James's childhood was defined by his abusive father and a suicide attempt, resulting in him devoting 6 years to repairing their relationship. One day after speaking at an event for youth ministers, he was encouraged by one of them to share some lessons learned from someone who has dealt with these tough times before. Disillusioned with the world, he found a way to help himself by helping others. He sought out service as a means of breaking neural pathways and shifting perspective- and did so in an unconventional manner. James is a TEDx speaker, relationship-building expert, and author who gave away everything he owned and set out on a journey to serve someone in all 50 states. After James asked those he served to Pay-It-Forward, an incredible domino effect of kindness followed. James encourages people to live a life of giving, which leads to true happiness and better relationships. When you take the phrase “live our lives with open arms” to heart, it will change your destiny forever. You can't miss this conversation. Please help me welcome James Beck to the We Do Hard Things Podcast. Hey there, I'm Mark Drager. You may not know me (yet) but:
“I was born and raised in Clarksdale, Mississippi. 10/22/45. I came to Louisville in search of a teaching job when I graduated from Alcorn State University. I never was a great sports hero, but I was like every other kid… I was on the baseball team and I thought I was gonna be the next Jackie Robinson. And growing up in Mississippi without running water, without electricity, and all the other comforts of life, I want everybody to know that we loved our life at home with our parents. We loved life every day.” – James Sims. Today's guest is James Sims, a guy I love talking to so much when I see him in the gym that I just had to get him in the studio. I was initially interested in speaking with him because he told me he was the first black teacher in Oldham County, and as much as I've watched Oldham County change since I was born (1992), I was very curious to get his perspective on watching it evolve over the last 50 years. He didn't agree right away. It took a few conversations in our gym to get him to warm up to it, but I stayed at him because of his natural storytelling ability and because I knew he was sitting on a treasure trove of experience and real talk. And after many follow-up discussions, I proudly present to you the finished product. James begins (10:24) recounting his childhood and growing up in Mississippi without running water or electricity, and during a time where you couldn't confront a white person if you were black. He shares how he learned to navigate those waters, his relation to the man who led the first slave revolt, being arrested for participating in a sit-in and why spending two those two weeks in jail was one of the greatest things that's ever happened to him (25:42). 19:45). After James served in Army and then used the GI Bill to finish his college education, he shares the story of leaving Mississippi to become the first black teacher in Oldham County (42:48). After doing that for a bit, James recounts going to work on the railroads (59:59), paying his dues for 6 months with a pick axe and eventually graduating from the engineer's program and driving trains for 14 years, then later going back to teaching classes and eventually meeting his wife, Dianne. Later (1:27:09), he shares his one of his favorite stories from childhood about getting caught behind the school shooting dice with the Beasley boys. The interview wraps up (1:25:50) with the one big thing that he wishes he could share with everyone, and it's some real talk. James was an awesome guest, I think you guys can hear how much fun I'm having with him, I hope you enjoy listening to him as much as I did.
We start off the week with pure thievery – Toby goes to Central London and gets his phone pinched, which meant that he missed Saturday’s march. Not that it really mattered since James had such a good time he doesn’t remember too much of it himself. Then it’s off to the news of the week dominated, of course, by the resignation of Matt Hancock as Secretary of State for Health and Social Care. Hancock was caught snogging an aide inside the Ministry, was forgiven by the PM and then quit anyway. Was the whole thing a pantomime or a car crash? In Culture Corner we take a look at Loki (from Disney+), Clarkson’s Farm starring Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear/Grand Tour fame (Amazon Prime) and an unbelievably bad RomCom called Good on Paper (Netflix). After James leaves for Pilates, Toby has a brief monologue on the Euros. Opening sound this week is Matt Hancock’s resignation announcement.
