After nearly 200,000 cold calls and a million auto-dialer calls, Stephen Oommen discovered something shocking: 98% of his revenue came from warm referrals. Today, he breaks down how sellers can turn relationships into predictable growth. In this episode, host Lyndsay Dowd sits down with Stephen Oommen, a 25-year go-to-market veteran, speaker, and author of the upcoming book The Referral Effect. Stephen shares why nearly 98% of his business revenue came from warm referrals, despite making hundreds of thousands of cold calls throughout his career. Stephen opens up about growing up as the child of immigrants in Oklahoma, navigating an identity crisis that ultimately became his superpower—the Chameleon Effect—his ability to adapt, connect, and create trust across any environment. That skill later became the foundation for his referral-based sales methodology. You'll learn: - Why executives don't respond to cold outreach—and what they do respond to - How to close the trust gap by scaling warm referrals - The "Magic Networking Question" that instantly upgrades your network - The 99 and 1 Principle for managing energy in sales and relationships - How leaders can balance intensity, kindness, and long-term legacy If you're a B2B seller, founder, GTM leader, or executive tired of low-yield outreach, this conversation will challenge how you think about networking, sales culture, and growth. Timestamps 00:00 – Introduction: Stephen Oommen, the Truth Teller. 02:22 – Stephen's Origin Story: From Bankruptcy to Corporate Success. 04:48 – The Chameleon Effect: Turning Identity Crisis into a Superpower. 10:39 – Cold Calls vs. Warm Referrals: The Efficiency vs. Effectiveness Debate. 16:54 – How to Start Networking: Nurturing and Activating Relationships. 19:16 – The Live Exercise: Asking the Right Questions to Build a Network. 22:50 – Using Qualifiers: Geography, Industry, and Title. 26:08 – The 99 and 1 Principle: Managing Energy in Sales. 30:04 – What Inspires Stephen: Growth, Contribution, and Laughter. 32:38 – Legacy: Kindness Character vs. Intense Personality. 35:00 – What's Next: Speaking Tours and The Referral Effect. About the Guest Stephen Oommen is a 25-year go-to-market veteran with experience spanning frontline sales to executive leadership. He has worked with startups and global enterprises including Microsoft, ADP, and Citibank. Stephen is the only speaker and trainer dedicated to helping B2B sellers solve the biggest challenge in modern sales: lack of access to decision makers. His work focuses on closing the trust gap by scaling the most successful method known—warm referrals. A successful entrepreneur and W2 employee ("entreployee"), Stephen has retired from corporate twice, paid off hundreds of thousands in non-mortgage debt, and is currently writing his book The Referral Effect. Guest Bio Sam Ushio is the founder and Chief Ikigai Officer of Ikigai Lab, a social enterprise that blends ancient Japanese wisdom with modern science to help people and organizations align purpose with measurable impact. Drawing on two decades in corporate leadership and consulting, Sam's work focuses on human sustainability, values-based growth, and bringing humanity back into business. A former financial services executive, Sam experienced a pivotal moment that transformed his understanding of success—from financial growth to personal and purposeful growth. His family's story, rooted in Japan over a century ago, deeply shaped his worldview and introduced him to the authentic essence of Ikigai—the Japanese concept of a "reason for being." Through Ikigai Lab, Sam works with global brands and leaders to create cultures where people thrive through alignment of strengths, values, and daily actions. His frameworks integrate positive psychology, emotional intelligence, and ancient wisdom, inspiring people to live with awareness, gratitude, and intention every day. Sam is also the creator of the Ikigai Summit (soon to be rebranded as Repurpose), an annual event that explores how purpose-driven leadership can reshape organizations and communities for a more meaningful future. At his core, Sam believes purpose isn't a destination—it's a daily practice. His mission is to help others discover and live their Ikigai through the simple yet profound act of aligning who they are with how they live and lead. Summary In this conversation, Shannon Huffman Polson and Sam Ushio explore the concept of Ikigai, its origins, and its significance in personal and professional life. They discuss the importance of family legacy, personal growth, and the misunderstandings surrounding Ikigai, particularly the common four-circle Venn diagram. Sam shares