“This is where they have been for millions of years and they deserve a home on the Northern Great Plains.”The great American Prairies were once one of the greatest ecosystems in the world. We have all seen images and heard stories of great herds of bison roaming vast swathes of endless grasslands, but a lot of that landscape is now gone. But all is not lost. Alison Fox from American Prairie Reserve joins Ben Goldsmith to talk about plans to pull off a dramatic restoration project in Montana.Ben Goldsmith is a rewilding enthusiast and activist based in the UK. In this podcast he'll be speaking to the people behind some of the most exciting and dramatic rewilding projects on earth. It's easy to feel gloomy; climate science gets scarier and we lose more and more nature every year. However, the natural world is incredible and there are rays of hope and examples of habitats and wildlife returning and flourishing when it's given a helping hand. This podcast is produced by The Podcast Coach.

In 2001, American Prairie made an appearance in Montana with the goal to stitch together private and public lands in Eastern Montana to create a large grassland reserve. By buying ranches from willing sellers, the group – once known as the Prairie Foundation, American Prairie Foundation, and American Prairie Reserve – has become a lightning rod for criticism, legislation and political divisiveness. This is in part because it has stocked some of its land with bison. Recently, the Bureau of Land Management gave final approval to the group to alter grazing plans on federal lands to accommodate bison, reigniting the long simmering feud. On this week's episode Brett French, outdoors and natural resources reporter the Billings Gazette discusses the contentious history of American Prairie's attempt to create a native grassland prairie inhabited by bison.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

PLEASE--help keep my podcast going.  Will you consider a gift?  Go to: Martin McCormack (buymeacoffee.com)Martin talks about rewilding and how it is starting to gain traction around the world.  The premise is that certain places that have been used by human beings, such as farming, ranching or in one case a bridge, can be returned to a state of wilderness or near wilderness.  The benefits are many, from combating climate change, to providing eco-tourism opportunities, to creating ways of using sustainable wild products, such as fish, deer and bison.  Martin chooses three examples of rewilding in action.  Two of them, the Scottish Rewilding Alliance (which seeks to make Scotland the rewilding capital of the world) and the American Prairie Reserve, are well underway.  The third is highly unusual, The Bison Bridge Project, a first of its kind rewilding program that is worth paying attention to.  All of these places are able to be visited and each have interesting and well-developed websites.  Tune in.Support the show

You can learn more about her podcast and observations from the field by visiting the website HERE.  To learn more about Dr. Grant, from her website which you can access HERE it states: Dr. Rae Wynn-Grant is a wildlife ecologist with an expertise in uncovering how human activity influences carnivore behavior and ecology. In particular, she focuses on the ecological and social drivers of human-carnivore conflict. Her current field system encompasses the central coast of California where she is studying the unique ecology of carnivores in coastal zones, as well as the role of protected areas in connectivity of high quality habitat for large carnivores. Her previous research questions surrounded the ecological drivers of human-carnivore conflict with grizzly bears in the Northern Great Plains, black bears in the Western Great Basin, African lions in rural Kenya and Tanzania, as well as grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. A native Californian, Dr. Wynn-Grant attributes her interest in wildlife and conservation from the television shows she watched as a child. She was introduced to the field of conservation biology as an undergraduate and is unapologetic about her passion for studying charismatic megafauna. Dr. Wynn-Grant serves on the Board of Directors for NatureBridge, where she largely aids the organizations in their equity, inclusion, and diversity strategies. The top of the food chain is an interesting and precarious place to live; while you might be the boss of your local environment, you also depend on the functioning of an entire ecology. About our drink: https://www.highwest.com/products/american-prairie-bourbon.php (American Prairie™ Bourbon) is named after the American Prairie Reserve, a group working to create the largest wildlife reserve in the lower 48 states. High West Distillery is passionate about the American West's natural beauty. That's why we want to raise awareness of one of the most fantastic projects of our time: the American Prairie Reserve in northeastern Montana. This is an amazing effort to assemble the largest wildlife reserve in the lower 48 states. When stepping onto the plains of American Prairie Reserve, it's easy to imagine the landscape as Lewis and Clark and Native Americans saw it, with thundering herds of bison, racing bands of pronghorn antelope and prairie dog towns dotting the horizon. When complete, the Reserve will be approximately 5,000 square miles; larger than Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Grand Teton National Parks combined. Go to americanprairie.org to learn how to visit and support this worthy cause. Capable of running at speeds up to 55 miles per hour, the pronghorn antelope is North America's fastest land mammal and performs the continent's second longest land migration of more than 500 miles. Because of their love of travel, pronghorn require large areas of open and intact grasslands. Moreover, pronghorn populations have decreased 98% since the 1800's due to habitat destruction. American Prairie Reserve helps pronghorn through its ongoing fence removal efforts and by conserving wildlife corridors. Our American Prairie is a carefully crafted blend of straight bourbons at least 2 years old, (see highwest.com for technical details and sourcing.) making a great sipper and thoughtful person's whiskey. Visit the American Prairie Reserve, a conservation project in the heart of Montana that could eventually be home to 10,000 bison. The vision is to stitch together 3.5 million acres of public and private lands to form the largest wildlife park in the lower 48. But some nearby ranchers feel the push to build the APR is pushing them off their land, and they're mounting a resistance. We also try to solve the Great Elk Mystery: why are elk that have been exposed to brucellosis allowed to roam free in Montana, while bison are not?

When Lewis and Clark crossed through Montana, they encountered an extraordinary cornucopia of wildlife. Most of that ecosystem and the animals that once thrived there are gone. But a non-profit wants to bring it all back. Pete Geddes, Managing Director of the American Prairie Reserve talks with EconTalk host Russ Roberts about creating the Serengeti of the Americas--a 3.3 million acre prairie that would allow bison, pronghorn antelope, prairie dogs and their friends to inhabit a Wildlife Reserve in Montana, the size of Connecticut. Geddes discusses the goals of the American Prairie Reserve and how they're using a for-profit company, Wild Sky Beef, to gather support and help from local ranchers for the project.

“We have the potential to use grazing lands and use cattle and livestock to help slow climate change,” according to UC Berkeley professor Whendee Silver. Grasslands are under-represented in land conservation, yet they cover about 40 percent of the Earth’s surface and have a big impact by storing greenhouse gases so they don’t enter the atmosphere. While discussing conservation projects, the speakers turned to the larger problems of overpopulation and consumption. “Our generation and the ones short to follow have to come to terms with the fact that there are other ways of managing human societies, because this one is not sustainable,” said former Patagonia CEO Kristine Tompkins, founder of Conservacion Patagonica. Experts addressed the challenges of land conservation, restoration ecology and growing populations in an era of climate disruption. “We’re working in one of the last four places in the world where these native grasslands remain,” said Pete Geddes, managing director of the American Prairie Reserve. North America's grasslands, once teeming with wildlife, awed and inspired Lewis and Clark, artists George Caitlin and Karl Bodmer, and other early American travelers. Today an extraordinary Montana-based project is described by National Geographic as “one of the most ambitious conservation efforts in American history.” With a goal of reestablishing a wildlife phenomenon of almost unimaginable size, American Prairie Reserve is assembling a wildlife complex the size of Connecticut that is open to the public and is a gift of immeasurable value for the global community and future generations.
