The Bloodline was the biggest angle in WWE and beyond. The saga had the Wrasslin' world on edge and was a great example of long term booking. And it got us thinking about some of the great all time WWF/E angles. The Megapowers, Austin/McMahon, Bruno/Zbyszko a.o. We do a deep dive into these and other memorable highlights. We also go over the latest Wrestling United card, the TNA/NXT deal and... The post Wrestling Night in Canada 079: We Don't Mean Kurt appeared first on Shining Wizards Network.
On the Raw Post-show from five years ago (1-23-2018), PWTorch editor Wade Keller was joined by Jonny Fairplay to discuss the 25th Anniversary Edition of Monday Night Raw including their initial reaction to the show. Then on-site correspondents from Manhattan Center and Barclays detail what happened off-air in detail. And finally, they read and respond to email rants and questions. Then, in the previously VIP-exclusive Aftershow, they read Mailbag questions pertaining to Raw 25 including several rants about the show. They also break down what they liked about Steve Austin and Vince McMahon's segment, did this show work getting people excited about the Rumble, and much more.
The 1999 Royal Rumble has it all: peak Austin/McMahon feud, Sable vs. Luna Strap Match, Rock vs. Mankind I Quit, and plenty of DX. Rachel royally stumbled upon it late at night and was soon royally riveted by peak Attitude Era work from some of wrestling's greats. Matt “claims” he watched it live and comes to a powerful realization about how watching matches from the past can be so transcendent. We go way back to the past discovering Andre the Giant's wrestling roots in Burlington, VT, check in on Total Divas and Pretty Deadly merch, and briefly dive into “Titanic Fever”. This week I visited the World's Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden for Monday Night Raw for the first time since September 22nd 1997. The last time I was at MSG for Raw, Triple H fought Cactus Jack in a Falls Count Anywhere match. Fast forward July 2022, Hunter is the EVP, Talent Relations as well as Head of Creative. Though Vince announced his retirement from the company this past Friday, 25 years ago I got to witness the beginning of the Austin/McMahon feud with a single Stone Cold stunner. So join me as I review my up close experience of Raw this week, including the 20 year anniversary of Rey Mysterio and of course a trip down memory lane from Raw is War 1997.
July 25th / 26th, 1999: The Steve Austin vs. Vince McMahon feud comes to a close at "Fully Loaded 1999," so we had to bring in Sal from The Rundown to help break down this historic pay-per-view, plus the following night's episode of "Raw!" "Fully Loaded 1999" Card: WWF Champion "Stone Cold" Steve Austin vs. The Undertaker in a First Blood / End of an Era Match The Rock vs. Triple-H in a #1 Contender Strap Match "The Road Dogg" & X-Pac vs. Billy Gunn & Chyna for the merchandising rights to D-Generation-X The Big Show vs. Kane w/special guest referee Hardcore Holly Ken Shamrock vs. Steve Blackman in an Iron Circle Match WWF Tag Team Champions The Hardy Boyz vs. The Acolytes in an Acolytes Rules Match WWF Intercontinental Champion Edge vs. Jeff Jarrett WWF European Champion Mideon vs. D'Lo Brown WWF Hardcore Champion Al Snow vs. The Big Boss Man July 26th, 1999 "Monday Night Raw": Vince McMahon is banned from WWF television forever, but before he can leave the airwaves "Stone Cold" Steve Austin gets a chance to say goodbye. Triple-H is the new #1 contender for "Stone Cold's" WWF Title, and he squares off with Ken Shamrock..... who got hit by a car earlier in the night! In your main event, The Rock faces Billy Gunn & Chyna in a 2-on-1 Handicap Match. The Undertaker is seeking revenge on X-Pac & Kane, and he may have found a partner-in-crime to help him out. Jeff Jarrett celebrates his Intercontinental Title victory by interviewing a special guest: the star of "Mystery Men," Ben Stiller! New Tag Team Champions The Acolytes put their titles on the line against Edge & Christian while Hardcore Holly watches on from ringside. Val Venis & The Godfather face Droz & Prince Albert, who have a familiar-looking "fan" in the crowd backing them up. WWF Women's Champion Ivory issues another open challenge, but she gets more than she bargained for when a familiar face interrupts the festivities. Plus, Kane speaks(!), Al Snow befriends a chihuahua, and we get an excerpt from Jim Ross's book "Under the Black Hat" where he discusses tonight's episode of "Raw!" The WWF is on fire by April '98. In this episode we cover the "RAW after WrestleMania" where Sean Waltman returned to the company to join DX, the New Age Outlaws became made men, Vince tried to "tame" his new champion, and everything else on the way to the Pay Per View after WrestleMania 14, Unforgiven 1998. Why was Dude Love the right opponent for Austin's first title defense? When did the company know that Austin-McMahon had "it" together? What did Waltman change that resulted in a better contract? What was the original name considered for him upon his return? How much of his "shoot" promo