Today on the Dads with Daughters Podcast we spoke with Mike Schrettenbrunner and his daughters Laynie and Libby. Mike and his girls share with us the story of the book the three of them wrote together and what this has done to connect with other families. 4 years ago Mike decided to sit down and build a story with his daughters who were in 1st and 4th grade at the time. As Mike said, it was just a goofy idea, something that they could do together. Plus, it would help his youngest daughter who was just learning to put sentences together. That activity turned into a published book named Pumpkin Head Tom and Mummy Mary. It has turned his kids and himself into published coauthors and specifically turned his daughters into content creators, video mixers and presenters to small children. As Mike shared “Dads all across the land can do this too”. If you've enjoyed today's episode of the Dads With Daughters podcast we invite you to check out the Fatherhood Insider. With all the elements of a political thriller, this episode investigates the intrigue, derangement, and plain stupidity, of the origins and workings of the Transport Assets Holding Entity (TAHE). Our legal reporter Mike Holland outlines the peculiar status of TAHE – a shell company set up to hold the $40 billion costs of running public transport in New South Wales in order to keep the costs of running the roads, trains, buses, and transport infrastructure out of the New South Wales budget, and maintain the states Triple-A credit rating. As Mike also reports, the governments' plan to commercialise the entire transport system has landed it in deep trouble - from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the previous Auditor General of New South Wales, other governmental agencies and political commentators, who have described the scheme as "financial trickery" and a mammoth waste of taxpayers money. Mike Capone is the CEO of Qlik, a business intelligence company that provides end-to-end cloud data integration and data analytics solutions for organizations around the world. Mike leads a team of over 2,600 people around the world. Mike's experience as a leader started at the age of 24 when he was working in IT and he says he was totally unprepared for it. At the time he had no training, no experience, and he found it very intimidating at first. But with time, advice, and on the job learning he figured things out. He says that his progression from an entry level leader to being the CEO leading over 2,600 people came about because of hard work, a willingness to volunteer for the hard jobs, and the ability to help others be successful. The things that made a difference in Mike's career Jamie Dimon, the Chairman and CEO of JPMorgan Chase, is a leader that Mike really respects and someone that he has watched for a long time. In an interview Jamie shared that when it comes to success, there is no substitute for hard work. And Mike agrees with that completely, people who work hard get rewarded. But while that is a huge part of achieving your goals, there are other important things to focus on. Mike says you also have to be unafraid to volunteer for tough jobs. In Mike's own career there was a time when he was working for Oracle Financials when the company was rolling out a global financial system and they had already gone through two separate leaders who had been placed in the roll and then let go. One day Mike was selected to be the next leader of the project, and everyone around him told him not to take it--it's where people's careers go to die. But Mike saw it as an opportunity to get noticed and advance his career. So he took the job and sure enough it was a huge stepping stone for him. As Mike shares, it is a combination of things that get you to the level of CEO, but if no one notices you and if no one knows who you are, then it doesn't matter, you won't get ahead. You have to have people believe that you are a key to their success. Mike's leadership style One thing that is very important to Mike as a leader is listening twice as much as he talks. As a leader it is so important to let other people talk, even if you already know the answer. It's also important to have diverse opinions and backgrounds around you. But it's equally important to be decisive as a leader. You have to listen, listen, listen, then decide and move on. “You always want to control the future and not let the future control you. But that said, like, that is the biggest failure I've seen of leaders is this kind of paralysis, this inability to decide. And you'd be hard pressed to find somebody who would accuse me of that, they'll accuse me of ready, fire aim sometimes, right. But they'll never accuse me of, you know, not deciding something quickly.” There are going to be tough decisions that you have to make as a leader, but time is not going to make it go away. Some leaders also struggle with trying to build consensus around a decision, they want to be popular and liked, and while it is normal to want to be liked, you're not always going to be and that shouldn't stop you from making a decision. “I always tell leaders, look, you have to do the listening and let people know they're heard, then you've got to use your best judgment and the data at hand and decide, and then your team has to get behind you. Time for discussing and then time for deciding and time for action.” And if he makes a bad decision, Mike says he admits it and fixes it fast. He doesn't dwell on it or let it eat at him. What to do if you feel stuck in your job Most of us have had a moment or moments in our career when we feel like we are stagnant and there is no way to move inside a company. It can be frustrating and disengaging. So what should you do in this situation? Mike says before you make a decision, take a look at yourself. How much do you market yourself? How much are you trying to get noticed? Are you working on gaining new skills and improving the ones you have? There are a lot of ways you can change your situation. Mike says, “If you're not fulfilled coming to work every single day, you've got to do something about that. You can't just complain about it. And I know economically, people sometimes say, well, I need this job. That's great, like, you need the job, but you know, then skill yourself up. So your life isn't dependent on that particular job and then go find something else. But don't stay in a situation you're not happy in.” Two things that hold leaders back There are two main things that Mike says hold leaders back from their full potential. The first one is that leaders tend to think that the thing that got them where they are today is the thing to get them there tomorrow. They think that because they have a playbook that has worked before that they can just keep running the same one. There's a reason why most CEOs don't last more than 5 years, because after that time they have to reinvent the thing that they invented, and it's really hard to admit that what you did before isn't lasting. But the pace of change is fast, and the world is changing so quickly. You can't keep doing the same thing over and over. The other thing that Mike says holds leaders back is thinking their time is more important than anyone else's. This mindset manifests itself in canceling meetings, showing up late to meetings, being on your phone when someone is talking to you, etc...When you are in a meeting or talking with someone, be present completely. Multitasking doesn't work, it's just a productivity killer. If you need to respond to emails or text messages, set aside time for that. What sets great leaders apart from good ones There are a lot of leaders who can get things done through command and control, but the great leaders inspire the people around them. People are jumping in the boat because they want to follow that leader. It's all about inspiration. And this is something you can work on. Find people around you that model great leadership and watch them. Find someone who can mentor you. Practice things like empathy, listening, caring for others every single day. Catch people doing good things and let them know with an email, a call or a letter. It takes hard work and practice, but it's worth it in the long run and it will ensure your success as a leader. Now more than ever we need to take a step back to define what it means to be a leader and what great leadership looks like. But this isn't easy to do. In fact, many business leaders struggle with this. You cannot become and build what you don't define. In the PDF you will get a framework you can follow and also see how some of the world's top CEOs define leadership. Click here to get the PDF. God tells Jeremiah, "I AM. Is anything too difficult for me?" I need to memorize this verse. Jeremiah is in prison. The 2nd siege of Jerusalem is at hand. Babylon is about to wipe way the Jews, but not really. In fact, God just had Jeremiah buy some