Episode 72. Ancret Shipton - Far South Coast NSW

More Than Milk

Ancret Shipton farms in the Bega Valley, not far from where she grew up, but she never envisioned herself as a farmer. That was until she met Michael, who just wanted to be in dairy. Ancret however considered herself the farmers wife; the sounding board, the support and backstop for Michael's farming dreams. That was until he suddenly passed away after receiving a cancer diagnosis a short 9 weeks earlier that would change their lives forever.  In this incredibly emotive chat, Ancret shares how they progressed from workers, to sharefarmers and into farm ownership, the grief she has experienced since Michael's death, the 2 pages of information and 3 pieces of advice he left her with, how she's managed the farm for the last 4 years with unwavering support from her farming advisors and local community and how she's dealing with the secondary grief of farming without Michael. We recorded this chat late last year, and since then I've often reflected on the resilience Ancret has shown and the many lessons we can all take away from this heartbreaking story, so let's get into it.  In the spirit of reconciliation we would like to acknowlegde the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.    PROUDLY SUPPORTED BY CREAM OF THE CROP  Cream of the Crop is a two day conference, providing an opportunity for women in the dairy industry to come together to learn, connect and grow. Recognising the contribution, regardless of their role, they make to the industry and their wider community. Kate Flood (aka Compostable Kate) is a sustainability educator, compost queen and author of The Compost Coach (2023). She is prolific on Instagram, sharing all things Bokashi, worm farms and hot compost. She lives, gardens and composts in the Bega Valley, in southern New South Wales on the Yuin-Monaro Nations. We chat about what Kate and Beyonce have in common, her amazing jumper collection and, of course, all things compost including sheet composting, what kind of composting she'd do on a desert island, and a whole lot more.  We also talk about how composting is fabulous for the garden, and vital part of climate activism.  Find her on Instagram here But before we get there...we're chatting about possums, snails and wheelbarrows. We're drinking the Compostable Kate Cocktail (a fresh little number we whipped up with sparkling rose, ginger syrup, strawberries and borage). We're recommending The Overstory by Richard Powers Kate recommends: the Share Waste app - a way to connect people who wish to recycle their food scraps and other organics with their neighbours who are already composting, worm-farming or keeping farm animals.

The trend we call the Exodus to Affordable Lifestyle is among the most powerful forces impacting real estate markets across Australia. It's a trend that been around for at least the past 10 years, with more and more residents of the biggest cities relocating to smaller cities or regional areas in search of a different and more affordable lifestyle, empowered by technology which allows many people to work remotely. It was NOT created by the Covid lockdowns. It was under way long before Covid appeared in 2020 and it continues to have considerable momentum now that we are well beyond the pandemic restrictions. But media continues to perpetuate the fiction that this was a Covid thing – and to express surprise that, now that we no longer have lockdowns and border restrictions, people are not all moving back to the big cities. The latest quarterly edition of the Regional Movers Index confirms that this trend is as strong as ever – and it has generated more shock/horror/amazement from journalists who think it was all about the Covid lockdowns. One article in major media expressed surprise that “Australia is not going back to the pre-pandemic way of life”. And there's a very good reason for that: this trend has very little to do with the pandemic. The Regional Movers Index – which is a collaboration between the Regional Australia Institute (RAI) and the Commonwealth Bank - has once again reported that there are far more people relocating to regional areas than making a move in the opposite direction to major cities, with a 27 per cent difference in the June 2024 Quarter. What the latest figures confirm, according to RAI chief executive Liz Ritchie, is that “the population movement we're seeing is a sustained trend”. Ritchie says: “Regional Australia has become the nation's new frontier.” The latest data highlighted a number of specific hotspots that are reaping the benefits of Australia's romance with the regions. Lake Macquarie, which sits beside Newcastle in NSW, has emerged as one of Australia's most popular destinations for movers, securing an almost 5 per cent share of net internal migration over the past year. Neighbouring local government areas on the NSW south coast such as the Bega Valley and Eurobodalla both experienced strong annual and quarterly surges in movement, according to the report. Large centres within a few hours' drive of capitals remain popular with many movers, however the regions that experienced the biggest population changes over the past 12 months were generally further afield, including Townsville (Qld), Mid-West Regional (NSW), Strathbogie (Vic), Murray Bridge (SA), Greater Geraldton (WA) and George Town (Tas). Approximately three-quarters of the city dwellers who made the move to the regions in the past three months found new homes in either regional NSW or Victoria, confirming that Sydney continues to shed the highest number of residents, followed by Melbourne. But that's not to say that Queensland's appeal has waned entirely, with regional Queensland's share of net city outflows sitting at 19 per cent, even though it was as high as 41 per cent this time last year. Indeed, the Sunshine Coast has retained its title as the nation's most popular destination for relocators, accounting for a 14 per cent share of net internal migration. The Gold Coast has slipped down in the rankings, however, with the city experiencing a net outflow of people to other regional areas. Western Australia also proved attractive for relocators, with Albany, Bunbury, Busselton, Capel and Northam all seeing an inflow of new residents. The overall picture is that the trend of people moving from Sydney and Melbourne to regional areas continues strongly, with large numbers of big city dwellers still seeking a different and more affordable lifestyle.

