Growing up, Rachel's father would teach her through telling stories rather than just making statements. This was when she learned first-hand the power stories have to teach lessons, provide escapes, and form connections. Years later, these gifts that storytelling offers to the world would pull her into the entertainment industry. Ever versatile, she loves working behind the camera just as much as in front and firmly believes in helping wherever needed when on set. Because of this, Rachel has expanded her knowledge of the various roles on set and now does work as a filmmaker, such as directing and producing. Some of her favorite adventures in the filmmaking arena have come from a comedy sketch filmmakers' troupe she is a part of called A Dangerous Flock. Rachel's love lies in authentic storytelling, whether in front of the camera or behind it. She says it best, "My favorite thing about filmmaking is that it requires collaboration. #130: God, grace + emotions: Anger is not your enemy with Amber Lia

We're talking about where God's grace meets us in our anger. Anger is one of those dirty, little secrets no good Christian woman wants to talk about. We don't like to admit that we can be so easily swayed into an emotion that triggers behavior that is so incredibly ugly.   And yet… we all get angry. Some of us give full vent to our anger, and some of us stuff it down, so it leaks out in weird ways in unrelated moments. Amber and I talk through The two types of anger Whether it's wrong to get angry And what to do with guilt when you reacted in anger. Key Quotes “God has allowed me to use my emotions to serve me, not enslave me.” - Author Amber Lia “We are to hate evil and sin and everything it stands for.” - Author Amber Lia “If we can start to see triggers as opportunities, instead of something for us to get mad and angry and reactionary about, then it changes everything.” - Author Amber Lia “I got tired of operating in the aftermath of chaos.” - Author Amber Lia “How does God draw us to repentance? Oh, it's with His lovingkindness.” - Author Amber Lia “Conviction that is loving will catapult us toward love.” - Author Amber Lia“If you're just stuffing them down, you're not allowing your emotions to serve you. Those emotions are still enslaving you.” - Author Amber Lia “Whatever our emotions are, there should be a healthy outlet for them.” - Author Amber Lia “We have to become advocates for our own lives and our own emotional health and well-being.” - Author Amber Lia “Anger is not your enemy, but you need to direct it toward your enemy.” - Author Amber Lia “Don't heap shame on yourself if you struggle with anger.” - Author Amber Lia As Mentioned in the Podcast The FCC requires that I tell you that I'm an Amazon Affiliate, which means I earn a bit of commission on each sale. Sherrie Clark is the founder and CEO of Storehouse Media Group as well as a best-selling and award-winning author, ghostwriter, author coach, editor, publisher, and book marketer. She uses her 17 years of acquired skills, accomplishments, and experiences to raise up best-selling and award-winning authors, many of whom are entrepreneurs and leaders. To date, she has worked on over 160 books, noting the common struggles many authors share, especially new ones. Her online courses were created to show them how to address those challenges before they arise so they can achieve success with writing a book. So whether she's coaching authors one-on-one, in groups, or through her online courses, she's passionate about ensuring they create a book they're proud to have their name on. Over the years, Sherrie has been dubbed the “Page-Turner Queen” because of her ability to communicate through storytelling and skillfully pull stories and messages out of people. She then masterfully crafts them in a way that not only breathes life into them but also gives her clients credibility and value so that they can become the go-to expert in their profession. As a national speaker, she enjoys sharing her love for storytelling and how it can change lives, even cultures. She learned how to tell a good story as a police officer with the NYPD and has honed this skill ever since through content writing, copywriting, and books. Sherrie has enjoyed every role and phase of her life. She feels each one has contributed to where she's at now, doing what she's most passionate about, and fulfilling the adage, “Do what you love to do, and you'll never work a day in your life.” “be methodical in starting and building your business. There is a saying that says don't quit your day job and to me that means that if you are wanting to build a business do it on the side, keep working your job - the job that is providing for you and your family. Because in reality building a business and realising that kind of income it can sometimes take some time and if you replace it with your job you may find yourself and your family in a bad place without that financial support - and it could become really hard on the family as well. And to make matters worse you will become desperate ”…[Listen for More] Click Here for Show Notes To Listen or to Get the Show Notes go to https://wp.me/p6Tf4b-neg