land! Let that sink in. Jeremiah is in prison! The city is under siege. Nations disappeared back in this time. During their lives, they had seen other nations get absorbed by a conquering nation and the name and the people were gone. But God tells Jeremiah to buy some land. What does this tell you today? Because of whom you are and who you belong to, you can step into any problem. You can look for ways to serve others in any situation. Is anything too difficult for God? Where do we need to go beyond our comfort zone? Where do we need to give more than we think we can? Can you give more than you're asked? Can you go an extra mile? Can you give more than seems reasonable? As Mike recorded this, he even talked about his own conviction. Let's let God move us into an area where our actions seem extreme, but God gets the glory. Is it too difficult for God to give you the time to practice being a missionary in your workplace? Why not join us on the next Marketplace Mission Trip. You will invest a few minutes every morning and evening for 2 weeks to trust God with your actions and your work life. The Summer Sixers hit a bump in the road when Tyrese Maxey left, but we talk about whether Maxey could start, the contributions of Joe and Springer, and B-Ball Paul. We also discuss The Athletic's new tiers of NBA players, whether we'd rather have Seth Curry or Tobias Harris, the evolving Ben Simmons and Damian Lillard situations, and whether acai bowls are a fad. Special thanks to TJ Fiorillo (through Adam Ksebe of course) for helping Spike find his North Jersey home. As Mike can attest to, dealing with Spike isn't always easy. Mike Morawski is a 30+ year real estate investment veteran. Mike is an entrepreneur, author, real estate trainer, public speaker, and personal coach with a strong, personal resilience, and deep desire to help others live an extraordinary life. He has coached hundreds of real estate investors to fulfill their dreams. Mike has always believed that transparency and honesty are central to any successful business and personal life. As a result of the 2008 world economic crisis, Mike let his guard down and let his transparency slip. Due to the market climate, he found himself in a defensive mode operating out of chaos and fear. In an attempt to protect his company's investors, Mike had to make difficult business decisions. Some of those decisions were handled poorly. As a result of those poor decisions, the company imploded and Mike faced wire and mail fraud charges which lead to a 10-year federal prison sentence. This was a devastating loss of life as he knew it and everything he thought was important and came as a harsh wake-up call. Mike used his time in prison to make a difference. He worked to receive his college bachelor's degree. Mike developed and taught bible studies, ethics, real estate, and property management classes. Mike's resilient mindset helped him turn things around. Now Mike is focused on helping real estate owner/operators and other industry professionals make wise, responsible decisions while continuing to grow their businesses and create a profit. The positive impact Mike can have on you comes from learning from his experiences, both positive and negative. Mike offers to be what he did not have during that time – someone to help you make tough decisions when challenges come your way. Mike's comeback story will inspire you and open your eyes. Entrepreneurs are often faced with decisions that impact the rest of their life. As Mike experienced, those choices can either be positive or devastatingly negative. Today Michael's passion is sharing his knowledge and wisdom with others for their gain. Mike is the host of the Insider Secrets Podcast and the co-host of Multi-family Unplugged Vidcast. Michael has built My Core Intentions training and coaching platform to help real estate investors and industry professionals excel in their field. His Core principle is to teach his clients how to create “short-term cash flow and long-term wealth.” This is delivered through live and virtual training events, and three levels of personal coaching. Hi y'all, producer Samuel here. As Mike mentions on the show, I'm on assignment this week so I'm not on the show. That said the show features Mike Gianella, Jon Hegglund, and Mikey Ajeto from Pitcher List talking about...something. I asked what I should look out for and I was told "There are swears." So, there's that. I'm assuming there's some baseball talk in there as well. I heard the word "Giants" a few time, so there's something you can latch onto. Mike Sussman is a physician assistant and co-creator of American Yogi with his brother Phil. Mike joined me today to discuss what the mission of American Yogi is, a movement to break the stigma that yoga is not for everyone. As Mike says, yoga is the most inclusive community that a person can be apart of, everyone is welcome. The service American Yogi provides is amazing, it is more that a clothing brand, it is truly a community of unlikely (at least from societies narrative) individuals of veterans, first responders, and so called tough guys finding balance with yoga and connecting with people outside of their realm. Hello everybody and welcome to this week's episode of Attendance Bias. This week's guest is trumpet for DC-based bands, Skyscrapers and the Monumental Brass Quintet, Mike Lowe. As Mike's band played their first gigs and figured out their sound as indie jam rock, COVID hit and the band had to take a forced hiatus from the stage. But as you'll hear him say in today's episode, they're getting ready to return to the U Street bars in Washington. For today's episode, Mike picked a monster jam; “Fluffhead” from July 24, 1999 at Alpine Valley. Indeed, this version of Fluffhead is unlike any other that the band has played. Stretching for over 32 minutes, with a type 2 jam that is almost entirely led by Mike's melodic bass playing, the band has yet to play a version that displays an equal amount of musical creativity. Mike describes how fans had their jaws drop to the floor after it was played, unexpectedly as the second song of the show. So let's join Mike to talk about his band Skyscrapers, Phish's sound in 1998, and "Fluffhead" from July 24, 1999 at Alpine Valley.

Mike Rea is the Founder and CEO of IDEA Pharma and Founder of Protodigm, created to develop a new way of progressing drug development. With a fundamental understanding of what goes wrong in early-stage pharmaceutical development, Mike is eager to do more diverse opportunity-seeking for assets in early phase trials. The skunkworks model draws decision and data scientists as well as the pharma people to think outside the box. In this episode, we talk with our guest Mike Pirog about Lando, the free and open source local development tool. Mike is the Co-Founder of Tandem, a full service digital agency in the PHP space, and the maker of Lando. Lando offers a high degree of flexibility for common setups, and it's now fully integrated with Platform.sh. How to use LandoLando is based on Docker as the underlying engine, and it's primarily for PHP projects, but it can be used for any kind of project. As Mike defines Lando, “The general idea of Lando is I have a Git repository. And I've checked in a configuration file that tells Lando what kinds of things I need to run, develop, and test my project. And the idea is you should be able to sort of Git clone that repository down and run Lando start and end up with all the things that you need to run your project and develop your project locally on your computer.”The two main layers of LandoMike explains that Lando has two main layers.Docker compose wrapper — “... collapses the configuration to the most relevant things, but also sort of leaves some exposition for the Docker compose stuff. But it also allows you to do some other things like configuring proxy routes, which are essentially like nice URLs to access your services. That Docker out-of-the-box can't do.”Recipes — “Takes that Lando configuration and collapses it even further into specific development use cases, such as Drupal 8, Laravel, MEAN Stack, Joomla, and more.”Standout Lando featuresThere are alternatives to Lando in the local development space, and they have their merits. But Lando has something that makes it stand out to its 11,000 monthly users. Mike believes Lando's balance between ease of use and flexibility make the difference. “Lando's breadth and depth is what's allowed it to become especially popular,” says Mike. “If you want to just have a two line configuration file and have Lando manage everything, it'll do that. But if you have a complicated application that has very weird requirements, Lando can probably handle that as well.”Try Lando with Platform.sh documentation: https://docs.lando.dev/config/platfor...Platform.shLearn more about us.Get started with a free trial.Have a question? Mike, like a lot of us, waited