Expressing disappointment should not result in feeling dismissed or rejected.
There's a lot of talk these days about church hurt. People who have been hurt or disappointed by spiritual leaders, spiritual leaders who have been hurt by those they are called to lead. How can someone in spiritual leadership maintain a heart that is tender to those he or she is leading, and simultaneously protect against chronic injury from the saints? Today's guest Ashley Earwood has had her own share of church hurt and joins host Bridgette Tomlin to reveal how the Holy Spirit has trained her to cultivate tough skin with a tender heart.--------------------------------------------------------------------------A church girl at heart, Ashley has volunteered in just about every area of the church you can imagine and has faithfully served alongside her husband in full-time pastoral ministry for the past 15 years. She currently serves full-time as part of the Senior Leadership Team at Bear Creek Church in Lodi, California where she also leads the Women's Ministry. She's about to celebrate 5 years of ONE Conference, a local women's conference she founded & hosts, centered around the topic of Biblical unity. She's been married to her college sweetheart, Paul, for 20 years and they have three spunky children, ranging in ages 10-15. A self-proclaimed 'reluctant pastor's wife' herself, Ashley has a heart to encourage ministry wives and is passionate about encouraging & equipping ALL women to find their place and run their race within the Body of Christ. Let's have some real talk today. Life can be a whirlwind sometimes, am I right? If we don't have strong roots and tough skin we will easily be pushed around like those blow up stick people at the car lots trying to attract customers. Completely unstable! I've been reminded recently of how important it is for us to develop a tough skin and strong roots. There will be battles we face, there will conflict within our souls, and conflicts that arise from those around us. We will experience ups and downs, it's inevitable. But we can either be swept under by the waves of life or learn to surf these waves that will in fact come. Being a christian women these days isn't just this pretty title, or a cute little lady, being a christian woman requires grit, fierceness, strength, resilience, it requires getting your hands dirty, standing firm, not buckling down, staying true to your convictions, loving those who hate you, being selfless and sacrificial, dying to self and living for Christ and like I said before, strong roots and tough skin! It's not easy, especially in our world and culture today. And let me tell you this unpopular opinion, people will not like you! Some may not like you because your simply a christian, some may not like you just for fun, some may not like you because of your appearance, your family dynamic, your morals, your parenting style and so on. You really never know. Nobody wants to be disliked, it sucks. But what I have realized more and more as I've been getting older and experiencing more life is this, you have to get use to people sometimes not liking you and sometimes there is no good reason for it. If you don't have strong roots and tough skin, this will eat you alive. It will cause you to doubt yourself, feel insecure and be swayed by the opinion and thoughts of others. But who here actually has time for that? All of you have a billion things you're juggling, motherhood, home life, work, errands and so on. And as a grown mature woman, you don't have time to be distracted by the whirlwinds of life and the random haters that may arise. Granted, we should always always have self reflection and look inwardly to ensure that our haters weren't created due to our actions but in some instances that isn't the case and you must learn to know the difference. To be a true disciple of Jesus, we must be tough-skinned while at the same time, we are exhorted by Jesus to turn the other cheek when being persecuted. How can we do that? Only through the power of the Holy Spirit within us. By Marilyn Bartlett

understanding that the reason others cannot accept me for who i am, is really just because they cannot accept themselves either. for instance, when i feel super judged by people- i have come to a place where i hope that they can live authentically too, rather than judging back.how empathy can help us deal with hurtful comments & shield us from taking things personally. softness & having emotional intelligence is secretly the toughest skin out there. it's saying that you cannot hurt me because i love the softness in me that the world taught you to hate. and i can teach you the discipline to do the same! explaining behavior, not justifying it or making excuses.using our arms to restrain with a hug rather than firing a shot, even when they deserve it (note how i said restrain rather than enable)! stopping violence at all levels through accountability via emotional connection. explaining that “when you did this, it hurt me” is far more powerful than hurting back. & how this peace should be displayed, not just through the way we handle our interpersonal conflicts, but also through our attitudes advocating against gun violence. it is important to start inwards (self reflection) with our anti-violence work, and then use this change to advocate outwards. otherwise we miss a crucial step towards unification, and walking the talk!ending gun violence, through embracing our soft skin- rather than our shields.

Jamie Toyama had started a business so she could physically be there for her kids and her husband. After starting a heated debate based on an article stating Millenials are too entitled to take unpaid work, she and Stephanie get an ‘elder millennial's' perspective on what it means to work for your worth.. Given that millennials have actually been in the workforce for 10-20 years. Then we get into how she uses her personal experience with eczema to be a “skinfluencer” (a term Kaehla totally made up which refers to advocating for self love and beauty in skincare). The takeaway is that bad b****s have tough skin due to skin conditions. On this week's show, freelance writer Christa Lesté-Lasserre talks with host Sarah Crespi about the scientists working on the restoration of Notre Dame, from testing the changing weight of wet limestone, to how to remove lead contamination from four-story stained glass windows. As the emergency phase of work winds down, scientists are also starting to use the lull in tourist activity to investigate the mysteries of the cathedral's construction. Also this week, Felipe Quiroz, an assistant professor in the biomedical engineering department at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University, talks with Sarah about his paper on the cellular mechanism of liquid-liquid phase separation in the formation of the tough outer layer of the skin. Liquid-liquid phase separation is when two liquids “demix,” or separate, like oil and water. In cells, this process created membraneless organelles that are just now starting to be understood. In this work, Quiroz and colleagues create a sensor for phase separation in the cell that works in living tissue, and show how phase separation is tied to the formation of the outer layers of skin in mice. Read the related Insight. This week's episode was produced with help from Podigy. Listen to previous podcasts. About the Science Podcast Download a transcript (PDF).
