In which, we go back to the era when MS had Do Knees, and wonder if Umar Gul's Bowl-out inspired Digvesh Rathi, who signs off autographs for Travis Head to distribute to eager fans in supermarkets, and for Abhishek Sharma to flaunt after hitting match-winning 100s. In which Shreyas Iyer inspires order to the proceedings, and in which KL Rahul and Krunal Pandya follow in the illustrious footsteps of Anil Kumble, in two entirely different contexts. If nothing in the above paragraph made sense, don't panic - CSK's season is making even lesser sense.
‘Change is the only constant' goes the famous saying. Many of our finest cricketers actually started with one skill but then switched over to another which brought them the glory and fortune they're known for today. Did you know that Rohit Sharma, one of the finest batsmen of our time actually started out with the ball? Or the superb bowler R.Ashwin actually did NOT start with the ball, what made Anil Kumble go from pace bowling to leg spin? Sit back and find out as host Cyrus Broacha lets you in on all this and more.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
England's chances of keeping the series against India alive took a huge blow in Ranchi today, with a dominant display for the hosts. India's openers put on 140 runs for the final 3 wickets, before England collapsed with the bat and were all out for 145. Ravi Ashwin recorded his 35th 5-wicket haul, drawing level with Anil Kumble and reaching the landmark 33 tests quicker than the Indian great. India's openers were then faced with a tricky 8 over period to navigate before the close, as Ben Stokes controversially overlooked James Anderson in favour of his young spinners. India raced to 40-0 at stumps and now need just 152 runs tomorrow. Jon Norman brings you full highlights from another sensational day of test cricket - which was live and exclusive to talkSPORT 2. Another ICC final, another Indian defeat. The stoicism of the Bits and Pieces panel is tested to the limit, but they show up again (unlike India's Test side) for Episode 75, which spans the soap opera that is India selection, Ashwin's omission, Umesh's inclusion, Shardul's protrusion, Kohli-Pujara-Rohit-Gill's enduring irritation, Rahane's resurrection, Head's accumulation, Starc's excretion and the MCC manual's arbitrary catch arbitration. The 2007-08 India-Australia Test series is more famous for the 'Monkeygate' controversy than cricket. It was alleged that Harbhajan Singh teased Andrew Symonds as a monkey. Since it was a racial charge, the teams had a go at each other in the following Test on multiple occasions. India captain Anil Kumble made a shocking remark that only one team played in the spirit of the game. after India lost the Sydney Test. At one point, India was on the verge of abandoning the tour and returning home. But thanks to the mediation from the highest echelons of power, the series continued and India went on to register a memorable victory in Perth. Gaurav Joshi recounts the series and the tensions in India-Australia relations.

Welcome to Episode 120 of Never on the Backfoot Podcast. On the podcast today joining me is Nikhil Samant. He is a Chartered Accountant by profession, running his business in Pune. Like all Indians, he is a huge fan of the game of cricket. His passion and need to be associated with the game culminated in his writing of the book, ‘It Wasn't A Waste of Time - The Story of the Most Important Decade' in Indian Cricket'. This book is his tribute to Indian Cricket and all the players who have had the privilege to wear the Indian cap. The book encapsulates four great men - Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, V.V.S. Laxman and Anil Kumble - led by the enigmatic Sourav Ganguly, accept the challenge to repair the tarnished image of Indian cricket. Will India's new captain bring back the charm and respect to India's first love? Who will take up Ganguly's mantle?” Basically, it is the story of an emotional journey Indian fans underwent in the first decade of the new millennium. It outlines the most important events, matches and series India participated in, and their impact on Indian cricket itself. The book beautifully outlines the important events that India had participated in at that time to regain its charm back. It has glimpses of ICC Champions Trophy 2000, India's tour of England and New Zealand in 2002, ICC World Cup 2003, ICC World Cup 2007 and others, presented as a 'long story short'. Although this book is non-fiction, relying heavily on true facts and statistics, interviews and reports, it still has an element of storytelling and a beautiful coherence that fascinated me. The book is surely recommended to all Cricket lovers and those who love to read about the sport. The author is articulate and the language used is subtle, well-drafted and rich. It depicts how the legends of Indian Cricket opened all the doors of love that were almost shut upon them. The comprehensive interview is a candid and free flowing discussion with Nikhil that has us covering a plethora of topics and you wouldn't want to miss out on this one! The podcast is also available on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Anchor, Overcast and a lot of other platforms and spread the word. And we go even further, into just how Blockchain & NFTs will revolutionize the way creators and audiences interact with mutual reward, while exploitative middle men stare from a distance. Michael Atherton catches up with former team-mate Neil Fairbrother to reflect on England's madcap tour of India in 1993, the story of which will be told in Athers' documentary, Spinwash '93, at 7pm on June 2 on Sky Sports Cricket. Michael and Neil discuss the off-field issues England faced on that trip, their limited success on it, and the camaraderie the players shared, as well as the emergence of India's Anil Kumble and Sachin Tendulkar. Plus, does it frustrate Fairbrother that he only made 10 Test appearances for England - and would he have played more in today's era?
