In August 2007, 20 year old Sophie Lancaster and her 21 year old boyfriend Robert Maltby were viciously attacked in the skate park area of Stubbylee Park, in Bacup, Lancashire. The mob of 5 teenage boys initially assaulted Robert, leaving him unconscious; rather than fleeing for her own safety, Sophie stayed and cradled her injured boyfriend, but the mob weren't done. In the early morning hours of August 11, 2007, Sophie Lancaster and her boyfriend, Robert Maltby, were passing through Stubbylee Park in Lancashire, UK, when they were attacked by a group of teenage boys who beat the couple savagely, resulting in Lancaster's death two weeks later. Sophie Lancaster was a 20 year old woman from Bacup, Lancashire who was murdered for being different. Sophie and her boyfriend, Robert Maltby were walking through a park on their way home late one in evening in August 2007 when they were both brutally attacked by a gang of teenage youths. During this weeks case, we discuss the issues we had during our teenage years for dressing similarly to Sophie and Rob and why this case was a difficult one for us to cover. Garry Newlove died in 2007 after confronting a gang of youths he suspected of vandalising his wife's car. Three teenagers aged 19, 17 and 16 were convicted of his murder. Garry Newlove's death was one of a number of high profile, widely reported murders in England during the late 2000s which purported to highlight the rise of crime involving youth gangs. Murdered for Being Different is an award-winning documentary about the murder of Sophie Lancaster and assault of Robert Maltby. It recently aired on BBC One and I was floored by how good it was.

The Metal Cell Studio packed it's mics, laptop cans of Carlsberg and headed up to Galway following the trail of slime to track down Ten Ton Slug. Emma speaks to Sylvia the mother of 20-year-old Sophie Lancaster who back in the August of 2007 along with her boyfriend Rob were brutally attacked late at night by a gang in a park in Rossendale, Lancashire. So horrific was the attack that both were left in comas. Rob recovered from his injuries. Sophie very sadly did not. The two of them were attacked simply because they were dressed as goths.

Almost ten years ago Sophie Lancaster and her boyfriend Rob were severely beaten by a group of Teenagers because they were "different" part of the Goth subculture. On August 24th 2007 Sophie succumbed to her injuries. Soon after two of the young men involved were tried and found guilty of her murder and the others were found guilty of grievous bodily harm in the beating of her boyfriend Rob. In the time that has passed since, The Sophie Lancaster Foundation was founded to help spread awareness and equality for members of all subcultures within our society, through education and their tireless work with Legislators and Law Enforcement the world over they have helped create protections for those who society might deem "Different" due to their beliefs, appearance, or choice of music.
