Writer and tour guide Simon Tancred on the little-known ANZAC story of how a group of POWs made a daring escape on foot to neutral Switzerland.Simon Tancred fell in love with Italy as a young man, and set up a job for himself leading hikes and tours across the country, and into the Alps. So Simon was familiar with the old trails and passes that crisscross the mountains, and which have been used for hundreds of years by shepherds, traders and travellers. But one day, someone approached him with the unknown story of how a group of Australian prisoners of war from the Second World War escaped from Italy to freedom in neutral Switzerland.Four mates from Moree evaded the enemy by using these ancient, winding tracks. They didn't speak Italian, they battled wintry conditions, and never knew if the civilians they encountered along the way would help them or turn them over to the occupying German forces.Simon was so intrigued by this story, he bought some old maps and set out to follow their journey to freedom, by tracing their steps across the Alps. This episode of Conversations explores fascism, politics, war, civil war, prisoners of war, unknown stories of WWII, the Anzacs, Anzac Day 2025, Italy, Italian Alps, modern history, books, writing, walking tours in Italy, travel, Mountaineering, Partisans, Nazis, Nazi Germany, neutral Switzerland, World War Two history, religion, Madonna, Mary, Italian Catholicism, where to hike in Italy.Trails to Freedom is published by Hardie Grant.

Death I didn't attend the funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying I approved of it. - Mark Twain Death The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time. - Mark Twain   DEATH   Lisa Rotgrak is the author of a book called Death Warmed Over, a combination cookbook and sociological study of funeral meals and rituals. She starts it with the story of a man dying at home in bed. He could smell the aroma of chocolate chip cookies--his favorite--baking downstairs. He wanted one more cookie before he died.   He dragged his body out of bed, rolled down the stairs, crawled into the kitchen, and reached out a trembling arm to grasp one final cookie, when he felt the sting of a spatula smack his hand. "Put that back," his wife said. "They're for the funeral."   The rich fool had many cookies, and he thought they were all for him. "This is what I'll do," says the rich fool. "I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods."   One more barn. One more crop. One more cookie. Then one night out comes the spatula. "Whack." "They don't belong to you. They're for the funeral."   Ask not for whom the spatula whacks. It whacks for thee.   --as reported in John Ortberg's new book, When the Game Is Over It All Goes Back in the Box (Zondervan, 2007):     “If it weren't for death, life would be unbearable.” –Malcolm Muggeridge. We have eternal life to look forward to; if we didn't, life would be meaningless     No one escapes death… A driver, who crashed into the side of a 3000-ton wheat train and was dragged in his car more than a kilometer before being slammed into a pylon at the edge of a cliff, fell to his death as he walked for help.  The Queensland, Australia man, 63, and his female companion, 64, were driving along the Newell Highway near Moree, in Northwestern New South Wales, on Wednesday night, police said.  Their car crashed into the side of a fully laden, 600-meter long train at a level crossing. (I guess that would be harder to miss than the side of a barn!) The vehicle became wedged between the second last and last carriages and was dragged sideways beside the track as the train continued towards Moree, a police spokeswoman said.  After being carried more than a kilometer and a half they approached an unfenced bridge with a 10-meter drop, the spokeswoman said. Moments before they reached the precipice, the car was struck by a pylon, dislodged from the train and spun several times. When it came to rest, the pair managed to free themselves from the wreck (I wonder if it was a Volvo?) with minor bruising and the man set off along the railway line for help. But he slipped on the bridge and fell to his death, the spokeswoman said.  The woman was eventually able to raise the alarm and was recovering in Moree hospital with chest injuries.   Are you ready to die… I am, I can't wait…  Jim Elliot (slain missionary) "When the time comes to die, make sure that all you have to do is die!"

This special episode explores the impact of avian influenza on the egg industry in Australia. Melinda Hashimoto, CEO of Egg Farmers of Australia, provides insights into the virus, its transmission, and the measures taken to control its spread. The discussion covers the process of detecting and responding to avian influenza outbreaks on farms, the impact on farmers and the supply chain, and the role of biosecurity in preventing the spread of the virus. It also highlights the importance of consumer support and awareness in maintaining the stability of the egg industry.TakeawaysAvian influenza is a highly contagious viral disease that affects birds and is spread through wild birds. The egg industry in Australia produces about 18.3 million eggs per day, with the majority coming from Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria. In the event of an avian influenza outbreak, affected farms are quarantined, and the birds are destroyed to prevent the spread of the virus.Farmers can receive compensation for the loss of birds and the impact on their business, but the process of recovery can take several months.Consumers can support the egg industry by continuing to purchase and consume eggs, while also practicing good biosecurity measures if they own backyard hens. Some supply chain impacts have been felt and supermarkets and restaurant chains have taken measures to manage their supply to customers. This is a long overdue chat with one of the most respected riders in the Australian amateur ranks. When not competing at faraway picnic meetings, Ricky Blewitt can be found riding trackwork at Narromine before starting his full time job as the Narromine Turf Club's track manager. The busy horseman speaks highly of the first class country racecourse.  Ricky confirms that he rides eight or more horses in trackwork most mornings for his partner Kylie Kennedy. He says Kylie competes mainly at professional meetings but occasionally takes a horse to the picnics. The top horseman speaks highly of Kylie's father, former jockey and successful trainer Wayne Collison. Ricky says he has no problem with the 62 kg minimum weight at the picnic meetings. The jockey declares his love for the business and his willingness to drive long distances to race meetings. He talks of early days in Queanbeyan and makes the surprise admission that he had a fear of horses in childhood days. Ricky recalls his friendship with a local apprentice who went on to Gr 1 success as a jockey. He looks back on a deal he made with his parents regarding schooling, and his first job with local trainer Amanda Langlar. Rick looks back on his transfer to respected trainer Arch Turner and the nasty trackwork fall that dimmed his enthusiasm for a while. He talks of his debut as an amateur rider and the thrill of a win at just his second ride. Ricky says he has no idea of the number of premierships he's won largely because of inadequate records. He talks of his wonderful run in Picnic Cups all over the state. He looks back on the first of his three Bong Bong Cup successes. He got a huge thrill to win his second Bong Bong Cup in the colours made famous by champions like Saintly and So You Think. Ricky's third win at Bong Bong gave him the biggest kick of all. He was chuffed to ride a horse called Frenzied for the Waterhouse/Bott combination. Both trainers were there on the day. The jockey says the Bong Bong Cup meeting is very different to days gone by. He talks of the famous Golden Triangle picnic circuit in the state's north west- three meetings in two weeks which all attract huge crowds. Rick pays tribute to Moree trainer Peter Sinclair who's given him great support over many years. He says the Sinclair trained Track Flash is almost certainly the best picnic galloper he's ridden. Ricky has no doubt the Picnic Cups are almost TAB standard races these days. He says the influence of Racing NSW has resulted in better maintained picnic race tracks. He reviews some of the many picnic tracks he's patronised over the year, with special mention of the popular Bedgerabong course. Ricky says he's been relatively lucky regarding injuries throughout his career but has unhappy memories of one three horse crash at Tomingley in 2019. He and Mick Gray sustained multiple injuries, while Michael Hackett had to call time on a successful career. He pays tribute to two great picnic jockeys who helped shape his career. Rick has had many memorable days of race riding. He recalls a couple of red letter days at Booroowa and Tottenham. I've had several requests to present a podcast with Ricky Blewitt. It was a delight to catch up with a true gentleman of the amateur riding ranks.
