Joy is...Learning.Adam Merry is an elite athlete for Saucony, based in Colorado. He started training competitively in 2017 and has since raced in distances up to 100km on the road and trails. As well as being an incredible athlete in his own right, he also uses his expertise to coach others and his background in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to bring light to the issues in the trail and ultra running world.I chatted to Adam upon his return from representing Team USA at the 80km World Mountain Running Championships and we shared an incredibly rich, broad-reaching conversation, as well as having a lot of fun! In addition to running geekery, we covered: pink shoes, babies and skinny pigs; the parallels between running and chess; finding our edge; the importance of community; why finish lines are arbitrary; movement as a means of connection and the thrill of representing your country; being a voice for representation; thoughts around tokenism; the role of mindful education in healing our communities; getting comfortable with being uncomfortable; celebrating the journey, and striving for 'experience' rather than curating 'identity'.Adam is an incredibly kind and warm person, with a wisdom that far exceeds his years, and his words are important ones that we would all benefit from truly listening to and acting upon. I was particularly grateful for his guidance regarding how we can all show up, whether at school or on the trails, as better allies and, indeed, better humans, in our day-to-day lives. Over the past few years, since taking his training to the next level due to working with the well-respected coach – David Roche – Adam has podiumed, and won, some impressive US based trail races. He thrives through hard work, dedication, finding joy in the process and having fun while being super consistent with his training cycles. Adam - a mixed race man – was encouraged to go for a trail run six years ago. As often happens while out there on the trails, this 4-mile run turned into 8 miles and just a few months later he signed up for his first 50K. Yes, trail running is that addictive! Coach's corner is back and we feature two stud coaches and athletes: Dr. Stefanie Flippin and Adam Merry. Stefanie is a professional runner for HOKA, specializing in ultrarunning. Stefanie was the 2021 USATF 100 Mile National Champion. Her 100 mile PR of 14:04, set at Tunnel Hill in 2021, is 5th all-time for an American woman. She is the 2020 and 2021 Tunnel Hill 100 female champion, and has raced dozens of ultras from 50k to 100 mile distances. She has come a long way since her first marathon in 4:16. She is a coach for Lift, Run, Perform and co-owner of a foot and ankle medical practice in Colorado. Adam Merry has quickly become one of the strongest ultra and trail runners in the country over the last few years. Just last week he finished 7th at the Way Too Cool 50k that featured a stacked field. Adam takes a time-centered approach to training with a strong emphasis on speed, boundless positivity and food, and planning for the long-term. Will this song heal everyone of what 2020 has done?  Possibly.  In the shortest episode we have ever uploaded, Travis and Adam look to spread Christmas cheer by singing "Merry Christmas, Darling" originally sung by the Carpenters.  At some points, your ears will believe that these angelic voices that harmonize so clear together, were made just for you to feel peace during this holiday season.  Give it a listen.  (Sidenote: I wanted all hosts to do a song, but nobody else would)
