I had the honor to chat with SXSW President and Chief Programming Officer Hugh Forrest to explore how one of the world's most influential festivals continues to lead with connection, resilience, and innovation. We discuss how SXSW has evolved, how accessibility and inclusion are prioritized, and what it takes to create space for diverse voices in tech, media, and culture. As someone who attended panels focused on happiness, resilience, and branding, this experience was very personal—and a reminder that when we show up with purpose, the right doors open.Check out http://sxsw.com to learn more about the festival.Send us a textFollow me on social media at @offthecrutch, or e-mail me at offthecrutch@gmail.com

This was such a beautiful conversation about resilience and healing. Holly is a UW graduate, TBI Survivor and founder of Neuro Wellness Community, where connections empower resilience. Her own journey through adversity, surviving a severe Traumatic Brain Injury and two week coma and the lifetime recovery through trauma and healing led her to see the impact the incredible resources surrounding her had on her life. Through her studies in Community Psychology it was confirmed that there was a link between brain health and community support. This launched her dream to share resources and empower others towards resilience. She founded Resilience Resourcing in 2019 which is now, Neuro Wellness Community. She hosts the Resilience Resourcing Podcast where she's had the honor of spotlighting stories of resilience from celebrities in film and music, to national spokeswomen, doctors and all in between who've overcome adversity in reaching for their dreams, sharing their "real on their way to resilience". In addition, Neuro Wellness Community holds annual Virtual Panels with leading experts to empower others through education on topics relating to resilience and holistic brain health. Finally, Neuro Wellness Community organizes and hosts retreats for connection and empowering experiences with key note speakers, music, a network of holistic therapeutic modalities, food and fun! The first retreat was held in 2019 and the second is in the works, stay tuned! Holly loves Jesus and knows without His provision in her life, she would not be where she is today and firmly believes everyone can have Jesus and a therapist too! Fueling Healthy Thoughts: Overcoming Darkness and Transformative Resilience In this episode I have some raw and vulnerable moments about this year and reflect on what I believe I need to work on with my own stinkin' thinkin'. Being more intentional with what we feed our minds is essential in turning things around, creating hope in our lives, and being a light in the darkness. It was recorded on MLK Day and I was inspired by his memory and his ability to be the man outside the box pushing through oppressive norms and spurring on all people of color to dare to dream bigger, and believe that more is possible. Here's a run down of this episode Reflecting on the challenges of the past year and the struggle to maintain balance in life. Drawing inspiration from Martin Luther King Jr. and the power of intention. Connecting with the Audience: Acknowledging the shared difficulties many face, emphasizing the feeling of being overwhelmed. Encouraging listeners not to feel alone in their struggles. The Four Nutriments: Exploring Thich Nhat Hanh's concept of the four nutrients (Edible food, Sense impressions, Volition, and Consciousness). Emphasizing the importance of identifying sources of suffering and finding peace and joy. Navigating Personal Struggles: Sharing personal struggles with podcasting, career decisions, and the challenges of parenting. Expressing empathy for those facing overwhelming situations and the difficulty of finding options. MLK Day Reflection: Reflecting on personal connection to Martin Luther King Jr. and the power of intention in creating positive change. Mentioning the influence of spoken words, particularly MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech. Coping Strategies and Tools: Introducing coping strategies, including mindful eating and being aware of sense impressions. Discussing the impact of volition on happiness and the importance of cultivating healthy desires. Addressing the role of consciousness in transforming painful events and finding enlightenment. Focusing on Healing and Positivity: Highlighting the challenge of podcasting about abuse without inadvertently perpetuating negativity. Exploring the power of focus and intention in creating positive change. Expressing a desire to shift the podcast's focus towards healing, love, peace, and thriving. Inviting Positive Stories: Sharing the intention to invite guests who have overcome darkness and transformed their lives. Expressing the need for positive role models and stories of turning life around. Acknowledging personal challenges and the importance of collective healing. Closing Thoughts: Offering tools for managing anxiety and promoting well-being, including heart math techniques and grounding practices. Sending love, hope, and thoughts for a brighter future to the listeners. Encouraging subscriptions, reviews, and engagement to build a community focused on healing. Mentioned in this episode: Thich Nhat Hahn's "How to Focus" beautiful book. Inner Balance Heart Math App for heart brain coherence and learning to ground and become less anxious. And help the collective energy of your family, home, town, the World. Earthing, grounding mat for grounding while indoors. Just plug it into a grounded outlet. Hey there! Have you ever thought about how we discover ourselves through the different voices we try on in life? I'm excited to share an amazing conversation in this episode where we explore exactly that. I sit down with Adrienne Shamszad, a talented musician I got introduced to through my friend Ned Buskirk from You're Going To Die. Adrienne's story is truly inspiring—she found her true voice when she began losing it. That struggle led her on a journey to uncover the ways she'd been silenced, and it changed everything for her. We dive deep into Adrienne's artistic process, how she channels her art, and the mind-body connection in her journey as an artist. But it's more than that; it's about growing up as an artist, finding paths by tapping into something higher, and letting that energy flow through her art. One thing Adrienne said that stuck with me is, "Suffering can sometimes be this incredible portal in life, pushing us toward awakening or awareness." That hit hard, reflecting on how challenges can shape us in unexpected ways. Join us as we uncover Adrienne Shamszad's story—a story of resilience, artistry, and the search for authenticity. We'll explore how she found her voice amid life's hurdles and how her journey might resonate deeply with your own. Come along and let's discover together the transformative power of self-discovery through art and resilience.

