Mike Stewart is literally in a big league of his own. The 34 year old entrepreneur has built an impressive fleet of 9 Trucks and 15 trailers, specializing in hauling hazardous materials (HAZMAT) that consist of everything from Fuel to Wine and Orange Juice. And it took him about 3 years. The California native attributes his rapid growth in this niche to a few key things. One, he and his team's attention to performance, Two, prioritizing his driver's and having extremely low turnover. and Three, the fact that Hauling Hazardous materials is not over saturated like some of the other trucking niches. In fact, the demand is so high that Mike implores other to get in now. The opportunities are great endless. Mike started his driving career at 23 following in his fathers footsteps, who also is a tenured driver. He began working for CR England as a company driver, but quickly became a owner operator seeing the high earning potential. Things with CR England , would not last long. Although Mike built up to 2 trucks, he got frustrated with the industry and sold them both. Reset. After some “time off” Mike decided to haul fuel because he knew it was the highest paying local CDL job in his area and he had previous HAZMAT experience. He took on the most difficult fuel hauling position and developed a passion for it. He would even grow to have supervisory role in his company, but his dreams for the company were bigger than their own. “The company did not see their own potential!” Mike wanted bigger! Mike took what he learned and all his HAZMAT experience, purchased a truck and a old tanker trailer and started Reliant Tanker Division. Fast forward Today, Mike has grown the company to not only hauling Fuel, but to specializing in all things HAZMAT with a mix of tankers, reefers, flatbeds and more. He has mange to carve out his own lane and has audacious plans for the future. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/trucknhustle/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/trucknhustle/support

Reconstructing Healthcare: Innovative Solutions For Employers To Lower Their Healthcare Costs

In this episode, Michael introduces Mike Poelman, the founder and president of Apta Health. Although Mike started his career as an accountant and controller, he quickly realized that he was a salesman at heart so he shifted into the TPA world working on self-funded health plans. This is where he realized that things needed to be done differently. Mike saw that lack of transparency and collusion were the biggest problems in the industry, and legacy solutions simply weren’t designed to provide employers what they needed, which is what inspired him to create a number of companies, including Apta Health. Apta Health aggregates middle market employer groups under one umbrella so they can benefit from care coordination and cost containment solutions that are typically only available to Fortune 500 size companies. This member centric approach allows more effective customer service, higher member engagement by a team of experts/advocates to reduce provider gaps, contain costs, and improve the member journey. In fact, 88% of employees engage with a care coordinator even before a claim enters the system, which is unheard of in the industry.  The team at Apta Health has an NPS rating of over 70 for their members, employers, and providers because of their attention to the customer experience first and the TPA second. Apta Health has an exciting future ahead. They’ve recently won the 2020 Health Value Award from the Validation Institute and look forward to continuing their use of analytics and data to empower brokers and employer groups to make easy, cost-effective decisions.  Here’s a glance at what we discuss in this episode:  00:45 - Introducing Mike, the founder and president of Apta Health, who is passionate about providing self-insured solutions.  01:05 - Apta Health is a provider of care coordination and cost-containment solutions to optimize self-funded healthcare programs. 02:30 - He started as an accountant and controller but is a salesman at heart; when he first started in the industry, all he had was a phone book and phone.  04:05 - He didn’t intend to be a part of a TPA but he knew he wanted to change things by looking from an employer standpoint first.  04:40 - He started Novo Benefits, a platform where employers are empowered to get direct contacts and unbundle their programs.  05:30 - They’ve evolved into an aggregator with Apta Health; they are changing the industry and empowering employer groups.  06:50 - The key issues in the healthcare industry: transparency and collusion. 09:00 - What Apta Health does: They aggregate employer groups under one umbrella so they can benefit from large group level pricing, solutions, and engagement.  10:36 - They offer Fortune 500-level engagement to the underserved middle-market.  11:00 - The Quantum care coordination model and how it’s different: more effective disease management, better execution, and functionalities done by one pod. 12:30 - Apta is a conglomerate of solutions; they’re getting 200% better engagement  13:50 - The member journey, reduce provider gaps, drive the member experience, and get results and better engagement.  15:47 - A team of experts/nurses help guide and navigate patients through disease management to get them what they need, not just verify coverage.  17:25 - The pod team helps members find more cost-effective solutions they may not know about and create a trusting relationship with members.  21:15 - Stories of above-and-beyond service from the team that is fighting for the member.  22:35 - Deep analytics helps decide what’s best for groups, they use quality metrics, point solutions drive what needs to happen, and an easy number to reach support.  25:15 - Their PCP-centric model helped them avoid wasteful spending; the real-time intercept helps direct members and helps them avoid unnecessary tests.  28:00 - Mike shares his experience with his

