    Cycle Breakers Part 4: A Foundation of Equity, Believe the Need Behind the Behavior

    Something you hear a lot in the parenting coach circles is "meet the need behind the behavior." This means that no behavior is bad, rather simply a communication that there is a need. I take this to the next level and require we "believe" the need behind the behavior is  valid and worthy of being met no matter the way it's communicated. When we question the needs and insert our thoughts and decide whether our children really need what they are asking for that's where it gets messy.  Understanding that we all have needs and our needs are valid and inherently worthy of being met is a crucial piece of healing our own wounds and teaching our kids to honor themselves and others.  In this episode I share the importants of understanding the different layers of human needs from basics like food, water & safety to love & belonging.  The understanding of these layers, not only helps us learn how to move from surviving to thriving but also leads to viewing the world in a more equitable way.  This conversation not only feels necessary, but timely in shifting the communal conciously.  The conversation of the inherent worthiness of needs being met that we have in our homes, helps instill a family value of equity as our children start to relate to the greater community.    Want to learn more about how I tie equity into my parenting framework?     The secret to emotional security is not having your emotional needs met all the time. It's creating predictability for the nervous system that even when your needs aren't met in the moment or you don't feel connected to another human in the moment, that eventually it will happen.    Kids don't need you to be a perfect parent they just need to know that no matter what that you will be there for them and love them and meet their emotional needs ENOUGH of the time.     I invited my friend Jessica to share her Evolution of Healing Journey.  Jessica is an astrologer, coach, hypnotherapist and the cutest human ever.  This conversation was so rich.  We talked about loss as the catalyst for change, giving yourself permission to have boundaries, leaning on nature as a resource for healing and how Jessica calls on the support of her ancestors. I also loved the way Jessica described caring for herself in hard moments as a wise adult caring for a child and meeting their specific needs.   Disclaimer: We talked about loss of a family member during the pandemic. We also talk displacement due to war. I also want to acknowledge the nuance and layers of this conversation and being a white bodied person experiencing trauma then ending up in a colonized space. That there is a privilege in finding safety after trauma. And this to me as a trauma informed coach and human is necessary to mention. And I also believe these conversations are necessary to have on our path to healing. Grappling with all the layers that exist within in.     The Importance of Repair in Parenting

    There is so much parenting advice out there it can be overwhelming.  My intention in the trauma informed approach I provide is to give a framwork that allows our full humanity.  In this episode I talk about the piece I belive are necessary to be trauma informed in your parenting approach.  The most important in my opinion a focus on Repair. I share the shifts I have seen in my own family with this approach.     Ep 43: Learning to Exist for Myself w/ Amanda Schwechel