until he got some bad news to start working out. His doctor was watching his cholesterol levels sky rocket and told him that he needed to change his lifestyle before it was too late. That coupled with losing family members to cardiovascular disease, really made him think. So why does that light spark for some and not others? Some perhaps just don't believe it or maybe "seeing really is believing" . That French fry definitely won't kill you, but put that together with a poor lifestyle and things will turn bleak. Maybe the issue is that it is a slow process, so not degenerating quickly, makes you believe it isn't true. What does taking care of the whole person mean?Mike talks about how they take care of the whole person, which to him means going beyond just that 30 minutes you workout together. In order to really achieve your goals, things need to be IN sync with each other. That means staying hydrated, working out, eating enough protein, or just walking a little bit more. He focuses on all of these to really make sure you stay on the right track. On thing he does is Reverse Dieting. Which is when they actual increase their clients calorie goals instead of decreasing it. Eating too little is detrimental to our goals because we trick our brain to not thinking there is enough food around. This causes us to actually start burning muscle and end up looking skinny fat. It is imperative that we focus on eating enough food especially protein so we can maintain lean muscle mass and really hit our target. Another concept we touched is treating instead of cheating. Cheating is too negative and makes us feeling like we are doing something wrong. So instead if we focused on cheating, we should change it to treating, which implies that we deserve that treat because we hit all our other goals for that month. This time around, Kevin and Mike get into the groove with Liz Phair’s debut album, Exile in Guyville. Before they break it down, Mike suffers the embarrassment of mispronouncing the name of our bestest pal, Arianne, and Kevin proclaims the gospel of Ted Leo. The guys discuss the history and artistry of Exile in Guyville, chatting about the album’s forthright lyricism, its evocative guitar work, and its storied association with Exile on Main Street by the Rolling Stone. As Mike's boxer puppy Delphie frolics in the background, they run through the record track by track, comparing notes about the style and substance of Liz Phair’s first big splash. Before signing off, Mike reveals his pick for the next episode. Related, recommended, and required resources for this episode: Brigette Bardot: "Contact!" Open Mike has made it to triple-digits! On our landmark, 100th installment, Mike reunites with three former guest exonerees, Aaron Salter, Julie Baumer, and Kenny Wyniemko, as well as two journalists who have been blazing a path to illuminate the wrongful conviction crisis, Kevin Dietz and Bill Proctor. In this groundbreaking centenary episode, our guests reflect on their detestable experiences in the criminal justice system, update us on their current initiatives and whereabouts, and offer us their opinions on the future of the justice reform movement amidst a still-divided political climate. Plus… Mike provides a development on his own plans to dive headfirst into the arena of justice reform. Show Notes [00:01] Mike Morse: Well first, let me start out by saying thank you for everyone being here. It's a trip down memory lane. Seeing all your faces, Julie and Aaron and Kenny and Bill and Kevin Dietz, celebrating our 100th episode… I didn't think we would get here. When I started the podcast, it was just kind of out of fun. And I wanted to learn, and I wanted to do something because podcasts were all the rage. I never thought we’d get to 100 podcasts. The fact that you guys are here to help me celebrate 100 is very meaningful to me. The fact that my producers just told me that we're over 3 million downloads and listens. That's rare. When I started this podcast, we didn't know which direction fully it was going to go. And when I first met Aaron Salter, Episode 32, and Aaron told me his story, I remember the emotions, I remember the sadness, I remember the shock. Being a lawyer, 28 years handling only civil cases… that this was happening in our justice system was outrageous to me. And then meeting Kenny and Julie and several others, it really did affect me, it really did change me. And at the end of this podcast, I'm going to make an announcement, I'm going to tell you guys something that I haven't told many people. All of your sharing, and courage, and love that you've shown me… and the fact that we are now friends, we talk, we have lunch, we text each other, we help each other — it’s changed my life for the better. And it's meaningful to me, and the fact that it's only been a year and a half that I didn't think this was coming. And then I'm still growing up as an attorney and learning things about the law, which I admit I think is pretty cool. So, I thank Kevin Dietz for introducing me to this stuff, because I was probably your idea to have Aaron on, and introducing me to these amazing people has changed my life. And to be quite honest, it’s changed my family's life. I have three daughters, two of them are in college, and they are watching our episodes. They were both social work, social work, education majors, and now they're talking to me about social justice classes. They're talking to me about law school. And I think it's because of the three of you, and Bill, and others. I wasn't even planning on talking about that, but that's true. I mean, I was sitting with my freshmen last night looking at her classes, and she was looking at social justice and criminal reform and classes like that. It's hard to turn away, it's hard to not want to learn more and hear more. [02:56] MM: So, saying all that, I'm going to start with Aaron Salter. And Aaron, your story is amazing, heartbreaking. Scary that it could happen to such a nice young man who was, you know, won a partial college scholarship on his way to Arkansas. And the fact that this happened to you, I'd like you to tell our listeners and viewers who maybe didn't see Episode 32 a little bit about what happened you starting in 2003? [05:01] In 2003, Aaron was with his cousin when a drug deal went awry, and his cousin was shot twelve times — and survived. The person who shot Aaron’s cousin shot another person three days later, and Aaron was misidentified as the perpetrator. [05:21] MM: Where were you when you were arrested? You were at a family member's house? [07:21] Aaron Salter: From the very beginning, a female named Joanne Thomas, the deceased’s sister, actually stood up in court and said she knew I didn’t kill her brother, that the person who killed him was a guy named E. Everybody should have been stepping up to be like, “Well, okay, I knew there are holes in this case, I know that testimony is powerful.” There is no way that I should have still gone to prison. Like that should have been a wake-up call for somebody, somewhere to be like, Okay, well, maybe we rushed this. But they didn't do it. [08:26] Kevin Dietz: And then you end up in prison. Did you realize at some point, “Wow, innocent people end up in prison, this happens in real life?” [9:03] KD: What was the key to getting out, what was the turning point? [9:06] AS: Man, the turning point was when my when my federal defender team actually submitted an application to the conviction integrity unit. And when they did that, I was out within like 30 to 60 days. [09:26] MM: Refresh our memories —what was the smoking gun that that the conviction integrity unit, hung their hat on to finally allow you out? [10:35] MM: Prosecution withheld your mugshot from defense until the conviction integrity unit was just able to access it from the evidence room. Why didn’t they want you to have thar? [10:39] AS: Because for one my whole claim was suggestive identification. [10:55] MM: Didn't your height and weight not add up to a witness? Weren't there witness identifications that were skinnier and shorter? [11:50] MM: You were also in prison with the man who actually committed the crime, is that true? [12:53] AS: Absolutely. I was in a prison with him. He wrote a letter to my attorney saying that he’ll be able to help me if I can assign some type of contract to compensate him for a statement. But my attorney ruled his stuff out — you’re basically putting your testimony for hire man, so that's not even credible. We couldn't even use him if we wanted to… but he reached out to my attorney and everything organically. [14:44] MM: One of the biggest things I've learned over the last year and a half is that if you're paroled in Michigan, for a crime you committed, you have all these wonderful benefits. You get money, you get housing, job help, medical…. But if you're exonerated for a crime you didn't commit, you get nothing. You