In Edible-Alpha® podcast #76, Tera talks with Mike Costello and Amy Dawson, owners of Lost Creek Farm in Lost Creek, West Virginia. Although Mike officially holds the titles of chef and farmer while Amy is farm manager and baker, the duo does everything in tandem, from restoring the long-vacated family farmstead to sharing the rich cultural heritage of their Appalachian-inspired farm-to-table cuisine. Both Mike and Amy grew up on farms in West Virginia, but neither started their career in food. Mike initially wanted to be a chef but headed to journalism school instead, which taught him the value of place and storytelling. Amy earned a law degree. Eventually, their interests in food and farming were reignited, and when the opportunity arose in 2013 to purchase the property and reconstruct the farmhouse Amy’s great-great grandfather built in the 1880s, they jumped on it. So began a long, challenging but highly rewarding journey. For two years, Mike and Amy rented an apartment nearby while restoring the farmhouse and doing popup dinners and guest chef nights. They marketed their business as Lost Creek Farm from the start, knowing they’d eventually host formal dinners on the farm featuring ingredients grown and foraged onsite. Once their farm-to-table dinners got going, they went all in on elevating the unique ingredients, recipes and culinary traditions of Appalachia. Along with growing heirloom beans, corn, squash and other vegetables from seeds passed down for generations, their efforts include lots of historical research and collecting oral histories. Because to Mike and Amy, the stories behind ingredients and dishes, which illustrate people’s connection to place, are just as important as flavor. This is especially true given the widespread misconceptions about what Appalachian cuisine actually entails. As the years have gone by, Mike and Amy have built a solid business, attracting guests from all over the country to their farm-to-table dinners. The late Anthony Bourdain and his crew even spent a day dining, swapping stories and filming with them to be featured in one the final episodes of his TV show. But Lost Creek Farm also attracts a fair number of locals familiar with common Appalachian food narratives of shame and desperation. West Virginia's culinary traditions were largely born of necessity––that is, food people ate not because they wanted to, but because they had to. Rather than defining food by the shame of hard times, Lost Creek Farm offers proud narratives about innovative cooks who created complex, healthy dishes with extremely limited resources. Through culinary storytelling, Mike and Amy strive to change the way West Virginians see food as a source of place-based identity. Although they were geared up for a bustling 2020, COVID-19 forced Lost Creek Farm to cancel all dinners and other events for the year. Mike and Amy have stayed plenty busy, though, developing their education curriculum, planning the buildout of their commercial kitchen and classroom, and producing a long-form-narrative podcast, The Pickle Shelf Radio Hour. Lost Creek Farm’s success has proven that people are hungry for authentic, local experiences, flavors and culture. If anything, the pandemic has increased their appetite, which should bode well for this unique multifaceted business.

Mike discusses his path to finding delight in his life. After a childhood of unfulfilled dreams, ADHD and struggles in School, Depression, and the shame of not living up to unrealistic expectations, Mike's life changed when he found God began to realize that service to others and getting outside of oneself provides peace and happiness, which lead him to a decision to serve a 2 year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Indiana. Although Mike's mission was an incredible experience for him and he returned home “on fire” to continually serve others and live of service, Mike lost his footing, went through a divorce, began drinking and using drugs again, which lead to full blown addiction, and after years of this he found himself all alone in pure shame, guilt, and darkness. On the edge, contemplating suicide Mike had an experience through prayer that taught him his value to God and which gave him the courage to, rise up, face the life he had created. Mike decided to forgive himself and take ownership of his life and to carry no shame for past choices but rather to choose to see them as valuable experience that no allows him to serve others in their own dark places. He speaks about the “failures” of his life as his greatest blessings which now give him purpose, Shame as a dark lie, and rising each time we fall.

