On this episode of the podcast, we're joined by Justine and Sammy of Church Road Records/Employed To Serve—exploring how the dual demands of running a label and playing in a touring band shape their daily lives and creative decisions. Church Road Records may have started in 2017 as a DIY operation run out of a spare room, but in just a few short years, it has carved out a reputation for consistency, taste, and innovation in the world of underground heavy music. What sets Church Road apart isn't just the quality of its roster, but the sense of identity that runs through the label—an identity that's rooted in the personal vision and hands-on approach of its founders. Evan and I speak with Justine and Sammy about the origins of the label, the practical and emotional challenges of launching a self-funded venture, and the evolution that has seen Church Road grow from a passion project to a respected institution within the scene. We also dig into the label's unique subscription service model, the criteria they use when signing new artists, and their broader thoughts on the shifting landscape of the music industry in 2025. Of course, we also talk about Employed to Serve, the acclaimed band that Justine fronts and Sammy plays guitar in—exploring how the dual demands of running a label and playing in a touring band shape their daily lives and creative decisions. This episode offers an inside look at what it takes to build and sustain a truly independent label in today's music ecosystem—and why passion, resilience, and community remain at the core of it all. Justine Jones Employed To Serve Interview: Justine sits down with Scott Penfold on the latest Loaded Radio Podcast to dive deep into the band's latest album Fallen Star, collaborating with Will Ramos of Lorna Shore, drawing inspiration from Scandinavian melodic death metal, and how she balances fronting a crushing metalcore band while running Church Road Records. Justine Jones opens up about the emotional and creative journey behind Fallen Star With their highly anticipated fifth studio album Fallen Star arriving back on April 25, 2025, Employed To Serve are ushering in a new era of modern metalcore—one that fuses melody, rage, and raw vulnerability in equal measure. Frontwoman Justine Jones joins Scott Penfold on this week's Loaded Radio Podcast to pull back the curtain on the emotional core of the new record and what fans can expect from this bold new chapter. In the conversation, Justine breaks down the band's stylistic evolution, citing influences like In Flames and Soilwork as guiding lights behind the album's more melodic and expansive sound. “We wanted to create something that felt bigger, more cinematic,” she says. “There's still heaviness—but it's in service of the emotion, not just brutality for brutality's sake.” 'Atonement' with Will Ramos brings fury and fun to the spotlight The podcast also digs into the band's lead single "Atonement", which features none other than Will Ramos of Lorna Shore on guest vocals. The track rips with intensity, and its Office-inspired music video has been making waves for its tongue-in-cheek take on workplace chaos. According to Justine, the idea for the video came from wanting to show a different side of the band. Recording one song at a time, and what it taught Justine about herself In a new approach for Fallen Star, Justine recorded her vocals one track at a time instead of tackling them all at once. The result? A more focused and emotionally connected performance across the board. “It helped me put everything I had into each individual song,” she explains. “That kind of care really brought the record to life.” Running Church Road Records while fronting one of the UK's heaviest bands Aside from her vocal duties, Justine also co-runs the fiercely independent Church Road Records with guitarist Sammy Urwin. The label has become a hub for some of the most exciting rising acts in heavy music. On the podcast, she talks about how that role complements her work in Employed To Serve and why keeping things DIY still matters in today's oversaturated industry. Touring, the future of the band, and staying grounded through chaos With a new UK headline tour on the horizon and buzz building around Fallen Star, Employed To Serve seem poised to take their place among the elite modern metal acts pushing the genre forward. But Justine remains refreshingly grounded: “We're always just trying to make the best music we can—if it connects with people, that's the real reward.” Bio Employed To Serve is a British metalcore band formed in 2011 in Woking, England, by vocalist Justine Jones and guitarist Sammy Urwin. Initially emerging from the underground scene with a raw, grindcore-influenced sound, the band has evolved to incorporate elements of hardcore punk, mathcore, and death metal. Their discography includes five studio albums: Greyer Than You Remember (2015), The Warmth of a Dying Sun (2017), Eternal Forward Motion (2019), Conquering (2021), and Fallen Star (2025). Known for their intense live performances and thought-provoking lyrics, Employed To Serve has been praised for crushing the modern metalcore scene while maintaining a DIY ethos.