After James and Evan have spent hours debating and analyzing George RR Martin's fantasy history, James has brought on the hosts of a real history podcast. Graham Duke and Ali Hood of the phenomenal podcast Rex Factor come to discuss Robert Baratheon. We talk about the real-life inspiration behind Robert in Edward IV and Henry IV. Acts 12:1-17 (NIV) Read by: Adriana Abuchar Have you ever seen the LORD make a way out of no way in your life? On today's episode of Daily Read we hear about the miraculous rescue of Peter from prison. Today's passage begins to wrap up the story of what's going on with the twelve disciples. From this point on the story revolves around specific leaders and then begins to follow the missionary journeys of Paul. But today's passage begins with the report that James, the brother of John has been killed by King Herod. Herod was the puppet king that was sold out to the Roman empire. So yeah, a growing group of Jews splintering off going around saying that Jesus is King presents a bit of a problem for Herod. He meets this challenge with violence. After James is killed, Herod had Peter arrested. Peter then gets set free by the angel of the LORD and returns to the disciples in Jerusalem. But this presents a problem for the observant listener. Why does the LORD save Peter and not James? For any of us who have seen God make a way out of no way, and for all of those who still need a way where there is no way, this passage comes as a challenge. As you listen to the passage, hold this tension before the LORD. ----------REFLECT---------- 1. What moment in this passage stood out to you? 2. Luke tells us that the Church was praying earnestly for Peter. No one in the passage could imagine a way for things to change, and could hardly grasp what was happening when they did. But they prayed… earnestly. Who needs your earnest prayer? Who needs to be delivered by the LORD? 3. James and Peter have a different fate. Does this mean that God failed James? Does this mean that God favored Peter? How do these tensions tend to land in your heart? Sit with the Lord in that tension today and ask the Holy Spirit to speak. ----------GO DEEPER---------- Bible Project: Acts 1-12 Overview >> InterVarsity Press Selections: Acts >> ----------CONNECT---------- Find an InterVarsity Chapter >> Start an InterVarsity Chapter >> Learn More >> --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/dailyread/message
After James Charles YouTube career would crash and burn with him breaking a world record for Sub Loss and the internet would spawn MEME after MEME and people would get to work digging up old claims that support Tati's expose. After James would be accused of pressuring straight guys and amid the controversy, YouTubers like Gabriel Zamora, Jeffree Star, Shane Dawson, Jake Paul, Nikita Dragun, and others would chime in.
After James and John’s Mother asks for them to sit at the Right and Left… Jesus says… “You do not know what you are asking.[j] Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?” They said to him, “We can.” 23 He replied, “My cup you will indeed drink,” Jesus points BACK to the CROSS! Because Jesus knows that PRIDE and AMBITION are DESTROYED by the Cross The Cross will humble you - and we need humility to be Saints! Everyone has a cross... Jesus said “If anyone will follow me, let him deny himself, take up HIS Cross, and follow me.” My Cross is not the same as yours, and yours is not the same as mine. It will be in carrying your cross that pride is stripped away! Ask God to send you a cross, and you will receive it! Litany of Humility That others may be loved more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it. That others may be esteemed more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it. That, in the opinion of the world, others may increase and I may decrease, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it. That others may be chosen and I set aside, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it. That others may be praised and I go unnoticed, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it. That others may be preferred to me in everything, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it. That others may become holier than I, provided that I may become as holy as I should, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

[Comment: The James' Way] Friends of the Rosary, Today is the festivity of Saint James, the brother of John the Evangelist, and the first Apostle to be martyred. James was one of the three Apostles who were particularly close to Jesus. He was with his brother and Peter at the Transfiguration and in the Garden of Gethsemane. After the Crucifixion, Resurrection, and Ascension of Jesus, he traveled to preach to Spain, Roman Hispania at that time. While he was praying upon the banks of the Ebro River in Caesaraugusta, Saragossa, he experienced the first apparition of the Virgin Mary, in a mystical phenomenon known as bilocation. It was the first Marian supernatural apparition; it occurred in the year 40th while Mary was still alive on earth (she was living in Jerusalem). The Blessed Mother would become Our Lady of the Pillar, Nuestra Señora del Pilar, in Spanish. James would be the patron saint of Spain and the pilgrims. After James was beheaded in Jerusalem by the order of Herod Agrippa, his remains were transported to the end of the earth, the Finisterre, in northwestern Spain, in Galicia. There, he is venerated at Santiago de Compostela, a medieval pilgrimage site, the James' Way, el Camino de Santiago, still very popular today. Hello and welcome to season 2 episode 79 of The Berean Manifesto, brought to you by The Ekklesian House. This is Pastor Bill and over the next 13 minutes, or so, we are going to be talking about the Gospels and their authors. Before we get started, I want to give a big shout out to a resource I leaned on heavily putting this episode together, TheBibleJourney.org If you're looking to get more into the Bible beyond the text on the