Mom anger is something few of us want to admit, but most of us face.  The behaviors of our children that trigger our anger must be dealt with, but we cannot sin in the process of correcting them.  Today’s guest, Amber Lia, and Lee sit down to discuss confronting and confessing our mommy anger, and steps we must take to be spirit-controlled in our discipline. Relationships are hard. Amber + Guy Lia, owners of faith-and family-friendly production company Storehouse Media Group, join us to share practical advice on some of the most common issues that trigger friction in partnerships. Married for 14 years, Amber + Guy are proof that a typical couple can break the reactionary cycle of outbursts and embrace the opportunity for growth as individuals and as a couple. Whether it's poor communication, busy schedules, different parenting styles, or another culprit, this husband-wife team offers easy-to-apply advice to counter adverse reactions to these triggers.  Today's conversation will offer hope that anger + frustration can shift into peace + joy -- and it's not as hard as you think! SHOW NOTES: Find a rhythm that works for you. To balance writing with raising their four children, Guy + Amber carved dedicated time to work together by waking up at 2 a.m. Although Amber's first childhood memories were positive, she recalls dark periods which she attributes to her parents being raised in a strict separatist cult. “In the midst of all the conflict, my parents were incredibly devoted and exceedingly generous.” Guy’s parents were in a car accident when he was a child, causing conflicts in their relationship. After a massive heart attack, his parents learned a new way to love each other and present a better model of parenting. "I thought I was getting Prince Charming and he thought he was getting Princess Perfect and we were both falling short of that idea." From marriage to parenting within three months: Not having an opportunity to solidify the foundation of their friendship and marriage relationship caused stumbling blocks early in their marriage. Having been around kids her entire life, Amber did not expect the internal identity crisis she faced. Triggers will always be there. Stop reacting in anger and frustration, and start responding in more gentle, Biblical responses. When you're no longer friends... To rediscover why she fell in love with Guy, Amber wrote down one thing that she appreciated and valued about him.  When you're weary and exhausted... being involved in their community eases the burdens Amber + Guy carries. When your marriage ebbs and flows... commit to "check-ups" with your significant other once or twice a month to openly communicate needs and problems. "Being proactive in our marriages prevents us from being reactive in our marriages." "Making our spouses happy is not our job but should be our delight." "Some of our biggest marriage triggers don't result from what we do but from what we neglect to do." "There is nothing anger can do that love can't do better" Get a copy of Amber and Guy Lia's book Marriage Triggers here. Amber reminds us that our legacy can change with different seasons, as well as the surprising twists and turns of life, but one thing remains constant: the more we act like Jesus, the better our legacy will be. We can ask ourselves each morning: "What does the Lord want from me today?" How we treat just one person, in kindness and love, not surrendering to the normal "triggers" that are our natural bent, is how we show the love and grace of Christ on a daily basis.Get this book for yourself and for a friend: Marriage Triggers: Exchanging Spouses' Angry Reactions for Gentle Biblical Responses Release date 1/28/20http://bit.ly/MarriageTriggersBookPreorderA former high school English teacher, Amber is a work-at-home mom of four little boys ranging from 3 to 13. Welcome to the Simply Joyful PodcastEpisode #010 with Amber   Biblical Solutions for Mommy AngerShow Notes: KristiClover.com/010   Let’s be honest. Mommy anger is a real struggle for so many of us. I didn’t know I was capable of being so frustrated and angry until I had kids. My buttons get pushed, I’m sleep deprived, and exhausted…and the angry comes.    There have been times when I can feel it coming and try to fight it, but I end up snapping at my kids anyway. Other times it sneaks up on me and comes out when I’m not expecting it.    