This week we have a follow up on Episode 154 where we covered a March 1983 fatality on Mount Washington where 23 year old Ken Hokenson lost his life and his hiking partner, Ali Kashkooli was rescued. At the time we covered the story we used the details provided in the Summer 1984 Appalachia Journal. The writer of that article and the rescuer who first found Ken and later helped rescue Ali is Doug Teschner. Doug was told about our segment and was kind enough to do a follow up interview with us so definitely stick around for this segment because Doug has a lot of interesting background on that event and we really get into what the White Mountains were like back then. Later in the show our friends Scott and Addie sit down to talk about the Loon Echo Land Trust which is a non-profit organization that conserves, protects, and maintains many of the trails and land in the Lakes Region of Maine. Scott and Addie are overseeing a trail race series that helps support the trust so we will talk about those races, learn about some of the Loon Echo hiking areas and talk about trail running in the Whites. All this plus Falling Waters reroute, powered hiking pants, and recent hikes on Quincy Bogs, and Middle Mountain.
What a privilege it is to have the top graduate of the Air Force Top Gun School and retired U.S. Air Force F-22 and F-15 fighter pilot and squadron commander, Rob “Cujo” Teschner in the studio with Marcus for this week's Team Never Quit Podcast. Listen in for an inspiring conversation with Cujo, whose life is an amazing success story, and whose life mission is to teach and inspire others, bridging the gap between the principles of high performance combat veterans and high performance business. His fight with Colorectal Cancer is what prompted Cujo to retire from the Air Force early. Yet his ambition led to his path of entrepreneurship, leadership and team development. Cujo is the founder and CEO of VMax Group, an international leadership training company and he has authored several books, two of which went to #1 on the Amazon bestseller list. In this episode you will hear: • I loved being part of the Air Force family. We lived all over the place. (7:57) • 1977 when Luke Skywalker wants to join some academy and then join the rebellion. That resonated with me. (9:49) • As a kid, I felt like the military was my family. It's what I knew. (10:50) • I thought it was always cool to hop on an airplane to go someplace new. To meet new people along the way. (13:00) • My letter – the one that says “thanks for applying” never said “try again”. (18:26) • The more people told me it wasn't gonna happen the more committed I was to proving them wrong. (20:47) • I had never flown an airplane before I went to the Air Force Academy. (23:32) • Isn't that stunning how fast we accelerate leadership – how fast we accelerate somebody to realize their potential? (27:07) • If there was a time period I could freeze it would be First Lieutenant to Captain, because that's when I was out there doing the mission. (28:28) • What we need is a constant stream of warriors who are ready to go forth and do. (35:18) • The biggest honor of my military career was being called to be an instructor at our Fighter Weapons School, basically it's the Air Force Top Gun Program. (36:49) • You can beat people up and tell them how much they suck and they can learn from that, but another alternative might be Hey Cujo, we were 2 decisions from victory today. (43:55) • I try to apply that to my kids. (44:46) • One of the huge blessings of my life was being a part of teams that mattered. (48:09) • Our family team got a whole heck of a lot better as a result of my failure with cancer. That caused us to focus where we needed to. I'm eternally grateful for it. (52:32) • One of the best 4-star bosses I ever worked for would come in every month and ask us “Hey what are you doing for the home team?” (55:33)

Debriefing can have a powerful impact on business when done correctly. In this powerful conversation Robert "Cujo" Teschner breaks down the idea behind a debrief and to execute them to achieve significant results. His definition of a debrief is simple and elegant - Debrief is the constructive evaluation of the quality of our decisions and associated actions measured against the objectives we set out to achieve. The key words of that definition are what Cujo unpacks in detail. He starts by differentiating between a debrief and feedback. Current business culture puts a heavy emphasis on feedback and while that has its benefits it often is met with a negative connotation. A debrief has an entirely different objective and when the culture is created to execute them efficiently, consistently and with a high level of vulnerability magical things begin happening. Cujo gets tactical into how you can begin executing debriefs that make a true impact. He covers the importance of perspective and ensuring that every seat at the table has an opportunity to be heard. He breaks down the importance of debriefing wins and not solely focusing on areas of improvement. This is a monumental shift in thinking as most organizations never take the time to research why and initiative, process, sale was such a big win and spend too much time discussing what went wrong. This conversation you want to have a notepad ready as the wisdom Cujo shared will move the needle. By the way Cujo is a former fighter pilot and his stories are absolutely incredible! We thank him for his service and how he continues to make those around him better everyday. The Executive Director & Chief of Staff for the Toronto Police Services Board, Ryan Teschner, shares with us the role of the Police Board and and its objectives. Whether, to set the priorities, hire the Chief and the Command Officers or set the budget and the plans, it's role encompasses more than that with the objective of offering adequate and effective policing to get the best results for the public. "The police is doing what is encumbered on all of us as a society to do, and that is to create safe communities. The role of the board, on the other hand, is to build, enhance and repair trust between the public and the police so they can see each other in one another. "- Ryan Teschner

In the corporate world, the idea of ‘accountability' is seen as a core function of management. However, if we think about it, in many ways we've had accountability upside down. Here's what I mean; we pay more attention to knowing who to blame in case we fail than to creating the conditions to succeed. What that means is that oftentimes, accountability is seen as a threat rather than a debrief strategy for success. So, what might happen if we turned that around? Is it possible that we've got accountability upside down? If so, how can we get it so that our people want to embrace accountability? Our guest today is Mr. Rob “Cujo” Teschner. Braver Angels - Politics is tough. It always has been. American politics is competitive, thrilling, frustrating – and infuriating. The stakes are high. Issues are important. Outcomes matter. This is why we care, and should care, about our politics. But do our politics have to be demonizing? Does it have to bring out the worst in us? Do our politics have to destroy the goodwill of our society? Braver Angels is a relatively young organization that answers these questions with a resounding no and is seeking to assure the same.

I have two important and enjoyable conversations to share with you this week. Both are about finding greater unity and harmony in our political conversations, even when we hold very different views. Tim Payton and Douglass Teschner are both to the right of me on the political spectrum, but we share a lot of similar values, and a deep concern about the corrosive division in our country. I really appreciate the perspective that each of my guests brings. The biggest overarching theme in this episode is listening to understand.

During his Air Force career, Cujo flew combat missions over Iraq, homeland defense missions in the United States, and deployed with his F-22 squadron across the Pacific. Cujo now teaches leaders how to embrace the tenets of high-performance teamwork in their businesses to achieve better performance, drive engagement and accomplish their missions. He has simplified and adapted the tactics, techniques and procedures high performance teams use to help any organization win bigger and build teams that work. Cujo is the author of the national bestselling book Debrief to Win and is an increasingly in-demand keynote speaker.