saw a void in this system, and you bought you use your hard-earned money that you got after your lawsuit. And you bought a house so you could put people up. Tell us a little bit about that. [16:09] MM: A lot of us are wearing or have these pins that I'm showing to the camera: Innocence Maintained: Better not Bitter. Can you tell our listeners and viewers what this is? [16:49] MM: Tell us about this app you’ve created for exonerees — how is it going to help people who are wrongfully convicted? [17:43] The app will be revealed on August 15th at an Exoneree Awards ceremony taking place at the Detroit Yacht Club. [18:17] MM: That’s awesome! Save us a table — we’re coming. We're going to turn to Julie Baumer who's sitting to your right. Julie Baumer, Episode 77 on the Open Mike Show. Julie has another really heartbreaking story. She was arrested for doing the right thing, seeking medical help for her for her sick baby nephew. She was convicted with no evidence of any abuse. Just two doctors testifying about Shaken Baby Syndrome, which we now know is junk science. It's such junk science that they’ve changed the name to Abusive Head Trauma. You had a terrible defense attorney, not presenting any evidence in your first trial to help you. And you had the first case at the Michigan Innocence Clinic in Ann Arbor took that did not involve DNA evidence. So, you are kind of a famous person up there. But tell us a little bit about your story. And for the people who have not heard or seen it. [19:43] Julie Baumer: Basically, my younger sister ended up getting pregnant, it was an unplanned pregnancy. With the support of my family, I chose to do an in-family adoption. After Philip was born, he was hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit for about a week. So, we knew that there was going to be some form of complications. We didn't know the extent of it. When he was five weeks old, he basically had a medical breakdown, if you will, because he completely stopped eating. And he just became very lethargic. So of course, I called his pediatrician and, and by direction of his pediatrician, I took him into the ER in Macomb County. The county transferred him down to Children's Hospital where, 24 hours later, he was undergoing brain surgery to relieve pressure in his brain. His brain had swollen. 24 hours after that, I was invited into the sheriff's department to interview. At that point I was I realized that I was a suspect for child abuse. And so immediately, my family and I started our defensive. Initially we went back to the birth, which was traumatic, during which my sister had been given two doses of Pitocin. So, we thought there were some definite issues during the birth. However, several months later, I was formally charged with child abuse first degree. And 18 months later, I was convicted and sentenced to 15 years. [22:06] MM: You actually had two trials… what happened after your first conviction? [22:10] JB: I immediately began the appeal process. After I exhausted all of my appeals by the grace of God, ironically, that same year in 2009, U of M, opened up the non-DNA Innocence Clinic and I was able to get my case heard. I was granted a second trial, where I had several doctors who testified on my behalf that weren't available during my first trial. They clearly stated that there was no crime committed at all. Unfortunately, my nephew had suffered a form of childhood stroke, venous sinus thrombosis. And I was exonerated completely. [23:36] MM: How long were you in prison? [23:45] MM: Thank God you had good attorneys for after the second trial. You’ve been out ten years — can you give us an update on your life? What are you doing these days? [24:09] JB: I've nestled myself into a nice little community where I work as a realtor. And to fill some void and give my part back, I indulged in several service clubs, and do a lot of volunteer work. [24:38] MM: Well, thank you for sharing your story again with us today. All the details, Julie Baumer, Episode 77, on the Open Mike Show. And last but not least, Kenny Wyniemko one of the craziest stories I think anybody could ever hear. We did two episodes on Kenny, 45 and 50. As I'm interviewing more people, getting myself into this world, your story almost checks all the boxes of what could go wrong in one of these types of cases. Starting with, dirty cops, a jailhouse snitch, a corrupt prosecutor, a bad judge. On and on — and that's probably why Netflix did a whole show on you. That's probably why you have this fabulous book that your friend Bob wrote about you, Deliberate Injustice. Kenny, I think about your story all the time, as I do with all the stories. You're also you're wearing your Innocence Project shirt, which will tell us about… For the viewers who have not seen our four plus hours on you, why don't you give us a couple minutes on what happened to you? [26:31] Kenny Wyniemko: Well, first of all, Mike, thank you for the kind words. It's always a pleasure being with you and my fellow exonerees. What happened to me unfortunately, I was arrested in 1994, and charged 10 weeks after this rape happened. And at the time that rape happened, it was a big story in the Detroit Free Press, The Detroit News, Macomb Daily, our local paper. And I remember reading about the rape and thinking to myself that, no one should have to go through that. No way. July 14th, 10 weeks later, I was arrested and charged with 15 counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct, one count of Breaking and Entering, and one count of Armed Robbery… [34:41] MM: It’s a good story, and it leads into why you think you were behind bars for so many years. What was your next encounter with the Clinton Township police? [35:19] On July 14th, 1994, Kenny was awoken by a woman in a business suit asking if he was Kenny Wyniemko. When he responded affirmatively, she moved aside, and four police officers rushed into his living room, pinned him down, handcuffed him, and took him to the Macomb County police department to be identified in a lineup. He had no idea what they were talking about, requested to call an attorney, and was denied. Kenny was put in a lineup, but ultimately released from the station. When he returned home to shower, a plain clothes police officer refused to let Kenny in until the police had a search warrant, pulling a gun on Kenny and pointing it at his head. Kenny went to his parents to shower and, upon his return, found that his house had been ransacked by the police and unnecessarily vandalized. The next day, he returned home after going to the grocery store to replace broken items and was met by eight police — some with sawed-off shotguns — who stated he had been identified in the previous day’s lineup and was under arrest. [42:48] MM: As you’re talking, I'm now remembering why we spent so many hours with you — because you're a damn good storyteller. For those of you who are interested, Episodes 45 and 50 have so many twists and turns. For those of you who want to hear more, be sure to check out those episodes. Now, I want to turn to now is your work with Innocence Project. [43:58] KW: Well, this project is responsible for my release! I was still locked up in prison and I happened to see Barry Scheck on Phil Donahue Show talking about how he's working with DNA that would prove someone's guilt or innocence. So, I wrote to him with a packet of the facts surrounding my case, asking for help. About five months later, he wrote back saying that the information sounded serious. However, he had a backlog of about 4,000 cases… that was the bad news. The good news was they were going to open up a private Innocence Project at Cooley Law School in Lansing. I was their first case and they got me out. [45:20] MM: You told me before we started filming today that you were the second person in Michigan and the 129th person in the country to be granted a DNA release? [45:34] KW: In Michigan, we're up to 130, but nationwide, as of last Friday, we’re up to 2,755. It’s still just the tip of the iceberg, and that’s why I’m proud to be part of Proving Innocence with Bill Proctor. There’s no more worthy cause in the world. [46:05] MM: We're hearing about people getting out every week, which is an amazing, amazing thing. I want to turn to Bill Proctor now, who was kind enough to come on Open Mike Episode 51. Bill works tirelessly for wrongfully convicted people. He's a member of the Michigan Broadcasters Hall of Fame, and the founder of Proving Innocence. Today he runs Seeking Justice, currently on the trail of Who Killed Shannon Siders, which is an amazing website… Bill, thank you for coming to the show today. Tell me how you got involved fighting for the wrongfully convicted. [47:00] Bill Proctor: I was lucky enough to have an almost 40-year career in television and was a reporter, anchor. But had a private investigator in 1994 bring me a case out of Port Huron. This was