his journey of discovering Ikigai through his family's history and emphasizes the need for gratitude, intentionality, and the integration of personal values in daily life. The discussion also touches on the impact of Ikigai on organizations and the importance of spirituality and rituals in Japanese culture. Takeaways Ikigai is a Japanese concept meaning 'reason for being'. Personal stories shape our understanding of purpose. Financial growth should not compromise personal growth. Gratitude and awareness are essential for a fulfilling life. Ikigai is about aligning daily actions with personal values. The four-circle Venn diagram is a common misunderstanding of Ikigai. Daily life (sekatsu) is central to understanding Ikigai. Mindset and emotional intelligence are crucial for personal development. Reflecting on influential people can help clarify one's values. Ikigai can enhance both personal and professional fulfillment. Chapters 00:00 – What Is Ikigai, Really? Sam Ushio introduces the real meaning of Ikigai—not just an abstract idea of life's purpose, but the alignment of daily actions with personal values and priorities. 01:05 – Purpose as the Foundation of Grit and Resilience Host Shannon Huffman Polson shares how purpose became central to her research on grit and leadership, setting the stage for the conversation. 02:57 – Sam Ushio's Journey from Corporate Success to Purpose Alignment Sam reflects on his background in financial services, the "lightning bolt moment" that shifted his path, and his discovery of a deeper calling through Ikigai. 03:48 – The Power of Family Heritage and Migration Sam shares his great-grandparents' story—leaving Japan to support a 1,200-year-old shrine—and how that legacy shaped his modern understanding of purpose and sacrifice. 08:19 – Realizing the Limits of Financial Growth Sam explains how a career focused solely on financial metrics led to personal disconnection—and how redefining growth became the start of his transformation. 11:03 – The Value of Failure and Creative Experimentation Sam describes his early entrepreneurial struggles and creative experiments that didn't work, emphasizing how failure built clarity and resilience. 13:30 – Discovering the Family Photo That Changed Everything A 100-year-old family photo surfaces at just the right moment, sparking deep reflection and connecting Sam's modern journey to ancestral purpose. 14:52 – Rediscovering Ikigai Through Family Wisdom Sam's Aunt Julie plays a key role in reconnecting him with the true Japanese essence of Ikigai—as a philosophy of balance, awareness, and daily living. 16:33 – Debunking the 4-Circle Ikigai Myth Sam and Shannon unpack the viral "Venn diagram" of Ikigai, exploring how Western interpretations often miss its true meaning rooted in sekatsu—daily life. 20:12 – Ikigai as Daily Alignment, Not a Destination Sam reframes Ikigai as the daily practice of aligning values with actions—living your reason for being moment by moment, not chasing a final goal. 24:21 – Frameworks for Living with Purpose Exploring the fusion of Japanese wisdom and positive psychology, Sam discusses using values and strengths (via CliftonStrengths) to guide intentional living. 26:10 – From Purpose to Measurable Impact Sam connects Ikigai to measurable outcomes in leadership and business, linking emotional awareness, cognition, and behavior to results. 32:10 – How to Begin Your Ikigai Journey Sam offers a practical starting point: reflect on a person who has shaped you, explore the values behind their influence, and connect that to your own life purpose. 34:05 – Practicing Ikigai in Daily Life (Sekatsu) Sam introduces the "Minimum Viable Purpose" concept—testing small daily actions outside your comfort zone to grow purposefully, not perfectly. 38:05 – Purpose in the Age of AI A discussion on how AI is shaping human purpose and connection, and how grounding in values helps navigate rapid technological change. 40:15 – Inside Ikigai Lab: Bridging Humanity and Business Sam explains how Ikigai Lab helps organizations and teams connect individual purpose to measurable impact through human sustainability frameworks. 43:04 – Building Awareness and Intention Across Generations Sam discusses bringing the Ikigai philosophy to workplaces, universities, and communities to help people live and lead with intention. 49:23 – Returning to Japan: A Full-Circle Journey Sam shares the emotional story of returning to his family's ancestral shrine in Japan, honoring generations of purpose, resilience, and continuity. 53:29 – The Sacred in the Everyday Shannon reflects on her trip to Japan, the power of ritual, and what it means to recognize the sacred in daily life—connecting to the heart of Ikigai. 