Sean Carroll's Mindscape: Science, Society, Philosophy, Culture, Arts, and Ideas
It's the end of the year, and time for our annual holiday break here at Mindscape. But as usual, we wrap up with a Holiday Message. This year, inspired by Joni Mitchell's "Hits" and "Misses" albums, I go through my scientific papers and talk about some of my favorites -- some of which were hits, in terms of making an impact on subsequent research, and some of which were misses by that standard. But I love them all! It's an excuse to talk about process -- how papers come to be, from the initial informal idea to sitting down and doing the work.Support Mindscape on Patreon.Blog post with transcript: https://www.preposterousuniverse.com/podcast/2024/12/23/holiday-message-hits-and-misses/Here are links to the papers I discuss in the episode.S.M. The Doctor and Jo Jones arrive at 'Always', a Victorian manor house perched impossibly on the distant storm-world of Nethara Reach. We explore the changing nature of shared cultural experiences, from the era of must-see TV to today's fragmented media landscape. This led us to ponder the value of communal viewing experiences and how streaming platforms might evolve to foster more connection. We then dove into a fascinating discussion on design, art, and the objects that surround us. Inspired by Bruno Munari's book "Design as Art," we contemplated the intersection of form and function, the concept of "quintessence" in everyday items, and the importance of creating beautiful, purposeful objects. This naturally flowed into an examination of our own collections, particularly focusing on typewriters. We wrapped up by reflecting on the emotional connections we form with certain objects, whether due to their design, provenance, or the memories they evoke. We considered how surrounding ourselves with meaningful, well-crafted items can fuel creativity and spark joy in our daily lives. Ultimately, we celebrated the beauty found in both the cutting-edge and the vintage, recognizing that true artistry transcends time and medium. -AI If you enjoyed this episode, please consider giving us a rating and/or a review. Of all these devotees, the gopīs are recognized as superior because they do not know anything other than satisfying Kṛṣṇa. Nor do the gopīs expect any return from Kṛṣṇa. Indeed, sometimes Kṛṣṇa puts them into extreme suffering by separating Himself from them. Nonetheless, they cannot forget Kṛṣṇa. When Kṛṣṇa left Vṛndāvana for Mathurā, the gopīs became most dejected and spent the rest of their lives simply crying in separation from Kṛṣṇa. This means that in one sense they were never actually separated from Kṛṣṇa. There is no difference between thinking of Kṛṣṇa and associating with Him. Rather, vipralambha-sevā, thinking of Kṛṣṇa in separation, as Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu did, is far better than serving Kṛṣṇa directly. Thus of all the devotees who have developed unalloyed devotional love for Kṛṣṇa, the gopīs are most exalted, and out of all these exalted gopīs, Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī is the highest. No one can excel the devotional service of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. Indeed, even Kṛṣṇa cannot understand the attitude of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī; therefore He took Her position and appeared as Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, just to understand Her transcendental feelings. Vampires have always been a fascination of mine, but more so with their thoughts and feeling rather than the transformation or the blood lust. Only Lovers Left Alive invokes the feeling of Interview With The Vampire, with much less about the sparkling and questionable love triangle (like Twilight), and more about the quintessential emphasis on how they simply live. The characters, Adam and Eve, show us through intellectual thoughts and feelings how less is more, how loss can still hold true for someone who has experienced all of their lives and how morality can sometimes have to be placed on pause for the sake of survival. Kit Schluter celebrates the publication of "Cartoons," (City Lights) & Garrett Caples celebrates the publication of "Proses: Incomparable Parables! Fabulous Fables! Cruel Tales!" (Wave Books). Purchase "Cartoons:" https://citylights.com/city-lights-published/cartoons/ Purchase "Proses:" https://citylights.com/general-fiction/proses-incomparable-parables-fabulous/ About "Cartoons:" Set in the uncanny valley between Bugs Bunny & Franz Kafka, "Cartoons" is an explosive series of outrageous, absurdist tales. "Cartoons" proposes itself as a genre of imaginary writing in opposition to the realism of most contemporary U.S. fiction, aligning itself with the French symbolism & Latin American fabulism its author is known to translate. A giant cricket with a tiny Kit Schluter in a jar, an umbrella who confuses the words porpoise and purpose in its quest for