page, I highly recommend you head over to TheBibleJourney.org It's a great resource to look into the history of the Bible times and what was going on in the lives of the authors and the characters involved in the story. When we read the Bible, hopefully, we approach the text with a certain level of reverence. However, when reading the New Testament we have these almost 4th wall breaking moments where one or another of its eight or nine authors say things that remind us of the fact that most of the New Testament wasn't written with the intention of writing these great, long-lasting, and/or holy works, but as simple letters to other believers or churches. Like where Peter refers to Paul's teachings as “hard to grasp.” Or in 2 Timothy 4:13 CSB where Paul writes, “[13] When you come, bring the cloak I left in Troas with Carpus, as well as the scrolls, especially the parchments.” To break this down a little further, the only New Testament texts that were, as far as we can tell, intentionally written as Holy texts for the New Testament where Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, and Revelations were. They weren't written in that order though. Mark was the first of the Gospel accounts to be penned, but it was the eighth (or ninth, depending on who you ask) New Testament text to be written. Four or five more texts of the New Testament were written before Luke's Gospel was finished, and then Acts. Another seven of the New Testament texts would be written before Matthew would write his gospel, and finally John would write his Gospel account, his epistles, and Revelations. Although there is some debate on whether John wrote his epistles before or after writing Revelations. So in order of authorship, or as close as we can get that order, that's James (written just a few years after the death and resurrection of Jesus) or some lists put Romans at the top, First and Second Thessalonians, Galatians, First and Second Corinthians, then for most lists Romans, Mark, Philippians, Colossians, Philemon, Ephesians, Luke, Acts, First Timothy, Titus, Second Timothy, Hebrews, First and Second Peter, Jude, Matthew, John, First Second and Third John, and finally Revelations (written almost sixty years after Jesus death and resurrection.) Focusing on the Gospels and their authors. First off, I find the order of placement of the Gospels in the Bible puzzling, and without doing any research, the only pattern I could deduce was that they are in reverse alphabetical order. After putting in the research I know it's called the Augustine order as it was made popular by Augustine of Hippo in the 5th century. And, despite their reverse alphabetical order, Augustine and other less popular church leaders believed that Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John actually was the chronological order the books were written in. As time went by, more evidence came to light allowing us to narrow down when these books were written and proving this arrangement to be erroneous. That is, erroneous if the goal is chronological order of when they were written. The Gospel of Mark was written anonymously and only later attributed to John Mark who was a ministry companion of Peter and spent considerable time with Paul and Barnabas. There's no evidence that Mark was present at any of the events he wrote about or that he even met Jesus at all, but there is speculation that the upper room was within Mark's family home, and it's rumored that he was the “certain young man” who ran away naked after Jesus was arrested in the garden. The common belief was that Mark gathered the stories that Peter, Paul, and the other apostles would tell in ministry, at meals, and around the campfire late at night. Peter then dictated certain finer details to Mark finishing up his Gospel. A curious detail about the Gospel of Mark is that the oldest manuscripts we've found of this Gospel end with chapter 16 verse 8, with only newer manuscripts containing verses 9 through 20 either being added, or perhaps restored, later. The second of the Gospels written, Luke, is the only book of the Bible to be written by a non-Hebrew. Or rather, the only book of the New Testament written by a non-Hebrew. You can't really call some of the Old Testament writers Hebrews. Luke was a doctor who shared with John Mark in common that he never met Jesus and wasn't present at the events of his text. Luke was led to the Lord by Paul and like Mark, also spent time with Paul in ministry. There are those who believe that John Mark and Luke wrote their Gospel accounts together while living with Paul in Rome during the two years he was under house arrest. The differences in the two Gospels existing due to their intended audiences. This is historically possible, both Mark and Luke are recorded as living with Paul for certain times during those two years. The more mainstream theory is that it was with a copy of Marks Gospel in hand, that Luke began interviewing people throughout Rome and beyond to confirm and expand on Mark's Gospel with a non-Jewish audience, like himself, in mind. It was during this work that Luke also began writing the book of Acts, or The Acts of The Apostles, based off the testimonies given while researching for his Gospel account. The third Gospel to be written, about 10 years after the first two, is the Gospel according to Matthew who is also known as Levi. Matthew was the first of Jesus' disciples to be called by The Lord, and probably the most hated member of Jesus' disciples. Before following Jesus, Matthew was a tax collector by trade, and while that may not mean much to say that today, in Jesus' time that meant he was a legalized thief. It was within his legal rights to take anything or however much he wanted from any non-Roman citizen in the name of “collecting taxes,” and as long as he paid the minimum amount due to his Roman overseers, he was good. Matthew's Gospel is unique in that it is the only Gospel to be penned in Hebrew instead of Greek. Laying the Gospels of Mark and Matthew