#65. Robyn Koenig - Getting Out of Your Own Way

“ Pivots are power steps towards your dreams “ Robyn Koenig ( @rarefind_love ) would seem to be tumbling through life without aim. With experiences in fashion, business executive, podcaster, coaching and the nonprofit world. But if you look closely and get to know her, you see no matter what her profession was, her focus never truly changed. We dive right in on this one and confront some of peoples major “trip ups” in life. Fear, judgment and lack of confidence can cause people to make decisions or focus on things that wont get them closer to what they really want. In fact a lot of times we've forgotten what the things we really want are and that's why Robyn highly recommends we often revisit the things that make us happy and bring us joy in life. One of the subtle things we talk about is paying attention to how you show up to situations and tasks. Do they make you anxious, angry or happy. If they cause negative emotions and energy learning to recognize it, and then develop tools to snap you out of could dramatically impact your life. She sees O.S.M.s ( Oh shit moments ) as opportunities, they tend to be loaded with large amounts of action. She also reminds us its okay to make room to be angry because it's real and we can use it to get moving, but you cant get stuck in anger. Robyn is a wonderful coach with many tools and mechanisms to help you get out of your own way and move towards the things you want in life. “ I didn't always know if I was choosing something based off fear or ego, or based on what I wanted deep down in my soul “ Anna Zambreny ( @annasintuitive ) noticed that people were reaching physical and fitness goals they had but still weren't that happy. This is what drove her to find ways to incorporate spiritual/self love practices into her personal training so others can feel the true happiness they are looking for. Since this discovery she has really shifted the way she not only handles adversity but how she communicates the experiences. “ talking more openly about experiences without shame to open the doors for others “ is how she explains her willingness to be vulnerable . That's why she shares her story on her blog and podcast, in hopes that she can give you a better chance of connecting with your higher self and becoming aligned spiritually, physically and mentally. We learn many things during our conversation. How a lot of anxiety is triggered by overindulgence and inflammation of the body. Sometimes anxiety isn't even our own, it can belong to the people around us or the environment we are in. There are so many other things in this episode so I hope you've listened to the whole thing. Even though the path has changed many time, he always kept his love for music in mind When you look at where Chad is now its easy to assume the path was success after success after success. But behind every skill and talent comes a story or discomfort and forced learning. Chad did learn to play guitar to be in that highschool band. Adam like most of us would go to work everyday, seeing many things wrong with how people were managed, trained and worst yet, how people felt about being at work. Instead of spending everyday dreading having to come back he decided to do something about it. Being a lifetime student of leaders and business information he realized the missing piece at most companies was culture and leadership training. He explains to us how normally the guy with the best metrics gets promoted but more often than not they lack the leadership skills to drive results with his or her team. This causes them to become the “ dictator behind the desk “ He decided to take the best of what he's learned and package into a digestible formula he calls ACES leadership and helps train other companies on how to not only groom their leaders but then teach those leaders how to shape the culture of the business. What is ACES ? A: cknowledgement - C: ultivating, training and up skilling those who want to grow E: mpower your team S: trengthen and learn from/celebrate successes How do you do that? Well you'll have ask him directly One thing that he really contributes to his success that comes up many times during our talk is niching down, starting small and being patient. In 1987 Michael found himself visiting home in England to help his mother with the passing of his father. While there a friend reached out hope Mike could help build a database for his business. During this time is when Mike decided that File Maker and database solution software/tools would be the focus of his professional life. Mike learned chess from a young age from his father, it taught him how to strategize, think on his toes, how to play offense and defense. It seems that those experiences have helped mold the vision he currently has for NautilusFM. “ spreadsheets are terrible for a business, you have this information and a different spreadsheet for a different set of information and none of talk to one another. “ With nautilus, you have a single screen so you never have to leave “ homebase” and keep it easy to not get lost behind the never ending flood of windows being open. The best thing is he even made it open source so people have the ability to build upon and improve his framework to meet their own needs. In short Nautilus condenses the time