My name is James Parr. I go by Jim. I'm an attorney here at Agruss Law Firm, and I have been here since 2016.What do I like most about personal injury cases? Someone who has just been injured is often overwhelmed and their life has just been turned upside down. Their focus should be on getting treated for their injuries and getting their life back to normal. At Agruss Law Firm, we are able to give our clients some peace of mind that we're taking care of the rest. We're dealing with the insurance company and the other legal aspects of their case. What's great is that most consumer rights laws are federal statutes. This allows us to help people across the country. Consumer rights issues affect nearly everyone in one way or another. Most of us have received unwanted robocalls. Many of us have had inaccurate information on our credit reports. Many people have had tough times financially and they're being harassed by their creditors and debt collectors for payment. Even if someone owes a debt, creditors and debt collectors still have to follow certain rules when they're attempting to collect these debts, and those rules are often violated and we are here to help. The plaintiff's work that we do means that we represent regular people; regular people to go against big corporations, banks, debt collection agencies, and insurance companies. Most of these places have armies of lawyers at their disposal, and regular people often don't have the money to hire an attorney. Here at Agruss Law Firm, we represent clients on what's known as a contingency, which in simple terms means that we only get paid if our clients get paid. This sort of arrangement is often referred to as giving regular people the key to the courtroom. Most animals are pretty cool, but I have to say that my favorite animal is Chance the Snapper. You might have to Google that one. The app I use most is Words with Friends. Yes, people still play that. There are so many great restaurants here in Chicago with all different types of cuisine, but I'm going to have to say that my favorite food is pizza. It's hard to go wrong with pizza.I try to go on a snowboarding trip once a year. Really, anywhere where I can relax and have fun. Weekends are for hopefully doing something fun, hopefully relax, and hopefully not too much work. But being a lawyer, sometimes that goes with the territory.Working at Agruss Law Firm, it's great. Honestly, we all work very well together. The high level of teamwork allows us to effectively and efficiently work on our client's cases. Although Mike is the boss, he is involved with every case that we sign up.

