Babba Kamma 55a-55b (Daf Yomi) by Rabbi Avi Zakutinsky
She helped launch Uber in her native Sweden, then served as Away's Director of Brand Marketing before opening her own marketing agency. There, she learned the limits of being a consultant (good ideas without good execution are meaningless), and decided to focus her efforts on something she could lead from beginning to end. Babba shares how her journey led her to found Ceremonia, a clean hair care line rooted in Latinx heritage, and the pitch that earned her a $10 million Series A. LTL is coming to a city near you! Babba C Rivera is the founder and CEO of Ceremonia, a line of clean haircare products rooted in Latinx heritage. In 2020, she launched the brand with a single product—a scalp oil inspired by personal childhood rituals and her father's early career as a hairdresser in Chile. In the three years since, Ceremonia has grown its product line, opened a brick-and-mortar store in New York, and launched in over 500 Sephora locations, becoming the first Latinx-founded haircare brand sold at the retailer. Rivera also recently raised $10 million in a Series A, making her one of only 58 Latinas to raise over $1 million in VC funding. But before Rivera was building a haircare empire, she was leading marketing teams at companies like Uber and Away, and even operated her own brand marketing company called ByBabba.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

On this episode of Hot Takes, we're joined by Babba Rivera, Founder and CEO of Ceremonia, a clean hair care brand rooted in Latinx heritage. From growing up in a Chilean household in Sweden to moving to New York City for work, Babba's relationship with the beauty industry has always been one of wanting more and better. Having always felt under-represented as a Latina woman in magazines, the beauty aisles, or in the realm of business executives, Babba knew she had the opportunity to reclaim power in her heritage for herself and future generations. And reclaim she did! Now uprooting beauty norms and entrepreneurial milestones - she's in a small group of women who have raised over $1mm in VC funding, raising 10MM to date for Ceremonia - her Hot Take is a reminder of just how influential the beauty industry can be. Babba Rivera, Founder & CEO of Ceremonia, is a hustler who tells it like it is. Being born in Chile and growing up in Sweden, Babba often felt like an outsider, but today, she credits that upbringing with giving her the tools she needed to become successful. Aspiring entrepreneurs and Small Biz Owners, take notes on this one! In this episode, we cover Babba's incredible brand marketing career journey at Uber, which led to a role with another well-known DTC brand. A few months in, she decided to quit this steady job despite being on a work visa and without having much savings, in order to launch her own marketing agency. When the pandemic created challenges for many of her agency's clients, she got the push she needed to launch an innovative, clean hair care brand rooted in Latina heritage, and to be the founder that other Latina girls & women could look up to. In addition to her career journey, you'll hear about Babba's thoughts on “having it all, but not having it all at once,” the shame and double standards she faced as a new mama while her business was still early stage, and how her white husband opened her eyes to perspectives she never even thought of as a minority woman. We'll also hear from LIVELY ambassador DeAna Fierce, who teaches women how to build sustainable confidence in their lives so they can show up more confident & authentic on and offline. Tune in to #1 Podcast for Beginner Investors, Stock Dirty to Me, as we discuss Facebook fall from grace, Babba looking more attractive and The Fed Raising Rates in March and so much more all recorded live February 9th, 2022 in their Private Facebook Group.
We've been very interested in the idea of angel investing over the past 2-3 years and have honestly gotten stumped by how little we know. It seems as though the people doing it have so much more experience and know so much more than us that it's been intimidating us into inaction. Babba's advice takes a very different approach- she advises people not to figure everything out on their own. She shares some great communities and networks that help people get introduced to angel investing as well as her own perspectives on what makes a good deal. This was an awesome episode to hear from both sides: the investor and the founder on the topic of raising capital.
There are so many dynamics at play when you're a business owner in the public eye. Add on being a new mom to that and you've got a recipe for people throwing their opinions at you. Babba takes us through her journey, being honest as she navigated pregnancy & motherhood for the first time and the response she received from her community. She has such a refreshing perspective on ‘having options' and she's helping us understand that there's no ‘right way' to do things. This is a fantastic episode for anyone thinking about how they might handle parenthood and their career.
Babba Rivera has done it all. She's built entire markets in the tech industry at Uber, she's built the brand collaborations that took Away to what it is today and she's also seen success through her entrepreneurial ventures, ByBabba & Ceremonia. If that wasn't enough, Babba is also an Angel Investor and a new mom. We were so thrilled to have her on the podcast to talk about her journey and we're excited to dig deeper into balancing parenthood and business in the next episode and more on angel investing as we close out this series. Press play to hear Babba tell us all about it!