I’m a firm believer in the fact that God uses our kids to refine us. I may not have known that I’d struggle with anger, but God did. He’s not surprised by my sin…not one bit. I will be a work-in-progress until the day He calls me home. He just keeps offering me His grace, forgiveness, and His self control.    I actually wrote about my struggle with anger in my post called Finding Joy When You’re Angry. I hope you’ll check it out. I think you’ll really like the five tips I have in there for finding joy when you feel like getting angry. I’m not a perfect mom, but I am trying to be the best mom I can be. And I’m really trying to learn how to respond in more loving ways when my kids trigger my anger.   Speaking of “triggers,” my guest today is none other than my sweet friend, Amber Lia. Amber is the co-author of the book Triggers: Parents' Angry Reactions for Gentle Biblical Responses. She wrote Triggers along side Wendy Speake as Wendy and I mentioned in Episode #008. Amber is married to her husband Guy, who by the way went to Steve and my alma mater. They’ve been married for ten years and have four boys. She and Guy Guy work as a team in both their work as co-producers (they own a production company called Storehouse Media Group) and in their family life!   Amber and I first met at Bloggers Night Out at the CHEA homeschool convention a couple of years ago. We were both on the panel for the event. (Now I actually organize the event…so come if you are CA in July come on out!)   On a “Simply” & “Joyful” side note…   I asked Amber about what she does to simplify her life and she has a great response! She gives several quick ideas to truly save time. I know you are going to like them!   ** Go to: https://kristiclover.com/freedownload to get a 30 day free trial of Audible — complete with a credit for a free audiobook download. **   In This Episode In this episode, Amber and I are going to get real and share about how mommy anger has affect our lives. Amber has some incredible tips for how to manage mommy anger and where it comes from.  I just know you are going to be so incredibly encouraged in this episode with Amber!   Highlights from This Show… Amber and I talk about her new book, Triggers: Parents' Angry Reactions for Gentle Biblical Responses, which she co-authored with Wendy Speake. This incredible book about mommy anger was compiled from their time working with their online ministry called No More Angry MOB (Moms of Boys).   Mommy anger is a real thing! Amber thought that is was only her "real thing." Then she learned that she wasn't alone.   Triggers chronicles her journey through learning how to turn to God with her anger. It has given hope and has transformed thousands of families.   Many moms get trapped in the cycle of anger and aren't sure what to do.   The book goes over 31 common triggers that parents have. They divide it into external triggers and internal triggers. Amber Lia shares overarching tips and advice for moms who are struggling with anger.   “It takes a childhood to train a child.” -- Amber Lia   “In a practical sense, do not set your expectations too high for yourself or for your kids. Give them a long, long leash to learn whatever it is you’re trying to teach and train them.” -- Amber Lia   It's easy to feel alone in your struggles with anger...because we don't typically broadcast it when we lose it. It doesn't really look good on our Facebook highlight reel. Ha! However, when Wendy and Amber started this No More Angry MOB Facebook group...they had over 1,000 moms join in the first week.   "There's a lot of people out there who have nowhere to turn, because they are embarrassed and don't want to let people know that they get angry -- and that they don't know what to do about it." -- Amber Lia "If we're not letting people know our weaknesses, then we're missing out on a community that can help us grow toward change." -- Amber Lia   “Guilt defeats, but conviction catapults you toward spiritual growth." -- Amber Lia   Amber and I both talk about the importance of helping your child come up with a solution to the whatever problem they are repeatedly having.   “I want to know my kids. I want to know how they think. I want to know what matters to them, what’s important to them. Each of their personalities is different. Getting their input and getting them to take some ownership for these issues is a loving thing to do.” -- Amber Lia   I ask Amber what it’s like working in the entertainment industry as a Christian. She responds by asking for prayer. So, I wanted to ask you to partner with me in praying for the Lia family. Amber and Guy are in the "thick of it" being that they are in the film industry. Having a Christian, conservation company in Hollywood definitely stirs up spiritual attack. So, please be praying for them as they seek to bless others with great quality content.