In 2014, nearly all US-based VCs were reticent to invest in Latin America. But that didn’t stop Washington, DC based QED from building one of Latin America’s most impressive startup portfolios. Before becoming a Partner at QED Investors, Mike’s path into the finance world was not obvious. Mike’s first foray into finance was his job at Capital One where he pursued his passion for using data to solve problems. Today, Mike lives in Tampa, Florida and is a Partner at QED Investors, a venture fund with over  100 mostly fintech investments in the US, UK, and Latin America. QED has been involved in some of Latin America’s top fintech deals including Nubank, Creditas, Credijusto, Guia Bolso, Loft, and Quinto Andar and many more. On this episode of Crossing Borders, I sit down with Mike Packer to talk about his journey from working in banking at Capital One to joining QED as Principal, and then making his way up to Partner. We also learn about how startups should approach venture capital firms for funding and what to expect in fintech in the next coming waves within the region. Lessons learned from ten years at Capital One When Mike was working at Capital One, it was one of the biggest data and information companies in the world. As an analyst, his decisions were heavily data driven: translating raw data into business models, and modeling supply and demand to figure out pricing, who to market to and at what time. Working at Capital One not only taught him about the power of data, but also about how to use it both creatively and in disciplined decision making during the 2008 recession. Check out this episode of Crossing Borders to find out what lessons Mike learned while navigating the financial crisis at one of the US’ major financial institutions. Data can’t always tell the full story. Venture Capital is an industry that requires risk taking to reach an exceptional return. When Mike transitioned from Capital One to QED, he went from a world where he had to use data to tell the story, to one where data might only tell a small part of a startup’s story. This meant taking more risks when evaluating entrepreneurs and deciding who and what to invest in. Find out how Mike decides when to take risks with QED Investors on this episode of Crossing Borders. QED: Investing in Latin America almost by accident Over the past eighteen months, Latin America has gained significant momentum as international VC firms have entered the region. Mike explains that QED’s first foray into Latin America was more good luck rather than initial than strategy. David Velez, the founder of Nubank (valued today at $4B), talked to the QED team about their experience with Capital One, leading to their first Latin American investment. As they saw more opportunities, Latin America became a central part of QED’s thesis. Check out this episode of Crossing Borders to learn how QED has invested in Latin America’s underserved populations and chose to invest in the region’s fintech ecosystem. Mike Packer and QED will soon close their sixteenth investment in Latin America. Although Mike’s job is still in part tied to data, Mike has embraced the value of risk taking (even without the hard data to back it) through his work at QED. His team’s prior experience in finance gives them the ability to get deep in the details of financial services, allowing them to continue growing their portfolio within Latin America’s fintech ecosystem. 7 EQUITY SERIES | MINDSET For the Next 7 weeks we are bringing on an expert in each of the 7 equities. This week we brought back one of our first guests, Mike Diamond. Mike Diamond is a Television Personality, Director, Life Coach, and Interventionist. Known for his work on the hit TV shows NY Ink and Bondi Ink Tattoo Crew, which is currently nominated for a Logie Award for Best Reality Series. Originally from Perth, Western Australia, Mike got off to a bit of a rough start. Battling undiagnosed dyslexia, he started using drugs and alcohol at age 12. At age 16, he was expelled for Aquinas College and finished at Melville H.S. Immediately after graduation, Mike moved to Sydney and enrolled at the Actors Center. He got a job at a local clothing store which, unbeknownst to him at the time, would change his life forever. Lady Luck was on Mike’s side when a customer at the store handed him a Green Card Lottery ticket. Mike won a green card in 1997 and made the move to Miami. Shortly after his arrival, Mike landed a role on the CBS sitcom, Grapevine from Director David Frankel. After Grapevine, Mike moved to NYC, where he worked on various projects including as a guest star on Sex and the City. Mike wrote, created and starred in a VH1 pilot with former STP and Velvet Revolver front man, Scott Weiland. Splitting his time between NYC, Miami and Los Angeles, Mike had regular gigs performing stand up at Caroline’s on Broadway and The Comedy Store. Mike was properly introduced into the tattoo world when he appeared on Miami Ink. He later became the store manager for his good friend, Ami James, at Wooster St and starred on Season 3 of NY Ink. Mike then headed back to his hometown where he wrote, directed, produced, and starred in Bondi Ink Tattoo Crew, based on Bondi Beach. Although Mike has had plenty of “highs” in his life, he has also had his “low” moments along the way. Mike has battled cocaine and alcohol addiction for the majority of his life. The defining moment came at the height of his career while shooting a TV show for VH1. To the outside world, Mike looked like he was living the dream but on the inside, Mike was spiritually bankrupt and miserable. He realized that if he didn’t turn his life around, he was going to die. April 16, 2006 was the day Mike Diamond got sober. Since then, Mike has literally helped hundreds of people on the road to recovery. He is on beck and call to all his clients and friends, helping them through their life problems and battles with addiction. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/projectmindset/support

He also discusses how the system in the USA is changing towards young people with additional needs being given more control over their own futures through what is known as self-direction. Mike also reminds us how important integration is in terms of ensuring that our young person with additional needs can have an independent future even when we are no longer around. Although Mike's journey is not a unique one, there is much to learn from the way he is navigating his way through the challenges. Listening to Mike's story will help you as you plan ahead for your own son or daughter’s future independence. For a full transcript of this interview visit www.journeyskills.com