56:11 – Purpose as a Verb, Not a Goal Sam and Shannon conclude that Ikigai isn't something you find once—it's something you live daily, through curiosity, courage, and continual growth. Have you ever sacrificed your wellbeing for a career that looked great on paper? In this powerful and honest episode of It's a Mindset, I'm joined by Lisa Merryweather, a former Mergers & Acquisitions lawyer with over 25 years of experience navigating high-stakes deals and intense corporate pressure. These days, Lisa is rewriting her own definition of success. She's a coach, mentor, and creative thinker exploring a whole new way of working, one that puts the human (not just the hustle) first. We talk about what happens when your body starts whispering (and then screaming) that something's not right. Lisa shares the realities of life at the top—burnout, perfectionism, pushing through—and the courageous choice to stop, step back, and reimagine what fulfilment really means. As someone who also spent years in the corporate world (hello, JPMorgan!), I found Lisa's insights refreshingly raw, thoughtful, and important. Key Episode Takeaways: The pressure of high-performance roles—and the unrealistic expectations that come with them The importance of self-compassion and giving yourself grace in times of transition Why perfectionism can quietly sabotage your growth The privilege and responsibility of being able to redefine wealth and success once you have financial stability Show Resources: Connect with Lisa on LinkedIn - HERE Follow Emma, the podcast host on Instagram - HERE Check Out Emma's Book, Worthy & Wealthy - HERE Download Chapter 1 of Worthy & Wealthy for FREE - HERE About the Guest: Lisa Merryweather is a former Mergers & Acquisitions lawyer with over 25 years of experience — which means she has spent a fair share of her life drafting complex agreements, managing high-stakes negotiations, and becoming way too familiar with corporate regulations. These days her life looks a little different. Lisa now work across a portfolio of roles — coaching and mentoring high-achieving professionals, writing (slightly-too- long-but-hopefully-entertaining LinkedIn posts, under the guise of preparing to write a book) and building the next chapter of her career. There's something new brewing — an idea Lisa has been developing to support founders through one of the more intense transitions in their business (and personal) lives. It's still in development, but let's just say it's founder-first, perspective-heavy, and created for the kind of people who want to do things differently. So yes — coaching and mentoring are part of what Lisa does. But so is building something never seen or done quite this way before. Curious? So am I. Let's all stay tuned. In this episode of Clocking Out, we meet Sarah Dale — a woman who spent years excelling in the world of media and advertising, helping brands like The Wall Street Journal and Fortune grow and thrive. Raised in a driven, adventurous family in New Jersey, Sarah learned early on that anything was possible — a mindset that carried her through multiple career pivots. After building early career success and pursuing a new job opportunity, Sarah decided to take a much-needed break and traveled to Montana. There, she quickly fell in love with its adventurous spirit and wide-open way of life — so much so that she made the life-changing decision to leave everything behind and move there. During her years in Montana, she planted the first seeds of her dream: creating empowering outdoor experiences for women. After personal upheaval eventually pulled her back into the corporate world, it was her strong network — and the relationships she had carefully nurtured — that helped her rebuild her career. Yet even after a decade of professional success, Sarah realized that true fulfillment wasn't found at the top of the ladder. Inspired by the love for her children, she knew it was finally time to launch Project 1490, the mission that had lived in her heart for years.Today, through Project 1490, Sarah helps professional women rediscover their confidence and strength by learning outdoor skills like fly fishing, archery, and horseback riding — while building deep, authentic connections that fuel both their personal and professional lives. If you've ever dreamed of stepping off the traditional path and into something more authentic, Sarah's story will inspire you to trust your gut, build your tribe, take the leap, and create a life you truly love.Connect with Sarah at:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/project-1490Instagram: @project_1490Website: www.project1490.comFollow Raymond: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/raymondmlee/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/raymondlee.coTiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@clockingoutpodX: http://twitter.com/hrentrepreneurYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@clockingoutwithraymondlee/videosBecome a guest on Clocking Out: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeSTQmww_Gvld1zfLzTmS16PDfZvltFna7Gh6iSYehL-maU