Mental health has been a challenge for educators for years and the pandemic only increased the needs of students and educators. Scared and unhappy kids can't learn. In this episode we talk to a middle school administrator who has been bringing greater awareness, sharper focus, and useful practices to students and educators in her school and district.Courtney Rau Rogers is a middle school Assistant Principal in suburban Boston. For the last 7-8 years she has been studying trauma-informed instruction, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), and looking to find ways to increase students' social-emotional skills and coping mechanisms. Her school uses their advisory program to deliver instruction and create small groups to make connections. This helps build resiliency and coping skills. This focused and intentional part of the school schedule works by providing simple tools that target the skill areas students are lacking, such as self-regulation, persistence, and confidence. The advisory program uses daily themes with sample activities that teachers can use or adapt for their own groups. The school uses Sown to Grow as a tool to help keep fingers on the pulse of the population overall as well as on individuals who may need support.ResourcesFostering Resilient Learners: Kristen Souers and Pete Hall, Relationship, Responsibility, & Regulation and Fostering Reslient Learners. Over the years in business coaching, the one thing I have found is that Peak Perfomers pursue their passion no matter what. They never give up, even when the cards seem stacked against them or they face one hurdle after another. We're taking about Reslience - this isn't just the ability to persevere, it's also an outlook we can cultivate to stay focused on the important things in life rather than what is most urgent. Keeping ourselves being carried away by negative emotions. Resilience is our abilty to deal with setbacks. The more resilient we are, the easier it will be to pick ourselves up and get back to what gives meaning in our lives...If you wish to 'fast track' this recording you can 'fast forward' as follows:"What's the worst that could happen?" time 6:52Beyond resilience: Antifragility time 17:46Recommended Reading:The Power of Now, Eckhart TolleAntifragile: things that gain from disorder, Nassim Nicholas Taleb

On May 12, 2015, Geralyn Ritter, Senior Vice President at pharmaceutical company Merck, was flung from her train car in Amtrak's deadliest train derailment since 1987. Of 238 passengers, over 200 people were injured and eight were tragically killed. Geralyn was the most critically injured of those who survived. It took just seconds for Geralyn to go from being a senior executive at one of America's largest companies to an immobilized ICU patient facing an uncertain future. Despite intense pain, years of recovery, and a continuing struggle with trauma, Geralyn came to view her situation as an act of grace – an undeserved, unmerited gift – that empowered her to rebuild her body and re-establish her career, “bone by bone.”We invited Geralyn Ritter, now Executive Vice President of External Affairs, ESG, and Sustainability at Organon, a new women's health organization and spinoff from Merck, to talk about her recovery and return to work through the lens of gratitude, grief, resilience, and, of course, purpose. Gossip is casual or unconstrained conversation or reports about other people, typically involving details that are not confirmed as being true. “First and foremost, we need to be the adults we want our children to be. I have a love hate relationship with the word resilience. It used to mean pushing through no matter what. But when I did that it did more harm than good and I felt less capable. Building true resilience comes from learning how to identify where the edge of our comfort zone is or in the trauma informed world we call it the window of tolerance. Understanding what the window of tolerance is, and how to use this information to heal and build true resilience has led to massive transformation in my own life. So naturally I want to share it with you. In this episode I share some real life examples of climbing out of a hole I was in and how different it felt compared to how I dealt in the past. Understanding true resilience was crucial. Hope you Enjoy. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Dr. Stephen Sideroff. Dr. Stephen Sideroff is an internationally recognized expert in resilience, optimal performance, addiction, neurofeedback, and alternative approaches to stress and mental health. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry & Biobehavioral Sciences, with a joint appointment in the Department of Rheumatology at UCLA's School of Medicine, as well as the Director of the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Ethics. For over 40 years, Dr. Sideroff has been passionate about studying and understanding resilience and optimal performance. He has developed and established innovative models of behavior and treatment approaches for restoring physical, emotional, and mental balance and effectiveness in North America, Europe, and Asia. In this episode, Dr. Sideroff talks about why we decided to dedicate his life to resilience. Unfortunately, many people have great resistance to managing their stress. That's why Dr. Sideroff discusses the importance of keeping your nervous system in a