The Jumbo moment: Remembering Anil Kumble's 'perfect 10' 7 फरवरी 1999.

Former Indian cricketer Anil Kumble admitted that the saliva ban is something which players will "find hard to manage". "Based on medical advice, we believe that saliva could be the major contributor to carrying this disease and that`s why we banned the use of saliva. although it`s second nature in cricket. That`s something that players will find hard to manage," ESPN Cricinfo quoted Kumble as saying during a webinar, organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry on Wednesday. Last month, the International Cricket Council`s (ICC) Cricket Committee, chaired by Kumble, had recommended changes to ICC regulations including prohibiting the use of saliva to shine the ball amid the coronavirus pandemic. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/latestnewssuno/support
A move to ban the use of saliva to shine a cricket ball because of the danger of transmitting Covid-19 may force bowlers to relearn or reinvent one of the sport's most prized but troublesome skills. The International Cricket Council's cricket committee, comprising a roll call of former top players, has recommended on medical advice that spit polishing the ball should be prohibited while the coronavirus outbreak persists. Unlike baseball, where the spitball has long been illegal, some methods in cricket are a well-established part of the game. The cricket decision was based on evidence from Dr. Peter Harcourt, the chair of the ICC's medical advisory committee, of "the elevated risk of the transmission of the virus through saliva."It found at the same time that it is "highly unlikely that the virus can be transmitted through sweat and saw no need to prohibit the use of sweat to polish the ball."The decision of the committee, chaired by former India captain Anil Kumble and comprising high-profile ex-international stars such as England captain Andrew Strauss, Sri Lanka's Mahela Jayawardene, India's Rahul Dravid and South Africa's Shaun Pollock, seems a straight-forward hygiene precaution as cricket considers a path to resumption amid the coronavirus pandemic. But nothing to do with swinging a cricket ball is ever simple.Even the science around outswing, inswing and reverse swing bowling isn't generally agreed or understood, nor are the conditions that favor swing bowling or the means that allow a bowler to cause the ball to deviate in the air as it travels towards the batsmen. Inducing swing is one of cricket's most desired skills but also a minefield threaded by a narrow path which divides legality from illegality.Spit-polishing by the bowler or the fielding team has been for decades the accepted method of shining one side of the ball to create the aerodynamic asymmetry which, in conjunction with the position and angle of the seam and the grip and delivery action of the bowler, causes the ball to swing.Licking the fingers, applying the saliva to the ball and rubbing it vigorously on the trousers to improve the shine has become an ingrained, almost instinctive action by players between deliveries — one that will be hard to resist or unlearn. Whether sweat can be as effectively employed as saliva is uncertain but it is likely every swing bowler in the world will be working to find out as the ban on spit-polishing passes through the ICC machinery. The recommendation of the cricket committee moves now to the chief executives committee where likely it will be quickly endorsed. The use of saliva was always fraught because by chewing gum, sucking boiled candy or some other confectionery it was possible to apply to the ball some combination of saliva and another agent that enhanced the shine. Ball tampering — the use of illegal methods or substances to change the condition of the ball — has been one of cricket's most chronic or intractable problems. The former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis was twice sanctioned for ball tampering: first for rubbing the ball on the abrasive zip of his trousers and later for applying to the ball saliva mixed with a mint or other candy.Ex-Australia captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner were banned for 12 months and batsman Cameron Bancroft for nine months by Cricket Australia for their involvement in an attempt to use sandpaper to alter the condition of the ball in a test in South Africa in 2018.For that reason the cricket committee cautiously considered whether, in the absence of saliva, the use of an artificial substance such as wax to shine the ball should be temporarily approved. The committee found the question too fraught: at present the use of any artificial substance constitutes ball tampering and members felt any relaxation or variation of the rule might be problematic. However, amid fears that an inability to swing the ball might tip the balance of cric...