2B Bolder Podcast : Career Insights for the Next Generation of Women in Business & Tech
Stepping away from the corporate world into entrepreneurship isn't just about changing careers—it's about transforming your identity, mindset, and relationship with work. In this candid conversation with Deb Boulanger, CEO of Life After Corporate, we explore the often challenging but deeply rewarding journey that high-achieving women navigate when launching their own businesses.Deb shares her personal transition story, from teaching to corporate leadership to founding her own company, revealing that the entrepreneurial path proved more difficult than anticipated. She explains how the identity shift from having preset calendars and clear expectations to designing your own business requires mastering not just strategy, but your internal dialogue. We dig into the psychological barriers that hold women back—particularly around pricing and self-worth—uncovering the startling reality that women entrepreneurs earn just 30 cents to the dollar compared to their male counterparts.Financial considerations take center stage as Deb recommends having at least a year's cushion before making the leap, while noting that expenses typically decrease after leaving corporate life. For women caught between staying in corporate or launching a business, she emphasizes the importance of making a clear decision rather than vacillating, as "the universe can't deliver on a split desire."The conversation moves beyond the misleading image of entrepreneurship portrayed on social media to address practical matters like work-life "blend," the critical importance of networking, and how to approach business development. Deb's advice culminates in encouraging women to trust their intuition—what she calls "the niggle"—and to price based on the transformation they deliver rather than trying to be merely affordable.Whether you're contemplating leaving corporate, have recently been laid off, or are already building your business, this episode offers honest insights to help you navigate your journey with greater confidence and clarity. Accountable Leadership is not for Everyone As the leader, you are responsible for everything! You are accountable for the decisions that you make, or don't make. You will be held accountable for the decisions your team makes, or doesn't make. Even more, you will be held accountable for the failures, while giving your team the credit for the wins. You are accountable for your hires. If they work out, great! If they don't...you are on the hook for them. You will be responsible for innovation and creativity as a leader. If the business is not innovative or creative...it's on You! This doesn't sound like it is much fun to be a leader. Well, the fact is, all that accountability can be very rewarding as you remain curious and build into the lives of your people. In this episode of A New Direction, we are joined by former CEO of Tipperary Sales Inc., current Executive Coach and Best-selling author Martha Brown. As she gives practical guidance to leaders at any stage, from her latest book, "It's On You!" Martha Brown's book, "It's On You! Empowerment for Leaders Seeking the Highest Level of Personal Satisfaction and Corporate Success" is a fantastic read from a former CEO who knows how to grow her business and increase profitability. It's on you! It is a self-described guide for emerging and aspiring CEO's and leaders, and the book does not disappoint. I walked away from the book with three in-depth insights from Martha Brown and "It's on You!" A leader needs to be Strong, Accountable, and Compassionate. And when you can combine those things successfully, you will have been a great leader. Martha addresses a number of leadership issues from "owning your team", to "creativity and innovation", to "having the hard conversations" to "making sure you have time for you"...and so much more! It's on You! is not a leadership philosophy book. This book has also built in at the end of every chapter, a moment to reflect on where you are at in your leadership, and then a "Step Into Action" section, where she gives you actionable ideas to improve.