good place, how your childhood environment plays a role in your resilience, and unpacking the unconscious to face difficult feelings. Tune in as we dive into Dr. Sideroff's Resilience Assessment Booklet and how to measure a critical aspect of your physiology. ng May 9th 2022. [00:35] Why Dr. Sideroff Decided To Dedicate His Life To Resilience Dr. Sideroff has always been interested in studying the brain mechanisms of learning and memory. He was interested in finding the brain's connections, so he started a career as a brain researcher. Eventually, he started doing stress management workshops for organizations and corporations. After the workshops, people felt inspired to make changes in their lives. A few months later, very few people actually followed through with those changes. Down the road, Dr. Sideroff began to identify why we have great resistance to managing our stress. [05:45] Keeping The Nervous System In A Good Place Through Resilience When we think about resilience, we think about the ability to bounce back and recover after a stressful event. If you view the world as dangerous, you expect a problem to arise. When you anticipate danger, your body mobilizes for that danger. If you're continually activating your nervous system in preparation for danger, you're not allowing your body to recover fully. The ability to bounce back is part of resilience. [09:40] How The Environment of Our Childhood Will Affect Our Resilience Primitive Gestalt patterns are how our brain develops throughout childhood based on the lessons of our childhood environment. Our brain literally forms its circuitry based on those childhood lessons. We adapt to our childhood environment. Then our adaptation gets locked in. If our childhood was dangerous, we as adults continue to think the world is just as dangerous. Resilience is about being able to think outside the box and adapt to our current environment. Many of the consequences of our childhood are not something that we're always conscious about. [14:50] Unpacking The Unconscious To Live A Happier Life The first step in unpacking the unconscious is a willingness to face complicated feelings, emotions, and issues. Next, you have to be accepting of whatever emotions you have. You can love your mother and father yet still be angry at them. Living a happier and healthier life is about a willingness to grow up. [20:50] The First Three Pillars From The Path: Mastering the Nine Pillars of Resilience and Success What is the most crucial relationship that you have? It's the relationship with yourself. Consider these questions: Are you critical and judgmental of yourself? Do you put yourself down? Are you loving, accepting, and compassionate toward yourself? The first pillar is all about how you treat yourself and then comparing that to the healthy or ideal way of treating yourself. You can do this by becoming consciously aware of your thoughts. The second pillar is your relationship with others. Are you able to tell the difference between healthy and toxic relationships? The third pillar is a relationship with something more significant; this extends to the community at large. [33:40] Autonomic Dysregulation Syndrome and The Process of Aging Dr. Sideroff has proposed an actual diagnostic code which he calls autonomic dysregulation syndrome. 70 to 80% of visits to the doctor's office result from this autonomic dysregulation syndrome. It underlies whether you have headaches, high blood pressure, or autoimmune disease. We now have direct evidence that stress speeds up the aging process. All illness is simply an expression of the aging process. Luckily, resilience is one way of slowing down the aging process. [38:45] Get The Resilience Assessment Booklet From Dr. Stephen Sideroff Here's a link to The Resilience Assessment Booklet: https://drstephensideroff.com/resilience-assessment-booklet-395/ Dr. Sideroff has created a comprehensive model for living in balance and health. His assessment booklet identifies the nine components of his model and gives a brief and readily understood description of these nine elements of a foundation for resilience. It then presents a 40 item questionnaire and self-scoring profile that allows you to gauge your areas of strength along with those areas needing more significant development. [43:45] The Connection Between Heart Rate Variability and Gratitude Your heart rate is never on a constant level. If it is constant, that's a sign that you are unhealthy. You want to have a heart rate change in a very systematic way. Heart rate variability links your cardiovascular system, nervous system, respiratory system, and emotions. As you breathe in, your heart rate speeds up because you're activating the sympathetic branch of your nervous system. One of the things that facilitate optimal heart rate variability is gratitude. Personal trauma can take many forms, including what Dr. Randall Bell calls the “difficult Ds”: death, divorce, disease, disaster, and destruction. But any circumstances that you're having difficulty processing and moving beyond can be considered trauma, he explains. “Trauma affects us all at some point in time,” Dr. Bell said. “But the good news is, we can get through it and actually heal from it.” In his latest book, Post-Traumatic Thriving: The Art, Science, & Stories of Resilience, Dr. Bell draws upon his decades of experience and scientific research to deliver