side by side it becomes clear that Matthew translated Mark's Gospel into Hebrew and then added to it from his own memory and added emphasis and flare for his intended audience. Finally, we get to the Gospel of John. John started his very unique Gospel about fifty years after the death and resurrection of Jesus. John's Gospel is unique in that Mark, Luke, and Matthew all focused on the gnostic side of Jesus. They focused on Jesus' humanity and the power of God to move through the Messiah. These Gospels led to a movement of teaching called Gnosticism that basically claimed that Jesus was nothing before He was born, lived a human life, and was then elevated after death to the level of God. The Gospel of John directly focuses on pointing out that Jesus was God before He humbled Himself to be born as a human, moved in the authority of God after He was filled with the Holy Spirit, died, and was elevated back to the status He had before He was humbled. The common belief of the day being that any man born had the potential to be The Messiah, John intentionally sorts His Gospel not by time like the others, but by the fulfillment of the prophesied miracles that highlight the Divinity of The Messiah instead of the common belief of the day. If you just read the Gnostic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) and then tried to read the rest of the New Testament you would suffer from quite a large cognitive dissidence, you would have this overwhelming sense like you'd missed a really important detail at some point. You be going back and asking, “Did I skip something? Did they leave something out?” it wouldn't make much sense. The Gospel of John is the lynchpin that makes everything the rest of the New Testament says about Jesus make sense. The most interesting part about that, being that the Gospel of John was the 5th to the last book of the New Testament written, and John wrote those last 4 books himself. This is Pastor Bill saying, “Until next time…” P.S. On a personal side note, I like the idea of Jesus' half-brother, James, being the first author of a New Testament text. Interesting details, Peter was the leader of the church after Jesus ascension, it wasn't but a handful of years though before the church replaced him with James, either because Peter was better suited for ministry to Gentiles, or because Peter talked like a Gentile. Either way, James was most likely chosen because of the letter he wrote to the twelve tribes of Israel which became the book of James, or perhaps his appointment led to the writing of his letter and they chose him due to his being Jesus' half-brother. After James, John led the church. John the disciple whom Jesus loved that went on to write the Gospel of John, the books of First Second and Third John, and Revelations, but when John was arrested Clement seems to assume leadership of the Apostolic Church from Rome. The Apostolic church goes on under what appears to be Paul's leadership apart from the man they recognize as Bishop Clement who history begins calling Pope Clement I. And therein we have the first church split birthing the Orthodox Catholic church. Five hundred years later that church splits creating the Roman Catholic church, and despite historical evidence, both churches claim to this day to be the original unbroken church that Jesus gave to Peter despite neither actually being The Church, because The Church is people, not religious institutions, but I digress.

Hello Captains and welcome to Priority One's 123rd episode, recorded on Thursday, April 11th, 2013 and published on Monday, April 15th, 2013 at PriorityOnePodcast.com!!! After James' bad Star Wars pun last episode, we've banished him to the depths of Hoth and this week the bridge is manned by Tony and Elijah. We wish James all the best, and suggest that the inside of a Tauntaun might be the best place on those cold, cold nights. We have a lot to cover in this week's show! In Trek It Out we have another prediction come true. In this week's STO News we cover the latest Spotlight on the Foundry, and some changes made on Tribble that are causing Foundry authors to frown, the latest Guest Blog on Skill Planning, Season Seven, Dev Blogs Fourty-three and Fourty-four, Legacy of Romulus Blogs Three and Four and the details of the Crystalline Catastrophe event. Next, we head into field notes to discuss the appalling behaviour of one member of the STO Community and the devastation it caused to Caspian Division fleet, and what you can do to increase your fleets security before finally opening up hailing frequencies to review your incoming messages. Remember, Captains, all the submissions we receive for our show will be entered into this month’s random drawing for 1,000 ZEN -- this includes comments on our website and emailed segment topics! {audio}http://media.behindthecameratalk.com/podcasts/011-063009-Enchantedimageslife-final.mp3{/audio} We are James & Stefani Hays, shown here with our daughters, Reilly, 6, and Teagan, 4. We moved from San Diego (James’ hometown) to Roseville (my hometown) over 5 years ago. James always had a love of photography, but our serious passion for it began when Reilly was a baby…we just couldn’t keep the camera off of her! After James informed me he would be setting up a studio in our basement to photograph Reilly, the former financial planner in me decided it was also going to become a place where we could photograph others. Well, here we are 5 years later and could have never imagined that Enchanted Images would become what it has. We feel incredibly blessed to be working together doing something we both love. Not only that, we get to meet and work with the best people and create portraits that may have more significance than we’ll ever know. www.enchantedimageslife.com www.enchantedseniors.com www.facebook.com/enchantedimages Here is a link to the fashion shoot teaser video: http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=1114115857904 Right Click on link to download MP3 File: James and Stefani Hayes
