Accountable Leadership is not for Everyone As the leader, you are responsible for everything! You are accountable for the decisions that you make, or don't make. You will be held accountable for the decisions your team makes, or doesn't make. Even more, you will be held accountable for the failures, while giving your team the credit for the wins. You are accountable for your hires. If they work out, great! If they don't...you are on the hook for them. You will be responsible for innovation and creativity as a leader. If the business is not innovative or creative...it's on You! This doesn't sound like it is much fun to be a leader. Well, the fact is, all that accountability can be very rewarding as you remain curious and build into the lives of your people. In this episode of A New Direction, we are joined by former CEO of Tipperary Sales Inc., current Executive Coach and Best-selling author Martha Brown. As she gives practical guidance to leaders at any stage, from her latest book, "It's On You!" Martha Brown's book, "It's On You! Empowerment for Leaders Seeking the Highest Level of Personal Satisfaction and Corporate Success" is a fantastic read from a former CEO who knows how to grow her business and increase profitability. It's on you! It is a self-described guide for emerging and aspiring CEO's and leaders, and the book does not disappoint. I walked away from the book with three in-depth insights from Martha Brown and "It's on You!" A leader needs to be Strong, Accountable, and Compassionate. And when you can combine those things successfully, you will have been a great leader. Martha addresses a number of leadership issues from "owning your team", to "creativity and innovation", to "having the hard conversations" to "making sure you have time for you"...and so much more! It's on You! is not a leadership philosophy book. This book has also built in at the end of every chapter, a moment to reflect on where you are at in your leadership, and then a "Step Into Action" section, where she gives you actionable ideas to improve. Simply a great leadership book. I think it is a must-read. Get your copy here! Please reach out and thank the sponsors of A New Direction! Responsibility is the obligation to do something, while accountability is accepting the consequences of one's actions or decisions related to that responsibility. Responsibility is a duty, while accountability is the obligation to answer for the outcome of fulfilling that duty. Accountability is often seen as a higher level of responsibility, as it involves taking ownership and being answerable for the results of one's actions. I like to think of the two, responsibility and accountability, like a coin. They have two different sides but one cannot be without the other. Listen in for a deeper dive into accountability. After decades of teamwork and the highest levels of accountability as an F-15 and F-22 fighter pilot, Weapons School Instructor and Squadron Commander Robert “Cujo” Teschner concluded that every team can become what he personally experienced and lived on the front-line. Today, Cujo joins us to share about his current mission: helping organizations build teams that win amid disruption.” He'll share stories from his time as a F-15 “Eagle” instructor at the prestigious U.S. Air Force Weapons School (think Tom Cruise in “Top Gun”), but more importantly, he'll share how teams- whether that's the hockey team on the ice, the sales division at work or the family unit at home- can build trust and achieve performance even when plans fall apart. Godly leaders take it on themselves to answer to the same rules as everyone else. Where leaders often lose their credibility—when they act as if the rulebook was written for everyone else & not for themselves. And when I talk about the 'rulebook', what am I really talking about? 2 Timothy 3:16-17 tells us: All Scripture is God-breathed & is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting & training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