a three-stage framework — Dive, Survive and Thrive — that can help readers process their trauma, make the conscientious decision to accept help and move forward, and eventually, tap into the energy generated by that trauma to achieve more than they ever thought possible. In Post-Traumatic Thriving, he shares stories of real people (many of them, like Leo Fender, are familiar) who were able to move beyond trauma and thrive in the aftermath, including: • A deaf man with a glass eye invented the electric guitar and became a household name, remarkably wealthy and most importantly, happy. • A convicted murderer took responsibility for the damage he caused, graduated with honors from college, became a minister and turned around the hearts of the most hardened criminals. • A girl born with cerebral palsy landed the world's first starring role on national television and spoke at the White House three times. • A woman hid in a basement for years and lost her entire family in the Holocaust. She eventually found true love and paints stunning artwork. • The sister of a murder victim helped millions of women in toxic domestic relationships. • A woman's car crash resulted in an addiction to prescription drugs, a divorce, a loss of her children and a cot in a homeless shelter. She has rebuilt it all back and more. • A man set to go to the Olympics had his hopes dashed by Jimmy Carter and went on to build a worldwide business empire. Dr. Bell juxtaposes outcomes of scientific studies with these stories to reveal common denominators among “thrivers,” revealing to readers a healthy path toward healing and a life where post-traumatic thriving is possible. As a socio-economist, Dr. Randall Bell has consulted on more disasters on earth than anyone in history. His clients include the Federal Government, State Governments, International Tribunals, major corporations and homeowners. Dr. Bell believes that “the problem is not the problem — the problem is how we react to the problem.” Often called the “Master of Disaster,” Dr. Bell is squarely focused on authentic recovery and resilience. His research has been profiled on major television shows and featured in numerous magazines and the international media. More information can be found at www.posttraumaticthriving.com. This week Oven-Ready HR Podcast guest believes that Generation Z workers and the demographic cohorts that follow, are woefully underprepared for the workplace. Elan Divon a Harvard-trained author, speaker and founder of Divon Academy; an organization that prepares students and professionals for success in an age of disruption believes Gen Z workers lack critical soft skills and have become so over reliant on technology that they could be the last generation to be considered as fully-fledged human beings. As an HR or recruitment professional, do you think Generation Z workers are ready for the workplace?Finishing Schools were popular in the 19th Century when young women were taught social graces as preparation for the entry into society. Fast forward 150 years and is a similar approach needed for workers entering the workplace?Elan Divon believes the next 10 years will see the fastest acceleration of technology the planet has ever seen and the effect on the workplace will be profound. Many Generation Z workers he claims lack basic soft skills such as creativity, emotional intelligence, problem solving and collaboration. Divon maintains these skills will become even more important in the years ahead given that automation and technology will render many roles obsolete and only those positions requiring a human intervention will survive. He says his work is underpinned by numerous studies detailing HR's frustration with the ability of Generation Z workers to maintain strong interpersonal relationships, demonstrate resilience, collaborate with others and cope with stress. He cites the example of basic communication; when a Generation Z worker says they'll call you, this really translates to I'll send you a text or an instant message. What you'll discover in this Oven-Ready HR Podcast episode:How a decision to buy an ice cream for his date started him on an incredible journey;Elan's passion for anthropology, ancient texts, philosophy and mythology and how these combine into 'rites of passage'His fears that Generation Z have become too reliant on technologyHis sadness that there are so few rites of passages now for many young people leaving them unprepared for work; The major skills he sees Generation Z lacking such as creativity and emotional intelligence; An overview of the services and approach of the Divon Academy So do we need a Finishing School for Generation Z workers?Resources:https://divonacademy.comhttps://ovenreadyhr.