Cape Town-based fintech start-up Stitch last month caught the attention of many people when it announced it was raising R1-billion (US$55-million) in a significant series-B funding round. Co-founder and CEO Kiaan Pillay is our guest in this episode of the TechCentral Show, where he tells TechCentral editor Duncan McLeod about the funding round, which was led by QED Investors with participation from a range of new and existing investors. The latest round brings Stitch's total funding to date to nearly R2-billion, or $107-million. In this episode of the TechCentral Show, Pillay unpacks: • His background and why and how Stitch was founded; • How well-known South African comedian Trevor Noah became one of the participating funders in the latest funding round; • What Stitch is doing differently to other fintech and payment start-ups that has allowed to raise the quantum of funding that it has; • The significance of Stitch's recent acquisition of Exipay – and why it's important for Stitch to be a player in the in-person payments market; • Stitch's plans in the cryptocurrency space; and • Why the company is focused (for now) on the South African market. Did you know that despite what appeared to be a tough time for funding and valuations, the global fintech report coauthored by Boston Consulting Group and QED Investors in June this year noted that the global fintech market remained a hotbed for innovation and growth.  The firms expect fintech to reach a market size of US$1.5 trillion in revenue by 2030. That's about a five times growth from numbers seen at the time the report was written. However, the report, which was based on interviews with over 60 global fintech CEOs and investors, noted that the rules of the game are changing, with growth at all cost, in their words, “no longer the watchword”. So what are the major themes shaping the financial technology sector in the longer term? What are the headwinds facing the industry right now and how far are they short-term corrections?  And more importantly, what role will Singapore play in the growing fintech space for startups and industry heavyweights? As part of MONEY FM's on the ground coverage of Singapore Fintech Festival 2024, Money Matters' Finance Presenter Chua Tian Tian posed these questions to Shayan Hazir, Chief Digital Officer of ASEAN at HSBC and Reuben Lim, CEO at the Singapore FinTech Association.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This is a public episode. In recent years, we've seen home insurance premiums soar by historic amounts. Not only have prices gone up, but in some instances, we've seen national carriers simply announce that they're abandoning certain states. So, what's behind the mess? Why isn't competition causing markets to come into balance? What is the role of state insurance regulators? On this episode we speak with two guests who help us understand the problem. Amias Gerety is a partner at QED Investors, and a board member for the insurance company Kin. RJ Lehmann is the editor-in-chief for the International Center for Law & Economics. The two of them discuss insurance from both the financial side and the regulatory side. Frank Rotman, Chief Investment Officer at QED Investors, makes his triumphant return to the podcast to share his wisdom on all things lending. As the first Chief Credit Officer at Capital One (before this role officially existed), Frank has an incredibly rich and nuanced perspective on topics like cashflow underwriting, the value of traditional credit data vs alternative data, and payment protection insurance.   In this conversation, Frank and Alex break down the importance of distinguishing willingness to pay for a loan from the ability to pay for a loan when assessing creditworthiness and wax poetic about what possibilities fintech might be missing out on when it simplifies the credit building down to these two characteristics. And stay tuned because later, Alex asks Frank for his predictions for the future of fintech and financial services and Frank's answers are unlike any other predictions you've heard!    00:00:53 - From Lending to Writing: Frank's Journey 00:03:05 - The Nuance of Credit Underwriting 00:09:21 - Building Sophisticated Underwriting Models with Capital One 00:18:12 - Understanding Reg B: Equal Credit Opportunity Act Implementation 00:26:10 - Maximizing Accurate Pricing of Risk 00:29:49 - Why Companies Must Explain Declines 00:36:38 - The Unique Marvel of American Mortgages 00:49:10 - The Truth About Predatory Lending 00:55:18 - Innovating Credit and Insurance Delivery   Sign up for Alex's Fintech Takes newsletter for the latest insightful analysis on fintech trends, along with a heaping pile of pop culture references and copious footnotes. We know, we know… Prediction episodes are so cliché. And somehow, experts have an incredible way of dramatically overestimating what we, as an industry, can accomplish in the next year while also dramatically underestimating what we can do in the next ten. So, let's reframe the way we do predictions; how about that? Frank Rotman, the Chief Investment Officer at QED Investors who dislikes end-of-year predictions with all of his heart, gamely gives Alex his 10-year estimate of what the fintech landscape will look like… and can we just say — his answers are absolute dynamite! He maps out what rapidly progressing AI capabilities mean for the stock market, why financial institutions will be forced to completely restructure their costs, and how the intrabank settlement process will, at long last, be modernized.  And one last, final prediction? This episode will age like a glass of fine wine. Capital One is such an iconic brand that it is hard to imagine a time before it. But when Nigel Morris co-founded the business in 1994, it was wildly innovative—from the products it introduced to the market (like secured credit cards) to a data-driven approach to customer segmentation to an emphasis on team culture. Today, Capital One is one of the largest retail banks in the United States, serving more than 100 million customers across a diverse set of businesses. Nigel's career didn't stop there: he went on to start QED Investors, a fintech venture capital platform that has invested in companies like Credit Karma, Nubank, and Klarna. Nigel shares why Capital One's early success came down to rapid execution, why restlessness is a positive trait for founders, and how one interesting use case of AI is powering one-to-one marketing.

Frank Rotman is a founding partner of QED Investors, one of the leading fintech-focused venture firms investing today with a portfolio including the likes of Klarna, Kavak, Quinto Andar, Credit Karma and more. As for Frank, prior to QED, Frank was one of the earliest analysts hired into Capital One and spent almost 13 years there helping build many of the company's business units and operational areas.  Jason Lemkin is the Founder @ SaaStr one of the best-performing early-stage venture funds focused on SaaS. In the past, Jason has led investments in Algolia, Pipedrive, Salesloft, TalkDesk, and RevenueCat to name a few. Prior to SaaStr, Jason was an entrepreneur, selling EchoSign to Adobe for $100M where it is now a $250M ARR product. In Today's Discussion on Why Seed is Broken We Discuss: 1. The Seed Model Was Broken and What Comes Now: Why does Sam Lessin believe the model for seed of a "factory line" was broken? What does he believe will replace it? Why does Jason Lemkin argue that this might not be the case for SaaS and enterprise? 2. Round Construction: YC, Multi-Stage Funds and Party Rounds: Why does Sam Lessin believe we have seen the end of party rounds? Why does Jason Lemkin disagree and we will see more than ever? Why does Sam Lessin believe the factory model of YC churning out companies is over? Where does Jason Lemkin believe the value lies in the YC model? Will the multi-stage funds remain in seed? How has their entrance and deployment changed the seed market? 3. VC Value Add at Seed: Is it BS? Why does Jason believe all talent arms in venture firms have failed? Why does Sam believe that no VCs provide value? Do the best founders really need help? Why do Jason and Sam disagree? 4. What Happens Now: Why does Jason believe that every manager can write off their fund from 2021? Who will be the winners in seed in the next 10 years? Why does Sam believe if you want to bet on AI, just bet on Meta or Microsoft? What will happen to the many companies with no PMF but 10 years of runway?