self-fulfillment, a pair of slugs go on a bender, these are just a few denizens of its pages, suffused with a fairy tale-like animism. A microwave oven decries microaggressions. A beer bottle is filled with regret. An escalator mechanic's shoe conceals a terrible secret. Kit Schluter's recent work has appeared in Boston Review, BOMB, & Brooklyn Rail. He is author of the poetry collection "Pierrot's Fingernails" (Canarium Books) as well as numerous chapbooks & artist editions of poems & stories. Schluter is included in the latest edition of "Best American Experimental Writing" (Wesleyan UP, 2020), edited by Carmen Maria Machado, Joyelle McSweeney, Jesse Damiani & Seth Abramson. He has translated widely from French & Spanish, including works by Rafael Bernal (New Directions), Marcel Schwob (Wakefield Press), & Olivia Tapiero (Nightboat Books). He recently illustrated Sebastian Castillo's novel "SALMON." Kit coordinates production & design for Nightboat Books and lives in Mexico City. About "Proses:" In the grand tradition of poet's fiction, "Proses: Incomparable Parables! Fabulous Fables! Cruel Tales!" is a collection of nine phantasmagorical stories by poet & City Lights editor, Garrett Caples. Turning its back on the ethos of traditional narrative, "Proses" draws on Marcel Schwob, magical realism, & speculative fiction for inspiration, projecting worlds dominated by dream logic & impossible dimensions. Spectral nuns, xenobots, explosive phraseology, & even Ringo Starr are some of the unexpected dilemmas confronting the various protagonists. Poets such as Andrew Joron, Kit Schluter, & Claude Grind make cameo appearances. While each story is a standalone, the collection amounts to an intricate whole, as themes, objects, & characters recur, encouraging readers to enjoy the book sequentially. Regardless of how it's enjoyed, "Proses" is both a satire of the world of contemporary poetry & a celebration of that world's fantastic, infinite imagination. Garrett Caples is the author of "Lovers of Today" (Wave Books, 2021), "Power Ballads" (Wave Books, 2016), "Complications" (2007), & "The Garrett Caples Reader" (1999), a collection of outtakes, "The Rise & Fall of Johnny Volume" (2020), & a bilingual selection, "Noches Apátridas" (Unstated Nights, 2019). He's also written a book of essays, "Retrievals" (2014), & a pamphlet, "Quintessence of the Minor" (2010). He's the editor of Philip Lamantia's "Preserving Fire: Selected Prose" (2018), Samuel Greenberg's "Poems from the Greenberg MSS" (2019), & Michael McClure's "Mule Kick Blues and Last Poems" (2021), as well as the co-editor of "The Collected Poems of Philip Lamantia" (2013), "Particulars of Place" (2015) by Richard O. Moore, "Incidents of Travel in Poetry: New and Selected Poems" (2016) by Frank Lima, & "Arcana: A Stephen Jonas Reader" (2019). According to the official character bio, the giant robot, Devastator, has a unique consciousness that is also a composite of all 5 unique, individual robot personalities. Do you think this is a good illustration of how God works, albeit being a Quintessence as opposed to a Trinity? 08:40 – Chiropractic. Religion? New Age wooow? Scam? 13:15 – Most Christians I know would say “light as a feather, stiff as a board” is demons. Because, you know… If it’s not demons, is there a natural explanation for why it works? 16:50 – What do you think the likelihood is that we will meet beings from other realities that God created when we get to heaven? Or should we expect that this is the only reality, and the sole occupants of heaven will be from this space-time continuum? 18:23 – Why did Jesus ascend into the sky and what happened to His body? Did it disappear or do he go to other planets or outer space? 21:14 – Was it not a good idea for Johnny to take the bet with the devil in the song “Devil went down to Georgia”, given that the Church strongly encourages not conversing with the devil or demons, even though he won the bet? 24:03 – If humans evolved from different humanoid species in the past, at what point did we gain a soul? 29:07 – Why did Peter put on his clothes before jumping in the water? 31:05 – In Tobit, Archangel Raphael states that it only seemed to Tobias that he was eating, but really did not. So did Raphael atomize the food he touched when having meals with Tobias or is there another explanation? How would someone be able to explain that Jesus really ate with his Apostles when Archangel Raphael only made it seem like it? 36:35 – I wonder is it a sin to be psychic? My grandmother was a very gifted psychic and a devout Catholic. This created some issues when she was criticized by the priest at church. …
This Sunday, we start to narrow our focus onto individual sections of the Lord‘s prayer. And while this may be a passage that is very familiar to many of us, there is much to glean from looking at it so closely. In 6:9, we see how Jesus addresses the Father as well as a prayer concerning his name.