Eavesdropping at the Movies

DC's search for a cinematic tone continues to lurch between monochrome gravity and Technicolor frivolity, James Wan's Aquaman firmly occupying the latter end of the spectrum. Although Mike has long been amused at how feeble is the concept of a superhero whose power is fish telepathy, the film has a good sense of humour about itself (even if some of the specific jokes are a little clunky) and hugely enjoyable freedom in its design, the giant seahorses a particular charm. We discuss what's to like and dislike about the film's visual design and action, its message that violence is the least good solution to any problem, the welcome wisdom and calmness brought by Willem Dafoe and Dolph Lundgren (yes, really), and its adaptation of Arthurian legend and how it fits into a recent spate of films and television programmes fascinated with monarchy, bloodlines, divine rights and so on. Jose is overall more reserved than Mike but still announces that he enjoyed himself, and the golden rule holds true: the key to happiness is low expectations. Recorded on 29th December 2018.

Today I get to chat with Podbean podcaster, Mike Troy who is the sole host and producer of the American Revolution Podcast: A chronological history of the Revolutionary War. Although Mike's family isn't into history like he is, he found a community of people who love history, and his podcast. Mike also shares a secret..one that is deeply buried on the internet.    Podcasting Smarter Tips From Mike:  To prep for the launch of his podcast, Mike wrote 100, yes 100 episode scripts in advance of his first recording. Impressive!  As a solo podcaster, Mike imagines people listening and responding which got him comfortable solo hosting. He also has a script prepared and edits on the fly as needed with Audacity.  Podcasting helped Mike become a better everyday speaker--another benefit of podcasting!  Because Mike is very organized and well planned, Podbean's scheduling featured allows him to produce his episodes in advance of his publish date, and schedule them accordingly. Smart podcasting!  The podcast helped Mike get out of his shell. Introverted and shy by nature, Mike found a community of fellow history buffs on and off line thanks to his podcast.  Mike is active on social media and successfully connects with his audience online. Without the podcast, his knowledge of social media would never have happened.  Don't focus on your downloads for the first 6 months. Just focus on producing a good episode every time. The numbers will come. Be patient.    Hypothetical Podcast About Mike's Life: "Keep Plugging"  Mike's Fantasy Podcaster: Thomas Paine You can listen to the American Revolution Podcast wherever you listen to podcasts including Podbean, Apple Podcasts, and Stitcher. Show Notes: www.unpackingdesign.com/podcast/09/ In this episode, we talk about Trello which is an app that helps keep us and our teams organized through the use of boards which are the overall projects, lists which are the major headers, and cards that are specific tasks within the lists. These boards, lists, and cards are flexible and could be arranged in any way that we decide. Trello is a user friendly app that allows users to personally organize their lives and projects or collaborate efficiently and effectively with their teams. As an individual, we are able to develop personal projects that are divided into specific lists and cards to help us remember what tasks need to be done to complete the project. Within an organization, Trello can be used to setup boards for business standards, new hires, FAQ’s, and bulletin board-like reminders. Although Mike and Tim have both used Trello, Mike loves the app and Tim quit after several days of using it. As Mike talks about the different ways Trello can be used as both an individual and teams, Tim asks Mike about how he uses the app to organize his projects, to explain the differences between boards, lists, and cards, and to brainstorm how teams can use the app for their projects.

Welcome to Episode 19 of Intersection. Today I sit down for a coffee chat with my good friend (and neighbour!) Mike Shard. I respect Mike so much for his intelligent mind and unique kindness. I also love how he is so willing to dialogue about faith and spirituality and dive into those "deeper" questions. With his career experience as both  lawyer and police officer, he is well-positioned to offer thoughtful insight into understanding conflict and the human condition and how it all relates to our search for happiness and meaning in life. Although Mike doesn't like to label himself, he says his faith position falls somewhere between atheism and agnosticism.  I think this episode is just another example of how when two people of different faith perspectives open up and speak honestly, without judgement, some amazing things can happen.  This episode will challenge and better equip you to have these types of conversations yourself.  Enjoy!

