EP 600 Discussing Current Metal Topics and Releases
Interview aired the weekend of 9/6/24
From vacation we rise for another episode! This time, Kerry King's debut solo album From Hell I Rise!
May 17, 2024, marks the day that KERRY KING released the diabolically brutal debut, FROM HELL I RISE, forging a new chapter in thrash metal. And before you get all “skeptical” about it and start in with some snide remark like “Oh, this is just diet Slayer…”, understand that this is definitely NOT Slayer (although, it kinda is…even though it's “allegedly” not). Make no mistake, KERRY KING is not just that bald, tattooed dude from Slayer with some random backup band. In fact, KERRY KING is a legitimate thrash super group with an all-star line-up featuring members of Death Angel, Vio-Lence, and (of course) Slayer. And for a debut solo album, FROM HELL I RISE is an absolute scorcher. In short, “it's huge and big…it's bigger than huge”, and if you like Slayer and/or Vio-Lence and/or Death Angel on ANY level, you are really going to enjoy this album. Time to break out your “Jean-Claude Van Damme banned band bandana” as we unveil what the next Doomsicle cover will be (and who's gonna “dress up as Peter Criss”). Find out who 100% “allegedly” has a beef with E.T. (and will NOT be phoning home), stay away from that stuff that “beads up” and “starts getting gritty after a few whacks” and JOIN US for a trip into the aggro-thrash inferno of FROM HELL I RISE. The new music show for May 2024 explores the vast spectrum of metal, uniting classic thrash figures and modern innovators. It starts with Kerry King's "Rage," featuring Paul Bostaph and Mark Osegueda, reigniting the fervour of 1980s California thrash. NOCTURNUS AD follows with "Hod, The Stellar Light," a pinnacle of progressive occult metal from their album Unicursal. EXODUS revisits their legendary 1989 live show with "Fabulous Disaster," recorded at The Astoria in London, celebrating a key moment in thrash history. The show also includes APOCALYPTICA's symphonic take on Metallica's "One" with James Hetfield and Six Feet Under return. The episode features a variety of styles, from the gritty urban trad-metal of RIOT V's "Mean Streets" to the nostalgic rock of Lucifer's cover "I Would Follow You Babe," with heavier sounds from Daath's "Ascension." Gnarly underground stuff from Earsplit PR is a feature, and other highlights include technical displays from bands like CROWNSHIFT and Cognitive, concluding with the dynamism of MY DYING BRIDE and Melbourne's The Omnific. You know Kerry King as the legendary guitarist of what some would say are the ultimate heavy metal band, Slayer. Well a few years ago Slayer announced their retirement, they were hanging up the riffs for good. So Kerry being Kerry King took some songs he had already been working on and decided to put out a solo record. He's got a great lineup of musicians with him including Paul Bostaph of Slayer, Phil Demmel formerly of Machine Head, Kyle Sanders from Hellyeah and singing is Mark Osegueda of Death Angel. That reads like a supergroup of metal lineup, but here they are playing with Kerry King. The finished product is the album From Hell I Rise due out on May 17th. Kerry sits down with me to fill us in on how this project came out of the ashes of Slayer.I should also mention that Slayer did reunite and are playing some select festivals later this year, but how that happened will have to be saved for another conversation down the line.
--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/trascendenciave/message
This week we look to the stars for inspiration for our show theme. Oh yeah! We are talking about bands that have rock stars in them: Supergroups and Offshoots. A band consisting of well-known artists from other bands does not always equal great success. We dive into some of the more obscure supergroups and offshoots that didn't break with huge mainstream success or stay around very long. What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we talk exclusively about Supergroups featuring famous solo artists and band members along with, Offshoots which are bands who contain the bulk of a previous incarnation of a famous band. Our hope is that we turn you on to something new.Songs this week include:Chequered Past – “A World Gone Wild” from Chequered Past (1984)California Breed – “Midnight Oil” from California Breed (2014)BackBeat Band – “Rock & Roll Music” from BackBeat – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1994)Brides Of Destruction – “Brace Yourself” from Brides Of Destruction (2004)Robin Trower - “Life On Earth” from BLT (1981)Down ‘N' Outz – “By Tonight” from My ReGeneration (2010)Metal Allegiance – “Wait Until Tomorrow” from Metal Allegiance (2015)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uIf you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/

This week is our 8th installment of, “Degrees Of Separation…” where we discuss the more obscure side projects and solo releases from some not-so-obscure artists. This week we pay homage to the rock n' roll rags to riches story that is the metal god-like voice that is Tim “Ripper” Owens. He inspired a major motion picture, not to mention gave opportunities to countless other singers from tribute bands to perhaps be considered as the replacement for the real deals. This guy has some of the most sought-after pipes of the last 25 years. All hear our warning; never turn your back on The Ripper!New to InObscuria? It's all about excavating obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal from one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. While we may be talking about bands that you know intimately in this episode, perhaps you are not aware of the depth of side projects they have had over their careers. Our hope is that we turn you on to something new!Songs this week include:Ripper - “Embattled” from Embattled - Single (2022)Winter's Bane - “Heart Of A Killer” from Heart Of A Killer (1993)Yngwie J. In this episode, Krk basically laughs through the entire episode because that is what he and his buddy, Dima Levanchuk do when they get together. On the serious side, they discuss how Dima went from a career in math and science at Boeing to doing the 48 Hour Film Project, then working at pop culture phenomenon, Funko, and eventually on to AWS at Amazon. There's also talk about the seriously goofy films they made together in the 48HFP sibling event, The Four Points Film Project. And... And... Krk geeks out over the fact that Dima introduced him to Charlie Benante, Frank Bello, and Mark Osegueda of Anthrax and Death Angel respectively.
On November 2nd, 2021 we spoke with Mark Osegueda of Death Angel about their new live release "The Bastard Tracks" and the metal scene in general. https://youtu.be/k0VDN00gfsA
My guest on Episode 213 of The Brooklyn Blast Furnace is a "Neighborhood guy". With roots in Brooklyn and residing in Long Island, Mark Menghi has done and continues to do amazing things. From being a regular at L'Amour to playing in local bands in venues all over New York City. He became friendly with members of legendary metal bands. He founded and put together "Metal Allegiance" with him, Dave Ellefson of "Megadeth", Mike Portnoy of "Dream Theater" and a ton of other bands and Alex Skolnick of "Testament". The even cooler thing is that they rotate guest singers and musicians. There's been appearances by Phil Anselmo, Gary Holt, Zetro, Andreas Kisser, Charlie Benante, Geezer Butler, Mark Osegueda and a ton of others. Way too many to name. He also played bass on the "BPMD" project with Bobby Blitz, Phil Demmel and Mike Portnoy as well. Super interesting guy. Much respect. Enjoy.
Mark Osegueda joins Jaide Alicia to talk about his life in and out of Death Angel. Mark describes being in a Bay Area thrash metal band in the 80's- the "competition" between bands, what led to Death Angel's abrupt end and unexpected return.