    This episode holds a special place in my heart.  In her work Amanda is an antiracism educator and you should definitely follow her account @arborandwood. I learn from her every day in that space, but the biggest impact she had on me was how she shared herself on her personal account.  Amanda is someone who has been a part of my own healing. Technically she is a stranger on the internet but watching her so vulnerably share her grief and joy in the way she does in her online space showed me what was possible for me too.  Trigger warning: In this episode we talk about abuse. We talked about the empowering and also the really hard parts of healing from abuse and leaving an abusive relationship.  I think this episode is extremely powerful because when women stand in their truth and say the things out loud and start making decisions from that place, it can inspire other women and femmes to do the same.  Realizing you are living a life you don't actually want can be hard. Amanda shares so tenderly the struggles of marrying and having kids young and having to figure out who you are when you have never really been on your own while simultaneously healing from abuse. I know many with similar circumstances can relate to this.  I want you to take note how she set boundaries and put protections in place to provide herself with the support she needs as she is stepping into learning to exist for herself.     Piggy Backing on my conversation with Joy last week because I'm basically obsessed with her. If you haven't listened yet please do.    This whole concept of asking ourselves who's voice is this really? when we aren't speaking to ourself with kindness has led me down a spiral of how to work on not only having more compassionate self talk for ourselves but how to make it so our children don't have to do this work in their future.  Or atleast less of this work.  Trauma happens when we internalize the failures of our environment as personal failures. This is why we form negative self talk. We think things are our fault.  So how do we prevent our kids from taking on the failures of their environment?  We do our own internal work to release our own shame by finally placing the blame where it belongs and healing our nervous system. We help our children understand their feelings and needs are valid and necessary and that sometimes life is really shitty but you are there for them to hole space for their whole humanity.  Easy peasy right?     HOLY SH*T what did we NOT talk about in this episode.    My beautiful kind friend Joy graceously shared her Evolution of Healing Journey with me.    From the moment she realized things were no longer working to changing everything from the way she talked to herself, her boundaries, and her relationship with receiving support there is a little something for everyone in this episode.    My absolute favorite part was when she shared in look into a very specific journal practice for when she is struggling. I wanted to share these tender questions with you here so you can impliment this practice if it feels nourishing.    To hear it in Joys voice tune in around the 60 min mark.    First she shuts out any noise that is sending her messages of not enoughness. What Are you making this struggle mean about you?  Who's voice is that, that is saying you aren't doing enough?  Can you still love yourself if it doesn't look like xyz?     My least favorite parenting advice as a trauma informed coach is "Just be Present." The idea that all our kids need is our presents is yeah a nice idea, but this advice forgets about a very real trauma response that was necessary to survive. Disassociation.  So for those of us who's bodies chose to completely disconnect in order to survive(me), "Just be Present" can feel like climbing a mountain. And leave us feeling a lot of shame over something we have little control over.  So of course we want to take small steps to learning to be more connected and present every day.     In todays episode I shared my personal experience in noticing the difference between regualr old therapy and coaching(which aren't bad) and trauma informed therapy and coaching(which work better for me). I now incorperate the trauma informed lens in everything I do. Espeically when it comes to settng boundaries. Over the next few episodes I will be sharing different approaches to setting boundaries based on who we are and the different stories we tell ourselves about why we can't set boundaries or tend to set too many. Today's focus is on those of us who's protective trauma responses are fight or flight. This usually leads to us being called b*tches. Because we are fighters or apear to not care. In reality we have just been let down so much that we feel we can only depend on ourselves to protect our little baby tender hearts. Now don't get me wrong here there is nothing wrong with being a B. I am all about reclaiming that shit. But often what happens is when we do want to get close to someone it get's in the way of the connection we deeply want whether we like to admit or not.     I have a love hate relationship with the word resilience. It used to mean pushing through no matter what. But when I did that it did more harm than good and I felt less capable. Building true resilience comes from learning how to identify where the edge of our comfort zone is or in the trauma informed world we call it the window of tolerance. Understanding what the window of tolerance is, and how to use this information to heal and build true resilience has led to massive transformation in my own life. So naturally I want to share it with you. In this episode I share some real life examples of climbing out of a hole I was in and how different it felt compared to how I dealt in the past.     When we grow up in an environment where our emotional needs aren't met by our caregivers, we often learn that their emotions and needs are more important than ours. This programs us to people please and live in a way that serves them. So how do we start to relive ourselves of this burden? It's fucking hard man. Especially if your emotions have also been gaslit. I have found that learning to check in with ourselves and check our reality is key to letting go of guilt and feeling overly responsible for others.     What is toxic spirituality? I say it's the misinterpretation of spirit and purpose in a way that makes people think they have the authority to  others what they should or shouldn't do in order to be spiritual or aligned.  If you have ever heard that the way you think or act is the cause of something bad happening or if you have ever felt like if you just could be more positive life would be better, that is internalized toxic spirituality. And this shit is everywhere. From the book The Secret to people believing the reason your not making more money is because you are manifesting wrong. (FYI There is no wrong way to manifest. It's about learning to love yourself in order to receive. Which happens when you heal your trauma BTW.     So I always hesitate talking about mind set work because I think often times it's presented as the thing to do end of story. In my personal experience it's just the first step. And Also I can't deny that there have been some pretty huge shift in the way I think that blew my mind, and led to living a much more expansive authentic life when I embodied them. To me embodiment is the piece that many main stream coaches often miss talking about that is the real hard part of mindset work. Now don't get me wrong these coaches are probably helping their clients get there but not knowing that you can't force it which can often lead to a shame spiral when you aren't getting there fast enough or you arent believing what you want about yourself fast enough.     Are you sick of talking about boundaries yet? The reason I'm on such a roll is because I truly belive that boundaries not only create more time, energy, and closer relationships but they are necessary on the healing journey. I grew up in an environment where boundaries weren't safe. Trying to set boundaries went against the norm of people pleasing and doing what you are told. As I tried to set boundaries as a way to protect myself, they would put me in a position where I would be reprimanded, shamed, or even shunned. It wasn't until I was no longer in that environment that I slowly but surely started to set boundaries in a healthier way. It was not an easy road but the more I learned boundardy setting skills and became more emotionally intelligent the more positive changes I was able to make in my life. Boundaries helped me create the physical, emotional and mental space I needed to truly process wtf had happened in my upbringing and fully step into learning to heal. Todays episode is my personal ode to boundaries as the key piece that lead me to where I am today. Of course of circumstances may look different but my experience from a trauma stand point was very human.     Coming at you with some real time life lessons this week. Last week in therapy my therapist asked me If was modeling the expectations I have of others. Oh gut punch right? It's always hard to look at ourselves especially when it triggers shame. There is a way to stay aligned with who tf you are even when you misstep and don't practice what you preach. Sometimes we get stuck on a particular path and can't see what could possibly be a short cut because our navigation system is insisting on this way. Or what if your navigation system is only taking you a way that has felt safe in the past and won't steer you into the unknown because you are too scared.     Whether you call it self sabotage, imposter syndrome or blame yourself for not doing it right, we all hit obstacles on our growth journeys. The truth is all of these things come from the same place. They come from past experiences that are now affecting your present life and trauma. But I've done the mindset work and I'm going to therapy and I've been doing all the things why do I still feel like this? I asked myself these questions for years. I was missing this one piece. This one thing that most coaches are forgetting about. They are forgetting that our body remembers everything. That although we have changed our self talk that doesn't necessarily mean that our nervous system feels safe as we enter into doing big, scary, new things. Knowing how to reset your nervous system and reconnect your brain and body, is the one skill that will get you farther than any mindset hack ever will. We need mind set work of course but the beauty of this skill is that the mindset shift is a natural by product of calming the nervous system where as changing your mindset does not have the same affect. Both must work hand in hand to truly break all your cycles and remove obstacle when they get in the way. In order to have lasting change and trust in your self, your intuition and your growth you have to feel safe. There is only room for trust in safe spaces. I said change. When we focus on our own work it will cause 1 of 2 reactions in people. They will either be inspired and change and grow with you or get triggered af. I have learned time and time again that my hardest relationships run much smoother when I am focusing on myself and connecting fully with who I truly am. Because that person draws in the kind of relationships I want and repells the rest. I get vulnerable in this episode because I'm sharing details about my marriage and when I'm embodying this concept it goes much better.