a strange situation where a college student was murdered in broad daylight on a community college in 1986. Well, lots of twists and turns brought the police to a fella named Frederick Thomas Freeman. And Mr. Freeman had the misfortune of dating, for maybe two weeks, the girlfriend/fiancé of the murder victim. While the police looked at his general level of misconduct, that never indicated something so serious as to felony level. He wrote a couple of bad checks, drove a motorcycle without a license, those kinds of silly things. But he was just kind of an arrogant tough guy who thought he was God's gift to women. Bottom line is they put together a case that to this day is the most ridiculous presentation you've ever seen in your life that essentially convicted an innocent man. That was in 1986, for the trial. I took on the case 1994- 95 and was among the first reporters in the state of Michigan to essentially step out in a big way to present an actual innocence claim. The claim was extremely strong with a jailhouse snitch who got rewarded to make statements about what he heard in a jail cell that Freeman allegedly said girls who claimed that he was some sort of ninja master who could levitate himself from one another room to another that kind of thing, throwing stars all this kind of stuff. And the real bottom line was, this was a shot gun murder in broad daylight on the college campus. Freeman, with all of his martial arts prowess, could have snapped this neck quietly and walked away with no problem. That didn't happen. This, we strongly believe today, had to do with drugs, mayoral connection to drug dealers, corruption, and bad actors. What I learned from that case, from a private investigator, is that there are so many elements of a trial that can misrepresent the truth… [50:36] MM: And this person is still sitting in prison today, right? [51:10] BP: The list that you've heard from your guests, the list of the tens of thousands of cases that have been examined by a number of innocence projects around the country, have come down to a very comprehensive, constant evaluation of the problem of wrongful conviction in America. Six, seven, maybe eight specific reasons for all of them…. The list is long. It's difficult, Michael, and yes, the entire country needs to know that this is more than a notion more than a TV show. More than a television series. These are people whose lives and the lives of their families are ruined by bad work in the criminal justice system. [54:03] MM: And from all accounts. Bill, you are helping so many people you're working as a private investigator trying to get people out. I know what good work you do. I've seen it. The new the new case that you're working on is very compelling. Do you want to tell a little bit about that and direct people to that website so they can so we can let the world know what's happening? [58:03] KW: Bill was talking about eyewitness misidentification being a leading cause. It is the leading cause of wrongful convictions. And if you look at the facts, amongst the exonerees, all of us are throughout the country, the eyewitness identification has been proven wrong 78% of the time. 78%. That's scary numbers. [58:56] Mike, Aaron, Julie, Kenny, spend time comparing multiple identical factors that contributed to their wrongful convictions: poor defense attorneys, aggressive prosecuting attorneys, tunnel vision, eyewitness errors, bad forensic science, perjury, and official misconduct. [1:01:18] MM: We’ve done six or seven wrongful exonerees interviews. And the thing that amazes me is the perception of how bitter you all should be. But you have found the spirit to work hard and help others who are left behind in these exact situations. You've started nonprofits, you've been vocal about injustice, you lecture, you help pass laws. So, I want you to all tell me why? Why do you feel the way do you do? How do you keep a positive attitude? And why are you trying to help others? [1:04:54] MM: A key to the future in this fight for justice is awareness, education, breaking down the stigma associated with being an exoneree. Tell me about how your family, friends, and even strangers treated you after you got released from prison. [1:08:04] MM: Bill, I want to ask you — how do we keep the pressure up on those in the justice system to prioritize freeing innocent people over putting people away? [1:08:23] BP: At this stage in the country, we have a serious problem. Because at one point, you might be able to get everyone elected to a legislature to sit around a table, listen to suggestions, and walk down a road of some reasonable compromise. I'm sorry, Mike, I don't think it's going to happen now. I think the lunatic in the White House for four years, his year before, and his continued effect on this population means that not enough people of reason, open mind, and open hearts will sit at a table and make changes in laws. I just need to remind everybody that what happens in the criminal justice system is essentially a wonderfully written set of laws and rules and processes and procedures. But we forget that people administer those laws. People have human failures. People do things that they're not supposed to do under law, or even in ethical or moral practice. I really don't know where we start, Mike. But everybody should know that. Yes. Not only do wrongful convictions happen, but they can be prevented. And yes, if somebody is telling you and insisting from the very beginning at trial or charges that they didn't do it, every single friend that's possible needs to step up and listen and try to help before the conviction takes place. [1:09:50] MM: You would think that all of the news that's being made about wrongful convictions, and the integrity units, and podcasts like this with 3 million eyeballs on them… that people will start getting the message…. My hope is that if there are people out there who have said things to police that aren't true, that they will come forward and say, “You know what, I might have made a mistake.” And I know that takes courage. And I encourage people to gather that courage because you have beautiful souls who are sitting in prison for crimes they didn't commit. Thousands of people around this country that need the truth to be told. And I want to thank you all again, for being here. I want to thank you for sharing your stories, because I know it's not easy. And I want to tell the three of you that after hearing your stories, and learning from Bill, and watching the movies and reading your books, that the Mike Morse Law Firm has decided to put — lack of a better word — our money where our mouth is, our energy where our mouth is. And we have taken on a case of a man that, I believe, did not get a fair trial on a Shaken Baby Syndrome case. A man who's sitting in prison for life and did not get a fair trial. He had a terrible defense attorney, there was not one expert witness called against eight expert witnesses by the state. And I am working hard with a team of lawyers here at the Mike Morse Law Firm to get this man a new trial. This is probably one of the hardest things that my firm has ever done. I am doing it because of you three. You have encouraged me. Throughout it, Bill, you have helped me, and we've had several conversations about taking cases like this. And because this man did not have the quality attorney that he should have, we are going to fight as hard as we know how to get this man a new trial. We will share more details in the coming months. We are in the midst of it right now, getting the evidence, talking to experts, putting together a brief… I'm nervous about it. You get one shot at a 6500 motion, as you guys all know. And I'm hopeful. I'm hopeful. And I just wanted you guys to hear it first. [1:13:07] KW: Mike, God bless you. I wish that there were more attorneys like you that take the time to help when you see something wrong. You try to right it. I think that's what all of us do. And the bottom line is — all anybody ever wants when it comes to the justice system is the truth. So, I take my hat off to you. I commend you. May God bless you. [1:13:28] AS: Mike. I just want to say one thing, man. I really respect you for doing that. Because when I was in prison, the only thing I wanted was for somebody to pick up my case and help me. So that's real commendable, man. And it's a lot of work, but I know you can do it. [1:13:50] MM: You know what, Aaron, it wouldn't happen had you not come on my show. Or had you guys not introduced me to Dave Moran up at the Innocence Clinic. So, lots of things happen and wouldn't happen if Kevin Dietz, my good friend, didn't suggest we do these episodes on Open Mike. You know, I feel emotional about it. I'm excited about it. I'm nervous about it. I can't believe that we've done 100 episodes! We have gifts for you all that we're going to give you as well. And thanks again for being here.