Cricket and fantasy cricket league are always promoted as gentlemen game; however, it has not always been mild if we retrospect its long history. We have seen numerous examples where cricketers crossed their limitations getting involved in the dispute and fight off and on the field. Short-tempered, attacking and not the ones to take digs in the proper spirit, they split up the men from the gentlemen. In this post, we are not likely to discuss fantasy cricket players who were aggressive but stayed perfectly within the spirit of the game. Additionally, we are not going to speak about players who got involved with only one notorious incident. This is an imaginary list of 3 fantasy games players and has some of the finest names in the cricket history, who repeatedly had to deal with their outburst related issues during their career. Gautam Gambhir The Delhi-born opening batsman is consistently regarded as a player who wears his heart on his sleeves. Gambhir was linked to multiple controversies in his illustrious cricket career. Gambhir had a heated feud with his Delhi coach, Bhaskar Pillai, at the Vijay Hazare Trophy in Bhubaneswar in 2017. He was presented with a four-match suspension from first-class cricket for his impolite action. He was also involved in a notorious conflict with Virat Kohli in an IPL game between KKR and RCB in 2016 that lifted too many eyebrows about his outburst issues. The former Indian cricketer was also linked to a giant fight with Shahid Afridi in 2007 at an ODI in Kanpur. David Warner David Warner, who is at present serving a ban for his link in ball-tampering issue, has become involved with more than eight on and off-field issues in his cricket career. Warner’s outburst got the better of him in Twitter when he blasted Tasmanian fast bowler, Brett Geeves, with a rant of tweets. He was suspended by Australia for apparently punching Joe Root at a club after a Champions Trophy match in 2013. He was even associated with on-field incidents with players such as Jonathan Trot, Thami Tsolekile, Quinton de Kock and Varun Aaron prior he got trapped in the notorious sand-paper scandal. Virat Kohli Virat Kohli, the well-known aggressive batsman and skipper of team India, is famous for controversies. His unpredictable behavior off and on the field gained a lot of criticisms worldwide. Though he has suppressed down his anger off-late, he is even now pocket dynamite that could explode any moment. Kohli exhibited his finger to the Syndey crowd after they kept on insulting him and the team at the time of India’s trip to Australia in 2012. After that, during India’s practice session at Australia in 2015, the Indian captain needlessly shouted with violent words at a reporter for writing about his bond with Anushka Sharma. He also got involved with Gautam Gambir on an unpleasant spat at the IPL game in 2016. His problems with Anil Kumble led to the Indian legend resigning from the post of Indian cricket team coach. Thanks for reading! Play fantasy sports and enjoy!

Samar Khan and Rahul Puri are back with their weekly round-up of sports. They both have great respect for Anil Kumble but Samar feels that unlike football, cricket is a captain's baby. On the other hand, Rahul says that it is not Virat Kohli's job to keep coming up with choices for a team coach. It is BCCI's job to select a coach and every person has his job roles. On the John McEnroe vs. Serena Williams row, Samar Khan says that it is futile to argue on the fact that women's tennis can bring the same revenue as men's tennis while Rahul feels that this is the case with every sport, not just tennis. In the world of football, Samar feels the main players do not take the Confederation Cup seriously. All this and more on this week's Just Sports.