was scripted? How in the world did FIRE become such a critical part of the Undertaker-Kane feud? Who first pitched the Inferno Match? When did they first put the match together? What precautions were taken? You'll also hear more "tinkle, tinkle" silliness, who Bruce saw more potential in, some discussion on Mark Yeaton, the potential plan for Ric Flair on this Pay Per View, why the company didn't run Greensboro more often, what McMahon thought about the Rock N Roll Express, how the hell Sawyer Brown was on this show, how over Sable was without really doing anything, when the experiment for LOD 2000 was really over, Hunter beating Owen for the 713th time in a row, why Hunter wasn't the opponent for Steve instead of Dude Love, details on McMahon's first chair shot, and of course "Cornette" and "Pat" discussing the inferno match. We think 1998 is so easy to talk about and these two hours are going to fly by as we discuss UNFORGIVEN 1998! Bruce has had enough and he blows a gasket to start the show this week. Around 18 minutes in, it's all about the first time Vince McMahon decided to do the very first "brand split" with the First Draft on March 25, 2002! Who had the idea first? What was the original plan? Who in the office was against a split? Was Flair always supposed to be the first "General Manager" in company history? Was the idea to create "dream matches" for super shows? Was the brand split based on revenues being down or strictly creative? Bruce details exactly how Vince presents an idea and the way the writers worked together in that era. Who was happiest Hogan was back in the locker room? Who did Hall & Nash not want in the nWo? Who was allegedly "blown off" by a friend at WrestleMania? How did Vince feel when people joked about his failure with the XFL on TV? Who first used the word "brand" and why did the company start using it on TV? Who won the battle: WWF or DirecTV? Was there ever a plan to do more than 16 PPVs a year? Bruce discusses Mark Henry in the Hall of Fame, more details than ever before about the WWF name change, what agreement Vince didn't honor, what other names were considered, who wanted the word "wrestling" out of the name, rumors about Rey and Eddie's low ball contract offers, why the lightweight title never caught on, whether or not Stephanie wanted to be a TV star, which Superstars got to tryout for color commentary before Taz was selected, what Vince said at the meeting with the boys prior to the draft, how and where those meetings are held, why Penn State was the host, why RAW got a new look that night, when the talent found out, which talent did know ahead of time, who had special requests, whether or not traveling partners were considered, the silliness of Steve Austin not being in the draft, how Jericho found out, why Hunter wasn't eligible, why the nWo could be drafted as a group but the Dudleyz were split, who saw the Dudleyz as singles stars, how the Austin-McMahon relationship was at this point, plus details on the first Undisputed World Title belt! The last event before WrestleMania; Fastlane 2018 is this Sunday how will the #WWE fare as they gear #SDLive up for the biggest event of the year? Monday Night #Raw gave us a taster of what we expect to see at Mania from Ronda Rousey and Stephanie McMahon, with the plan for the Rowdy One to elevate Steph's status - will this be anything like Vince facing Stone Cold in the Attitude Era? Probably not. SmackDown Live geared up for their final single-branded pay-per-view by adding John Cena to the WWE Championship match making it a six-pack challenge. Neither Rich or Tom are overly looking forward to the show but would love to be surprised by a good show! Rich's match of the week to watch on the network varies with several recommendations, Tom gives a summary of the news of the week and what exactly is a Kennel of Hell match? All that and much more discussed on Proper Sport's weekly wrestling podcast - PS does WWE.
March 9th, 1998: Steve Austin is still irate about Mike Tyson joining DX so he calls out Vince McMahon, and "Stone Cold" is willing to hold the show hostage until the boss shows up. Later, Tyson himself gives a very brief, pre-taped interview to Jim Ross in which he basically says nothing important. Owen Hart defends his European Title against overweight cowboy Barry Windham while Triple-H and Chyna lurk at ringside. Kane and Paul Bearer claim that they are not afraid of The Undertaker, but The Dead Man puts that theory to the test by literally haunting the arena (yes, you read that correctly). The Rock & Faarooq take on Ken Shamrock & Steve Blackman (a.k.a. The Most Awesome Tag Team In History) as The Nation of Domination's internal turmoil continues. The Artist Formerly Known As Goldust goes one-on-one with Marc Mero in a match where Sable and Luna are needlessly handcuffed to opposing ringposts. Cactus Jack & Chainsaw Charlie square off with The Quebecers while The New Age Outlaws seek to make even more mischief. Aguila squares off with "Too Sexy" Brian Christopher, who provides us with an incredibly creepy soundbite. Enjoying the Podcast?