it would take to make database software. Its amazing how many experiences Mike has been able to have, working with some many different companies and industries while traveling the world. He drives results by focusing on user experience while increasing operational efficiency to increase profits. Growing up listening to rap, he has always been drawn to the east coast style even though he lives on the west side of the country. Listening to rock and emo thru middle school, as her musical taste started to evolve she became more entrenched in the rap community. Being young at the time of some hardships, she turned towards drugs for comfort and resolution. Not wanting to experience that again she decided to pick up her pen next time hardship hit struck and wrote down the struggles instead Having a supportive family has taught Mermer the value of connection and relationship. Being able to feel the support from parents, grandparents and a few close friends really makes her value the fans she does have. When working on a project it all starts with a theme or concept. She then looks for the perfect beat to help the listener feel what she is feeling, then weaves the lyrics in to create a song. It doesn't always come together so easily, at times, long walks are required to help clear the mind and make room for creativity. It's no wonder that old school hip hop culture was ingrained in him. After 7 years in the Army, he decided it was time to get back to his creative roots and retire. You see, he started writing his own raps at 13 and developed the moniker Monarch G. Monarch representing his “social butterfly” personality and reminding himself the majestic like pride and standards he lives with. The G having many meanings, his last name, Gemini his zodiac sign and many other things that tie into the type of person he is and is becoming. The things that really pushed him to make his own music is the desire to express himself and the lack of style and quality in the rap community that he was looking for. Abandoning the title “ rapper “ because of where the culture has led it, he identifies as a lyricist and reflects on his favorites like Ice Cube, J Cole and Snoop Dogg. ( he grew up on the west coast so that west coast style has a special place in his heart ) His writing process is similar to a poet, He often has a feeling that he tethers to a single word and then working on breaking down the emotion more clearly. Performing and recording can become challenging because you have to recreate that head space you had when you wrote the song. Its not always a pleasant place to visit. “ Screw the fear, this is what ive been waiting for my whole life, i cant let fear get in my way “ JTC Beats ( @jtcbeats ) Minneapolis based producer has been honing his craft for over 10 years now, Starting off on the drums at the age of 11. He liked the idea that the drums set the tempo and the beat that really carried the song. Growing up in a major city with no large label presence created an environment that if you want to make it in music, you'll have to do it on your own. Combine that with the harsh winters that force you indoors for many months of the year, you have the perfect situation that removes excuses for not putting in the work. Being naturally introverted, its easy for JTC to bury himself in the studio but he understands the importance of building relationships. Thats why he spends the first 1-2 hours in bed working on his social media before he starts his “work day” He has developed the philosophy of making at least one new beat a day. He doesn't expect everyone to lead to something but it helps develop the momentum required to keep moving and cultivates constancy. As he becomes more known he only works harder. Putting in 12-14 hour days for the last 5 years has started to pay off. He now has people coming to him which gives him the leverage. Working that much can create a bit of a creative block from time to time so to spark new creativity he travels to new areas and creates new experiences. “ everyone is worried about follower ratio, but you following someone is the first step to building a connection. “ Sour Rap ( @sourrap ) was like most children growing up, was excited about something that his parents wouldn't let him enjoy, in his case it was rap. He used to sneak rap videos on MTV and write down the lyrics so he could rap them to himself later. Eventually he would begin writing his own. Coming from a place like New Jersey, where rap doesn't have a mainstream presence, “helps keep you from getting put into a box and gives the freedom to become your own artist. He tells us how social media has been key in growing his fan base, spending time in the virtual community and have conversations with others is what keeps people around. If he had to start all over he would double down on reaching out and meeting new people. “ when you have something going on like a new song or album you need to tell everyone about it and let them know, don't worry if they wont read your DM, its okay that some don't” One thing he reminds us about and maybe the most important thing in the podcast is that when you're working on your passion, you'll treat it the same way you do your day job. So if you work hard at work you'll work hard at your music, if you're lazy at work that will show up too. Sour talks about the value of collaboration. When you have a bunch of people working on the same project it helps because you can be held accountable to do your best work and be pushed to create your best projects. “ Even Kanye has a team of 40 to produce an album “ Be sure to follow Sour Rap with the links below and check out his music. https://ffm.to/sourrap https://www.instagram.com/sourrap/ Connect with us https://www.instagram.com/theunitedpromotion/ https://linktr.ee/TheUp