Would you like to become great? Serve. We blow over things like this. But Mike challenges us to listen to God through prayer and the do whatever God tells us as long as it lines up with scripture. Is there a better way to spend your life? Don't you feel your flesh and your circumstances rising up in rebellion. "What if God tells me to use a bunch of my time or my money to do something? I'm too busy!" When we fail to obey, we miss out. Can you trust God for more today? Can you serve more than you think? Can you carefully devise a way to serve someone at work and ask God to help make it happen? Everything we have, time, money and experiences, all come from God. He will use them. He will inform us and teach us and use us if we will let him. We need other Christians speaking into our lives, but especially those who challenge us to be more like Jesus. And Jesus gave his life for people who would kill him. Today, let's ask God how we can serve those around us and then, do it!!! Make a way. As Mike says, solve for how? Don't ask why or begin making excuses. Make it happen. And if you do, please share a note or send an email to Mike@followerofone.org and let us know how it went. We're grateful for your service to our King! Don't forget to check out the Marketplace Mission Trip, too. We have another one starting in just a couple of weeks. Mike Bausch finds that there are things that still translate from Day One of his business, Andolini's Pizzeria, based in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I brought Mike on to the show to understand his approach to growing a restaurant business through his very authentic manner – and how he makes such delicious pizzas. Mike started the pizzeria with his brother at the age of 22 – 6 months after graduating from college. 15 years later, it’s the leading pizzeria that’s turned into a true success during the pandemic. So much so, they’ve been able to run at full capacity. Mike’s enthusiasm is infectious. Tune in as we talk about getting mentors, POS system failures, key questions to ask yourself as an entrepreneur, and the art of not fitting in. As Mike says in the interview, “there’s always a better way”, so let’s keep on learning as business leaders. Dan and Mike are mad as hell that more people aren't talking about Network, Sidney Lumet's 1976 masterpiece. In their discussion of a film so perfect and prophetic, the guys discuss how we all live in the world that Network creates on our screens and that Howard Beale describes and decries. As Mike says, if you get the jokes of Network, you're acknowledging that all is lost. Dan tries a new method for selecting his favorite moment and Mike compares Howard Beale to the prophet Jeremiah. Our troubles run even deeper than TV, the internet, or social media. So throw open your window, lean out, and yell, "I'm a film fanatic and I'm not going to take it any more!" Today I’m joined by Mike Meyer who serves as Head of Global Sales and Trading at Seaport Global. While the two of us touch upon business, however, the focus of our conversation today is on Mike’s passion project, a documentary called (In)Visible Portraits that is dedicated to celebrating American black women in the past and present while looking with hope towards the future. Mike shares with listeners his inspiration for the project, how it came to be made, and the impact he hopes it will have on its audience. Mike describes (In)Visible Portraits as a “love-letter to black women,” explaining that the idea for the project came to him after watching Isiah Thomas’s Hall of Fame induction speech, where he became overwhelmed with emotion as he addressed his mother and talked about the incredible influence she had on his life. Watching Thomas’s speech stuck with Mike, and he realized that women like Mary Thomas are some of the most important Americans who get up and face challenges every day but never receive the recognition they deserve. Because of this, Mike’s project began as a celebration of black mothers. While (In)Visible Portraits was first released on Juneteenth 2020, Mike explains that the project took over ten years to come into fruition. He talks about the difficulty of finding a director for the film until a mutual friend introduced him to filmmaker Oge Egbuonu, who took on the project. While the film wasn’t set to be released until later in 2020, the team decided it best to release it on Juneteenth after the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor brought revived awareness to the racial tensions and injustices still alive in the United States. As Mike shares, his hope for the film is that it will bring both emotion and an awareness to its audience that will then make its way through society. He hopes for the film to one day become a part of the education system and taught at all levels. Listen in to learn more about Mike’s influences, his next initiative for fighting against racial inequality, and the film’s development, and be sure to tune in on March 2 at 9 p.m. ET/PT as (In)Visible Portraits premieres on the Oprah Winfrey Network. What You’ll Learn in This Podcast Episode: On today’s episode, you’ll learn about (In)Visible Portraits, a documentary dedicated to celebrating American black women in the past and present while looking with hope towards the future. In addition to learning about the documentary itself, you’ll also learn from executive producer Mike Meyer about what inspired the film and how it got made. Mike Fruge, founder and owner of JT Meleck Distillers, joined Discover Lafayette to discuss the evolution of his family's farming business and what led him to create award-winning vodka from rice. Mike has a great story to tell, one which not only captures the tenacity of our Louisiana farmers but also one of an entrepreneurial spirit that has led him to continue to evolve his farming operations to eke out all he can from the land. In this podcast, we celebrate that precious food commodity which our South Louisiana culture revolves around: rice. We also celebrate the tenacity of our Louisiana farmers which is exemplified by our guest. Mike Fruge is a rice and crawfish farmer along with his brother, Mark, and he descends from a long line of rice farmers in Acadia Parish. He grew up in Branch, LA on the family rice farm founded by his great, great uncle, John “JT” Meleck, who started growing “Providence Style” rice in 1896. John Meleck originally migrated to Louisiana from the Midwest right after the Civil War years in search of cheap land. It took the family two years to complete the trek to Louisiana by covered wagons. After learning the hard way that corn and other commodities didn't grow in Louisiana as well as they had in the Midwest, Meleck started growing what was called "Providence style rice:" the rice was planted on low-lying bottomland which depended on Mother Nature to provide the rainwater which would seep down from the higher ground to nourish the crop. Meleck's rice farm joined many other rice industry operations which took off around the turn of the 20th century. Pictured is John Meleck, Mike Fruge's great, great uncle, driving the vehicle along with Mike’s grandfather, the little boy in the back. John Meleck is the inspiration behind the name of Fruge's JT Meleck Distillers. Fast forward to the 1980s, when Mike and his brother, Mark, were among the first to enter the aquaculture industry. At that time, most crawfishing was considered a hobby and there weren't many commercial crawfish farms. Fruge Farms was one of the first to convert to 100% crawfish farming as a way to make a living while preventing their rice fields from being depleted. As Mike says, "We weren't the first, but we were pioneers." The terrain of Southwest Louisiana provides ideal growing conditions as the production requires flatlands that can be easily flooded and now almost all rice farmers are also crawfishermen. Today, Fruge Aquafarms is a thriving rice and crawfish farm that has grown to roughly 4000 acres. With the initial growth of his aquaculture endeavor, Mike looked for a market and took to the road in his pickup to find buyers. He began selling his crawfish product in Dallas in 1989 and had to educate the market on how to prepare the crawfish with which they were unfamiliar. "My timing was a little early!" he said. Today that pickup truck in which he personally delivered crawfish has grown into Dallas-based Fruge Seafood Co. which is a regional wholesale distributor of fine seafood in Louisiana, Texas, and Oklahoma. Its #1 top seller is salmon and the company specializes in upscale fish choices for fine dining experiences. Mike is a conservative businessman who learned through the school of hard knocks how to stay profitable, without going to outside investors, while keeping this family business afloat. "Coming of age in the oilfield in the 1980s, I can't describe how bad things were. 20% of the population literally left the area. I never wanted to borrow money unless it was absolutely necessary. We've been very conservative and our risks were calculated." Fruge Seafood has grown into a Dallas-Based regional wholesale distributor of fine seafood in Louisiana, Texas, and Oklahoma. Its #1 top seller is salmon and the company specializes in upscale fish choices for fine dining experiences. About 10 to 15 years ago, Mike started wondering how his fourth-generation farming business was going to look like m...
