Gjennom hele 80-tallet jobbet han som modell, vanka på byens hotteste utesteder, jobba i baren på Stravinsky, solgte klær for BiK Bok-konsernet og spilte fotball i storsatsingen til Frigg. Tom levde rett og slett livet på 80-tallet, og i denne episoden forteller han hele historien.

Bare innrøm det; om ganske nøyaktig en måned er det på `an igjen. Du skal begynne å trene, leve sunnere, slanke deg, komme i bedre form og se bedre ut. Treningssentrene står klare til å ta imot din innmelding. Fordi du vet at «denne gangene kommer du til å klare det» går du får ett års medlemskap med binding. Da sparer du jo noen kroner. Før du børster støvet av joggeskoene eller benytter deg av Black December tilbudet til sportsbutikkene, la meg stille deg et spørsmål: Hva vil bli annerledes i år? Mens du tygger på den vil jeg fortelle deg en godt skjult hemmelighet: Den mest effektive måten å slanke seg på (og dermed komme i form) er å bli drøvtygger. Eller spise mest mulig plantebasert. Jeg kødder ikke. Heng med meg til slutten så skal jeg fortelle deg hvorfor. Jeg elsker begynnelsen av 80-tallet. Ikke bare musikken, hårgelèen fra S-s-s-s-s-s- Studioline og Poco Loco. Jeg digget den innovative og kule moten som fore eksempel hvite tennissokker utenpå dongeribuksa, skinnreimer som armbånd og ikke minst leggvarmere som tilbehør for å vise at du hadde sett filmen «Flashdance». Danse «muvsa» var vakre i sin enkelhet. Alle kunne delta. Det gjaldt å flytte den ene foten fremfor den andre mens armene hang urørlig ned lags overkroppen. Muligens var inspirasjonen til denne merkelige måten å danse på hentet fra en do-kø under Woodstock festivalen. Hvem vet? Etter hvert begynte man å involvere armene mer aktivitet. Da meldte jeg meg ut. Stilte meg opp med et påtatt «dansing er for duster» uttrykk langs en vegg og ventet på «Careless whisper» av Wham. 90-tallet var en mørk periode i musikkens pophistorie. Iallfall sammenlignet med tiåret før. Jeg har aldri likt Ace of Base, «Scootaaaaaa» eller de andre trancedancerne. De aller beste minnene både musikalsk og sosialt har jeg fra tidlig 1980. Moroa ble avsluttet oktober 1990 idet jeg gikk inn i militæret for å avtjene førstegangstjenesten. Hva har 80- og 90-tallet med plantebasert kosthold å gjøre? Vel, det handler om det å trives. For et drøy år siden var jeg i ferd med å nærme meg 90 tallet på vekta. For en forfengelig, middelaldersk nordlending var det krise. Var slaget tapt? Skulle jeg rett og slett bare gå til innkjøp av størrelse XL og foreta den årlige Walk of shame inn døra på treningssenteret? Eller skulle jeg ta grep en gang for alle. Rydde ut av kjøleskapet og starte helt på nytt? Det ble det siste. Redningen ble en dokumentar som formidlet noe jeg var i stand til å forstå. Jeg ble ikke engang litt skeptisk. Tenkte bare «selvfølgelig» og «hvorfor har ikke noen fortalt meg dette før?» Veien til grønnsaksavdelingen på Obs var kort og jeg syntes jeg hørte filmmusikken til Rocky idet jeg nærmet meg fruktkorgene. Etter å ha fylt handlevogna med søtpoteter, gulrøtter, løk, paprika, erter og linser følte jeg meg allerede et par kilo lettere og i myyye bedre form. Det er mulig jeg også tenkte at de som stod rundt meg i køen var tapere og at jeg var den skarpeste grønnsakskniven i skuffen. Det funket. Selv om jeg fikk mye pepper i begynnelsen. Nei, ikke krydderet. Kommentarer og morsomheter. Men etter hvert som kiloene rant av stilnet også tilbakemeldingene. Etter noen få måneder kunne jeg konstatere at starten på åttitallet var tilbake. Denne gangen som siffer på badevekta. I dag har vekta stoppet på midten av syttitallet. Et bra tall. Også med tanke på musikk. Jeg må dele et annet minne med deg. Jeg var en ihuga nikotinforkjemper helt frem til 1992. Begynte å røyke på ungdomsskolen fordi det var tøft og nektet å slutte. Husker at jeg ble forbanna da Dagfinn Høybråten (røykelovens far) lanserte ideen om å forby røyking enkelte steder. Ingen skulle komme å fortelle meg hva jeg skulle gjøre. Jeg bestemte hva som var sunt for meg eller ikke. Jeg skulle ALDRI slutte å røyke. I 1992 var det slutt. Helsa skrantet og jeg krøp til korset. Trodde jeg skulle dø og sluttet på dagen. Har ikke røykt siden. Måten kjøttfrie dager/uker/måneder har blitt lansert på vekker minner fra den gang da jeg selv røykte. Jeg følte nok at jeg ble umyndiggjort og fratatt retten til selv å bestemme over hva som var best for meg. Valget om å radikalt endre kostholdet var mitt eget. Sannsynligvis var det et enkelt valg fordi jeg var på leting og selv fant en løsning som har funket veldig bra for meg. I etterkant har jeg lest meg opp og satt meg inn i fordelen ved å spise plantebasert. Jeg tror ikke at det å bli 100% plantebasert over natten er den beste løsningen for alle som ønsker å forbedre helsa eller slanke seg. Folk må finne sin egen grunn til å gjøre det de ønsker. Å tvinge det nedover hodene er ikke den beste måten å hjelpe på. Opplysning og informasjon kombinert med et stadig bedre alternativ vil kunne fungere bedre for de aller fleste. Blant annet ved å fortelle deg hva jeg selv gjør. Min opplevelse sammenfaller godt med det som finnes av seriøs forskning og studier. Plantebasert kosthold tilbyr uendelig flere fordeler enn bare effektiv slanking. Men det må du finne ut av selv.