Growing up in the great state of West Virginia, Josh was a huge fan of sports and played many of them as a child. One of the setbacks of living in a state with a population of only 1.8 million people is there are no professional sports teams. So Josh and his family cheer on the next best thing West Virginia State, where his love for watching and playing basketball has grown. For many seasons Josh would talk to his family over the phone after a big game and have a recap of the events, what the team did right and wrong, exciting moments and so on and so forth. After hearing about Anchor, a distribution platform for podcasters, he took a leap out of his comfort zone and used the same phone and conversation topics to create a fun sports talk show by just hitting record. The fascination part is they cover mainly basketball and college basketball has a relatively short season, so Josh has had to get creative to keep the weekly publication going year round. This his lead him to talk to ex-players of WVU, sports writers and ever bringing other fans on to give them some spotlight. When asking him about his success and ability to stay constant he tells us “ it keep my expectations low, this is a hobby and I enjoy it. I will continue to do it as long as I enjoy it.” This hobby of his has gained traction now getting sponsors for the show and reaching a global audience as Anchor has grown as a platform. As a senior in high school, Isaac worked hard to get good grades which lead to courtship from colleges and scholarships. Free college, most of us would be excited with that opportunity. But he knew deep down it didn't feel right, it wasn't what he wanted or what would make him happy. Instead he took a leap of faith and moved to California with hopes and dreams of creating businesses with some friends, that ended up backing out and leaving him stranded. Most people at this point in their journey would have went home, not Isaac, he decided to miss his return flight on purpose and crashed on couches learning as much as he could from his surroundings and the experience. Not too long after he found himself in the French countryside, move 6500 miles across the world to meet a girl. It didn't go exactly as planned but her and her family still invited him to stay and he learned a lot about living off the land and learning to be happy with having enough. Reflecting during the conversation Isaac puts things into perspective “ Im 19 and if i would have went the traditional route of going to college for marketing or whatever I would be still taking electives and learning about billboards. Trusting myself I've got to travel the world and learn things that can only be taught with experience” One of the many things we see in his story is that he is always true to himself. In the begging his music with the scene he frequent most, sticking the hardcore style until a group of friends came together to test the hip hop waters. He is the only one still around from that group but isn't alone. Vexed has made it almost a mission to surround himself with the right people. Building a network of like minded ambitious people is something he tells us is pinnacle to make it over the long term. He chose a less familiar route to fuel his music career, picking up clippers and going to school to become a barber, common but once he graduated he didn't head to the shop, instead he brings the shop to you. “ if people are willing to spend an extra $5 for a cheese burger I bet they would be willing to spend $20 for a good haircut “ So he tested the waters and the waters provided. He uses his “day job” to found his life while music builds his legacy. Building a team and find new people to collaborate with are the primary focuses for today. He used small goals that add up to the big goals to stay on track. “ I don't want to get into my 40's and look back and wish I did something” that's why he advises everyone, especially if you're younger, if you have an idea, just do it now. His bio is like a growing highlight reel. This was no accident and he is only getting started. If you listen to his message there is a common theme, consistent hard work creates more opportunities, more opportunities to create “luck”. After playing baseball for 14 years and watching his brother who grew up playing basketball for 10, sports has been a major part of his life and he knew he wanted to stay in that environment. Josh shares with us how athletes, big and famous, struggle with all the same mental challenges you and I face. Luckly in todays day and age its easier to have big conversations about important topics like this. Connecting sports to mental health is exactly what Josh does on his podcast and radio show Swoop Radio. Like many of us Josh struggled with anxiety and fear due to circumstances in his life. People like his Grandmother have helped him get through it. It