Mike Michalowicz, author of business books tells Geordie about his entrepreneurship journey, losing money, battling depression, and finally discovering his purpose. Mike Michalowicz is an author of business-based books for small business owners and entrepreneurs. His books help entrepreneurs fix sales, accounting, and operations. He talks to Geordie about Fix this Next and his latest book. What You’ll Learn What is the one thing about Mike that he has never written about? Why you should appoint an excellent team to run and manage your businesses What significant challenge do nearly all entrepreneurs face? What analogy does Mike use? Mike’s hierarchy of business needs and how it works Who does Mike approach while doing his research? Problems entrepreneurs are facing that Mike comes across during his research. Why businesses should understand each employee’s dreams and desires How does Mike define legacy? In this Episode: Mike says he has been an entrepreneur since his college days, during which he has built various tech businesses and sold them. His third business, as an angel investor, was the most relevant even though it resulted in a challenging phase. Listen to the podcast to find out how that disastrous experience turned out to become a restart for him. As Mike went through difficult times, he thought about how little he understood entrepreneurship. He made up his mind to spend the rest of his life exploring entrepreneurship to determine what works for him and what does not. Mike wrote everything he learned and ended up becoming an author. He tells Geordie that he is focused on finding simple and effective solutions for the various entrepreneur challenges. According to Mike, many entrepreneurs struggle to make profits. Clockwork, his book was inspired by the fact that while many entrepreneurs seek personal freedom, they are always working endlessly. Mike says he also struggles with these challenges. Often, he makes a hypothesis of the challenge and indicates potential solutions. Writing books is not an easy task, and this is evident from Mike’s sentiments that some books can take him up to 10 years to complete. However, he says some are easier and fast to write. Mike considers himself a curator instead of an authority. Find out why from the podcast. While he owns various businesses, Mike says he does not run or manage them actively. He appreciates that he has a great team who assist him in daily operations. Writing a book makes you accountable, and the content becomes your accountability component. You have to live by what you preach, and Mike says every system he created was suitable to his businesses. Many entrepreneurs have the urge to grow but are unable to do it. Listen to the podcast to hear what Mike has to say about this phenomenon. He explains an analogy that he uses, which you can learn from the podcast. Mike talks about why many entrepreneurs attempt to fix links in their businesses with no notable results. Many times, entrepreneurs fix links randomly within their business chain and end up breaking the weakest areas. Fix this next, Mike says, is an excellent tool that helps entrepreneurs identify weak links in their businesses. He gives more details about this approach that all entrepreneurs need to listen to from the podcast. Research is crucial when it comes to writing books. Mike talks about how he conducts his research and the people he targets. Do not miss this comprehensive part of the podcast. Mike perceives his business to be the platform of expression. He says the critical job of an entrepreneur is to create jobs. Their job is to envision where they want the business to be, and aligning the vision with how it helps them get colleagues to move in the same direction. He discusses more details in the podcast. In the quest to penetrate the market, some entrepreneurs give out free things until their businesses start making losses. Mike mentions that this is a mistake that entrepreneurs should avoid making. He narrates the story of how an entrepreneur ventured into entrepreneurship in the city of Guatemala. While a high percentage of the population is poverty-stricken, the entrepreneur managed to sell his wares for a profit. Mike does not discourage giving, but he believes there are various ways of giving. He mentions that the problem happens when entrepreneurs give until they compromise their businesses. He narrates another story about a small town in New Jersey. Listen in and learn from the story. He concludes by telling us the title of his next book. Listen to the podcast to figure out the book title and its contents. Resources Mikemichalowicz.com Mike Michalowicz LinkedIn Mike Michalowicz Twitter

God tells Jeremiah, "I AM. Is anything too difficult for me?" I need to memorize this verse. Jeremiah is in prison. The 2nd siege of Jerusalem is at hand. Babylon is about to wipe way the Jews, but not really. In fact God just had Jeremiah buy some land! Let that sink in. Jeremiah is in prison! The city is under siege. Nations disappeared back in this time. During their lives, they had seen other nations get absorbed by a conquering nation and the name and the people were gone. But God tells Jeremiah to buy some land. What does this tell you today? Because of who you are and who you belong to, you can step into any problem. Let's let God move us into an area where our actions seem extreme but God gets the glory. Is it too difficult for God to give you the time to practice being a missionary in your workplace? Why not join us on the next Marketplace Mission Trip. You will invest a few minutes every morning and evening for 2 weeks to trust God with your actions and your work life. Casey Hoyt and Michael Moore, founders of VieMed Healthcare, Inc., the largest independent non-invasive ventilation therapy provider in the U S., joined Jan Swift of Discover Lafayette to discuss their journey. They were joined by Casey's dad, Max Hoyt, who has been a mentor, investor, and V. P. of Governmental Relations for VieMed until recently. They shared their journey in building a highly successful organization based upon mutual respect of their partner's talents as well as having each other's back at all times. Close friends since their college years, they met through their mutual friend, the late Brad Dunphy. Even while hanging out in college, Casey and Mike always enjoyed talking business. Casey learned at an early age how to work with others and for others, having grown up under the tutelage of his dad, Max Hoyt, who had started several businesses of his own, most notably Pixus Digital Printing. Starting in the work force at 15 years of age at Hub City Diner, Casey was always working and gained invaluable experience in the sales field selling alarms for ADT and "learned how to get 25 'No's' for each 'Yes'." He had found success running NimLock Louisiana (now VOXX), an exhibit and trade show service company. Michael Moore had gotten into respiratory therapy sales at the age of 17. He found he enjoyed working with patients and loved the fundamental of sales. He had worked for a mom and pop durable medical equipment business and had built strong relationships in the healthcare industry and with local physicians. By 2006, both Casey and Mike were ready for a new challenge and knew they could effectively combine their skills in business management (Casey) and sales (Mike.) Wanting to keep respiratory medicine front and center, the resulting endeavor was a new company, Sleep Management, which originally provided CPAPs for physicians' sleep labs. A change in Medicare rules in 2008 allowed for home-based sleep apnea testing, and they first worked to get physician-run sleep labs to opt in to this new at-home treatment for patients. As Mike says, "It really failed!" So they took a leap of faith and opened their own sleep apnea testing company called "Home Sleep Delivery," the first of its kind in Louisiana and only one of five in the country at the time. Payers weren't even covering the procedure at that time, but they knew it was just a matter of time before the home sleep treatment industry would be transformed and become mainstream. As Casey says, "Mike was always a good salesperson. We had a tiger by the tail the minute we turned on the light switch." Test devices are mailed to patients and then mailed back to Home Sleep Delivery; thereafter therapy for the patient is delivered via mail and the device set up by video call with assistance from the company. That business has continued to grow and Casey and Mike look back on that early home therapy option as a precursor of how people are now successfully operating remotely during COVID times. Casey and Mike have stayed focus on respiratory issues as their business has grown and branched out. While most people locally still look upon their business as focused on sleep apnea testing and treatment, that market is actually only 5% of their revenue. Yet, that sleep market is what led them into treating sick patients with lung disease. VieMed provides equipment and home-based healthcare to serve patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and other respiratory issues. It was in 2012 that they entered the non-invasive ventilator (NIV) therapy arm of their business as a distributor when Philips brought this life-changing device onto the market. In 2014, they rebranded to "VieMed" to more accurately reflect their business mission. "The non-invasive therapy market was" ripe for the picking" and demand was sky-high. VieMed is based in Lafayette LA and employs 505 full-time employees across the country,
