that last 5 years has been on Real Estate and Business Finance. During my free time, I enjoy reading, running and attending a local CrossFit gym. I also love going to the beach, which is what motivated my move from Massachusetts to Florida in 2018.

Episode 81: Return

NEXT New England

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 16, 2018 49:59

New Bedford, Massachusetts is known for its profitable fishing port. It even draws visitors by celebrating Moby Dick, a novel inspired by whalers there. But facing a crackdown on fishing by regulators, the city is starting to look at another source of revenue – offshore wind. We take a look inside the hidden, often lucrative world of Vermont sheriffs, and mourn (or celebrate??) the end of L.L. Bean's lifetime return policy. Plus: responding to racism on campus through art, and Palestinian storytellers in Boston. A man looks at a harpoon display at the New Bedford Whaling Museum (John Bender/RIPR) Keeping Tabs on the Sheriff When Attorney General Jeff Sessions at a speech to the National Sheriffs Association said “The office of sheriff is a critical part of the Anglo-American heritage of law enforcement,” he prompted many shocked observers to wonder where that leaves people of color within that heritage. It's also thrown a pretty harsh spotlight on the job of sheriff. But do you even know who your sheriff is? In 2006, an anonymous whistleblower tipped the Vermont state auditor off to financial misdeeds in the Windham County Sheriff’s Department, which was led by Sheila Prue. If you live in Connecticut, that’s a trick question! County government is nonexistent in the Nutmeg State — that’s why there are no sheriffs — but it’s not very strong in other New England states either. While Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts have elected sheriffs, their elections don’t get much attention. That lead a listener to the Vermont Public Radio podcast Brave Little State to ask: if voters aren't holding these elected officials accountable, then who is? VPR investigative reporter Emily Corwin dug in and joins us to share some surprising tales of sheriffs going bad — and virtually getting away with it. So, did that dog bed you purchased from LL Bean five years ago get chewed by its occupant? Up until last week, you could just take it back and get a replacement for no charge. But the iconic Maine company is changing its famous unconditional return policy — one that has been a part of the brand since it started more than a century ago. The change comes as a response to the growing number of customers who have been taking advantage of the policy. Maine Public Radio’s Patty Wight reports. “The Last Arrow,” by Thomas Moran, is one of the works slated for sale by the Berkshire Museum. Image courtesy of Sotheby’s And there are plenty of complaints about a deal the Massachusetts attorney general struck with Berkshire Museum. The deal allows, with some conditions, the museum to sell up to 40 works of art — including two Norman Rockwell paintings — to fund renovations and boost its endowment. A group of the museum’s members said it will press forward in a lawsuit attempting to block the sale. New England Public Radio’s Adam Frenier has more. A Maritime Past and Future in New Bedford Boats docked at the Port of New Bedford. (Lynn Arditi/RIPR) New Bedford, Massachusetts was on the front page of the New York Times this week. The headline: “A Famed Fishing Port Shudders as Its Codfather Goes to Jail.” Back in October, fishing magnate Carlos Rafael, also known as “the Codfather,” was sentenced to 46 months in federal prison for mislabeling his catch and money-laundering. But with Rafael behind bars, the men who worked for him are barred from catching groundfish with his boats. Some of Rafael's boats and permits have even been seized by regulators. And as the Times reports, the ripple effects can be felt across the usually bustling port of New Bedford, which has gone eerily quiet. Visitors listen to Moby Dick read aloud, during the annual Moby Dick Marathon at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. (John Bender/RIPR) Yet while the fishing sector sits in limbo, another industry is just gearing up off Massachusetts' South Shore — offshore wind. Right now, the Commonwealth is developing what could be the nation's first large-scale offshore wind project, and New Bedford wants to be a big part of it. Rhode Island Public Radio's environmental reporter Avory Brookins takes a look at that city's bet on offshore wind energy. In the mid 19th Century, New Bedford was one of the world’s whaling capitals. The whaling industry is long gone, but New Bedford is drawing in fans of the world most famous leviathan. RIPR’s John Bender has the story. The RIPR newsroom has been exploring New Bedford for their series “One Square Mile,” and there’s lot’s more at ripr.org. RIPR and the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth are holding a public forum on Wednesday, February 21 called “After the Codfather: The Future of New Bedford’s Fishing Industry.” Admission is free, registration required. Cultural Catharsis A painting of Trayvon Martin was part of a performance piece by Imo Nse Imeh at Westfield State University. (Jill Kaufman) NEPR An art professor recently spent four days painting a six-foot-tall portrait of Trayvon Martin, while spectators came and went. The performance took place at Westfield State University, near Springfield, Massachusetts, where last semester there were numerous reports of racist messages left around campus. New England Public Radio’s Jill Kaufman reports. Nadia Abuelezam performs on stage at “Palestinians, Live!” a night of storytelling in Cambridge, Mass, on January 28. Photo by Annie Sinsabaugh When we hear about Palestinians in the news, it's usually in the context of conflicts or negotiations with Israel. With their stories being so highly politicized, the personal narratives of Palestinians don't often make it to American ears. Nadia Abuelezam, a Palestinian-American living in the Boston area, wants to change that. In 2015, she launched an event series called Palestinians, Live! featuring true stories told on stage. The stories are later released on Palestinians Podcast, which Nadia also created.