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/podcasthost/Twitter: @OvenHrTell me me what YOU thinkTell me what you think of this interview. Yesterday as Joshua and I were walking our Banner Dog, I said, “I’m tired of being resilient. I’m tired of being flexible.” Do you ever feel that way? You just want to sit on the floor and just pout? I sure do. There are days when I feel on top of the world and there are days when I feel like I am standing in the middle of that quote “If you’re dreams don’t scare you, they’re not big enough.” The fear of the unknown, the uncontrollable, the lack of structure really freaks me out. So, I wanted to invite you into my process on today's episode of Wholistic Hearts...when I feel like I just don’t have it in me to be flexible or resilient. Need someone to help coach you through? I'd love to be your coach. Check it out here: www.kristinfieldschadwick.com/services Upcoming Events to Check Out: COMING SOON "Reengage Your Heart" Course will be available ONLINE! In todays episode I had the pleasure to talk to Tina Aswani Omprakash from Own your Own Crohns. Tina is someone who was diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease 13 years ago and has gone on to become an IBD Blogger and patient advocate. Not only has Tina needed to deal with Crohns disease, but also an additional 22 diagnoses including gastroparesis, post-surgical irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), vestibular migraines, vertigo, inflammatory arthritis and pelvic floor dysfunction . And lets not forget the associated mental health challenges including anxiety, depression and medial PTSD. I met Tina last year in May at the Digestive Diseases Week meeting in San Dieago and have stayed connected with her via the social media platforms. Tina has been very open in talking about her past and present challenges in managing her multiple diagnoses in order to help and support others. She has done such an incredible job that in 2019, she won the Healio Disruptive Innovator Award for the Patient Voice category at the American College of Gastroenterology’s conference in San Antonio. You can reach out and connect with Tina via her blog posts on ownyourcrohns.com or her facebook and twitter pages under the same name. This is a story of incredible resilience. I hope you get a lot of value from listening to my conversation with Tina Aswani Omprakash
Warning Scott's story isn't for the faint of heart. This is a story of resilience that shows how a young boy that faced tremendous abuse doesn't let the faults of his patents color his life forever. While many people would have crumbled under the abuse that Scott endured, by grace and grit Scott is alive today fulfilling his roles as a husband, father, and industry leader. If you have a story of abuse, Scott's account will inspire and encourage. Have you ever found yourself in a pickle that was more sour than you could stand? We all have at a time or two in our lives. During these moments I've gotton to the point of saying this tiny phrase that helps me to look up "you can't sit in this." This phrase is a little reminder to myself that I know there is more, I know I have the power to get the more, and that staying here is not an option nor is it the Divine plan. Sour pickles are sour pickles no matter what end you take a bite of the same sour taste will remain. However, we can dice that baby up and make a whole new recipe. That is what we do when we bounce-up from setbacks. We learn a new way of usng the information or experiences we encounter, we respond in a way that is victorious instead of in a way that is victim orientated. There is an art to this Bouncing-Up practice.

This week on Love (and Revolution) Radio, we speak with Judy Wicks about the idea of a peace economy, how the war economy maintains injustice, and how we can start to take action to change it. A local group called Raising Resilience is bringIng an acclaimed author to meet Bainbridge parents and high school teens. In this special 20-minute podcast, we meet that dynamic author, Julie Lythcott-Haims, and Cezanne Allen of Raising Resilience. Julie, as a New York Times bestselling author of “How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success”, will be speaking to parents, educators and interested adults on Wednesday, February 3rd at 7:30pm at the Commons auditorium of Bainbridge High School. She will also address students at BHS the following morning. From her 10 years as Dean of Freshmen at Stanford University, Lythcott-Haims noticed a significant increase in parental involvement in students' lives. Parents were exerting increasing control over their children's academic work, extracurricular and career choices, and daily life decision making. She noticed “increasing numbers of students who, as a result of hyperattentive parenting, lacked a strong sense of self and were poorly equipped to handle the demands of adult life.” Such over-involved parenting, affectionately known as “helicopter parents” (for their hovering prowess), has been an evolving phenomena since the Baby Boom generation began raising children. The effect has been kids who feel under pressure to succeed in terms they have not yet defined, but who do not learn life skills to succeed in the most basic ways because their parents have taken care of every little thing. Lythcott-Haims' book offers an alternative to over-parenting, over-helping, over-scheduling. Clearly, her message has resonated strongly across the country since she is frequently asked to speak in communities everywhere, is being interviewed on the Today Show on January 25th, and has done a number of TEDx talks. Raising Resilience and the PTSO are co-sponsoring bringing Julie Lythcott-Haims to Bainbridge Island to speak about the important and valuable lessons we need to hear to help our kids thrive and grow on their own into adept, successful adults. Register at the Raising Resilience website for what promises to be an inspiring talk. Copies of the book will be available for sale and signing that evening.