is the reason why it is so important for him to speak up and out about these aliments. Speaking of consistency, Josh's school was visited by a sports producer for ABC. He took it upon himself to stay in contact with this individual and keep working on his own show. Once an internship opened up the producer reached out to let him know and Josh took the rest from there. Once making it to the final 20 candidates Josh was given 5 mins to pitch the producers on why he was the right choice. He was able to beat out all the other candidates including ones with much more experience and better education. Proof that once given the opportunity, all you have to do is take your shot and sometimes it goes in. Now he's back to running his own show while being a radion host at 89.1 WYBF . Building a fan base in his local community is a challenge though because in Philly it's everyone against everyone.** He seems to be at his most creative during the late hours of the night, something we've heard many great writers also talk about. Keeping the distractions and feedback to a minimum during the writing process, J prefers to be in isolation when being creative** One of his unique tactics is creating unique content for different platforms instead reusing everything across the board. This seems tied to his “don't take life too seriously” approach to life. “ you can be a gangster but still laugh and have fun a little” ** In order to collaborate well, you can be too proud J tells us. Approach every connection in a manner of “ how can I help this person and what can I learn from this interaction?”** J has tons of Knowledge bombs so be sure to listen to the full episode. Seems like a drop in the bucket to his 10 year music career where things seem to be happening faster and faster where a great song can come from some luck and 20 minutes of studio time. “Singing is a deep emotional expression for me” Riko tells us when he talks about his love for performing. “It's not about going to class, It's about attending the classes that will help you achieve the life that you want” Kyle (@kylegspeaks) was tired of seeing so many people dissatisfied with life so he began doing what anyone would have done, he asked why and what was causing this? He has a similar path as a lot of us, he was working in corporate america listening to some many of his coworkers complain and be upset. What he found was that there were many tools, resources and businesses wanting to help you become something. Learn a trade, get a degree and analyze your strengths. But what about what you want to be? We never teach children or adults how to choose what's best for them or even most enjoyable. So he started reflecting on his experience and do some research. The conclusion was a book and then a company “To The Next Step” See when looking up at our lives there are many choices and things we are “supposed” to do. All that can create stress and unneeded anxiety. Instead of trying to tackle the long list of life long responsibilities at once he helps people break down life one step at a time. A simple way to look at his process is the quote above. When you can focus on classes being a stepping stone to the life you chose it's much easier to take on and complete. Its interesting to watch Kyle apply some of this to his own life. He needed an audience and the gatekeepers seemed to be holding it ransom so he wrote the book so people could choose to hear his message for themselves. Although social media is important to today's business world, posting daily on instagram won't necessarily get more people on his programs so he chose to use partnerships with local brick and mortar stores. Kyle has been very generous and has decided to give anyone who joins one of his programs a 10% discount if you mention his podcast episode. This is not a paid advertisement but a gift to the audience. We encourage people to take advantage of it. “ the things you do should add to your purpose “ David Yarde (@thedsmy ) seems like a jack of all trades when you first listen to his list of accomplishments and skills. Under further investigation you can understand that he is simply living life based around a set of principles and values David struggled with a lot of the normal childhood challenges we have all faced at some point in time in our life. Whether that was getting into programming and design, not as cool and popular when he was growing up, or getting bullied for not doing what everyone else was doing. He unknowingly developed a valuable skill that has a direct impact on not only his own success but others, blocking out the noise. With everyone being a guru and the big push to develop your own brand its hard to decide what and who to listen to. Where should I spend my time? What strategy should I use? “Its east to listen to everyone and become confused on what to do next”  David recommends tuning almost everyone out and look for those who want to work together to build something great After getting a job in sale he quickly realized he wanted to get back what he enjoyed and that design. Always working on or towards things he loves, that he really has the heart for is one of the things David gives credit for his consistency over the years. Even working on something you have a deep passion for can get redundant and the ideas can stop flowing. When