‘Aether' is the much-anticipated debut album of Forlorn, the ‘folk horror' band who blend expressionist art, crushing soundscapes and paganism to carve out their own brand of innovative alternative music. Throughout ‘Aether', Forlorn pay their respects to the major 'elements', acting as part of a progressing metal pagan ritual. The juxtaposition of ethereal vocals, with chaotic drums and crushing low-level guitars, paired with vocalist Megan Jenkin's brutal screams, bring together Forlorn's unique sound and visual identity. Their haunting live presence has also graced stages across the UK, alongside artists like Dying Wish, DESTRAGE, CRYPTA, Ithica, Devil Sold His Soul and URNE as well as festivals like at Radar Festival, Tech Fest and Collision Festival. Anyone who has seen Forlorn live can attest to the immersive experience it is, with us describing our first time seeing them in 2022 as: A 30-minute showcase of dreamy post-metal with the sharpness of hardcore, explosivity of metalcore and a touch of Midsommar-esqe eeriness. 2025 is looking to be the year they truly break out, and ‘Aether' will be released on March 28th, 2025, via Church Road Records. We spoke to vocalist Megan and guitarist Edd about the new album, and the journey that Forlorn has been on over the past few years. We also learn how Forlorn has slowly found its identity, taking that creativity to another level, expanding on it in both record and live form, and so much more. Watch My Dying - Napköszörü (Egyenes Kerülö, 2024) Door Jason Köhnen (Bong-Ra, Celestial Season, Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble) Beluister de uitzending met Jason Watch My Dying. Bleed From Within - In Place of your Halo (Zenith, 2025) Jasper Verhorst (TerraDown, A Life Aligned) Beluister de uitzending met Jasper Want, een band die ik wil noemen die men zeeeker in 2025 moet checken is Bleed From Within. Terzij De Horde - In One of These, I am your Enemy (In One of These, I am your Enemy, 2022) Daan de Neef (voormalig VVD-kamerlid, speechschrijver burgemeester Carola Schouten) Beluister de uitzending met Daan Heel simpel: dat is Terzij de Horde uit Utrecht. In one of these I am your enemy'. Love it! Kan niet wachten.

London based Middle Eastern progressive doom band Lowen have released their sophomore album, ‘Do Not Go to War with The Demons of Mazandaran' via Church Road Records. One of the many fables of the Shahnameh, the Persian book of Kings, concerns the folly of rulers who jealously extend their empires despite the warnings of their own people. It is during this tale that he is warned not to go to war with the demons of Mazandaran. This chapter of the book forms the concept of the album. Helmed by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Nina Saeidi, who was born into exile from Iran in the UK as there, playing metal is illegal and women singing unaccompanied risk execution. This cruel oppression has served to inspire Lowen to create glorious intense progressive doom. Mixing fantastical stories with deep dives into history and shining a light on important modern issues across six epic listens. The epitome of focus, Lowen have packed out each track with an implausible amount of instrumental detail and ensured that Nina Saeidi's immense range is always in play and on show. Turn this one up, and make sure your neighbors hear it too while you're at it, as we welcome the powerful frontwoman Justine Jones from the U.K. based metallic hardcore outfit, Employed To Serve. We invite Justine along with us to talk about their highly-anticipated 4th studio album “Conquering”. It's been roughly a decade into the makings for Justine, and with the new album, she and her bandmates are finally feeling they have hit their stride. Justine describes the production process from the first day to the last day and how there was a sense of pressure to reach their ceiling of musicianship. Aside from an album release, we also ask Justine about her record label called “Church Road Records” which she co-owns with her partner and bandmate Sammy Urwin. Founded in 2017 while overcoming the challenges during the recent pandemic, Justine is determined to keep the wheels turning by taking part within the music business herself. Whether it's on the stage or off, the passion and dedication within her craft remains at an all time high. One could even say, she is “Conquering” her way through her love for the music she so often puts on dynamic display. The album is full of jawbreaking riffs, ferocious vocals, and hammering drums incorporated with the sounds of hardcore punk. Take our word for it, and have the ice packs ready for the ensuing headbanging. It's been ages since I last spoke to Justine Jones, chief throat shredder in Woking's Employed To Serve – which is a bit of an understatement really, ETS might just be the best home grown rock band to tread the boards of British music venues today. Justine is also the label boss at Church Road Records. I reckon it's got to be almost two years since we last conversed, and… well, a lot has happened in those two years. Having a natter is much overdue, the band have got a new record – their fourth, Conquering, is due to be released on September 17th via Spinefarm Records - and so this conversation takes place on a bizarrely hot Autumn Day. Apologies for the low level banging and clanging on this episode. I think Castle Spoook might have awoken a spirit or something – or maybe I just need to do something about the mic I'm currently using. The James McMahon Music Podcast is a Spoook Media production. There's also some much more positive chatter about Sammy's new 'supergroup' Glorious and the craze of quarantine quizzing... -- Support Sammy's bands now by purchasing their records and merch below: - Employed to Serve: https://employedtoserve.bandcamp.com/ (Latest album 'Eternal Forward Motion' out now via Spinefarm Records) - Renounced: https://renounced.bandcamp.com/ (Latest album 'Beauty is a Destructive Angel' out now via Holy Roar Records) - Glorious: https://glorioushc.bandcamp.com/releases (Debut EP 'Unashamed' out July 3rd via Church Road Records) You can also pick up records from Sammy's record label, Church Road Records: https://churchroadrecords.limitedrun.com/ Support Good As Gold Group's new fundraising initiative The Tours That Never Were, in aid of independent and underground UK-based bands and crew, and various charities: https://the-tour-that-never-was-2020.myshopify.com/ -- SUBSCRIBE TO BITCHIN' BREW – Available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts: http://smarturl.it/bitchinbrew Join the BITCHIN' CREW, the official Facebook community for friends, fans and listeners of Bitchin' Brew: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2374640246196440 Facebook: http://facebook.com/bxtchxnbrew Twitter: https://twitter.com/BitchinBrewPod Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bitchinbrewpod/ Email: b.brewcast@gmail.com Theme tune: 'Woes' by Scarecrow Boat (Courtesy of Ol' Boat Records: https://olboatrecords.limitedrun.com/)