Can you find out the perfection of the Almighty? The abstract תַּכְלִית (takhlit) from כָּלָה (kalah, “to be complete; to be perfect”) may mean the end or limit of something, perhaps to perfection. So the NIV has “can you probe the limits of the Almighty?” The LXX has: “have you come to the end of that which the Almighty has made?” COSMIC It is higher than the heavens – what can you do? The Hebrew says “heights of heaven, what can you do?” A. B. Davidson suggested this was an exclamation and should be left that way. But most commentators will repoint גָּבְהֵי שָׁמַיִם (govhe shamayim, “heights of heaven”) to גְּבֹהָה מִשָּׁמַיִם (gevohah mishamayim, “higher than the heavens”) to match the parallel expression. The LXX may have rearranged the text: “heaven is high.” QUANTUM It is deeper than Sheol – what can you know? Or “deeper than hell.” The word “Sheol” always poses problems for translation. Here because it is the opposite of heaven in this merism, “hell” would be a legitimate translation. It refers to the realm of the dead—the grave and beyond. The language is excessive, but the point is that God's wisdom is immeasurable—and Job is powerless before it. MEASUREMENT BY TIER Its measure is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea. CONFINEMENT BY QUARANTINE If he comes by The verb יַחֲלֹף (yakhalof) is literally “passes by/through” (NIV “comes along” in the sense of “if it should so happen”). Many accept the emendation to יַחְתֹּף (yakhtof, “he seizes,” cf. Gordis, Driver), but there is not much support for these. and confines you The verb is the Hiphil of סָגַר (sagar, “to close; to shut”) and so here in this context it probably means something like “to shut in; to confine.” But this is a difficult meaning, and the sentence is cryptic. E. Dhorme (Job, 162) thinks this word and the next have to be antithetical, and so he suggests from a meaning “to keep confined” the idea of keeping a matter secret; and with the next verb, “to convene an assembly,” he offers “to divulge it.” CONVENE A COURT FOR EXPOSURE and convenes a court, then who can prevent him? The denominative Hiphil of קָהָל (qahal, “an assembly”) has the idea of “to convene an assembly.” In this context there would be the legal sense of convening a court, i.e., calling Job to account (D. J. A. Clines, Job [WBC], 255). See E. Ullendorff, “The Meaning of QHLT,” VT 12 (1962): 215; he defines the verb also as “argue, rebuke.” JESUS Colossians 1:19 For God was pleased to have all his essence dwell in the Son CHRIST Colossians 2:9-11 For in him all the essence of deity lives in bodily form, and you have been filled in him, who is the head over every ruler and authority. In him you also were circumcised – not, however, with a circumcision performed by human hands, but by the removal of the fleshly body, that is, through the circumcision done by Christ. But rest assured, many others share your struggle and are also seeking clarity on this complex topic. In this episode, you will be able to:· Understand the origins of water in the solar system and its significance for life beyond Earth.· Explore the fascinating process of the formation of the solar system and how it shaped our cosmic neighborhood.· Discover the potential for terraforming Venus, unlocking the possibility of transforming inhospitable planets into habitable ones.· Uncover the abundance of water in the solar system and its implications for future space exploration and colonization.· Learn about the slingshot effect in space missions and how it enables spacecraft to travel vast distances with limited fuel.'Two out of the three atoms in a water molecule are hydrogen. So two thirds of your 75%, which is 50% of the atoms in your body, come from the Big Bang. Why? You feel old these days? 13.8 billion year old hydrogen.' - Andrew DunkleyTerraforming Venus Possibilities: Terraforming Venus is a topic of fascinating discussion. The suggestion of transforming its carbon dioxide-heavy atmosphere using photosynthetic algae could potentially cool it down over extended periods. However, the surface atmospheric pressure on Venus is significantly higher than Earth's, making such an endeavor incredibly complex and presently unfeasible. The key moments in this episode are:00:00:00 - Introduction to Dark Energy Survey 00:08:15 - Peregrine Lander Mission 00:13:48 - Dark Energy Survey Results 00:16:18 - Quintessence and Thunderplump 00:17:38 - Exploring the Cosmic Megastructure 00:19:56 - Universe Homogeneity and Big Ring Discovery 00:23:16 - Speculation on Megastructure Origins 00:24:53 - Unraveling the Mystery of Cosmic Structures 00:29:32 - Addressing Audience Feedback 00:34:17 - Formation of the Solar System and Origin of Water 00:37:27 - Slingshot Effect and Spacecraft Momentum 00:40:43 - Terraforming Venus and Atmospheric Cleanup 00:45:04 - Are Humans Stars? Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 19, 2023 is: quintessence kwin-TESS-unss noun Quintessence is a formal word that can refer to the most typical or perfect example of something, or the most important part of something. // Roasting marshmallows over an open fire and making s'mores is the quintessence of camping in the great outdoors. // The quintessence of music is the melody. See the entry > Examples: "The stories read like the quintessence of the human imagination in its densest, strangest form, as if his language were a thick, sweet concentrate of the creativity that other writers dilute to a sippable weakness. The comparison with Kafka misses much of [Bruno] Schulz's surreal humour and vivacity; the writer of whom he reminds me most is Maurice Sendak, with his bewitching childhood worlds filled with galumphing, unpredictable adults." — Joe Moshenska, The Guardian (London), 14 May 2023 Did you know? Long ago, when people believed that everything was made up of four elements—earth, air, fire, and water—they thought the stars and planets were made up of yet another element. In the Middle Ages, people called this element by its Medieval Latin name, quinta essentia, literally, "fifth essence." They believed the quinta essentia was essential to all kinds of matter, and if they could somehow isolate it, it would cure all disease. People have since given up on that idea, but English users have kept quintessence, the offspring of quinta essentia, as a word for the purest essence of a thing. Some modern physicists have given quintessence a new twist—they use it to refer to a form of the dark energy believed to make up almost 70 percent of the energy in the observable universe.