Coming from the Bega Valley, she is currently sharing her time between one of the smallest farms and one of the largest in the region, working both on her family farm milking 150 and working at Kimba's down the road milking 1200. And whilst there isn't enough room to return to the home farm right now, she's using this time to build her skills and knowledge and get ready so when the time comes to return home she can grab it with both hands! She is also the YDN leader for the bega region, where she is super passionate about making sure dairy is thriving for many years to come - and as you may have seen if you're following along on my socials, I attended the inaugural YDN conference which Sammie and the other YDN leaders across NSW held, which was a brilliant event.  In the spirit of reconciliation we would like to acknowlegde the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. The regional areas of NSW abound with growth markets, as big city residents continue to target affordable lifestyle areas. Most locations are delivering big price rises. There are 181 suburbs and towns throughout Regional NSW with rising sales momentum, which equates to 61% of locations. The major population centres – Newcastle/Lake Macquarie, the Central Coast, and Wollongong/Shoalhaven – are all pumping strongly, as are other key regional centres like Tamworth, Wagga Wagga, Orange and Dubbo. Coastal municipalities in the south, like Eurobodalla and Bega Valley, are being targeted by lifestyle buyers. And there are smaller regional centres with upwardly-mobile markets, including Armidale, Bathurst, Broken Hill, Cowra, Glen Innes, Goulburn, Griffith, Gunnedah, Inverell, Kempsey, Leeton, Moree and Parkes. Markets throughout Regional NSW are delivering exceptional price growth, from major regional centres like Newcastle and Wollongong to small rural towns like Glen Innes and Cootamundra. Virtually every town or suburb through Regional NSW (97%) has recorded growth in their median house prices in the past 12 months and in the most recent quarter. Two-thirds have had annual growth above 10%. Only seven of the locations analysed in this report have failed to record growth in the past year. There is spectacular growth right across NSW, but locations close to Sydney stand out. The Central Coast, the Blue Mountains, the Southern Highlands, Wollongong and the Shoalhaven all have stand-out examples. So, against this background, we have just published our new edition of the Top 5 Regional NSW Hotspots report. It outlines five key regional centres in the state which offer affordability and lifestyle – and have great prospects for capital growth in the short-term but more importantly in the long-term as well. Energy Ministers Dan Van Holst Pelekaan S.A -   Bill Johnson W.A-   and Shane Rattenbury -A.C.T Climate Scientist Dr Joelle Gergis in her article "Witnessing the Unthinkable" says "We have arrived at a point in human history that I think of as the great unravelling". She is a lead author  with the U.N. and she talks about the emotional toll on scientists who seem to be unheard. When the Great Barrier Reef scientist Terry Hughs dived down to see the coral he felt like an Art Lover.."wandering through the Louvre as it burns to the ground". Dr Gergis asks. "Is this the end of fossil fuels or the end of life as we know it?" https://www.themonthly.com.au/issue/2020/july/1593525600/jo-lle-gergis/witnessing-unthinkable#mtr To dramatise this fork in the road, we bring you the experience of Kangaroo Island residents including beekeepers who saw the world's oldest bee sanctuary decimated by wildfire.  By contrast the energy minister of S.A speaks franakly about having to curtail the energy generated by solar roof owners. Apparently the grid cananot cope and he wants us to hasten slowly to the great consternation of Smart Energy Council industry members who see job losses ahead in this difficult time. Meanwhile in WA they are promoting battery manufacturing rather than just exporting the lithium. They have a separate grid from the eastern states and are planning to export hydrogen in great quantities. Another fork in the road. There is demand from Japan and S.Korea for Blue Hydrogen made from gas, but with emissions in mind we need to drive down the cost of renewable hydrogen so WA can export the 30 gigawatts it intends to, which is far more than the other states. There were 1000+ industry and climate action witnesses to this frank discussion of how each state is creating policies in the absence of a National Plan for Energy Transition. The chat box went wild with reminders that there is no budget left for fossil fuels and Blue Hydrogen is just "Fossil Fuel Industry Spin". It would be hard for the ministers to miss that they cannot have an energy discussion divorced from the need to decarbonise. Shane Rattenbury, ACT Energy Minister feared that the Federal Government would embed more gas in our energy system. This is another fork in the road as COVID recovery money flows to new projects. He said if we get more gas "They will fight like hell to protect their investments and they will influence government as other vested interests have done before" BREAKING NEWS came as I completed this