that happens get outside if not outdoors at least outside of your normal projects and surroundings to inspire new creativity. We all have many ideas that can be great ideas in their own right but you have to remain focused. Work on your main focus until completion before taking on too much. Then simply change it. Matt is a teacher is a science teacher in the great country of Canada that has a passion to not only inspire others but arm them with the tools to become. He started with a simple task, Gratitude Everyday, a podcast and social movement encouraging others to live life with more gratitude. He wanted to branch out and cover more topics and felt that using the name “gratitude everyday” wouldn't make sense so he re-branded and relaunched. That was the beginning of “gr8ness everyday” This time Matt branched out into other types of content like video and a more aggressive Instagram presence to supplement the podcast. His YouTube channel has had over 500,000 minutes watched The secret to his success? “ My first year making videos I looked at as skill acquisition. I wasn't planning on anyone paying attention yet. I just wanted to get good and stay consistent. I wanted to make sure on good days I'm putting out content and the worst days you're putting out content” We can feel overwhelmed making content for some many platforms but Matt sees podcasting as a potential “passive” content strategy because he can just strip the audio from the videos he makes for YouTube. Goal setting has been a major theme of highly effective people on the podcast and Matt is know exception. He believes in value based learning and has adopted the 20/20/20 philosophy by Robin Sharma. His next objective is to find ways to monetize so he can expand his content and services. Cole grew up in Georgia and moved to Louisiana to with his grandmother to help care for his great grandmother who was suffering from Alzheimer. It was definitely a culture shock. At the time Louisiana was number one in death by murder and even though there was a large music culture it wasn't collaborative. Georgia has slowly been coming up and a hub for fresh new artists and music styles. This helped the music community come together in a kinda ATL against the world. Artists and producers all willing to work together to put the state on the map. LA people didn't have the same tempo or hustle and definitely not as open minded to work together on projects. At Lafayette university Young Cole met his with which is where his musical journey began. Before she was his wife, shew was the girl he was dating getting dissed by her ex, a local coming up artist. His first single “number one” instantly got the attention of local magazines and media outlets. Now at 22 hes been traveling and doing shows all summer. Working a full time job by day, creating and producing music by evening and promoting by night is how Peter spends most of his time. When he does step away hes hanging out with his boys playing basketball, messing around with music or playing chess. For him being an independent artist means being free. He may not have all the support of a labels team but that's why he has to work so hard to have the same impact. He started a Tumblr page centered around the concept. Little did he know this would be the cornerstone to building the powerhouse brand Gridless Life. After some careful thought and consideration he quit his job and listed all of his belongings to be sold online and trade his 1500 sq ft apartment for his 62 sq ft van and his freedom. “ you have to be willing to push through it, There were a lot of times that I questioned it. What am I doing here, why am I doing this” Joel Lachance ( @lachanceski ) learned at a young age that he had no problem working hard, he just wanted to work for himself and not others. He didn't shy away from employment though, instead he did work that would build skills, not income. He started a cleaning business with his wife in Ontario Canada. The used his drive for business and her experience and passion for cleaning services to create a power packed duo that has been thriving for 5 years now. When you hear about the 17 employees that have now and the expansion of their management team it would be easy to believe that it was smooth sailing but that couldn't be further from the truth. At 22 Joel filled for bankruptcy, during this time he received a job offer that could have turned things around financially for the couple. He explains “maybe I won't go bankrupt if I take the job, maybe I won't. But then I wont get the skills I need for the future.” Even though life has made a turn in their favor because of their hard work Joel believes its important to constantly remind yourself it could disappear tomorrow. He teaches his children gratitude and appreciation by doing volunteer work at homeless shelters. Him and his wife feel like letting them see what some people are going through and what life could be like is the best way to keep them humble. You would think with a thriving company Joel would kick back and take it easy, you couldn't be more wrong. With the time freedom he has created, Joel has started a clothing line to create awareness for mental health and add an additional stream of income. He has also partnered with a local university to record videos for his podcast and YouTube channel.