BSS Podcast Ep. 63 – Increase in popularity = Increase in haters The boys are back this week talking about how some “Haterade” has been coming both of their ways recently. The more that people know you, the more people may not like you and that’s okay. Ryan and Mike both take turns sharing examples of how an uptick in social presence, growth and popularity can also bring the people who just want to go against the grain of what you say. The more that people know you, the more people may not like you and that’s okay. As Mike says, if you’re going to be for everybody, you’re not going to be for anybody. So, niching down will come with some effects of people that don’t agree with you. Ryan shares his experience of having a Canon R5 camera that he’s used forever until recently. He purchased and switched over to a Sony camera and then made a 3-minute video on why it works better for himself and business. Sounds harmless right? However, tech heads beware as this video has over 900+ views as the controversy, engagement and comments have been made over which camera is better. To Ryan’s point, he does not care but simply is enjoying how the algorithm is picking this up and putting him higher on the viewing charts. Mike shares his story about a single individual who received an accidental (non-soliciting) email, triggered a flow of hate and bad reviews by this person onto Mike’s business. Ultimately in the end, after Mike provided facts of how the accident occurred, the individual agreed to take his review down, which could have had a negative impact on future/potential clients. In business if you take the emotion out of it and stick to the facts, it’s the best way to navigate a sticky situation. They close it up both agreeing that the recovery paradox, time, effort and energy into haters ultimately is not worth your brain power. Engage to keep it professional and respectful but don’t dwell on a negative comment from one person willing to troll you from a single post/video. The Keys to Scaling a Business the Right Way What You Will Learn: How mistakenly saving over an invoice led Mike to design the accounting software his business needed, leading to the birth of FreshBooks How the company that started with six team members in his parents’ basement now has millions of users in more than 160 countries Why Mike was reluctant to raise outside capital and instead self-funded the business for a long time Why Mike believes that accepting venture capital during the early days could have undermined the value of the business What important lessons on scaling a business Mike learned growing FreshBooks from just six employees to more than 400 What key organizational growth breakpoints Mike identified on the journey, and how the company had to adapt to each new breakpoint Why having shared values and alignment within your organization is the key to success, and why every problem in business is ultimately a people problem How Mike addresses the difficult situation of a team member not being in alignment with their role in the company Why Mike has chosen to dedicate time to his thought leadership efforts, and why he considers it to be “soul food for entrepreneurs” Why shifting from time-and materials-based billing to value-based billing can be a powerful game-changer for your business The Keys to Scaling a Business the Right Way William S. Burroughs famously said, “When you stop growing, you start dying.” We all want our businesses to keep growing, but sometimes we hit obstacles and roadblocks during the scaling process — and the solutions we used to get us where we are often don’t work to get us where we want to be. In this episode of Onward Nation, FreshBooks CEO and co-founder Mike McDerment shares how his business, which started out with six team members in his parents’ basement, has grown to millions of users in over 160 different countries. And — he shares key lessons on scaling a business he learned during that remarkable growth journey — lessons that can help you fuel the growth of your own business. Bootstrapping Rapid Growth Mike created the software that would become FreshBooks after growing frustrated when he accidentally saved over a past billing invoice. That’s when he decided to create a better tool for small business accounting. The tool proved successful — and Mike’s focus shifted to this new business opportunity. One of the important decisions Mike made early in the life of FreshBooks was to walk away from venture capital funding. At the time, Mike was concerned that the need to offer a return on investment could stunt progress in scaling a business — and so for years, FreshBooks was self-funded. Ultimately, this put the company into a great position now that it is in the pre-IPO stage because it allowed FreshBooks to remain more nimble without being beholden to outside investors during its critical growth period. While Mike believes venture capital isn’t always a bad idea, it wasn’t the right choice for FreshBooks. Scaling a Business Takes Alignment and Shared Values During FreshBooks’ remarkable period of growth, the company reached several key milestones and breakpoints. Each time, Mike and the team had to adapt to change and learn new, critical skills directly tied to scaling a business. For example, early on everyone reported directly to Mike — but eventually, the team grew enough that managers needed to be added. As Mike said during his interview, it was important to identify when these breakpoints happened and to adapt the business to continue scaling through them. And it is an ongoing process — as the business grows, the things needed to keep it moving change. Ensuring that everyone is aligned with your mission and values is critical, and if a team member isn’t in alignment with their role, it is important to address the situation honestly and clearly. As Mike said, every business problem is a people problem at its heart. Getting the right people in the right seats can help you overcome any obstacle. About Mike McDerment Mike McDerment is the co-founder and CEO of FreshBooks, the world’s #1 cloud accounting software for self-employed professionals. Bible Reading: Proverbs 2:1-9For what seemed like the fiftieth time, Mike twirled the dial on his locker and silently prayed it would work. He glanced around nervously, hoping nobody noticed how long he'd been trying to get the locker open. This is a lousy way to start middle school, he thought, his stomach tightening into an anxious knot. He sighed and tried the numbers again, but nothing happened. In frustration, he tugged the handle harder. He was startled when someone behind him spoke."What's wrong, Mike?" It was Spencer, a friend who was a grade ahead of him.Mike leaned against the locker. "This thing won't open.""Let me try," offered Spencer. As Mike told him the numbers, Spencer flipped the dial this way and that. When he pulled on the handle, the door opened!"How'd you do that?" Mike was astonished. "It wouldn't work for me!""Try it again, and I'll watch you," said Spencer. So Mike began turning the knob. "Whoa," said Spencer. "You have to go past that number and stop at it on the second time around." Spencer took the knob and demonstrated for Mike."Oh, right!" Mike shook his head. "I forgot about that."Spencer laughed. "It's just like Pastor Burt said last Sunday. Remember?""You meanin church?" Mike asked.Spencer nodded. "You memorized your locker combination, but those numbers didn't do you any good because you didn't know how to use them. And memorizing Bible verses doesn't do us any good either if we don't use them. Just being able to recite a verse isn't enough--we need to know what it means and apply it to our lives."Mike tried the lock one more time, and it opened right away. "All right! Thanks, Spencer!" he said. "And thanks for the reminder about Bible verses too," he added as he took out his book for his first class. "I know just the one I need to apply to my life right now." Spencer gave him a thumbs-up, and Mike took a deep breath as he walked toward his classroom. "Be strong and courageous," he recited under his breath. "Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." Kelly M. SchaeferHow About You?Do you understand the meaning of Bible verses you have learned?