In today's episode we interview Mike Michalowicz, author of 4 different business books.  We had no intention of turning our conversation into a Commandment, but Mike shared so many great insights that we had to do it.  Mike is the author of Surge, Profit First, The Pumpkin Plan and the Toilet Paper Entrepreneur.  He is also a popular keynote speaker and successful podcaster. Mike built and sold two multi-million dollar companies by his 35th birthday.  Confident that he'd discovered the secrets to success, he became an angel investor... and proceeded to lose his entire fortune.  Now building his third multi-million dollar company based on the thesis of Profit First, Mike shares his insights with us on the program.  Although Mike shared a lot of insights and fascinating stories in and about his books, we thought his advice from The Pumpkin Plan was spot on for real estate agents.  In order to get noticed, you have to be different!  You shouldn't expect to gain the attention from the marketplace by being exactly like every other real estate agent out there, you have to be different in order to get noticed.  Think about it - the human brain is conditioned over millions of years to notice things that are out of the ordinary.  If you're watching a freeway with car after car whizzing by, you'll get bored pretty quickly.  Wouldn't a person riding a giraffe down the freeway immediately grab and hold your attention?  Of course it would! Remember though, being different doesn't guarantee success, it only guarantees that you'll get attention.  What you do with that attention depends on you!  At the end of the episode, Mike fills us in on his hit book, Profit First, and talks about the critical takeaways from that book that can be applied to every real estate agent out there.  If you're struggling in your business, whether it's in real estate or any other business, give this episode a listen, you won't be disappointed! Mike Day served over twenty-one years on the SEAL Teams, leading his men into battle. On his final mission in Iraq, Mike's team stacked behind him as he led them into a twelve-by-twelve-foot room of a building suspected of housing a group of deadly Al Qaeda insurgents. Mike was shot twenty-seven times and suffered shrapnel wounds from a grenade that detonated within a few feet of where he was standing. Mike reflected on the incident some seven years later: “It was a miracle that I survived; it's still hard to believe!” He spent a year recovering from his wounds. “The military did an outstanding job of treating my physical wounds; however, the neurological and emotional wounds were more difficult to diagnose and treat.” Although Mike retired from the Navy in 2010, he continues to lead fellow warriors as a full-time case manager and care advocate. Mike inspires those who may be reluctant to seek assistance with PTSD and/or TBI, through his willingness to speak openly about how to effectively recognize and manage symptoms. He also works to provide his fellow wounded warriors with access to customized brain injury treatment programs that offer a non-pharmacological approach to treating TBI and other neurological issues. “While I am grateful for the VA, there are several organizations that are revolutionizing the treatment of brain injuries; one of them is the Carrick Brain Center.” Current estimates suggest that as many as 300,000 former and current service members have some degree of brain injury.  To help Mike raise funds for the care and treatment of wounded warriors and dependent children who have suffered severe brain injuries, check out this link: https://www.crowdrise.com/mikedaystrichallenge/fundraiser/mikeday.

Mike and Jay open with a look at the G7 meeting in Quebec, Canada. They agree that President Trump's protectionism is bad policy, though Jay still thinks that the president might be using his tough talk as a negotiating tactic and may not impose long-term tariff barriers. Mike says that President Trump's call to readmit Russia to the group is a horrible idea because, unlike the G7 countries, Russia is not a real democracy. Then it's a discussion of the Supreme Court's 7-2 ruling in the Masterpiece Cakeshop case. The Guys agree that this was a very narrow ruling (in scope, not vote split) and that the Court should have addressed the key free expression issue that was raised. Although Mike is a strong supporter of LGBTQ rights, he thinks the concurrence of Justices Gorsuch and Thomas, which argues that forcing the baker to create a cake for a same-sex wedding is a form of unconstitutional compelled speech, makes some strong points. After that, it's immigration - first the move by House GOP moderates to force a vote on allowing Dreamers to stay in the country legally, and then a discussion of rising illegal border crossing arrests, the wisdom of the Trump administration's 'family separation' and 'zero tolerance' policies, and a big-picture look at what U.S. immigration policy should be. Finally, Mike and Jay talk about President Trump's commutation of Alice Marie Johnson's sentence and his view that he can pardon himself, if he so chooses. *Listener support helps make The Politics Guys possible*.