prerecorded show. THE PREMATURE DEATH OF COAL......IEEFA's Tim Buckley says "It's happening sooner than we expected": Examples:Adani Australia's parent company has confirmed it's moving away from thermal coal mining. Refugee Week is being marked around the region, the theme is a clever play on words borrowed from our national anthem - “With courage let us all combine.” The aim of the week is to celebrate the contribution refugees make to Australian society and to ultimately build a better understanding between different communities and bring about successful integration. A range of cultural, social and advocacy events are planned across the Eurobodalla, Bega Valley and Snowy Monaro in the coming days. At Cooma on Thursday (June 22) there is a film screening, “Constance on the Edge” between 5:30 and 7:30 at the Cooma Multicultural Centre on Mittagang Rd. ‘Constance on the Edge’ follows charismatic Constance, a mother of six, as she confronts her painful past in war torn Sudan, and risks everything in Australia so her family can thrive. Filmed over 10 years in Wagga Wagga, the documentary is an unflinchingly honest portrayal of one refugee family’s resettlement story in regional Australia. The Bega Valley branch of Rural Australians for Refugees has a packed program of movie screenings, dinners and author talks and on Friday, June 23 at 10 am in Littleton Gardens Bega, a rally to raise awareness of Refugee Welcome Zones. And in the Eurobodalla, locals are invited to join in a celebration in Moruya on Saturday morning (June 24) as the Welcome Scroll visits on its national journey. The Welcome Scroll is 5 metres long, features hand turned red gum handles and the signatures of representatives from over 140 Refugee Welcome Zones around the country - including the signature of Eurobodalla Mayor Liz Innes. Head to Russ Martin Park between 10 and 12 this Saturday, they’ll be food and live music and you can check out the Moruya Markets at the same time. South East NSW busy as always! To this week’s podcast - William Maley is Professor of Diplomacy at the Australian National University, and Vice President of the Refugee Council of Australia, he has just been in the region as a guest of the Social Justice Advocates of the Sapphire Coast. Bill’s book “What is a Refugee?” is a guide to the complex issues that surface whenever refugees are discussed, while also telling the stories of families and individuals who have sought refuge. Bill came to Merimbula keen to motivate and inform advocacy around the issue, hoping for a more human approach to refugees from the Australian Government and sections of Australian society. He spoke for almost an hour, to about 200 people, I’ve boiled it down to about 17 minutes, I’ve cleaned the audio up as best I can, but there is a little bit of background noise, which I hope doesn’t get in your way. Thanks for tuning into About Regional, your feedback, story ideas and advertising enquiries are welcome, just flick me an email – hello@aboutregional.com.au Thanks to my partners in this week’s podcast - Light to Light Camps – pristine beaches, great food, hot showers and comfy beds. Welcome to About Regional - new place for the stories of South East NSW. This week, one man takes on the garbage building in our oceans… Every high school student in the Bega Valley will soon have a reusable drink bottle, cutting the need for one use, light weight, disposable plastic water bottles. Over the last couple of months’ students at Eden Marine High School, and Lumen Christi Catholic College at Pambula have received a stainless steel drink bottle to refill at school taps and bubblers. Kids at Bega High School got there’s today (May 16), and Sapphire Coast Anglican Collage down the road will soon have theirs. It’s the initiative of Bega Valley philanthropist Peter Hannan. As someone who loves the ocean Peter says he felt compelled to act after hearing of the impact plastics are having on the world. Following last year’s Marine Science Forum, hosted by the Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, Peter made a pledge to buy 2500 reusable bottles and distribute them to year 7 to 12 students across the Shire. Peter comes from a family of community action, his late mother Shirley, established a trust before she died to fund a national portrait prize that is held every two years, which has since grown to incorporate a youth prize in the alternate year. More at www.lighttolightcamps.com.au Thanks to Jen, Arthur and Jake for your support. Today an interview that was a real surprise to me. I stuck a microphone in front of Andrew Weglarz at the NSW Corrective Services Museum at Cooma recently – with no real plan for the conversation. Andrew’s insight and intellect took hold and I was just a passenger. Andrew’s passion masks the fact that he is only new to the job and new to Australia. Andrew and the Museum hosted the launch of MoSE – The Museum of the South East, an online collection of significant artefacts from museums of the Bega Valley, Eurobodalla and Snowy Monaro. Episode one was recorded on the banks of Candelo Creek, south west of Bega but takes in the full geography of South East NSW. First, the tragic story of 10-year-old Noa Jessop.
