How to Die Alone is a new show created by Natasha Rothwell that is now streaming on Hulu. It follows Mel on her journey to finding confidence in herself and discovering who she truly wants to be. It's a great binge watch that is full of lessons for anyone trying to become the highest version of themself. It's also the most recent thing I haven't been able to stop yapping about. In this episode I talk about: Understanding and dealing with loneliness Moving through fear and taking action Friendship breakups Why I love this how and lessons learned from watching it Here is a great article from Very Well Mind that talks about the causes and consequences of loneliness by Kendra Cherry, MSEd. Guess what? This is the very first interview episode for the Words with Me Podcast! I was so excited to have a transparent conversation and learn a bit more about pivoting, dealing with the unexpected, and how to trust your intuition and decision-making. If you didn't already know, I do love some good reality T.V. and in this episode we are (mostly) talking about Love is Blind. If you've watched Season 4 I think all I have to say is Zack, Irina, and Bliss and you will know exactly what I'm talking about today... Reality T.V. is entertaining, but it also inadvertently becomes a weird sort of case study. Plenty of shows call authenticity into question whether it's the authenticity of the participants or the authenticity of the show itself. You could give these shows the benefit of the doubt and believe that the people who are casted on these shows are showing you who they are authentically even when the cameras aren't rolling. What happens when it becomes very clear that someone is in fact not being authentic at all? It's now 2023 and your resident recovering perfectionist has entered the LATE TWENTIES. While a part of that freaks me out (I mean I am pretty close to 30 now….) I also see the opportunity in it. It's very easy to see what other people have done and think that you are doing something wrong. Comparison is a real trap, but it's important to remember that the journey is supposed to be unique and is special to each and every one of us. *The audio is a little choppy at the beginning and towards the end, but we move!* "Self-doubt occurs when we lack confidence or feel incapable of doing things we need to do. People who doubt about themselves experience uncertainty around things they can't control or worry about things not going according to plan." We ALLLL deal with doubt in one way or another, but we does it hold us back, so much? Doubt is an obstacle we all face on this journey and it is up to us to make sure we are making room to grow, learn and surprise ourselves. We are more than capable and uniquely equipped to take on whatever life throws at us. In this episode we get into how doubt can hold us back, why we should overcome doubt, and how we should all run our own race to get to where we want to be. Being open can also cause us to see and experience things we've only dreamed of. In this episode of the podcast we get into opening yourself up to your desires, walking in your brilliance, and touch a bit on reality TV dating shows because who doesn't love some reality TV? I can think of so many things I've experienced when it comes to my own healing journey and mental health. I know that there is one constant I can think of... fear! We all know what fear feels like, but what exactly is fear? According to the Oxford Dictionary, fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat. We experience fear in so many ways and living in fear can cause us to adopt beliefs about ourselves, the world and people around us (limiting beliefs) that aren't healthy and don't really serve our best interest. In this episode I get into my own experiences with fear, share my experiences with insecurity and doubt and provide tips on how to overcome those things. I even get a little vulnerable and talk about one of the toughest periods of my life dealing with ILVEN! I've discussed this in detail on my old blog and I've never really gone into detail here. This was an important episode for me to make and I genuinely hope you can take something great away from it. These can be hard things to deal with, but they can be overcome! When it comes to change it can be a struggle motivating ourselves to change and to do what we can to sustain that change. I know for myself change can be scary and that fear can keep us from outgrowing old versions of ourselves. In this episode of the podcast I get into Learning to celebrate yourself Overcoming old patterns, habits and beliefs Getting older and changing as a person We have to start being our biggest cheerleaders and not our biggest critics and this isn't an overnight thing. This thing takes time, effort, discipline and dedicating to ourselves and our growth. We all are trying to do and be better. Let's learn how to get the hang of this change thing together! Here is an article from Psychology Today called, "8 Reasons Why It's so Hard to Really Change Your Behavior" Change can be hard, but it doesn't have to be impossible. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Words with Me podcast is a space for thought and curiosity. So it's December and while I am preparing to mentally check out for the holidays, I am also looking ahead towards the end of the year. This time brings up so many emotions. There's the expectation of great things to come and also a little bit of anxiety about the unknowns of the year to come. My motto for 2022? "Choose you in 2022!" Looking back on this year I am happy about everything I've accomplished for myself. I feel proud of myself and I hope you feel proud of yourself too. In this episode I get into some of my Goals and intentions, Limiting beliefs (here's a great resource with some worksheets to identify limiting beliefs: https://positivepsychology.com/core-beliefs-worksheets/), and scattered remarks along the way Side note: I think it's hilarious that anytime I think and episode will be quick it's at least 20 minutes. While my goals may not be the grandest, I realize that any goal that I want to reach will take discipline and focus. What are some of your goals for the new year? How are you prepping for the holiday season? ----------------------------------------------- The Words with Me podcast is a space for thought and curiosity. Hey everyone and welcome back to the podcast! I know I've been away for a bit, but it's for a good reason. While I've been away I've actually passed 200 plays! In this episode I talk about quieting the mind, monitoring your self-talk and gaslighting yourself. It's easy for us to get in our heads and be our own worst critic. One of the books that has helped a lot in this area is "the Untethered Soul" by Michael A. Singer. I touch a bit on one of the topics of this book and get a bit into Bachelor in Paradise while I'm at it. These things aren't necessarily related to each other, but you already know I can get a bit into reality TV and I love analyzing different moments. We've all been in a place where maybe we are more critical of ourselves than we need to be. For this reason it's important to employ techniques and coping skills that help us become our own cheerleader rather than our own worst critic. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Words with Me podcast is a space for thought and curiosity. Social media is kind of a big deal now. We need to promote ourselves and our businesses. We use it to share life moments and connect. It can be good and just as bad. What does it mean when social media becomes too much? In this episode I get into managing your social media usage and cultivating confidence, self-worth, and self-esteem. In a world of social media, retweets, followers and likes it can be difficult to feel like what you have to offer the world matters. It can seem that way when you feel you aren't validated, but the key is to figure out how to validate yourself. So you want to get into therapy? First of all, congratulations on making that decision! It takes guts and determination to be able to say you need help and to go out and get it. Therapy has been such a blessing for me and in this episode of the podcast I get into some of the lessons learned from my own healing journey about: Doing things scared Understanding and coping with negative emotions Correction negative though patterns Taking chances, and more I personally used BetterHelp (NOT SPONSORED), but there are plenty of other resources available. The following resources can be used to help you find mental health treatment services, including affordable treatment for those without insurance, in your community: https://www.mhanational.org/finding-therapy Check out this article for affordable resources: https://greatist.com/health/best-online-therapy Other resources: Cerebral Talk Space Therapy for Black Girls Black Female Therapists Inclusive Therapists Therapy in Color Open Counseling Don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it. One thing we have to do in life is learn how to work with difficult people. Whether it's a family member, friend, colleague, etc. we have to be able to make sure we can accomplish our goals and tasks. In my own personal experience there are certain people who will act harshly either because they don't care or they have nothing to lose. In other cases it could be something deeper than that like maybe projecting an insecurity. So how do we deal with people who may have difficult personalities, how do we know when someone may be projecting and what does America's Next Top Model have to do with any of this? It's important to know how to deal with difficult people, but it's just as important to know when we're being difficult and when we're the ones doing the projecting. In this episode I talk about signs of a difficult personality, ways to deal with difficult personalities, coping with strong emotions, knowing when someone is projecting and of course America's Next Top Model. This episode was definitely a fun one to make and I would love to hear about your experiences with difficult personalities or maybe even your thoughts on the show! I enjoy watching reality T.V. as much as the next person, but I always think there's something to learn from observing other people's reactions. Let's talk about a quarter-life crisis. It's something that is real and we should normalize extending grace to ourselves and people who are in their mid 20's and early 30's. Life is hard and it's important to know how to cope when times are tough. We shouldn't be expected to know every detail of our lives and lets not even get into the economy. The factors that keep millennials from being able to fully step into what it is they may really want to do with their lives are endless. We're all going through a process, but can we at least admit that the process can be hard? Please seek out a mental health professional if you can, lean on your support system and remember to give yourself the space you need to get back to doing you and getting out of this funk. (Note: This episode is not sponsored) The Quarterlife Center (which is mentioned in this episode) is dedicated to helping people survive their quarter life crisis and thrive in their lives. One way to know that you are healing and changing for the better is examining the way you treat yourself. How have you been treating yourself lately? What do you think about the person you are becoming? Let's talk about becoming the main character, overcoming self-sabotage and limiting beliefs and choosing ourselves. I can honestly say that I feel a shift between the old ways in which I treated myself and the new ways in which I show myself love and appreciation. I had to just let go of the worries and doubts and realize that I was worthy of good things and that I had everything within me that would help me achieve those things.
